Parents play a vital role in influencing their children's outdoor recreation participation. Families can enjoy nature and stay active in state parks, which provide abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation and education. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between parents' experiences with, and attitudes toward, outdoor recreation and children's participation in outdoor recreation at state parks. A total of 104 parents completed an online survey in spring 2020. In state park settings, parents generally valued their children's participation in non-consumptive outdoor recreation activities more than consumptive activities. A series of chi-square analyses further indicated, however, that parents who prefer engaging in consumptive recreation activities placed higher importance on their children's participation in the consumptive activities of fishing and hunting. Parents' outdoor recreation activity preferences did not reflect differences in their own levels of physical activity but did relate to variations in their children's physical activity levels.

The purpose of the study is to understand the challenges and opportunities of urban outdoor education centers in partnership and programming. The context for this study involves efforts by all-season outdoor education centers, Outdoor Campus (OC), in two urban areas in South Dakota (SD). Outdoor education scope and social-ecological framework were applied to guide this qualitative study. Semi-structured interview questions were used to interview eight outdoor educators in 2019, including four individuals from each service location composed of three males and five female educators. Qualitative content analysis was applied to identify common themes and essential quotations that emerged from the data analyzed through the interviews. Three main themes emerged: (1) gateway to our outdoor legacy (2) working together for outdoor education, including three sub-themes: formal partnership, programmatic partnership, and finding balance in partnership, (3) challenges as opportunities in outdoor education programs, including two sub-themes: common challenges and evolving process.

In this article we describe the Books 2 Basketball (B2B) program created by a school counselor for Black youth along with some preliminary outcomes examined after its implementation. This program was not evaluated for effectiveness but to determine if the program was feasible and to share feedback from some of the participants. The B2B program is facilitated after-school and geared toward exposing Black youth to college preparatory dialogue using the development of basketball and academic skills. The overarching goal of this program is to promote students' potential for academic success, which enhances post-secondary options, by teaching children basic basketball and basic arithmetic/mathematical skills (i.e., how to calculate fractions, percentages, decimals, and ratios). The feedback from the student participants provides implications for the use of sport and recreation-related programs to promote their learning, career development, and physical health. We conclude this article with implications for research, practice, and policy for educators unveiling the brilliance of Black/African American youth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Childhood is a key developmental period for important physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development. It can serve as a foundation for behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes that carry into adulthood. In terms of outdoor recreation, existing literature denotes many childhood benefits and finds that children who participate in outdoor activities are likely to continue participation into adulthood. This paper uses an ecological perspective to broaden the exploration of childhood factors that contribute to youth participation in outdoor recreation, including interpersonal, community, and societal factors. Of particular importance are parental and family factors, suggesting that outdoor recreation professionals focus on family programming to foster sustainable participation. Adopting an ecological perspective also emphasizes the importance of creating community partnerships, supportive environments, and inclusive programming for diverse children and adults. The State of Oklahoma, located in the heart of Tornado Alley, frequently experiences severe weather events such as tornadoes, hail, and damaging wind. Weather events such as these inflict injury and, in some cases, death on park visitors as well as damage park infrastructure, amenities, and other natural resources. Park and recreation professionals, especially those in severe weather-prone areas, must prepare for and respond to such events with the appropriate emergency operations and hazard mitigation procedures (National Park Service, 2006; Whitworth & May, 2006). Following the tourism disaster and crisis management frameworks (Faulkner, 2001; Ritchie, 2008), this study focuses on risk analysis and hazard mitigation strategies and implementations applicable to parks and recreation areas. Additionally, this study seeks to remedy the lack of longitudinal historical research by employing geographic information system (GIS)-based approaches to investigate the spatial interaction between severe weather events and state parks. Using geospatial data of tornado, hail, wind, and lightning events from 1950 to 2015, provided by NOAA's National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, we quantitatively evaluate the potential risk of severe weather on Oklahoma State Parks. GIS-based kernel density estimation was utilized to create interpolated raster surfaces representing accumulated risk (1950-2015) for each type of severe weather event (similar to Dixon et al., 2011). Results show that tornadoes had the most widespread impact on parks in central to north-central regions of Oklahoma. Conversely, the risk posed by hail is more prevalent in parks located in western Oklahoma while parks in northeastern Oklahoma are most affected by severe winds. Parks located in the southeastern corner of Oklahoma have higher chance of lightning strikes. By combining all types of severe weather as a composite dataset, a 'severe weather risk' score was assigned to each state park. Natural hazard mitigation strategies and recommendations include allocate operation and maintenance appropriation to severe weather-prone state parks, strengthen emergency response procedure and training programs, and raise natural hazard awareness through communication and education programs. Although this study emphasizes a state-level administration, these methods are transferable to other scales (i.e., national, local) depending on data availability. In the past decade, state government appropriation reductions have forced park agencies to seek other sources of revenue to support park operations. To overcome shrinking budgets, many public park agencies embrace privatesector business models and investigate customer satisfaction, service quality, and user fee structures. The purpose of this study was to obtain public input regarding service quality, general satisfaction, and experience use history of state park visitation. A total of 382 Oklahoma state park users completed an online survey and were sorted into Pro-Fee (n = 200, 52%) and No-Fee (n = 182, 48%) groups for one-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) tests. The researchers found a significant difference between the two groups on service quality, but not on overall satisfaction or behavioral intention (e.g., revisit, recommending the park). When comparing Pro-Fee and No-Fee groups, researchers found no statistically significant variance in visitors' demographics, such as gender, education level, and income, whereas the number of years that had passed since the visitors' first visit showed a significant difference between the groups. The findings of this study provide valuable insight for discussions related to entrance fees and service fees in state park systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Public parks and recreation services could be considered as an accessible and affordable choice for local residents as they are pursuing active and healthy lifestyles. The purpose of this study is to identify perceptions of benefits from parks and recreation services using Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA). Using convenience sampling through email invitations and social media, a total of 1,212 self-identified South Dakota residents were included in this study. Using paired t-tests to identify differences between importance and performance, the results indicated the public desire more physical and mental health related services from parks and recreation than they have received. The results can assist parks and recreation providers in prioritizing resource allocations and could aid in decisionmaking processes to maximize the benefits of health and quality of life. In order to document state parks' health benefits, the study examined the relationship between state park visitors' physical activity level and perceived health outcomes. Using a convenience sampling method, visitors to Oklahoma State Parks were invited to respond to an online survey (N = 412). The results showed: (1) positive psychological experience was the highest perceived health outcomes, and (2) the more active visitors were in the park, the more likely they were to experience the health benefits parks provide. State parks should be a venue for health promotion and attract visitors from the general public, particularly underserved and rural populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
