The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the relationship between two methods used to assess implant stability, investigating whether both provide similar implant stability assessments for the same clinical case.A literature search was conducted on MEDLINE-PubMed and Scopus databases, without limitation of the publication period, up to November 2015. The following key words were used, with associations among them: "dental implant," "dental implants," "Osstell," "resonance frequency analysis," "implant stability quotient," "ISQ," "Periotest," "Periotest value," and "PTV." Inclusion criteria were English language, prospective, retrospective, and randomized controlled clinical trials that evaluated implant stability through use of resonance frequency analysis (RFA) and damping capacity analysis (DCA). The study should assess implant stability of only a specific region for all patients or discriminate results evaluated for each region if the analysis had been made in various regions; RFA and DCA should have been applied in the same implants and periods. Studies have been carefully selected, and data of interest were tabulated.Six studies met the inclusion criteria. Although there was significant numerical correlation between values obtained by both methods, data showed that less than half (46%) of cases coincided in relation to implant stability classification.It can be considered that there is not always a consensus and standardization in the classification of implant stability related to the values obtained by RFA and DCA devices, which could create disagreements and miscommunication among dentistry professionals.

Introduction: New materials are developed all the time to better suit the patients' needs, such as flexible injectable thermoplastic resins that provide more esthetics to patients using removable partial dentures. Aim: The objective of this study was to evaluate the color change, microhardness and flexural strength of an experimental flexible acrylic resin under the influence of thermocycling. Materials and Methods: This in vitro study was conducted in Aracatuba Dental School, UNESP University. Two types of samples were made, 30 in circular format (3×10 mm) for color and microhardness tests, and 60 in rectangular format (64×10×3.3 mm) for the flexural strength test. The samples were divided into three groups (n=10), one of the experimental flexible resin tested, one with a flexible resin already marketed (Sorriflex), and a control group of a conventional thermopolymerisable acrylic resin (Lucitone). After the preparation, color, microhardness and flexural strength readings were taken, initially and after 2000 thermocycling cycles. The obtained data was submitted to analysis of variance ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey’s test when necessary. Results: All resins presented a clinically acceptable color variation (ΔE), with no significant difference between resin type (p>0.05). Introduction: The dimensional alterations of denture base jeopardize adaptation and retention associated to altered occlusion, which are considered relevant factors for fabrication of complete dentures. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate linear tooth displacement during processing of maxillary complete dentures submitted to two inclusion methods and conventional polymerization. Material and method: Twenty maxillary complete dentures were fabricated: G1 – inclusion with silicone barrier, and G2 – inclusion with dental stone type IV barrier. Points were marked on incisal surface of right central incisor and cusp of second molars to allow linear measurement of the replicas through the software AutoCAD. The evaluation of artificial teeth displacement for both groups was carried out in different moments: a) waxed denture; b) waxed denture partially invested with stone or silicone barrier; c) after complete flasking; d) denture into flask after polymerization; e) denture attached to the cast after deflasking; f) denture separated from the cast; g) denture after finishing and polishing; h) denture after storage in water at 36° during 7 days. Result: Linear alterations occurred on artificial teeth positioning for both groups and in all periods of inclusion, with higher alterations for group G2. The data from phases c and d were significant different from other phases when compared intra groups, for both inclusion methods evaluated. Conclusion: Group G2 exhibited the greatest alterations. After polymerization, group G1(Inclusion with silicone barrier complemented with dental stone type III) demonstrated higher distance between the points (expansion) while group G2 revealed reduced distance (contraction).

The aim of this study was to assess the stress patterns on the peri-implant zone and residual alveolar ridge in different overdenture attachment system designs by the photoelasticity method. Four attachments systems were tested: O-ring, ERA, Bar-clip, and Bar-clip/O-ring association. The prostheses were loaded with 100 N in five pre-determined points and the photoelastic model was evaluated by a circular polariscope. The anterior load, O-ring, and ERA showed better stress distribution in relation to the bars systems, which presented stress levels surrounding implants. The molar load, Bar-clip/O-ring association, presented the biggest stress concentration on the peri-implant region in relation to the others. When the second molar was loaded, there was a concentration of stress in the alveolar ridge in all situations analyzed. Within the limitation of this “in vitro” study, it could be concluded that there were biomechanical differences among the attachments systems analyzed, principally between isolated and the bars systems. The O-ring showed better stress distribution and the Bar-clip/O-ring showed higher stress concentration.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar através de método fotográfico, as alterações dimensionais lineares de três marcas de alginato, dois com tempo de presa estendido (Cavex Color Change e Hidrogum 5) e um convencional (Jeltrate dustless), em quatro períodos de tempo (0, 8, 32 e 80 horas). Material e Método: Com base em um modelo superior de uma boca dentada foi obtido um modelo em resina acrílica, que serviu como padrão para a obtenção dos moldes estudados. Sobre os dentes 14, 17, 24 e 27 foram inseridas marcas que serviram como referência de mensuração. Com uma moldeira em resina acrílica confeccionada sobre este modelo, produziram-se cinco moldes para cada marca de alginato, um de cada vez, sendo os mesmos fotografados em estativa e máquina fotográfica Nikon D50, com distância preestabelecida para todas as fotos. As imagens foram mensuradas no programa Corel Draw. Com base nos valores obtidos dos moldes, e do modelo padrão foi possível estabelecer as alterações dimensionais lineares que ocorreram nas três marcas de alginato, nos tempos estabelecidos. Resultados: Não houve diferença estatística significante entre as três marcas de alginato estudadas. Conclusão: Concluiu-se que a estabilidade dimensional linear dos moldes dos três alginatos estudados estão inseridos num nível aceitável para produzir modelos adequados e que não houve diferença estatística significante entre eles.Descritores: Alginatos; Materiais para Moldagem Odontológica; Precisão da Medição Dimensional.

