1. Developing a Launch Package for the PEGASUS Launcher

Abstract

Railguns are capable to far exceed the muzzle energies of current naval deck guns. Therefore one of the most promising scenario for the future application of railguns in naval warfare is the long range artillery. Hypervelocity projectiles being propelled to velocities above 2 km/s reach targets at distances of 200 km or more. At the French-German Research Institute the PEGASUS launcher is used for investigations with respect to this scenario. The 6 m long barrel has a square caliber of 40 mm. The power supply unit is able to deliver 10 MJ to the gun. Within this investigation, a complete launch package is being developed and experiments are performed that aim at showing that this package can be accelerated to velocities ranging from 2000 m/s to 2500 m/s. A launch package consists out of an armature, a sabot and the projectile. The armature ensures the electrical contact during launch and pushes the sabot with its payload through the barrel. The sabot guides and protects the payload during the acceleration. At the same time the accelerating forces generated at the armature needs to be transferred to the projectile. After the launch package has left the barrel, the sabot should open and release its payload, the projectile into free-flight. Abstract

In the real world application of railguns, the launch efficiency is one of the most important parameters. This efficiency directly relates to the capacity of the electrical energy storage that is needed for the launch. In this study, the rail/armature contact behavior for two different armature technologies was compared. To this end, experiments using aluminum c-shaped armature and copper brush armature type projectiles were performed under same initial conditions. The c-shaped armature type showed a superior behavior with respect to electrical contact to the rails and in acceleration. A 300 g projectile with a c-shaped armature reached a velocity of 3100 m/s and an overall launch efficiency including the power supply of 41%. Abstract

A DES railgun increases the launch efficiency when compared to a simple railgun setup. In a NGSPICE-simulation a DES and a simple railgun setup connected to an existing 10-MJ capacitor based power supply are compared. Important parameters like velocity, power and efficiency are used to quantify the performance gain, when using the mechanically more complex DES setup. Abstract

The South Pole Acoustic Test Setup (SPATS) has been built to evaluate the acoustic characteristics of the South Pole ice in the 10 to 100 kHz frequency range so that the feasibility and specific design of an acoustic neutrino detection array at South Pole can be evaluated. SPATS consists of three vertical strings that were deployed in the upper 400 meters of the South Pole ice cap in January 2007, using the upper part of IceCube holes. The strings form a triangular array with the longest baseline 421 meters. Each of them has 7 stages with one transmitter and one sensor module. Both are equipped with piezoelectric ceramic elements in order to produce or detect sound. Analog signals are brought to the surface on electric cables where they are digitized by a PC-based data acquisition system. The data from all three strings are collected on a master-PC in a central facility, from which they are sent to the northern hemisphere via a satellite link or locally stored on tape. Abstract

Astrophysical neutrinos in the EeV range (particularly those generated by the interaction of cosmic rays with the cosmic microwave background) promise to be a valuable tool to study astrophysics and particle physics at the highest energies. Much could be learned from temporal, spectral, and angular distributions of ~100 events, which could be collected by a detector with ~100 km^3 effective volume in a few years. Scaling the optical Cherenkov technique to this scale is prohibitive. However, using the thick ice sheet available at the South Pole, the radio and acoustic techniques promise to provide sufficient sensitivity with sparse instrumentation. The best strategy may be a hybrid approach combining all three techniques. A new array of acoustic transmitters and sensors, the South Pole Acoustic Test Setup, was installed in three IceCube holes in January 2007. The purpose of SPATS is to measure the attenuation length, background noise, and sound speed for 10-100 kHz acoustic waves. Favorable results would pave the way for a large hybrid array. SPATS is the first array to study the possibility of acoustic neutrino detection in ice, the medium expected to be best for the purpose. Abstract

In the field of neutrino astronomy, large volumes of optically transparent matter like glacial ice, lake water, or deep ocean water are used as detector media. Elementary particle interactions are studied using in situ detectors recording time distributions and fluxes of the faint photon fields of Cherenkov radiation generated by ultra-relativistic charged particles, typically muons or electrons. The Photonics software package was developed to determine photon flux and time distributions throughout a volume containing a light source through Monte Carlo simulation. Photons are propagated and time distributions are recorded throughout a cellular grid constituting the simulation volume, and Mie scattering and absorption are realised using wavelength and position dependent parameterisations. The photon tracking results are stored in binary tables for transparent access through ANSI-C and C++ interfaces. For higher-level physics applications, like simulation or reconstruction of particle events, it is then possible to quickly acquire the light yield and time distributions for a pre-specified set of light source and detector properties and geometries without real-time photon propagation. In this paper the Photonics light propagation routines and methodology are presented and applied to the IceCube and Antares neutrino telescopes. The way in which inhomogeneities of the Antarctic glacial ice distort the signatures of elementary particle interactions, and how Photonics can be used to account for these effects, is described., Comment: 22 pages, 8 Postscript figures, uses elsart.cls

