1. Purely two-dimensional vortex matter in infinite-layer nickelates

Abstract

Characterizing the dimensionality of the superconducting state in the infinite-layer (IL) nickelates is crucial to understand its nature. Most studies have addressed the problem by studying the anisotropy of the upper critical fields. Yet, the dominance of Pauli-paramagnetism effects over orbital ones makes it challenging to interpret the experiments in terms of dimensionality. Here we address the question from a different perspective, by investigating the vortex phase diagram in the mixed-state. We demonstrate that superconducting Pr0.8Sr0.2NiO2 thin films present a vortex liquid-to-glass transition of a purely two-dimensional nature. The obtained results suggest that bidimensionality is an intrinsic property, and that superconductivity resides in fully-decoupled NiO2 planes. In this scenario, the coherence length along the c-axis must be shorter than the distance between those planes, while Josephson and magnetostatic coupling between them must be negligible. We believe that these conclusions are relevant for theories on the origin of superconductivity in the IL-nickelates.

Abstract

The normal-state conductivity and superconducting critical temperature of oxygen-deficient YBa2Cu3O7-x can be persistently enhanced by illumination. Strongly debated for years, the origin of those effects -- termed persistent photoconductivity (PPC) and photosuperconductivity (PPS) -- has remained an unsolved critical problem, whose comprehension may provide key insights to harness the origin of high-temperature superconductivity itself. Here we make essential steps toward understanding PPS. While the models proposed so far assume that it is caused by a carrier-density increase (photodoping) observed concomitantly, our experiments contradict such conventional belief: we demonstrate that it is instead linked to a photo-induced decrease of the electronic scattering rate. Furthermore, we find that the latter effect and photodoping are completely disconnected and originate from different microscopic mechanisms since they present different wavelength and oxygen-content dependencies as well as strikingly different relaxation dynamics. Besides helping disentangle photodoping, PPC, and PPS, our results provide new evidence for the intimate relation between critical temperature and scattering rate, a key ingredient in modern theories on high-temperature superconductivity.

Abstract

Beyond a critical disorder, two-dimensional (2D) superconductors become insulating. In this Superconductor-Insulator Transition (SIT), the nature of the insulator is still controversial. Here, we present an extensive experimental study on insulating Nb_{x}Si_{1-x} close to the SIT, as well as corresponding numerical simulations of the electrical conductivity. At low temperatures, we show that electronic transport is activated and dominated by charging energies. The sample thickness variation results in a large spread of activation temperatures, fine-tuned via disorder. We show numerically and experimentally that the localization length varies exponentially with thickness. At the lowest temperatures, overactivated behavior is observed in the vicinity of the SIT and the increase in the activation energy can be attributed to the superconducting gap. We derive a relation between the increase in activation energy and the temperature below which overactivated behavior is observed. This relation is verified by many different quasi-2D systems.

Abstract

Recent experiments have shown that proximity with high-temperature superconductors induces unconventional superconducting correlations in graphene. Here we demonstrate that those correlations propagate hundreds of nanometer, allowing for the unique observation of $d$-wave Andreev pair interferences in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$-graphene devices that behave as a Fabry-P\'erot cavity. The interferences show as a series of pronounced conductance oscillations analogous to those originally predicted by de Gennes--Saint-James for conventional metal-superconductor junctions. Abstract

We report on non equilibrium field effect in insulating amorphous NbSi thin films having different Nb contents and thicknesses. The hallmark of an electron glass, namely the logarithmic growth of a memory dip in conductance versus gate voltage curves, is observed in all the films after a cooling from room temperature to 4.2 K. A very rich phenomenology is demonstrated. While the memory dip width is found to strongly vary with the film parameters, as was also observed in amorphous indium oxide films, screening lengths and temperature dependence of the dynamics are closer to what is observed in granular Al films. Our results demonstrate that the differentiation between continuous and discontinuous systems is not relevant to understand the discrepancies reported between various systems in the electron glass features. Abstract