The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate clinical studies on the follow-up survival of implants inserted in the zygomatic bone for maxillary rehabilitation. A comprehensive search of studies published from 2000 to July 2012 and listed in the PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases was performed in accordance with the PRISMA statement. Relevant studies were selected according to predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The initial database search yielded 751 titles. After filtering, 313 abstracts were selected, culminating in 42 full text articles. Application of eligibility criteria led to the elimination of 17 articles. Hence 25 full-text articles were considered clinically relevant and were included. Calculations of the interval survival rates and cumulative survival rates of implants could be carried out on the data extracted from the final list of included studies for the different time intervals. These studies reported the insertion of a total of 1541 zygomatic implants and 33 implant failures. Failure generally occurred during the first year interval and was related to clinical complications, such as recurrent acute and chronic sinusitis. After a 36-month follow-up, the survival rate was 97.86%. Additional studies with longer follow-up periods, including the number of zygomatic implants inserted and details of the variations in the surgical techniques used and the impact of the maxillary morphology are still required.

Because the biomechanical behavior of dental implants is different from that of natural tooth, clinical problems may occur. The mechanism of stress distribution and load transfer to the implant/bone interface is a critical issue affecting the success rate of implants. Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct a brief literature review of the available stress analysis methods to study implant-supported prosthesis loading and to discuss their contributions in the biomechanical evaluation of oral rehabilitation with implants. Several studies have used experimental, analytical, and computational models by means of finite element models (FEM), photoelasticity, strain gauges and associations of these methods to evaluate the biomechanical behavior of dental implants. The FEM has been used to evaluate new components, configurations, materials, and shapes of implants. The greatest advantage of the photoelastic method is the ability to visualize the stresses in complex structures, such as oral structures, and to observe the stress patterns in the whole model, allowing the researcher to localize and quantify the stress magnitude. Strain gauges can be used to assess in vivo and in vitro stress in prostheses, implants, and teeth. Some authors use the strain gauge technique with photoelasticity or FEM techniques. These methodologies can be widely applied in dentistry, mainly in the research field. Therefore, they can guide further research and clinical studies by predicting some disadvantages and streamlining clinical time.

Esthetics is important for success of implant-supported prostheses. This study aimed to review esthetics concepts for implant treatment. Research in the PubMed database included studies published from 1995 to 2010 with the keywords implant esthetics, implant-supported prostheses, and esthetics. Forty-five studies were evaluated regarding the presurgical planning, surgical phase, and temporary and final restoration phases. It was concluded that esthetics in implant-supported prostheses results from a multidisciplinary approach from planning until insertion of the final restoration.

