This edited book focuses on the interconnections of STEM and Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) in higher education and offers novel approaches to reintegrating them. This book explores how the Humanities can play an essential services role in addressing global challenges such as the Covid pandemic. In arguing for their contribution alongside that of the Health Sciences, it calls for a new critical engagement – honest and self-reflective – from Humanities scholars with the question of how to overcome a fundamental challenge facing universities globally: finding a common language and set of ‘cultural'assumptions between disciplines as the basis for communication. The Humanities, the Social Sciences and the University is an intellectual history of research in the humanities and social sciences. It scrutinizes the priorities, values, objectives and publishing agendas of the modern university in order to assess the institutional pressures on research in major disciplines such as literature, history, sociology and economics. It argues that all these disciplines are currently experiencing a deep malaise – though to different degrees – due to loss of faith in the Enlightenment project, which entailed the pursuit of knowledge through reason. The Chicago critics, a group of academics that gathered around Ronald S. Crane in the early 1930s, tackled questions that are still relevant today: What is more important — humanistic general education or vocational specialisation? How should a university define its function in the context of an industrial, technological and pluralistic democratic society? What kind of knowledge can the humanities contribute to the development of the individual and to society as a whole? While the Chicago critics'conceptual apparatus is modelled on Aristotle's Poetics, it is significant that their formal literary analysis appears within the context of a defence of the humanities as (humanistic) disciplines or the (liberal) arts which aim at ethical as well as aesthetic education, thus forming value standards that help individuals to find orientation.

This book examines inclusion teaching at the college and university level. Knowledge production in academia today is burgeoning and increasingly interdisciplinary in nature. Research within the humanities is no exception: it is distributed across a variety of methodic styles of research and increasingly involves interactions with fields outside the narrow confines of the university. As a result, the notion of liberal arts and humanities within Western universities is undergoing profound transformations. In Mapping Frontier Research in the Humanities, the contributors explore this transformative process. What are the implications, both for the modes of research and for the organisation of the humanities and higher education?The volume explores the intra- and extra-academic engagement of humanities researchers, their styles of research, and exemplifies their interdisciplinary character. The humanities are shaping debates about culture and identity, but how? Has neuroscience changed the humanities? What do they tell us about'hypes'and economic'bubbles'? What is their international agenda? The domination of single subjects in academic programmes and institutions has recently been called into question. Literary studies are currently opening themselves up to the epistemological renewal that other fields can offer. They are increasingly borrowing theoretical tools from other subjects in order to analyse the historical, socio-political and institutional conditions of the production of literary texts, to identify the general discursive circumstances in which they emerge, and to study the relationship between literature and other media. Similarly, while subjects such as sociology, history, and political science have always been closely related – if not literally spinoffs from one another, as in the case of sociology vis-à-vis anthropology – what becomes of their specificities when they borrow from geography to address space-related issues, from psychology to understand social actors'individual motivations, or from literary studies to make sense of individual or collective narratives? The present volume accounts for experiments in research that overstep disciplinary boundaries by analysing the new fields and methodologies emerging in the contemporary globalised academic environment, which puts a strong premium on synergism and linkages. Moreover, it assesses current theoretical reflections on inter-, multi- and transdisciplinarity, as well as research grounded in it, and measures their impact on the evolution of scholarship and curriculum in the fields of literature, language and humanities.