Semiconductor nanowires such as InAs and InSb are promising materials for studying Majorana zero-modes and demonstrating non-Abelian particle exchange relevant for topological quantum computing. While evidence for Majorana bound states in nanowires has been shown, the majority of these experiments are marked by significant disorder. In particular, the interfacial inhomogeneity between the superconductor and nanowire is strongly believed to be the main culprit for disorder and the resulting soft superconducting gap ubiquitous in tunneling studies of hybrid semiconductor-superconductor systems. Additionally, a lack of ballistic transport in nanowire systems can create bound states that mimic Majorana signatures. We resolve these problems through the development of selective-area epitaxy of Al to InSb nanowires, a technique applicable to other nanowires and superconductors. Epitaxial InSb-Al devices generically possess a hard superconducting gap and demonstrate ballistic 1D superconductivity and near perfect transmission of supercurrents in the single mode regime, requisites for engineering and controlling 1D topological superconductivity. Additionally, we demonstrate that epitaxial InSb-Al superconducting island devices, the building blocks for Majorana based quantum computing applications, prepared using selective area epitaxy can achieve micron scale ballistic 1D transport. Our results pave the way for the development of networks of ballistic superconducting electronics for quantum device applications.

Abstract

We present the results of measurements demonstrating the efficiency of the EDELWEISS-III array of cryogenic germanium detectors for direct dark matter searches. The experimental setup and the FID (Fully Inter-Digitized) detector array is described, as well as the efficiency of the double measurement of heat and ionization signals in background rejection. For the whole set of 24 FID detectors used for coincidence studies, the baseline resolutions for the fiducial ionization energy are mainly below 0.7 keV$_{ee}$ (FHWM) whereas the baseline resolutions for heat energies are mainly below 1.5 keV$_{ee}$ (FWHM). The response to nuclear recoils as well as the very good discrimination capability of the FID design has been measured with an AmBe source. The surface $\beta$- and $\alpha$-decay rejection power of $R_{\rm surf} < 4 \times 10^{-5}$ per $\alpha$ at 90% C.L. has been determined with a $^{210}$Pb source, the rejection of bulk $\gamma$-ray events has been demonstrated using $\gamma$-calibrations with $^{133}$Ba sources leading to a value of $R_{\gamma{\rm -mis-fid}} < 2.5 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90% C.L.. The current levels of natural radioactivity measured in the detector array are shown as the rate of single $\gamma$ background. The fiducial volume fraction of the FID detectors has been measured to a weighted average value of $(74.6 \pm 0.4)\%$ using the cosmogenic activation of the $^{65}$Zn and $^{68,71}$Ge isotopes. The stability and uniformity of the detector response is also discussed. The achieved resolutions, thresholds and background levels of the upgraded EDELWEISS-III detectors in their setup are thus well suited to the direct search of WIMP dark matter over a large mass range.

Abstract

This paper reports on the development of a technology involving $^{100}$Mo-enriched scintillating bolometers, compatible with the goals of CUPID, a proposed next-generation bolometric experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Large mass ($\sim$1~kg), high optical quality, radiopure $^{100}$Mo-containing zinc and lithium molybdate crystals have been produced and used to develop high performance single detector modules based on 0.2--0.4~kg scintillating bolometers. In particular, the energy resolution of the lithium molybdate detectors near the $Q$-value of the double-beta transition of $^{100}$Mo (3034~keV) is 4--6~keV FWHM. The rejection of the $\alpha$-induced dominant background above 2.6~MeV is better than 8$\sigma$. Less than 10~$\mu$Bq/kg activity of $^{232}$Th ($^{228}$Th) and $^{226}$Ra in the crystals is ensured by boule recrystallization. The potential of $^{100}$Mo-enriched scintillating bolometers to perform high sensitivity double-beta decay searches has been demonstrated with only 10~kg$\times$d exposure: the two neutrino double-beta decay half-life of $^{100}$Mo has been measured with the up-to-date highest accuracy as $T_{1/2}$ = [6.90 $\pm$ 0.15(stat.) $\pm$ 0.37(syst.)] $\times$ 10$^{18}$~yr. Abstract

