The frequency stability of a laser locked to an optical reference cavity is fundamentally limited by thermal noise in the cavity length. These fluctuations are linked to material dissipation, which depends both on the temperature of the optical components and the material properties. Here, the design and experimental characterization of a sapphire optical cavity operated at 10 K with crystalline coatings at 1069 nm is presented. Theoretical estimates of the thermo-mechanical noise indicate a thermal noise floor below $\mathrm{4.5\times10^{-18}}$. Major technical noise contributions including vibrations, temperature fluctuations, and residual amplitude modulation are characterized in detail. The short-term performance is measured via a three-cornered hat analysis with two other cavity-stabilized lasers, yielding a noise floor of $1\times10^{-16}$. The long-term performance is measured against an optical lattice clock, indicating cavity stability at the level of $2\times10^{-15}$ for averaging times up to 10,000 s.

We define a range of new coarse geometric invariants based on various graph-theoretic measures of complexity for finite graphs, including: treewidth, pathwidth, cutwidth, search number, topological bandwidth, bandwidth, minimal linear arrangment, sumcut, profile, vertex and edge separation. We prove that, for bounded degree graphs, these invariants can be used to define functions which satisfy a strong monotonicity property, namely they are monotonically non-decreasing with respect to regular maps, and as such have potential applications in coarse geometry and geometric group theory. On the graph-theoretic side, we prove asymptotically optimal upper bounds on the treewidth, pathwidth, cutwidth, search number, topological bandwidth, vertex separation, edge separation, minimal linear arrangement, sumcut and profile for the family of all finite subgraphs of any bounded degree graph whose separation profile is known to be of the form $r^a\log(r)^b$ for some $a>0$. This large class includes the Diestel-Leader graph, all Cayley graphs of non-virtually cyclic polycyclic groups, uniform lattices in almost all connected unimodular Lie groups, and certain hyperbolic groups., Comment: 19 pages

Strong motivation for investing in quantum sensing arises from the need to investigate phenomena that are very weakly coupled to the matter and fields well described by the Standard Model. These can be related to the problems of dark matter, dark sectors not necessarily related to dark matter (for example sterile neutrinos), dark energy and gravity, fundamental constants, and problems with the Standard Model itself including the Strong CP problem in QCD. Resulting experimental needs typically involve the measurement of very low energy impulses or low power periodic signals that are normally buried under large backgrounds. Divalent atoms and ions with a singlet $S$ ground state and triplet $P$ excited state form the basis of many high-precision optical atomic clocks. Along with the metastable $^{3}\mathrm{P}_{0}$ clock state, these atomic systems also have a nearby metastable $^{3}\mathrm{P}_{2}$ state. We investigate the properties of the electric quadrupole $^{1}\mathrm{S}_0$$\leftrightarrow$$^{3}\mathrm{P}_{2}$ transition with a focus on enhancing already existing optical atomic clocks. In particular, we investigate the $^{1}\mathrm{S}_0$$\leftrightarrow$$^{3}\mathrm{P}_{2}$ transition in $^{27}\mathrm{Al}^{+}$ and calculate the differential polarizability, hyperfine effects, and other relevant atomic properties. We also discuss potential applications of this transition, notably that it provides two transitions with different sensitivities to systematic effects in the same species. In addition, we describe how the $^{1}\mathrm{S}_0$$\leftrightarrow$$^{3}\mathrm{P}_{2}$ transition can be used to search for physics beyond the Standard Model and motivate investigation of this transition in other existing optical atomic clocks., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures

We prove various obstructions to the existence of regular maps (or coarse embeddings) between commonly studied spaces. For instance, there is no regular map (or coarse embedding) $\mathbb H^n\to\mathbb H^{n-1}\times Y$ for $n\geq 3$, or $(T_3)^n \to (T_3)^{n-1}\times Y$ whenever $Y$ is a bounded degree graph with subexponential growth, where $T_3$ is the $3$-regular tree. We also resolve a question of Benjamini-Schramm-Tim\'ar, proving that there is no regular map $\mathbb H^2 \to T_3 \times Y$ whenever $Y$ is a bounded degree graph with at most polynomial growth, and no quasi-isometric embedding whenever $Y$ has subexponential growth. Finally, we show that there is no regular map $F^n\to \mathbb Z\wr F^{n-1}$ where $F$ is the free group on two generators. To prove these results, we introduce and study generalizations of asymptotic dimension which allow unbounded covers with controlled growth. In quantum logic spectroscopy (QLS), one species of trapped ion is used as a sensor to detect the state of an otherwise inaccessible ion species. This extends precision measurements to a broader class of atomic and molecular systems for applications like atomic clocks and tests of fundamental physics. Here, we develop a new technique based on a Schr\"{o}dinger cat interferometer to address the problem of scaling QLS to larger ion numbers. We demonstrate the basic features of this method using various combinations of $^{25}\text{Mg}^+$ logic ions and $^{27}\text{Al}^+$ spectroscopy ions. We observe higher detection efficiency by increasing the number of $^{25}\text{Mg}^+$ ions. Applied to multiple $^{27}\text{Al}^+$, this method will improve the stability of high-accuracy optical clocks and could enable Heisenberg-limited QLS., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures + supplemental material 8 pages, 4 figures

We prove estimates for the optimal volume of thick embeddings of finite graphs into symmetric spaces, generalising results of Kolmogorov-Barzdin and Gromov-Guth for embeddings into Euclidean spaces. We distinguish two very different behaviours depending on the rank of the non-compact factor. For rank at least 2, we construct thick embeddings of $N$-vertex graphs with volume $CN\ln(1+N)$ and prove that this is optimal. For rank at most $1$ we prove lower bounds of the form $cN^a$ for some (explicit) $a>1$ which depends on the dimension of the Euclidean factor and the conformal dimension of the boundary of the non-compact factor. The main tool is a coarse geometric analogue of a thick embedding called a coarse wiring, with the key property that the minimal volume of a thick embedding is comparable to the ``minimal volume'' of a coarse wiring for symmetric spaces of dimension at least $3$. In the appendix it is proved that for each $k\geq 3$ every bounded degree graph admits a coarse wiring into $\mathbb{R}^k$ with volume at most $CN^{1+\frac{1}{k-1}}$. Comparisons of high-accuracy optical atomic clocks \cite{Ludlow2015} are essential for precision tests of fundamental physics \cite{Safronova2018}, relativistic geodesy \cite{McGrew2018, Grotti2018, Delva2019}, and the anticipated redefinition of the SI second \cite{Riehle2018}. The scientific reach of these applications is restricted by the statistical precision of interspecies comparison measurements. The instability of individual clocks is limited by the finite coherence time of the optical local oscillator (OLO), which bounds the maximum atomic interrogation time. In this letter, we experimentally demonstrate differential spectroscopy \cite{Hume2016}, a comparison protocol that enables interrogating beyond the OLO coherence time. By phase-coherently linking a zero-dead-time (ZDT) \cite{Schioppo2017} Yb optical lattice clock with an Al$^+$ single-ion clock via an optical frequency comb and performing synchronised Ramsey spectroscopy, we show an improvement in comparison instability relative to our previous result \cite{network2020frequency} of nearly an order of magnitude. To our knowledge, this result represents the most stable interspecies clock comparison to date.