Abstract

New LED-transmitters have been used to develop a new method of fast analog transmission of PMT pulses over large distances. The transmitters, consisting basically of InGaAsP LEDs with the maximum emission of light at 1300 nm, allow the transmission of fast photomultiplier pulses over distances of more than 2 km. The shape of the photomultiplier pulses is maintained, with an attenuation less than 1 dB/km. Typical applications of analog optical signal transmission are surface air shower detectors and underwater/ice neutrino experiments, which measure fast Cherenkov or scintillator pulses at large detector distances to the central DAQ system., Comment: 6 pages, postscript. Abstract

We present the results of a Monte-Carlo study of the sensitivity of the planned IceCube detector to predicted fluxes of muon neutrinos at TeV to PeV energies. A complete simulation of the detector and data analysis is used to study the detector's capability to search for muon neutrinos from sources such as active galaxies and gamma-ray bursts. We study the effective area and the angular resolution of the detector as a function of muon energy and angle of incidence. We present detailed calculations of the sensitivity of the detector to both diffuse and pointlike neutrino emissions, including an assessment of the sensitivity to neutrinos detected in coincidence with gamma-ray burst observations. After three years of datataking, IceCube will have been able to detect a point source flux of E2*dN/dE = 7*10^-9 cm^-2s^-1GeV at a 5-sigma significance, or, in the absence of a signal, place a 90 percent c.l. limit at a level E2*dN/dE = 2*10^-9 cm^-2s^-1GeV. A diffuse E-2 flux would be detectable at a minimum strength of E2*dN/dE = 1*10^-8 cm^-2s^-1sr^-1GeV. A gamma-ray burst model following the formulation of Waxman and Bahcall would result in a 5-sigma effect after the observation of 200 bursts in coincidence with satellite observations of the gamma-rays.

Abstract

Using the neutrino telescope AMANDA-II, we have conducted two analyses searching for neutrino-induced cascades from gamma-ray bursts. No evidence of astrophysical neutrinos was found, and limits are presented for several models. We also present neutrino effective areas which allow the calculation of limits for any neutrino production model. The first analysis looked for a statistical excess of events within a sliding window of 1 or 100 seconds (for short and long burst classes, respectively) during the years 2001-2003. The resulting upper limit on the diffuse flux normalization times E^2 for the Waxman-Bahcall model at 1 PeV is 1.6 x 10^-6 GeV cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1 (a factor of 120 above the theoretical prediction). For this search 90% of the neutrinos would fall in the energy range 50 TeV to 7 PeV. The second analysis looked for neutrino-induced cascades in coincidence with 73 bursts detected by BATSE in the year 2000. The resulting upper limit on the diffuse flux normalization times E^2, also at 1 PeV, is 1.5 x 10^-6 GeV cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1 (a factor of 110 above the theoretical prediction) for the same energy range. The neutrino-induced cascade channel is complementary to the up-going muon channel. Abstract

We present a search for point sources of high energy neutrinos using 3.8 years of data recorded by AMANDA-II during 2000-2006. After reconstructing muon tracks and applying selection criteria designed to optimally retain neutrino-induced events originating in the Northern Sky, we arrive at a sample of 6595 candidate events, predominantly from atmospheric neutrinos with primary energy 100 GeV to 8 TeV. Our search of this sample reveals no indications of a neutrino point source. We place the most stringent limits to date on $E^{-2}$ neutrino fluxes from points in the Northern Sky, with an average upper limit of $E^{2}\Phi_{\nu_{\mu} + \nu_{\tau}} \le$ 5.2 $\times$ 10$^{-11}$ TeV cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ on the sum of $\nu_{\mu}$ and $\nu_{\tau}$ fluxes, assumed equal, over the energy range from 1.9 TeV to 2.5 PeV., Comment: 10 pages, to appear in Phys. Abstract

We present the results of the analysis of neutrino observations by the Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA) correlated with photon observations of more than 400 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the Northern Hemisphere from 1997 to 2003. During this time period, AMANDA's effective collection area for muon neutrinos was larger than that of any other existing detector. Based on our observations of zero neutrinos during and immediately prior to the GRBs in the dataset, we set the most stringent upper limit on muon neutrino emission correlated with gamma-ray bursts. Assuming a Waxman-Bahcall spectrum and incorporating all systematic uncertainties, our flux upper limit has a normalization at 1 PeV of E^2{\Phi}_{\nu} {\leq} 6.0 \times 10^{-9} GeV cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1}, with 90% of the events expected within the energy range of ~10 TeV to ~3 PeV. The impact of this limit on several theoretical models of GRBs is discussed, as well as the future potential for detection of GRBs by next generation neutrino telescopes. Abstract

On 13 December 2006 the IceTop air shower array at the South Pole detected a major solar particle event. By numerically simulating the response of the IceTop tanks, which are thick Cherenkov detectors with multiple thresholds deployed at high altitude with no geomagnetic cut-off, we determined the particle energy spectrum in the energy range 0.6 to 7.6 GeV. This is the first such spectral measurement using a single instrument with a well defined viewing direction. We compare the IceTop spectrum and its time evolution with previously published results and outline plans for improved resolution of future solar particle spectra.