We present the results of a search for elastic scattering from galactic dark matter in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) in the 4-30 GeV/$c^2$ mass range. We make use of a 582 kg-day fiducial exposure from an array of 800 g Germanium bolometers equipped with a set of interleaved electrodes with full surface coverage. We searched specifically for $\sim 2.5-20$ keV nuclear recoils inside the detector fiducial volume. As an illustration the number of observed events in the search for 5 (resp. 20) GeV/$c^2$ WIMPs are 9 (resp. 4), compared to an expected background of 6.1 (resp. 1.4). A 90% CL limit of $4.3\times 10^{-40}$ cm$^2$ (resp. $9.4\times 10^{-44}$ cm$^2$) is set on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross-section for 5 (resp. 20) GeV/$c^2$ WIMPs. This result represents a 41-fold improvement with respect to the previous EDELWEISS-II low-mass WIMP search for 7 GeV/$c^2$ WIMPs. This paper reports on the development of a technology involving 100Mo -enriched scintillating bolometers, compatible with the goals of CUPID, a proposed next-generation bolometric experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Large mass ( ∼1kg ), high optical quality, radiopure 100Mo -containing zinc and lithium molybdate crystals have been produced and used to develop high performance single detector modules based on 0.2-0.4 kg scintillating bolometers. Abstract

The LUMINEU is designed to investigate the possibility to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{100}$Mo by means of a large array of scintillating bolometers based on ZnMoO$_4$ crystals enriched in $^{100}$Mo. High energy resolution and relatively fast detectors, which are able to measure both the light and the heat generated upon the interaction of a particle in a crystal, are very promising for the recognition and rejection of background events. We present the LUMINEU concepts and the experimental results achieved aboveground and underground with large-mass natural and enriched crystals. The measured energy resolution, the $\alpha/\beta$ discrimination power and the radioactive internal contamination are all within the specifications for the projected final LUMINEU sensitivity. Simulations and preliminary results confirm that the LUMINEU technology can reach zero background in the region of interest (around 3 MeV) with exposures of the order of hundreds kg$\times$years, setting the bases for a next generation $0\nu2\beta$ decay experiment capable to explore the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted as proceedings of the TAUP 2015 conference

Abstract

The technology of scintillating bolometers based on zinc molybdate (ZnMoO$_4$) crystals is under development within the LUMINEU project to search for 0$\nu$2$\beta$ decay of $^{100}$Mo with the goal to set the basis for large scale experiments capable to explore the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern. Advanced ZnMoO$_4$ crystal scintillators with mass of $\sim$~0.3 kg were developed and Zn$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystal from enriched $^{100}$Mo was produced for the first time by using the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique. One ZnMoO$_4$ scintillator and two samples (59 g and 63 g) cut from the enriched boule were tested aboveground at milli-Kelvin temperature as scintillating bolometers showing a high detection performance. Abstract

The normal-state conductivity and superconducting critical temperature of oxygen-deficient YBa2Cu3O7-delta can be persistently enhanced by illumination. Strongly debated for years, the origin of those effects-termed persistent photoconductivity and photosuperconductivity (PPS)-has remained an unsolved critical problem, whose comprehension may provide key insights to harness the origin of hightemperature superconductivity itself. Here, we make essential steps toward understanding PPS. While the models proposed so far assume that it is caused by a carrier-density increase (photodoping) observed concomitantly, our experiments contradict such conventional belief: we demonstrate that it is instead linked to a photo-induced decrease of the electronic scattering rate. Furthermore, we find that the latter effect and photodoping are completely disconnected and originate from different microscopic mechanisms, since they present different wavelength and oxygen-content dependences as well as strikingly different relaxation dynamics. Abstract