A subset of QuantISED Sensor PIs met virtually on May 26, 2020 to discuss a response to a charge by the DOE Office of High Energy Physics. In this document, we summarize the QuantISED sensor community discussion, including a consideration of HEP science enabled by quantum sensors, describing the distinction between Quantum 1.0 and Quantum 2.0, and discussing synergies/complementarity with the new DOE NQI centers and with research supported by other SC offices. Quantum 2.0 advances in sensor technology offer many opportunities and new approaches for HEP experiments. The DOE HEP QuantISED program could support a portfolio of small experiments based on these advances. QuantISED experiments could use sensor technologies that exemplify Quantum 2.0 breakthroughs. They would strive to achieve new HEP science results, while possibly spinning off other domain science applications or serving as pathfinders for future HEP science targets. QuantISED experiments should be led by a DOE laboratory, to take advantage of laboratory technical resources, infrastructure, and expertise in the safe and efficient construction, operation, and review of experiments. The QuantISED PIs emphasized that the quest for HEP science results under the QuantISED program is distinct from the ongoing DOE HEP programs on the energy, intensity, and cosmic frontiers. There is robust evidence for the existence of particles and phenomena beyond the Standard Model, including dark matter, dark energy, quantum gravity, and new physics responsible for neutrino masses, cosmic inflation, and the cosmic preference for matter over antimatter. Where is this physics and how do we find it? The QuantISED program can exploit new capabilities provided by quantum technology to probe these kinds of science questions in new ways and over a broader range of science parameters than can be achieved with conventional techniques.

Poincar\'e profiles are a family of analytically defined coarse invariants, which can be used as obstructions to the existence of coarse embeddings between metric spaces. In this paper we calculate the Poincar\'e profiles of all connected unimodular Lie groups, Baumslag-Solitar groups and Thurston geometries, demonstrating two substantially different types of behaviour. In the case of Lie groups, we obtain a dichotomy which extends both the dichotomy separating rank one and higher rank semisimple Lie groups and the dichotomy separating connected solvable unimodular Lie groups of polynomial and exponential growth. We provide equivalent algebraic, quasi-isometric and coarse geometric formulations of this dichotomy. Our results have many consequences for coarse embeddings, for instance we deduce that for groups of the form $N\times S$, where $N$ is a connected nilpotent Lie group, and $S$ is a simple Lie group of real rank 1, both the growth exponent of $N$, and the Ahlfors-regular conformal dimension of $S$ are non-decreasing under coarse embeddings. We use frequency comb-based optical two-way time-frequency transfer (O-TWTFT) to measure the optical frequency ratio of state-of-the-art ytterbium and strontium optical atomic clocks separated by a 1.5 km open-air link. Our free-space measurement is compared to a simultaneous measurement acquired via a noise-cancelled fiber link. Despite non-stationary, ps-level time-of-flight variations in the free-space link, ratio measurements obtained from the two links, averaged over 30.5 hours across six days, agree to $6\times10^{-19}$, showing that O-TWTFT can support free-space atomic clock comparisons below the $10^{-18}$ level.

Atomic clocks occupy a unique position in measurement science, exhibiting higher accuracy than any other measurement standard and underpinning six out of seven base units in the SI system. By exploiting higher resonance frequencies, optical atomic clocks now achieve greater stability and lower frequency uncertainty than existing primary standards. Here, we report frequency ratios of the $^{27}$Al$^+$, $^{171}$Yb and $^{87}$Sr optical clocks in Boulder, Colorado, measured across an optical network spanned by both fiber and free-space links. These ratios have been evaluated with measurement uncertainties between $6\times10^{-18}$ and $8\times10^{-18}$, making them the most accurate reported measurements of frequency ratios to date. We define Poincar\'{e} profiles of Dirichlet type for graphs of bounded degree, in analogy with the Poincar\'{e} profiles (of Neumann type) defined in [HMT19]. The obvious first definition yields nothing of interest, but an alternative definition yields a spectrum of profiles which are quasi-isometry invariants and monotone with respect to subgroup inclusion. Moreover, in the extremal cases $p=1$ and $p=\infty$, they detect the F\o lner function and the growth function respectively., Comment: 15 pages