The aim of the present study was to report a modified protocol for immediate implant-supported full-arch rehabilitation on three interforaminal implants and two implants placed in the posterior mandible, one on each side. This article describes a treatment protocol that can be used to reduce the time required for the fabrication and placement of an implant-supported prosthesis. Introduction: The use of removable partial denture (RPD) is considered as low-cost and common treatment option to rehabilitate edentulous areas. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological data of patients rehabilitated with removable partial denture (RPD) in order to assess treatment survival rate and failures. Materials and Methods: Epidemiological data and medical records of patients treated with RPD between 2007 and 2012 at the RPD discipline of a Brazilian University (Aracatuba Dental School- UNESP) were evaluated as well as dental records of patients who underwent RPD treatments (fabrication or repairs) between 2000 and 2010. Factors such as gender, age, presence of systemic disease, main complaint, edentulous arch, period and cause of denture replacement and the prosthesis characteristics were recorded. The chi-square test was used to assess the differences between the variables and the Kaplan Meyer to assess the survival of the RPDs evaluated. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2016-02-17 Photoelastic analysis was used to evaluate the biomechanical behaviour of implant-supported, double-screwed crowns with different connection systems and cantilever lengths. Three models were made in PL-2 photoelastic resin and divided into six groups, on the basis of the implant connection system (external hexagon [EH] or Morse taper [MT]), type of abutment (Mini Pilar [Neodent, Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil] or UCLA) and number of crowns in the cantilever (one or two). The implant-prosthesis unit was placed in a circular polariscope. Occlusal surfaces of the crowns were subjected to 100-N loads in the axial and oblique (45°) directions in a universal testing machine (EMIC). Generated stresses were recorded and analysed qualitatively in a graphics program (Adobe Photoshop). Under axial loading, all of the groups had similar numbers of fringes, which were increased when the crowns were subjected to oblique loading. The highest number of fringes was found during oblique loading in the EH + Mini Pilar group. In conclusion, although the type of implant connection system did not have a direct influence on the stress distribution for axial loading, the cantilever length did have a direct influence on stress distribution. Models with two crowns in the cantilever showed more stress, with a greater concentration of force on the cervical part of the implant. The purposes of this study were to photoelastically measure the biomechanical behavior of 4 implants retaining different cantilevered bar mandibular overdenture designs and to compare a fixed partial denture (FPD). A photoelastic model of a human edentulous mandible was fabricated, which contained 4 screw-type implants (3.75 × 10 mm) embedded in the parasymphyseal area. An FPD and 3 overdenture designs with the following attachments were evaluated: 3 plastic Hader clips, 1 Hader clip with 2 posterior resilient cap attachments, and 3 ball/O-ring attachments. Vertical occlusal forces of 100 N were applied between the central incisor and unilaterally to the right and left second premolars and second molars. Stresses that developed in the supporting structure were monitored photoelastically and recorded photographically. The results showed that the anterior loading, the overdenture with 3 plastic Hader clips, displayed the largest stress concentration at the medium implant. With premolar loading, the FPD and overdenture with 3 plastic Hader clips displayed the highest stresses to the ipsilateral terminal implant. With molar loading, the overdenture with 3 ball/O-ring attachments displayed the most uniform stress distribution in the posterior edentulous ridge, with less overloading in the terminal implant. It was concluded that vertical forces applied to the bar-clip overdenture and FPD created immediate stress patterns of greater magnitude and concentration on the ipsilateral implants, whereas the ball/O-ring attachments transferred minimal stress to the implants. The increased cantilever in the FPD caused the highest stresses to the terminal implant.

The demand for aesthetic restorations has increased during the last years. Dental ceramics are a successful alternative for some cases because of aesthetics and biocompatibility. Therefore, the aim of this literature review was to present the factors necessary to fabricate all-ceramic restorations with aesthetics similar to natural dentition. A search of English-language peer-review literature was completed using MEDLINE database from 1975 to 2009 including the keywords "aesthetic," "metal-free crown," "all-ceramic," and "color." It was observed that several factors influence aesthetics of all-ceramic restorations. Color scale, light source during color evaluation, characteristic of core material, color of supporting tooth, presence of root post, and type of cement are clinical factors that may influence color of the restorations. Laboratorial factors as technique for ceramic condensation, thickness, temperature, and number of firing cycles also influence the result of these crowns. Although several clinical and laboratorial factors influence aesthetics of all-ceramic restorations, the aesthetic success and longevity of these restorations depend on the integration with surrounding periodontal tissue.

Introduction and Objective: To analyze if axial loads of 50 N and 100 N, applied on an implant of 3.75 X 10 mm (Conexão-Jaú, SP, Brazil) fixed on the central portion of a prototype of the mandible with and without support base, generate isochromatic fringes of different intensity and ways. Material and methods: The sample was a segment of the mandible with 115 mm in length, 30 mm height,and 12 mm in thickness, from a block of #7 rose wax. This matrix was adapted to a modified articulator in such way that its base could or not keep contact with the lower arm of the articulator, simply by modifying the support axis. An implant was put perpendicular to the segment of the mandible’s body and then the photoelastic model obtained. The healing abutment was screwed to the implant to receive loads from 50 N to 100 N, with the model with or withoutcontact of its base with the inferior arm of the articulator. Results: Alterations in the reflections of the colors was observed when the implants had been submitted to loads of 50 N and 100 N with or without supported base. Conclusion: Based on the results, it can be concluded that during the photoelasticity analyses alterations in the color standards occurred depending on the support of the sample and the applied load.

During the process of facial rehabilitation, the mobility of ocular prostheses must be considered. Whereas some factors depend exclusively on the dentist, such as molding techniques and selection of material for denture construction, regarding ocular rehabilitation, factors, such as type of surgery, whether to adopt implants, and the use of lubricants, deserve special attention owing to their integration and their association with other factors pertaining exclusively to the patient. To establish harmony, and with the intention of aiding the dentist, after a discerning evaluation, the authors of this study report the factors that provide greater or less mobility to ocular prostheses and conceal the prosthesis in a more natural way, thereby contributing toward achieving a favorable aesthetic result in rehabilitations.

This study investigated the efficacy of different techniques for the union of fragments of a denture before repair and on the accuracy of the reposition.For this study, 20 maxillary dentures made with Lucitone 550 heat-cured resin were used. Points were determined with a scanner on the cusp of the teeth, as a measurement of the segments. After digitisation, each model was exported to the AUTOCAD R 14 program and two-dimensional measurements of the distances between the marked points were made. After the initial analysis, the dentures were fractured into two segments using an impact test machine. For the repair, maxillary dentures were divided into two groups; in the first, the repair was carried out using Kerr's sticky wax and in the second group, Super Bonder was used to join the fragments, with subsequent inclusion of DENTSPLY Repair Material resin. After the repair, the points of the maxillary dentures were measured again. The numerical values obtained were tabulated to compare the measurements before fracture and after the repair. For statistical analysis, analysis of variance was employed, using a single factor and double factor, followed by the Tukey test with a reliability of 95%.The results demonstrated a statistically significant difference between the materials used to join the dentures for repair, where the dentures were joined with sticky wax presented a larger variation in the distances between the points.The variation in distances between the points is influenced by the agent of repair.

Cancer is regarded as abnormal cellular multiplication; it is not controlled by the organism, and its cells present a differentiated DNA. Initially, the disease does not show clinical signs, but it can be diagnosed by laboratory examinations. When tumors are present in the maxillofacial area, the carrier can lose structures in this area, resulting to the carrier's social environment exclusion. This article aims to show incidences and causes of malignant neoplasias in the maxillofacial area.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the artificial tooth positional changes following the flasking and polymerization of complete dentures by a combination of two flasking methods and two polymerization techniques using computer graphic measurements. Materials and Methods: Four groups of waxed complete dentures (n = 10) were invested and polymerized using the following techniques: (1) adding a second investment layer of gypsum and conventional water bath polymerization (Control), (2) adding a second investment layer of gypsum and polymerization with microwave energy (Gypmicro), (3) adding a second investment layer of silicone (Zetalabor) and conventional polymerization (Silwater), and (4) adding a second investment layer of silicone and polymerization with microwave energy (Silmicro). For each specimen, six segments of interdental distances (A to F) were measured to determine the artificial tooth positions in the waxed and polymerized stages using software program AutoCad R14. The mean values of the changes were statistically compared by univariate ANOVA with Tukey post-hoc test at 5% significance. Results: There were no significant differences among the four groups, except for segment D of the Silmicro group (−0.004 ± 0.032 cm) in relation to the Gypwater group (0.044 ± 0.031 cm) (p < 0.05), which presented, repectively, expansion and shrinkage after polymerization. Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, it was concluded that although the differences were not statistically significant, the use of a silicone investment layer when flasking complete dentures resulted in the least positional changes of the artificial teeth regardless of the polymerization technique.

Purpose: The longevity of an ocular prosthesis is directly related to the resistance to erosion of its material. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of chemical disinfection and the method of investment on the microhardness of ocular prosthesis acrylic resin. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two test specimen investments were obtained in two silicones. A segment was cut in each test specimen, and each specimen was fixed in an acrylic disk. The specimens were then polished and submitted to the first microhardness test before immersion in distilled water and incubation for 2 months. During this 2-month period, the specimens were immersed in a water bath at 37°C and were disinfected daily; half were disinfected with neutral soap and the other half were disinfected with 4% chlorhexidine gluconate. After the storage phase and disinfection, a second microhardness test was performed. The surface microhardness values for the acrylic resins were submitted to ANOVA, followed by the Tukey test. Results: The disinfection and the period of storage did not statistically influence the surface microhardness of the acrylic resin, independent of the method of investment of the specimens (Zetalabor or Vipi Sil). The investment of specimens with Zetalabor silicone presented a greater surface hardness, independent of the type of disinfection and the period of storage. Conclusions: Based on these results, we suggest that the microhardness of the resin evaluated was not influenced by the method of disinfection or the time of storage used and was affected only by the investment material.

Objetivo: a utilizacao de metodos de regeneracao tecidual tem sido amplamente empregada na Implantodontia em situacoes clinicas com deficiencias ou limitacoes anatomicas que impossibilitam a instalacao de implantes osseointegrados. A evolucao no desenvolvimento de biomateriais revolucionou esta modalidade terapeutica facilitando a resolucao clinica de casos com deficiencias teciduais. Sendo assim, o intuito deste trabalho foi realizar a descricao de um caso clinico abordando os metodos, tecnicas e materiais empregados em regeneracao tecidual guiada aplicada a implantodontia. Relato de Caso: Um caso clinico de um paciente que recebeu implante dentario do tipo cone-morse (regiao: 15) e descrito. Houve necessidade de utilizacao de biomaterial e membrana na parede vestibular do alveolo. Apos o periodo de osseointegracao, realizou-se a cirurgia de reabertura e, confeccionou-se um provisorio imediato. Decorridos 2 meses de acompanhamento, realizou-se a confeccao da protese definitiva envolvendo outros elementos adjacentes. Consideracoes finais: A tecnica de regeneracao ossea guiada empregada apresentou desempenho satisfatorio. O paciente demonstrou-se favoravel no quesito de estetica e funcao. Entretanto, mais estudos controlados e com maior periodo de acompanhamento sao necessarios para analises de previsibilidade.

For this, a bibliographical research was performed in Pubmed database using the following terms: eye amputation, eye trauma, phantom eye syndrome, phantom pain, and quality of life, associated or not. Thirteen studies were selected, besides some relevant references contained in the selected manuscripts and other studies hallowed in the literature. Thus, 56 articles were included in this review. The phantom eye syndrome is defined as any sensation reported by the patient with anophthalmia, originated anophthalmic cavity. In phantom eye syndrome, at least one of these three symptoms has to be present: phantom vision, phantom pain, and phantom sensations. This syndrome has a direct influence on the quality of life of the patients, and psychological support is recommended before and after the amputation of the eyeball as well as aid in the treatment of the syndrome. Therefore, it is suggested that, for more effective treatment of phantom eye syndrome, drug therapy should be associated with psychological approach. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the etiology, clinical manifestations, and treatment options of dental implants fractures through a literature review and to relate a clinical report. Methods: A literature review was performed using the Medline database and this paper describes a case demonstrating the management of implant fracture. Twenty two articles were selected in the present literature review. Results: Nowadays the use of dental implants to rehabilitate completely and partially edentulous patients became the best treatment option; however, this treatment is suitable to failure. The fracture of implant body is a possible complication. The fracture of implant body is a late complication and is related to the failure in implant design or material, non-passive fitting of the prosthetic crown and overloading. Clinically, prosthesis instability and spontaneous bleeding are observed. Three options of treatment have been indicated: complete removal of implant fragment, maintenance of implant fragment, and surface preparation of the fragment with insertion of a new abutment. Conclusion: The literature indicates the complete removal of the fragment as the best treatment option.

O propósito deste estudo foi avaliar a alteração dimensional linear e ocorrência ou não de porosidades em quatro tipos de resina acrílicas. Foram analisadas as resinas acrílicas de marca comercial: Clássico, QC 20, Vipi Dent e Clássico Onda Cryl. Os métodos de polimerização variaram entre: convencionais, recomendados pelos frabricantes, e através de energia de microondas, com ou sem polimento químico, em aparelho próprio da marca comercial Termotron.

Amputations affect both the physical and the psychological aspects of an individual, causing significant impact on self-esteem. The main causes of finger amputations are work-related accidents with dangerous machinery, road traffic accidents, and animal bites, as well as systemic diseases such as diabetes. This report aims to describe a simple technique for fabrication of implant-retained finger prosthesis with a modified base of the retention system.The O-Ring retention system was used with a modified hexagon-shaped base and a metallic capsule adapted to the acrylic resin to attach the prosthesis to the implant.The prosthesis was made with silicone, and after osseointegration, it was installed without complications, leading to a patient satisfied with the end result and encouraged to return to social life.Restoring self-esteem in the patient and static and functional rehabilitation.

Although the long-term success of implant treatment has been well- established, failures can still occur and the smoking habit has been reported as a risk factor for implant loss. A literature review on the effects of smoking on the survival of dental implants was undertaken. Methods and Results. Medline database was used to carry out the review with the keywords “osseointegration”, “smoking” and “bone healing”. The cigarette has more than 4,000 bioactive chemical components with potential toxic effects to human tissues including bone. Nicotine is the main component of the cigarette and it is frequently associated with bone healing failures. Since smoking negatively affects the osseointegration of dental implants, the main target is to quit the consumption of cigarettes. Conclusion. Nevertheless, the smoking habit should not be an absolute contraindication for implant treatment, but, patients should be advised that they are at a greater risk of implant failure. The purpose of this study was to compare the dental movement that occurs during the processing of maxillary complete dentures with 3 different base thicknesses, using 2 investment methods, and microwave polymerization.A sample of 42 denture models was randomly divided into 6 groups (n = 7), with base thicknesses of 1.25, 2.50, and 3.75 mm and gypsum or silicone flask investment. Points were demarcated on the distal surface of the second molars and on the back of the gypsum cast at the alveolar ridge level to allow linear and angular measurement using AutoCAD software. The data were subjected to analysis of variance with double factor, Tukey test and Fisher (post hoc).Angular analysis of the varying methods and their interactions generated a statistical difference (P = 0.023) when the magnitudes of molar inclination were compared. Tooth movement was greater for thin-based prostheses, 1.25 mm (-0.234), versus thick 3.75 mm (0.2395), with antagonistic behavior. Prosthesis investment with silicone (0.053) showed greater vertical change compared with the gypsum investment (0.032). There was a difference between the point of analysis, demonstrating that the changes were not symmetric.All groups evaluated showed change in the position of artificial teeth after processing. The complete denture with a thin base (1.25 mm) and silicone investment showed the worst results, whereas intermediate thickness (2.50 mm) was demonstrated to be ideal for the denture base.

O propósito desse trabalho foi investigar a movimentação dentária que ocorre durante o processamento de prótesestotais superiores, avaliando a posição relativa dos dentes artificiais das dentaduras quando incluídas comtrês diferentes métodos e submetidas à polimerização por banho de água quente. Dezoito dentaduras superioresforam confeccionadas e separadas em três grupos de seis espécimes de acordo com o tipo de inclusão; com gessopedra tipo III, com muralha de silicone ou com muralha de gesso especial. Para as mensurações das movimentaçõesdentárias utilizou-se um guia de resina acrílica com pontos pré-determinados que permitiam demarcarpontos referência sobre as cúspides dos dentes. Foi utilizado o software AutoCad R14 para a tomada das medidasentre os pontos. Os nossos resultados nos permitiram concluir que: a) todos os grupos estudados sofreramalterações em maior ou menor grau, b) a inclusão pelo método da muralha de gesso especial mostrou-se commenores alterações quando comparadas com a inclusão em gesso pedra e muralha de silicone, c) o triângulomaior formado pelos segmentos A (molar-molar), B (molar-incisivo) e F (incisivo-molar) foi o que sofreu maioresalterações.

Empiricamente, tem-se utilizado o alisamento do alginato com o dedo umedecido após o carregamento da moldeira, com a justificativa, de se obter moldes com número reduzido de bolhas e irregularidades, fato que tem sido observado por alguns autores, sem saber no entanto, se existe diferença entre essas técnicas no que diz respeito às diferentes formulações de alginato. Assim, o propósito desse estudo foi avaliar a presença de bolhas superficiais de 3 marcas de alginato, quando submetidas à duas técnicas de moldagem; com carregamento convencional com a espátula e com o carregamento seguido do alisamento com dedo umedecido em água. Foi confeccionada uma matriz em resina acrílica, representando um maxilar edêntulo cujo palato foi ligeiramente modificado a fim de apresentar superfície plana. O estudo foi dividido em 6 grupos de acordo com a técnica de moldagem e com o material utilizado (Jeltrate, Jeltrate Plus e Hidrogum), consistindo em dez moldes para cada grupo. Em função da introdução de novas marcas comerciais de materiais odontológicos e se existe diferença na aplicação desses materiais, o propósito desse estudo foi o de avaliar a influência de diferentes materiais de inclusão de próteses totais superiores através da análise da movimentação dos dentes artificiais. Para tanto foram confeccionadas quarenta próteses totais superiores, com semelhanças dimensionais, através de um gabarito padrão. Essas próteses foram divididas em quatro grupos com dez espécimes cada, de acordo com o tipo de resina para inclusão (Vipwave; Ondacryl) e o tipo de silicone (Zetalabor; Vip-sil) utilizado no revestimento. Foram demarcados pontos sobre os dentes, que serviram de referência para as mensurações dos segmentos (entre os dentes), através do software AutoCad 2000. As mensurações foram realizadas em três momentos: após o enceramento; após a demuflagem e após a separação do modelo. O propósito desse estudo foi o de verificar a influência do polimento sobre a posição relativa dos dentes artificiais de próteses totais superiores, quando essas são confeccionadas com diferentes tipos de materiais ou associações, analisando para tanto à diferença entre as distâncias dos dentes pelo método de computação gráfica. Foram confeccionadas quarenta próteses totais superiores idênticas, sendo divididas em oito grupos de cinco espécimes cada de acordo com o tipo de resina (Vipi-wave e Onda-cryl), tipo de silicone para inclusão (Vipi-sil e Zetalabor) e tipo de polimento. As próteses foram polimerizadas em microondas, demufladas e submetidas ao polimento químico e ao polimento mecânico. Em cada fase as próteses foram digitalizadas em scanner de mesa e suas imagens exportadas para o software AutoCad 2000 que possibilitou a mensuração dos segmentos entre os pontos previamente demarcados nos dentes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical behavior of a mandibular distal extension removable partial denture (DERPD) associated with an implant and different retention system, by bidimensional finite element method. Five hemimandible models with a canine and external hexagon implant at second molar region associated with DERPD were simulated: model A, hemimandible with a canine and a DERPD; model B, hemimandible with a canine and implant with a healing abutment associated to a DERPD; model C, hemimandible with a canine and implant with an ERA attachment associated to a DERPD; model D, hemimandible with a canine and implant with an O'ring attachment associated to a DERPD; and model E, hemimandible with a canine and implant-supported prosthesis associated to a DERPD. Cusp tips were loaded with 50 N of axial or oblique force (45 degrees). Finite element analysis was performed in ANSYS 9.0. model E showed the higher displacement and overload in the supporting tissues; the patterns of stress distribution around the dental apex of models B, C, and D were similar. The association between a DERPD and an osseointegrated implant using the ERA or O'ring systems shows lower stress values. Oblique forces showed higher stress values and displacement. Oblique forces increased the displacement and stress levels in all models; model C displayed the best stress distribution in the supporting structures; healing abutment, ERA, and O'ring systems were viable with RPD, but DERPD association with a single implant-supported prosthesis was nonviable.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2010-04-01 The purpose of present study was to analyze the effect of pigmentation and chemical disinfection on the initial and the permanent deformation of two silicones (Silved Selant and Brascoved) for facial prosthesis. Initial and permanent deformation tests samples (20 mm × 12.5 mm) were made following the manufacturer's instructions. For each silicone (n= 40), ten samples were used for pigmentation with make up power, ten with iron oxide, ten with ceramics power and tem were tested without pigmentation. Five samples of each group were submitted to chemical disinfection using a 2 % Chlorhexidine spray. All samples were immersed in physiological saline and stored in an oven at 35 ° ± 1 °C. After 90 days, the samples were submitted to initial and permanent deformation tests using a dial indicator. For both properties, data were analyzed by Tukey's test (a= 0.05). The results showed that all the materials had initial and permanent deformation regardless of pigmentation and chemical disinfection. The groups were used for pigmentation with iron oxide showed less initial and permanent deformation when were submitted to the chemical disinfection regardless the silicone used. The technique presented in this article presents a protocol for treatment that reduces the time required for the fabrication and placement of an implant supported prosthesis. It also offers improved patient comfort at a lower cost when compared to conventional technology.

The purpose of this study was to present a literature review about photoelasticity, a laboratory method for evaluation of implants prosthesis behavior. Fixed or removable prostheses function as levers on supporting teeth, allowing forces to cause tooth movement if not carefully planned. Hence, during treatment planning, the dentist must be aware of the biomechanics involved and prevent movement of supporting teeth, decreasing lever-type forces generated by these prosthesis. Photoelastic analysis has great applicability in restorative dentistry as it allows prediction and minimization of biomechanical critical points through modifications in treatment planning.

The aim of this study was to compare splinting techniques for impression copings of osseointegrated implants with different angulations.Replicas (N = 24) of a metal matrix (control) containing two implants at 90 degrees and 65 degrees in relation to the horizontal surface were obtained by using four impression techniques: Technique 1 (T1), direct technique with square copings without union in open trays; Technique 2 (T2), square copings splinted with dental floss and autopolymerizing acrylic resin; Technique 3 (T3),square copings splinted with dental floss and autopolymerizing acrylic resin, sectioned and splinted again with autopolymerizing acrylic resin; Technique 4 (T4), square copings splinted with prefabricated acrylic resin bar. The impression material was polyether. The replicas were individually scanned to capture the images, which were assessed in a graphic computation program. The program allowed the angulation between the bases of the replicas and the reading screws to be measured. The images of the replicas were compared with the matrix image (control), and the differences in angulations from the control image were calculated. The analysis of variance and the Tukey test for comparisons (p0.05) were used for statistical analysis.All groups showed significant differences in the implant angulations in comparison with the control group (p0.05). Group T1 showed the highest difference (1.019 degrees ) followed by groups T2 (0.747 degrees ), T3 (0.516 degrees ), and T4 (0.325 degrees ), which showed the lowest angular alteration compared to the control group. There were significant differences between inclined and straight implants in all the groups, except in group T4.Based on the results, the splinting of pick-up impression copings is indicated for osseointegrated implant impressions. The square copings splinted with a prefabricated acrylic resin bar presented the best results among the pick-up impression techniques evaluated in this study.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2009-01-01 Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate by a visual method of comparison the color stability of nonpigmented and pigmented facial silicones after accelerated aging. Materials and Methods: Two kinds of silicones were used in this study; one specifically formulated for facial prostheses and the other an acetic silicone for industrial use. Twenty-four trial bodies were made for each silicone. These were divided into colorless and intrinsically pigmented groups: ceramic, make-up, and iron oxide. The groups were submitted to accelerated aging for nonmetallic materials. An initial reading and subsequent readings were made at 163, 351, 692, and 1000 hours using a visual method of comparison. The values were annotated in a spreadsheet by two observers, according to scores elaborated for this study. Results: All groups presented color stability in the visual method. According to the results obtained and analyzed in this study, we can conclude that both silicones, Silastic 732 RTV and Silastic MDX 4-4210, behaved similarly, they can therefore be indicated for use in maxillofacial prosthesis. The time factor of aging influenced negatively, independently of the pigmentation, or lack of it, and of silicones and no group had visually noticeable alterations in any of the accelerated aging time, independently of the addition or not of pigments. The aim of this study was to compare 2 different methods of assessment of implants at different inclinations (90 degrees and 65 degrees)--with a profilometer and AutoCAD software.Impressions (n = 5) of a metal matrix containing 2 implants, 1 at 90 degrees to the surface and 1 at 65 degrees to the surface, were obtained with square impression copings joined together with dental floss splinting covered with autopolymerizing acrylic resin, an open custom tray, and vinyl polysiloxane impression material. Measurement of the angles (in degrees) of the implant analogs were assessed by the same blinded operator with a profilometer and through analysis of digitized images by AutoCAD software. For each implant analog, 3 readings were performed with each method. The results were subjected to a nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test, with Por = .05 considered significant.For implants perpendicular to the horizontal surface of the specimen (90 degrees), there were no significant differences between the mean measurements obtained with the profilometer (90.04 degrees) and AutoCAD (89.95 degrees; P = .9142). In the analyses of the angled implants at 65 degrees in relation to the horizontal surface of the specimen, significant differences were observed (P = .0472) between the mean readings with the profilometer (65.73 degrees) and AutoCAD (66.25 degrees).The degrees of accuracy of implant angulation recording vary among the techniques available and may vary depending on the angle of the implant. Further investigation is needed to determine the best test conditions and the best measuring technique for determination of the angle of the implant in vitro.