We present new constraints on the couplings of axions and more generic axion-like particles using data from the EDELWEISS-II experiment. The EDELWEISS experiment, located at the Underground Laboratory of Modane, primarily aims at the direct detection of WIMPs using germanium bolometers. It is also sensitive to the low-energy electron recoils that would be induced by solar or dark matter axions. Using a total exposure of up to 448 kg.d, we searched for axion-induced electron recoils down to 2.5 keV within four scenarios involving different hypotheses on the origin and couplings of axions. We set a 95% CL limit on the coupling to photons $g_{A\gamma}<2.13\times 10^{-9}$ GeV$^{-1}$ in a mass range not fully covered by axion helioscopes. We also constrain the coupling to electrons, $g_{Ae} < 2.56\times 10^{-11}$, similar to the more indirect solar neutrino bound. Finally we place a limit on $g_{Ae}\times g_{AN}^{\rm eff}<4.70 \times 10^{-17}$, where $g_{AN}^{\rm eff}$ is the effective axion-nucleon coupling for $^{57}$Fe. Combining these results we fully exclude the mass range $0.91\,{\rm eV}

Abstract

An extended Josephson junction consists of two superconducting electrodes that are separated by an insulator and it is therefore also a microwave cavity. The superconducting phase difference across the junction determines the supercurrent as well as its spatial distribution. Both, an external magnetic field and a resonant cavity intrafield produce a spatial modification of the superconducting phase along the junction. The interplay between these two effects leads to interference in the critical current of the junction and allows us to continuously tune the coupling strength between the first cavity mode and the Josephson phase from 1 to -0.5. This enables static and dynamic control over the junction in the ultra-strong coupling regime., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

High-TC cuprate superconductors' growth conditions and their incompatibility with some of the most standard nanofabrication approaches make their large-scale integration with 2D materials (such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, and other Van der Waals materials) much more difficult than for conventional, metallic superconductors. Here, we address this challenge and develop an approach based on pulsed laser deposition that allows the growth of the 2D semiconductor MoS2 on the archetypal high-TC superconductor YBa2Cu3O7−x. This yields functional heterostructures in which the individual constituents' properties are preserved and that show superconducting coupling across their interface. The developed approach paves the way for large-scale 2D semiconductor co-integration with high-TC superconductors toward the study and leverage of the superconducting proximity effect in hybrid devices. Abstract

Recent experiments have shown that proximity with high-temperature superconductors induces unconventional superconducting correlations in graphene. Here, we demonstrate that those correlations propagate hundreds of nanometers, allowing for the unique observation of d-wave Andreev-pair interferences in YBa2Cu3O7-graphene devices that behave as a Fabry-Perot cavity. The interferences show as a series of pronounced conductance oscillations analogous to those originally predicted by de Gennes–Saint-James for conventional metal-superconductor junctions. The present demonstration is pivotal to the study of exotic directional effects expected for nodal superconductivity in Dirac materials.

Abstract

We present new constraints on the couplings of axions and more generic axion-like particles using data from the EDELWEISS-II experiment. The EDELWEISS experiment, located at the Underground Laboratory of Modane, primarily aims at the direct detection of WIMPs using germanium bolometers. It is also sensitive to the low-energy electron recoils that would be induced by solar or dark matter axions. Using a total exposure of up to 448 kg.d, we searched for axion-induced electron recoils down to 2.5 keV within four scenarios involving different hypotheses on the origin and couplings of axions. We set a 95% CL limit on the coupling to photons $g_{A\gamma}

Abstract

The technology of scintillating bolometers based on zinc molybdate (ZnMoO4) crystals is under development within the LUMINEU project to search for decay of 100Mo with the goal to set the basis for large scale experiments capable to explore the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern. Advanced ZnMoO4 crystal scintillators with mass of ∼0.3 kg were developed and Zn100MoO4 crystal from enriched 100Mo was produced for the first time by using the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique. One ZnMoO4 scintillator and two samples (59 g and 63 g) cut from the enriched boule were tested aboveground at milli-Kelvin temperature as scintillating bolometers showing a high detection performance. The first results of the low background measurements with three ZnMoO4 and two enriched detectors installed in the EDELWEISS set-up at the Modane Underground Laboratory (France) are presented.