We investigate groups whose Cayley graphs have poor\-ly connected subgraphs. We prove that a finitely generated group has bounded separation in the sense of Benjamini--Schramm--Tim\'ar if and only if it is virtually free. We then prove a gap theorem for connectivity of finitely presented groups, and prove that there is no comparable theorem for all finitely generated groups. Finally, we formulate a connectivity version of the conjecture that every group of type $F$ with no Baumslag-Solitar subgroup is hyperbolic, and prove it for groups with at most quadratic Dehn function., Comment: 14 pages. We generalize Gruber--Sisto's construction of the coned--off graph of a small cancellation group to build a partially ordered set $\mathcal{TC}$ of cobounded actions of a given small cancellation group whose smallest element is the action on the Gruber--Sisto coned--off graph. In almost all cases $\mathcal{TC}$ is incredibly rich: it has a largest element if and only if it has exactly 1 element, and given any two distinct comparable actions $[G\curvearrowright X] \preceq [G\curvearrowright Y]$ in this poset, there is an embeddeding $\iota:P(\omega)\to\mathcal{TC}$ such that $\iota(\emptyset)=[G\curvearrowright X]$ and $\iota(\mathbb N)=[G\curvearrowright Y]$. We use this poset to prove that there are uncountably many quasi--isometry classes of finitely generated group which admit two cobounded acylindrical actions on hyperbolic spaces such that there is no action on a hyperbolic space which is larger than both., Comment: 42 pages, 14 figures

We explore geometric conditions which ensure a given element of a finitely generated group is, or fails to be, generalized loxodromic; as part of this we prove a generalization of Sisto's result that every generalized loxodromic element is Morse. We provide a sufficient geometric condition for an element of a small cancellation group to be generalized loxodromic in terms of the defining relations and provide a number of constructions which prove that this condition is sharp., Comment: 22 pages. We introduce a spectrum of monotone coarse invariants for metric measure spaces called Poincar\'{e} profiles. The two extremes of this spectrum determine the growth of the space, and the separation profile as defined by Benjamini--Schramm--Tim\'{a}r. In this paper we focus on properties of the Poincar\'{e} profiles of groups with polynomial growth, and of hyperbolic spaces, where we deduce a connection between these profiles and conformal dimension. We introduce an obstruction to the existence of a coarse embedding of a given group or space into a hyperbolic group, or more generally into a hyperbolic graph of bounded degree. The condition we consider is "admitting exponentially many fat bigons", and it is preserved by a coarse embedding between graphs with bounded degree. Groups with exponential growth and linear divergence (such as direct products of two groups one of which has exponential growth, solvable groups that are not virtually nilpotent, and uniform higher-rank lattices) have this property and hyperbolic graphs do not, so the former cannot be coarsely embedded into the latter. Laser cooling and trapping of atoms and atomic ions has led to numerous advances including the observation of exotic phases of matter, development of exquisite sensors and state-of-the-art atomic clocks. The same level of control in molecules could also lead to profound developments such as controlled chemical reactions and sensitive probes of fundamental theories, but the vibrational and rotational degrees of freedom in molecules pose a formidable challenge for controlling their quantum mechanical states. Here, we use quantum-logic spectroscopy (QLS) for preparation and nondestructive detection of quantum mechanical states in molecular ions. We develop a general technique to enable optical pumping and preparation of the molecule into a pure initial state. This allows for the observation of high-resolution spectra in a single ion (here CaH+) and coherent phenomena such as Rabi flopping and Ramsey fringes. The protocol requires a single, far-off resonant laser, which is not specific to the molecule, so that many other molecular ions, including polyatomic species, could be treated with the same methods in the same apparatus by changing the molecular source. Combined with long interrogation times afforded by ion traps, a broad range of molecular ions could be studied with unprecedented control and precision, representing a critical step towards proposed applications, such as precision molecular spectroscopy, stringent tests of fundamental physics, quantum computing, and precision control of molecular dynamics., Comment: 38 pages in preprint format, 9 figures, 3 tables; added references