Obturators and facial prostheses are important not only in rehabilitation and aesthetics, but also in patient re-socialisation. The level of reintegration is directly related to the degree of satisfaction with rehabilitation. So, the maxillofacial prosthetics must provide patient satisfaction during treatment. This study aimed to search information in database and conduct a literature review on patient satisfaction with maxillofacial prosthesis. The problems experienced by these patients may decrease when specialists keep the patient on regular inspection. Rehabilitation through alloplasty or prosthetic restoration provides satisfactory conditions in aesthetics and well-being and reinstates individuals in familial and social environment.

El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la presencia de burbujas superficiales y la alteracion dimensional en los modelos obtenidos de impresiones de alginato, con y sin alisamiento con el dedo humedecido en agua, Se hizo una matriz en resina acrilica del maxilar desdentado cuyo paladar se modifico para que presentara una superficie llana y lisa y se insertaron S pernos metalicos en la cresta del reborde en lugares predeterminados, El estudio se dividio en 6 grupos de acuerdo con la tecnica de impresion y del material usado Ueltrate, Jeltrate plus e Hidrogum), con un total de 10 modelos para cada grupo, El paladar de los modelos se valoro con lupa (SO aumentos) lo que permitio la estimacion de ias burbujas, La lectura de los modelos se hizo por digitalizacion de los modelos, midiendo la distancia entre los pernos con el software AutoCAD 2000, Los datos segun el analisis de la varianza (ANOV A) y el test de Tukey (S%) indicaron una reduccion significativa en el porcentaje de burbujas cuando se hacia el alisa miento, Los modelos donde se hizo el alisamiento presentara/' alteraciones sin diferencias estadistica mente significativas respecto a los grupos donde no se hizo el alisamiento, El analisis de los resultados permitio concluir que el alisa miento del alginato con el dedo humedecido no afecto la precision de los modelos del yeso en ningunos de los alginatos probados, El alisado dio lugar a una reduccion significativa en el numero de burbujas superficiales.

The accuracy of impressions that transfer the relationship of the implant to the metal framework of the prosthesis continues to be a problem. This study was designed to evaluate the accuracy of the transfer process under variable conditions with regard to implant analog angulations, impression materials, and techniques. Replicas (n = 60) of a metal matrix (control) containing four implants at 90 degrees , 80 degrees , 75 degrees , and 65 degrees in relation to the horizontal surface were obtained by using three impression techniques: T1-indirect technique with conical copings in closed trays; T2-direct technique with square copings in open trays; and T3-square copings splinted with autopolymerizing acrylic resin; and four elastomers: "P"-polysulfide; "I"-polyether; "A"-addition silicone; and "Z"-condensation silicone. The values of the implant analog angulations were assessed by a profilometer to the nearest 0.017 degrees , then submitted to analysis of variance for comparisons at significance of 5% (P.05). For implant analog at 90 degrees , the material "A" associated with T2 and material "Z" with T3 behaved differently (P.05) from all groups. At 80 degrees , all materials behaved differently (P.01) with T1. At 75 degrees , when T1 was associated, materials "P" and "A" showed similar behavior, as well as materials "I" and "Z"; however, "P" and "A" were different from "I" and "Z" (P.01). When T3 was associated, all experimental groups behaved differently among them (P.01). At 65 degrees , the materials "P" and "Z" behaved differently (P.01) from the control group with T1, T2, and T3; the materials "I" and "A" behaved differently from the control group (P.01) when T1 and T2, respectively, were associated. The more perpendicular the implant analog angulation is in relation to the horizontal surface, the more accurate the impression. The best materials were material "I" and "A" and the most satisfactory technique was technique 3.