Abstract

The LUMINEU is designed to investigate the possibility to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{100}$Mo by means of a large array of scintillating bolometers based on ZnMoO$_4$ crystals enriched in $^{100}$Mo. High energy resolution and relatively fast detectors, which are able to measure both the light and the heat generated upon the interaction of a particle in a crystal, are very promising for the recognition and rejection of background events. We present the LUMINEU concepts and the experimental results achieved aboveground and underground with large-mass natural and enriched crystals. The measured energy resolution, the $\alpha/\beta$ discrimination power and the radioactive internal contamination are all within the specifications for the projected final LUMINEU sensitivity. Simulations and preliminary results confirm that the LUMINEU technology can reach zero background in the region of interest (around 3 MeV) with exposures of the order of hundreds kg$\times$years, setting the bases for a next generation $0\nu2\beta$ decay experiment capable to explore the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted as proceedings of the TAUP 2015 conference

Abstract

The technology of scintillating bolometers based on zinc molybdate (ZnMoO$_4$) crystals is under development within the LUMINEU project to search for 0$\nu$2$\beta$ decay of $^{100}$Mo with the goal to set the basis for large scale experiments capable to explore the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern. Advanced ZnMoO$_4$ crystal scintillators with mass of $\sim$~0.3 kg were developed and Zn$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystal from enriched $^{100}$Mo was produced for the first time by using the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique. One ZnMoO$_4$ scintillator and two samples (59 g and 63 g) cut from the enriched boule were tested aboveground at milli-Kelvin temperature as scintillating bolometers showing a high detection performance. Abstract

The LUMTNEU program aims at performing a pilot experiment on 0ν2β decay of 100Mo using radiopure ZnMoO4 crystals enriched in 100Mo operated as cryogenic scintillating bolometers. Large volume ZnMoO4 crystal scintillators (~0.3 kg) were developed and tested showing high performance in terms of radiopurity, energy resolution and α/β particle discrimination capability. Zinc molybdate crystal scintillators enriched in 100 Mo were grown for the first time by the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique with a high crystal yield and an acceptable level of enriched molybdenum irrecoverable losses. A background level of ~ 0.5 counts/(yr keV ton) in the region of interest can be reached in a large detector array thanks to the excellent detectors radiopurity and particle discrimination capability, suppression of randomly coinciding events by pulse-shape analysis, and anticoincidence cut. These results pave the way to future sensitive searches based on the LUMTNEU technology, capable of approachingand exploring the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern. Abstract

International audience; The LUMINEU (Luminescent Underground Molybdenum Investigation for NEUtrino mass and nature) project envisages a high-sensitivity search for neutrinoless double beta (0 nu 2 beta) decay of Mo-100 with the help of scintillating bolometers based on zinc molybdate (ZnMoO4) crystals. One of the crucial points for the successful performance of this experiment is the development of a protocol for producing high quality large mass ZnMoO4 crystal scintillators with extremely high internal radiopurity. Here we report a significant progress in the development of large volume ZnMoO4 crystalline boules (with mass up to 1 kg) from deeply purified materials. We present and discuss the results achieved with two ZnMoO4 samples (with mass of about 0.3 kg each): one is a precursor of the LUMINEU project, while the other one was produced in the framework of LUMINEU with an improved purification / crystallization procedure. The two crystals were measured deep underground as scintillating bolometers in the EDELWEISS dilution refrigerator at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France) protected by a rock overburden corresponding to 4800 m w.e. The results indicate that both tested crystals are highly radiopure. However, the advanced LUMINEU sample shows a clear improvement with respect to the precursor, exhibiting only a trace internal contamination related with Po-210 at the level of 1 mBq/kg, while the activity of Ra-226 and Th-228 is below 0.005 mBq/kg. This demonstrates that the LUMINEU purification and crystal-growth procedures are very efficient and leads to radiopurity levels which exceedingly satisfy not only the LUMINEU goals but also the requirements of a next-generation 0 nu 2 beta experiment.

Abstract

Memristors, a cornerstone for neuromorphic electronics, respond to the history of electrical stimuli by varying their electrical resistance across a continuum of states. Much effort has been recently devoted to developing an analogous response to optical excitation. Here we realize a novel tunnelling photo-memristor whose behaviour is bimodal: its resistance is determined by the dual electrical-optical history. This is obtained in a device of ultimate simplicity: an interface between a high-temperature superconductor and a transparent semiconductor. The exploited mechanism is a reversible nanoscale redox reaction between both materials, whose oxygen content determines the electron tunnelling rate across their interface. The redox reaction is optically driven via an interplay between electrochemistry, photovoltaic effects and photo-assisted ion migration. Besides their fundamental interest, the unveiled electro-optic memory effects have considerable technological potential. Especially in combination with high-temperature superconductivity which, in addition to facilitating low-dissipation connectivity, brings photo-memristive effects to the realm of superconducting electronics., (© 2023. Abstract

Resistive switching effects offer new opportunities in the field of conventional memories as well as in the booming area of neuromorphic computing. Here the authors demonstrate memristive switching effects produced by a redox-driven oxygen exchange in tunnel junctions based on NdNiO 3 , a strongly correlated electron system characterized by the presence of a metal-to-insulator transition (MIT). Strikingly, a strong interplay exists between the MIT and the redox mechanism, which on the one hand modifies the MIT itself, and on the other hand radically affects the tunnel resistance switching and the resistance states' lifetime. That results in a very unique temperature behavior and endows the junctions with multiple degrees of freedom. The obtained results bring up fundamental questions on the interplay between electronic correlations and the creation and mobility of oxygen vacancies in nickelates, opening a new avenue toward mimicking neuromorphic functions by exploiting the electric-field control of correlated states., (© 2022 The Authors. Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of trabodenoson, a highly selective adenosine mimetic targeting the adenosine A 1 receptor., Methods: In Part 1, 60 healthy adult volunteers were randomized to 14 days of twice-daily topical monocular application of placebo or trabodenoson (200, 400, 800, 1,600, 2,400, or 3,200 μg). In Part 2, 10 subjects were randomized to placebo or 8 escalating doses of bilateral trabodenoson (total daily doses: 1,800-6,400 μg)., Results: The incidence of treatment-related adverse events in Part 1 was similar in the trabodenoson (27.8%) and placebo (25.0%) groups. Most were mild in intensity. The most common adverse events (AEs) for trabodenoson and placebo were headache (25.0% vs. 33%, respectively) and eye pain (11.1% vs. 4.2%, respectively). Ocular AEs were infrequent (16.7% and 17.9%, respectively), were self-limited, lasted <24 h, and were typically mild in intensity. The most common ocular AE was eye pain (9.5% and 3.6%, respectively), with a single observation of ocular hyperemia (200 μg trabodenoson). Trabodenoson was rapidly absorbed [median time to maximum concentration (t max ): ∼0.08 to 0.27 h] and eliminated (t ½ : 0.48-2.0 h), with no evidence of drug accumulation. Systemic exposure to topical trabodenoson was dose related but not dose proportional, with a plateau effect at doses ≥2,400 mg per eye. Abstract

To assess the possible role of variables not related to early infarct artery reperfusion in predicting late changes in ventricular function after infarction, paired early (mean 6.6 +/- 3.5 days after admission) and late (12.7 +/- 7.0 months later) cross-sectional echocardiograms from 54 infarction survivors were retrospectively reviewed. Ejection fraction was calculated from digitized biapical echocardiographic views on a graphics tablet. Changes of 0.10 or more in LVEF were correlated with 23 clinical variables. By stepwise regression analysis, Q-wave infarction and low early LVEF independently predicted late improvement in function. Early high LVEF and interval infarction were the only independent predictors of late declines in function. Overall, when patients were indexed by early left ventricular systolic function, a pronounced late "regression to the mean" was noted with initially high values tending to fall and low values to rise (r = -0.44, p less than 0.001). This effect must be accounted for in any acute intervention trial in myocardial infarction. The occurrence of Q-wave infarction does not exclude late improvement in ventricular function.

Abstract

Non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema has not been previously described in calcium channel blocker overdose. We describe a case of non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema occurring during the course of therapy for massive diltiazem overdose in a young patient with anorexia nervosa. Review of the current literature suggests that major and minor pulmonary complications occur with some frequency in the setting of calcium channel blocker overdose although their exact incidence remains unclear.