We build quasi--isometry invariants of relatively hyperbolic groups which detect the hyperbolic parts of the group; these are variations of the stable dimension constructions previously introduced by the authors. We prove that, given any finite collection of finitely generated groups $\mathcal{H}$ each of which either has finite stable dimension or is non-relatively hyperbolic, there exist infinitely many quasi--isometry types of one--ended groups which are hyperbolic relative to $\mathcal{H}$. Stable subgroups and the Morse boundary are two systematic approaches to collect and study the hyperbolic aspects of finitely generated groups. In this paper we unify and generalize these strategies by viewing any geodesic metric space as a countable union of stable subspaces: we show that every stable subgroup is a quasi--convex subset of a set in this collection and that the Morse boundary is recovered as the direct limit of the usual Gromov boundaries of these hyperbolic subspaces. We use this approach, together with results of Leininger--Schleimer, to deduce that there is no purely geometric obstruction to the existence of a non-virtually--free convex cocompact subgroup of a mapping class group. In addition, we define two new quasi--isometry invariant notions of dimension: the stable dimension, which measures the maximal asymptotic dimension of a stable subset; and the Morse capacity dimension, which naturally generalises Buyalo's capacity dimension for boundaries of hyperbolic spaces. We prove that every stable subset of a right--angled Artin group is quasi--isometric to a tree; and that the stable dimension of a mapping class group is bounded from above by a multiple of the complexity of the surface. In the case of relatively hyperbolic groups we show that finite stable dimension is inherited from peripheral subgroups. Finally, we show that all classical small cancellation groups and certain Gromov monster groups have stable dimension at most 2., Comment: Updated with comments from the referee. We use the interplay between combinatorial and coarse geometric versions of negative curvature to investigate the geometry of infinitely presented graphical $Gr'(1/6)$ small cancellation groups. In particular, we characterize their 'contracting geodesics', which should be thought of as the geodesics that behave hyperbolically. We show that every degree of contraction can be achieved by a geodesic in a finitely generated group. We construct the first example of a finitely generated group $G$ containing an element $g$ that is strongly contracting with respect to one finite generating set of $G$ and not strongly contracting with respect to another. In the case of classical $C'(1/6)$ small cancellation groups we give complete characterizations of geodesics that are Morse and that are strongly contracting. We show that many graphical $Gr'(1/6)$ small cancellation groups contain strongly contracting elements and, in particular, are growth tight. We construct uncountably many quasi-isometry classes of finitely generated, torsion-free groups in which every maximal cyclic subgroup is hyperbolically embedded. These are the first examples of this kind that are not subgroups of hyperbolic groups. We introduce and begin a systematic study of sublinearly contracting projections. We give two characterizations of Morse quasi-geodesics in an arbitrary geodesic metric space. One is that they are sublinearly contracting; the other is that they have completely superlinear divergence. We develop differential measurement protocols that circumvent the laser noise limit in the stability of optical clock comparisons by synchronous probing of two clocks using phase-locked local oscillators. This allows for probe times longer than the laser coherence time, avoids the Dick effect, and supports Heisenberg-limited measurement precision. We present protocols for such frequency comparisons and develop numerical simulations of the protocols with realistic noise sources. Entanglement is the key quantum resource for improving measurement sensitivity beyond classical limits. However, the production of entanglement in mesoscopic atomic systems has been limited to squeezed states, described by Gaussian statistics. Here we report on the creation and characterization of non-Gaussian many-body entangled states. We develop a general method to extract the Fisher information, which reveals that the quantum dynamics of a classically unstable system creates quantum states that are not spin squeezed but nevertheless entangled. The extracted Fisher information quantifies metrologically useful entanglement which we confirm by Bayesian phase estimation with sub shot-noise sensitivity. We experimentally demonstrate an atom number detector capable of simultaneous detection of two mesoscopic ensembles with single-atom resolution. Such a sensitivity is a prerequisite for quantum metrology at a precision approaching the Heisenberg limit. Our system is based on fluorescence detection of atoms in a novel hybrid trap in which a dipole barrier divides a magneto-optical trap into two separated wells. We introduce a noise model describing the various sources contributing to the measurement error and report a limit of up to 500 atoms for single-atom resolution in the atom number difference., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures
