Although many people experience a close and complex relationship with their companion animals, our understanding and measurement of this relationship has lagged far behind that of human-human relationships. Important advances in human-human relationship concepts and measurement have yet to be applied in the context of human-companion animal relationships, including the critically relevant concept of self-expansion (i.e. the process through which positive content is added to the self). The aim of this research was to develop and validate a new full and short-form measure of self-expansion within the human-companion animal relationship, the Companion Animals Self-Expansion Scale (CASES). The sample included in the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) phase consisted of 366 adult English-speaking companion animal owners, while the sample included in the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) phase consisted of 368 adult English-speaking companion animal owners. All participants completed demographic questions and the CASES. Analyses revealed the full version of the CASES to be 15 items, six of which were retained for the short form of the scale based on their consistently high-factor loadings and theoretically relevant content. The CASES, as well as its short form, the CASES-SF, are both reliable and valid in measuring self-expansion within the human-companion animal relationship.

Animal-assisted psychotherapy (AAP), a subspeciality of animal-assisted therapy (AAT), is a relatively new and innovative treatment modality currently provided to all age groups with various mental and behavioral health issues in different clinical settings. As AAP has become more popular, there is a need to evaluate the use of this approach in therapeutic settings. This study assessed AAP in treating adults with depressive symptoms using a modified version of the Patient Questionnaire Depression Module (mPHQ-9). Secondary data were obtained from a therapy site specializing in AAP in the Denver Metro region of the United States from January 2015 to February 2021. Adult participants 18 years and older were assessed at intake and the approximately 6-month treatment mark. A paired-sample t-test found that AAP resulted in a statistically significant decrease in depressive symptomology, with modified PHQ-9 (mPHQ-9) scores from Intake to Time 2 (t(50) = 6.56, p < 0.001). The importance of animals in the participants’ decision to seek therapy also significantly influenced the change in depressive symptoms. The total variance explained by the importance of animals pre-treatment on depressive symptoms for adults with AAP was 8.1%, F (168.69, 1926.14) = 4.29, p = 0.044; moderate effect size (η2 = 0.46) was found. Clinical implications include the function of AAP, which requires a more accurate operational definition and a manualized AAP treatment protocol. AAP is a progressively growing intervention and a promising complementary modality to traditional therapeutic methods for adults with depressive symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosed in about 10% of children in the United States, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by symptoms including inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Traditional interventions, such as pharmacological and psychological interventions, are often used in conjunction with integrative health options, such as animal-assisted interventions. The objective of this manuscript is to report behavior coding findings from a randomized control trial of children with ADHD. METHODS: As part of a larger randomized control trial focused on the efficacy of combining a canine-assisted intervention (live therapy dog or control stuffed dog) with cognitive behavioral therapy for children with ADHD, the current manuscript focuses on video-captured behavior observations (n = 35 children, approximately 322 minutes of data). Data were extracted and coded using the Observation of Human-Animal Interaction Research (OHAIRE) Coding System. Behavior codes are reported as summary scores for the following domains: animal social interaction and human social interaction (further separated into human-adult social interaction and human-peer social interaction). Repeated measures mixed models analyses were performed using SAS PROC GLIMMIX to evaluate group differences and change across the study period. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in how much children interacted with the live therapy dogs versus control stuffed dogs. With respect to human-to-human social interactions, children showed greater increases over time in human-directed social interactions in the presence of live therapy dogs compared to stuffed dogs (p = .020). Over the course of the 12-week intervention, children increased in interactions with both adults (p = .006) and their peers (p = .014); however, there were more increases over time in adult-directed social interactions in the live animal condition compared to the control stuffed animal condition (p < 0.0001). DISCUSSION & CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest changes in social interaction when participating in this canine-assisted intervention, specifically greater increases in human-to-human social interactions over time when a live therapy dog is present compared to a control stuffed dog. Children appear to engage relatively equally with both live and stuffed dogs; however, the impact of animals on human socialization differs based on if a live animal is present. Future studies should consider incorporating behavior coding analysis into studies of canine-assisted interventions to identify how human-animal interactions may be moderators or mechanisms for psychosocial outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 lockdowns, shelter in place, closures of transportation and mental health services, and dearth of mental health providers created new barriers to obtaining support for mental health needs at a time of increased rates of anxiety and depression. During the pandemic, a record number of households owned and adopted pets, opening a potential avenue to investigate the relationship between pets and mental health. This systematic literature review examined the question: What is the evidence for a relationship between human-animal interaction and/or animal ownership and common mental disorders among adults who interacted with pets compared to adults who did not during the COVID-19 pandemic? METHODS: To address this question, four databases were searched: Medline, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and SCOPUS for peer-reviewed literature published between 2020 and July 2023. Of the 1,746 articles identified by the searches, 21 studies were included in this review. RESULTS: Results suggest that there exists a relationship between animal ownership and strong pet attachment and pet interaction, though the directionality of the relationship was not investigated by the included studies. There was an association between having a stronger relationship with a pet and lower feelings of depression and other mental health symptoms. There was also evidence of an association between anxiety and higher levels of animal attachment. CONCLUSION: Understanding the association between human-animal interaction and common mental disorders may be helpful to clinicians assessing the mental health of clients. Clinicians may glean additional insight about stressors, risk factors, social supports, and lifestyle of clients based on the clients status as a pet owner. Future research could further explore the direction of the causal relationship of human-animal interaction and/or animal ownership on common mental disorders; this could further inform how the HAI relationship can be used to support clients with mental health struggles.

Simple Summary: Broiler chickens in intensive production systems are often kept in environments with low sensory input, which can negatively impact their welfare. This study investigated the effects of physical and social enrichments. We examined how these strategies influenced the chickens' behavior, physiological responses, overall welfare, and growth parameters. Both types of enrichment improved their welfare, but social enrichment was particularly effective in encouraging foraging behavior and seemed to promote a more positive affective state. It is noteworthy that these welfare improvements maintained both growth and productivity, as no differences were observed in the productive parameters. These results suggest that incorporating social interactions into poultry farming practices can enhance animal welfare and maintain the production efficiency, offering a practical approach to improving the conditions in intensive farming systems. Environmental enrichment is key for improving the broiler welfare in intensive production systems. This study lasted for 43 days and evaluated the effects of physical and social enrichment on broiler welfare. A total of 96 one-day-old male broilers were divided into two treatments: control treatment, provided with physical enrichment (n = 48) including perches, platforms, and straw bales; and social treatment (n = 48), involving regular positive interactions with a human. The behavioral repertoire, footpad health, taste preferences for sweet and umami compounds, affective states (through tonic immobility and attention bias tests), and growth performance were evaluated. No effects were found for feeding, drinking, locomotion, lying, or standing behaviors, although differences were observed at specific time points: the Social group had more feeding time on day 21 (p = 0.046), while physical treatment showed reductions on days 28 and 35 (p < 0.001). The Social group showed increased drinking on day 42 (p < 0.001), reduced locomotion (p = 0.022), and increased lying (p = 0.046) on day 42. Foraging was higher in the Social group (p = 0.027), but preening showed no differences. Footpad lesions showed no significant differences. The Control group preferred sucrose 100 mM (p = 0.022), but no preference for MSG 300 mM was observed. With regard to tonic immobility, the Control group showed a tendency towards larger durations (p = 0.078), indicating a potential increase in fearfulness. In the attention bias test, although the freezing behavior increased, the latency to begin feeding was shorter in the Social group (p < 0.001), suggesting an improved affective state. Lastly, no significant differences were observed for any of the growth parameters, including average daily feed intake, average daily gain, feed conversion ratio, or final body weight, indicating that the Social group maintained productivity. Consistent individual behavioral differences (CIDs) among livestock are known to be inherent qualities of the animal that are repeatable over time and across contexts and can be related to production. Shepherds rely on qualities of the ewe to promote lamb health, survival, and performance, and selecting ewes based on desirable phenotypes may be one way to benefit lamb outcome. Previous research indicates that traits observed among breeding ewes in restrained contexts during human-animal interactions (HAIs) may have a greater association with maternal care and lamb outcome than responses in an open testing environment. The current study investigated the relationship between several behaviors in multiparous ewes (n = 42) in two distinct contexts: 1) human-animal interactions, with no lamb present, during post-breeding, gestation, and weaning, which were performed three times per year for 2 years (six trials in total), and 2) HAIs, with the lamb present, after parturition once per year for 2 years (two trials in total). Tests without the lamb present included a Human Contact, Presence, and Approach test within each of the six trials, and tests with the lamb present included a Lamb Handling and Tie Down test. General additive models with a random term for individual were used to investigate the relationship between behaviors from outside of the lambing season to behaviors within the lambing season. The proportion of time in the 'peripheral zone' in the Human Presence test, at post-breeding, was a significant negative predictor of 'environmental vigilance' (i.e., being on look-out rather than attending to lamb) in the Lamb Tie Down test (P=0.02). A post-hoc negative relationship was found between 'environmental vigilance' and 'sniffing/grooming' the lamb in the Lamb Tie Down test. In addition, sheep who were more environmentally vigilant in the Lamb Tie Down test were less avoidant of the human in the Human Presence test (post-breeding). Weaning weights, yet not birth weights, were highly repeatable within ewes [R=0.70, P =0.001, CI(0.29, 0.91)], and weaning weight models were improved with the inclusion of time in the 'peripheral zone' in the Human Presence test and grooming and 'environmental vigilance' in the Lamb Tie Down test. Of note, the avoidance of the human, when the lamb was not present, was associated with weaning weights and therefore could be considered as a metric to consider when selecting ewes. This article describes course-based projects in a Masters of Social Work class designed to explore the importance of environmental issues on the interactions between humans and animals. Three service-learning projects were implemented within a community "EarthFest" event to promote increased awareness of sustainability and actions to protect the environment while enhancing both welfare of animals and health and human well-being. Therapy and robotic animals were integrated into the projects to provide direct, hands-on benefits and interaction for participants. These projects reinforced social work values of service and social justice while developing student's skills in creating and facilitating an animal-assisted activity focused on sustainability. Simple Summary: There is evidence to suggest that the strength of the social attachment that forms between a human and their pet dog is important for maximizing the therapeutic outcomes of pet dog ownership, more so than the presence of a dog alone. Here, we review the literature to determine whether this evidence is supported specifically in children with pet dogs. We discuss the benefits to child health and well-being that are associated with pet dog ownership, the neural and endocrinological mechanisms that may support these intra-species attachments, and the importance of taking a dyadic approach to the study of this topic in the future. An increasing body of evidence indicates that owning a pet dog is associated with improvements in child health and well-being. Importantly, the degree of the social bond between child and dog may mediate the beneficial outcomes of dog ownership. The formation of social bonds is an intrinsically dyadic, interactive process where each interactor's behavior influences the other's behavior. For this reason, it is critical to evaluate the biological mechanisms of attachment in both children and their pet dogs as a socially bonded pair. Here, we review the physical, mental, and emotional outcomes that are associated with pet dog ownership or interaction in children. We then discuss the evidence that suggests that the strength of a social bond between a child and their pet dog matters for maximizing the beneficial outcomes associated with pet dog ownership, such as possible stress-buffering effects. We review the existing literature on the neural and endocrinological mechanisms of social attachment for inter-species social bonds that form between human children and dogs, situating this emerging knowledge within the context of the mechanisms of intra-species bonds in mammals. For decades, psychologists have explored dynamics within the realm of human‐animal interaction. Organizational psychologists are no different; research has found that exchanges with pets and other animals have the potential to influence important work outcomes, such as performance, well‐being, and satisfaction. Relatively little is understood, however, regarding the potential spillover effects of human‐animal interaction from the non‐work to work context. To address this gap in the literature, the present research—synthesising Broaden and Build Theory and Conservation of Resources Theory—explores the daily spillover effects of morning quality time with pets on affective, behavioural, and cognitive outcomes for employees, both during and after the workday. It is also suggested that openness to experience may act as a cross‐level moderator for these daily relationships. An occupationally heterogenous daily diary sample of employed pet owners from the United Kingdom (NLevel 1 = 405, NLevel 2 = 81) was used to test these relationships. Using a mixed effects modelling approach, it was revealed that morning quality time with pets was associated with reduced Negative Affect (NA) during the workday, and reduced incivility and withdrawal upon returning home from work. Moreover, higher levels of trait openness to experience strengthened the negative relationships between daily morning quality time with pets and daily workday NA and afterwork incivility. Across the world, more and more cats are being kept in captive spaces such as homes, animal shelters, and cat cafés. There is a growing need to understand whether cross-cultural differences influence human–animal interactions in these human-controlled environments. Cats are one of the world's most popular companion animals, and both the US and Japan have high rates of cat ownership. However, cultural differences may account for differences in how people feel about cats and how humans and cats behave toward one another. The research aim was to examine whether differences exist between the US and Japan across multiple facets of the human–cat relationship. Study 1 examined each country's attitude toward pet cats. Results indicate US citizens have significantly more positive attitudes toward pet cats than Japanese citizens. Study 2 examined owner attachment to their cat and pet cat social behavior. Results indicate owners in both countries were highly attached to their cats. In the US, but not Japan, owner attachment level predicted pet cat sociability toward the owner. Study 3 examined cat social behavior in cat cafés. The results of studies 2 and 3 indicate that pet cats and café cats in the US spend a greater proportion of time in proximity to people compared with pet and café cats in Japan. In all, differences and similarities were seen between the US and Japan. In humans, differences in childhood cat experiences and lower rates of cat ownership may impact attitudes toward cats. In pet cats, owner characteristics, the size of the cat's environment, cat care practices, and attitudes toward cats may impact cat social behavior. Separation from their owner is stressful for some dogs. Studies examining this phenomenon are usually carried out in novel places. However, given that separation distress can also impact the behavior and welfare of dogs in their home environment, it is critical to study them in this context as well. Our first aim was to evaluate the reactions of dogs to a brief separation from their owner in the home. Secondly, we aimed to examine differences in the reactions of dogs classified as fearful, without (n = 27) and with (n = 17) aggressive responses, as well as controls (n = 28). All dogs were adults, from various breeds and mixes, and lived as pets. Each dog's behavior was evaluated across three phases: (1) 2 min interaction with owner (baseline), (2) 3 min separation from the owner (alone), and (3) 2 min after the owner returned (owner return). We measured exploration as well as affiliative and stress behaviors. The results show that dogs explored the environment more in phase 1, directed more behaviors toward the door through which the owner had left in phase 2, followed the owner leaving at the end of phase 2, and greeted them when they returned in phase 3. Dogs also spent more time near the owner after their absence in phase 3 than in phase 1. A decrease in exploration triggered by the absence of the owner in phase 2 and a lack of full exploration recovery in phase 3 were observed as possible indicators of stress. No differences were found between fearful dogs and controls. The results indicate that it is possible to evaluate dogs' reactions to separation from their owner in a more naturalistic context. When the emotional support provided by a person's animal helps to mitigate an aspect of a disability, that person has a right to have their animal, typically referred to as an emotional support animal (ESA), within their housing as a disability accommodation under the Fair Housing Act (FHA) in the United States. Health and mental health care professionals (henceforth referred to as "health-care professionals") are considered a reliable source for verification of eligibility for ESAs as a disability accommodation, and guidelines have emerged within and across professions to help guide assessment and documentation. These guidelines are published in the form of peer-reviewed journal articles and position statements from professional groups, such as primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, psychologists, counselors, social workers, and psychiatrists. We used scoping review methods to identify guidelines across psychiatry, medicine, nursing, counseling psychology, and social work, then analyzed the guidelines using a competency-focused framework. and compared them to the legal requirements of ESA documentation. Guidelines often reflected the values underlying the profession, but agreement was generally seen in most areas of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Recommendations for integrative best practice guidelines, across professions, are proposed along with specific recommendations for writing ESA letters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This exploratory study assessed the role of message framing for predicting future intentions to reduce meat consumption. Participants (n = 376) completed a questionnaire assessing eating habits and personal attachment to meat. Individuals were then randomly exposed to four separate framing conditions. Operationalized as Public Service Announcement-style advertisements, participants were informed of the inhumane conditions of the meat and dairy industry. These advertisements were tailored to examine the role of perceived gains (benefits of meat reduction) or losses (consequences of meat consumption) in one's moral character. In addition to framing effects, variables such as gender and meat attachment were included to predict future meat reduction intentions. An analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) indicated that meat attachment reduced intentions to curb meat consumption. Controlling for meat attachment, main effects were present for framing condition. Gender and gain frames interacted to positively predict dietary intentions following message exposure. Women exposed to gain frames were more likely than men to report intentions to reduce meat intake in favor of plant-based options. However, no gender difference was present for participants exposed to loss frames, which had no effect on eating intentions regardless of gender. The discussion highlights the role of both gender and meat-eating identity coupled with situational factors (i.e., message frames) for reducing meat intake. Such insights offer opportunities for key stakeholders, such as policymakers and animal welfare advocates, to leverage these effects for dietary change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Prior research has identified a relationship between animal abuse and intimate partner violence (IPV). However, there is a gap in the literature regarding the relationship between IPV and type of animal abused. From a sample of 851 participants, this study explored, using unadjusted odds ratios, the bivariate relationships between types of IPV victimization (e.g., psychological, physical, and severe IPV) and partners' abuse of cats, dogs, small pets, and horses. The strongest association was between the partner's abuse of cats and severe IPV victimization. The partner's cat abuse was associated with a 1,232% increase in the likelihood of severe IPV for women and a 945% increase for men. Cat abuse and dog abuse were significantly associated with all types of IPV, abuse of small pets was associated with physical and severe IPV, and horse abuse was not significantly related to IPV. Additionally, this study examined the relationship between types of animal abuse (e.g., neglect, emotional abuse, threats, physical abuse, and severe physical abuse) for cats and dogs and IPV. Cat neglect was most strongly associated with severe IPV and increased the likelihood of it by approximately 3,700%. Dog neglect increased the likelihood of severe IPV by approximately 1,600%. Results from the study indicate that there are differences between type of animal abused in relationship to IPV and highlights the need for future research to examine types of animal abuse separately. Working dogs play integral roles across many human workplaces. This is no exception in the criminal justice system, and policing more specifically, where police dogs are used in various capacities. Many questions remain, however, regarding the public's perceptions of dogs in different working contexts. Drawing upon data from a sample of Canadian and American adults (n = 201) obtained via Amazon's Mechanical Turk, the present research explores public perceptions of working dogs' utilities, with an emphasis on police dogs. The findings reveal that while participants overwhelmingly supported working dogs in health and wellbeing contexts, they expressed more mixed perceptions regarding police dogs. The findings also reveal that police dogs' utilities are related to participants' overall support for police dogs, but that the specific relationship varies as a function of the utility. Amidst growing concerns regarding the use of police dogs, these findings may help police organizations incorporate evidence-based decision-making related to the deployment of police dogs moving forward. The US Supreme Court recently debated and upheld a significant piece of farmed animal welfare legislation, Proposition 12, which was broadly supported by Californian voters. The goal of this study was to determine how individual differences in personality are related to attitudes about this legislation. We examined how ten lower-order aspects of the Big Five personality traits were related to Proposition 12 in an American sample (n = 802). The Openness aspect of Openness to Experience, the Withdrawal aspect of Neuroticism, and trait domain Agreeableness were consistently related to support for Proposition 12. Effects were not moderated by political orientation, region, gender, or age. Our results show that personality traits are not only an important factor in general political attitudes about animal welfare, but that they can predict people's attitudes about particular pieces of animal welfare legislation. Research has reported on positive aspects of pet guardianship to reduce physical and mental health issues in older adults (over the age of 65 years). There is, however, a need to be cognizant of the risks that pertain to companion animal guardianship. The aim of this scoping review was to systematically identify literature regarding the risks that companion animal guardianship may pose to older adults to facilitate greater understanding and inclusion of pets in the lives of older adults. Using online databases (Scopus, ProQuest, and Google Scholar), systematic searches were conducted. From 11,868 articles, 26 were included in the final data synthesis. The type of risk reported was categorized into three groups (zoonotic, physical, and psychological), with the worst outcomes reported being fatal, potentially fatal, and severe, respectively. Very little literature for pet species other than dogs and cats were identified. Whilst further research is required to fully quantify the risks that arise from the cohabitation of pets and older adults, there is enough evidence for older adults to be safely engaging with pets and hence continue to benefit from the human–animal bond. Animal shelter workers are at risk of poor wellbeing resulting from their work, with this potentially impacting employee performance and attrition. Using the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model as a theoretical framework, the study explored relationships between job demands, job resources, workplace wellbeing (exhaustion and engagement), performance, and intentions to leave. Use of job-crafting behaviors, and the extent that these behaviors predict wellbeing after controlling for the impact of job demands and resources, were also explored. Among the 142 participants surveyed, a range of job-crafting behaviors were reported. Consistent with the JD-R model, hierarchical regressions revealed job demands and resources accounted for 36.4% of the variance in work engagement and 36.2% of the variance in exhaustion. Job crafting predicted wellbeing in animal shelter workers after controlling for demands and resources and explained an additional 7.8% of the variance in work engagement and 5.9% of the variance in exhaustion. Work engagement, but not exhaustion, was related to performance, while both engagement and exhaustion were related to intentions to leave. The results suggest that job demands and resources impact wellbeing in animal shelter workers, affecting their performance and contributing to intentions to leave. Broad workplace interventions that build resources and minimize demands may, therefore, be effective in promoting wellbeing and performance in animal-shelter environments, which could potentially increase retention rates. Animal shelter workers make active adjustments to their work environment through job crafting, and these are linked to workplace wellbeing. Interventions that offer flexibility and encourage job crafting, particularly those that involve finding opportunities for growth and seeking feedback on performance, offer a useful bottom-up approach to complement top-down interventions. Drawing on data from a project examining experiences of accessing support for pets from the UK animal welfare charity Blue Cross, this paper illuminates the impact of financial hardship on pet owners. Twenty service users (15 female, 5 male, aged 29–67 years) took part in individual online semi-structured interviews. Sixteen were receiving free or reduced-cost veterinary care (eligibility is based on certain means-tested benefits and catchment area). Participants were encouraged to talk about their experiences with Blue Cross, with a set of key questions capturing the chronology of events employed as a guide. All participants (even when relatively financially secure) alluded to the expense of having a pet and the rising cost of all aspects of care. The majority had struggled financially in recent years due to changes in circumstances (reduced income or had to stop working due to illness, injury, or carer responsibilities). Others had been on a low income for the long term. Seeking support was often the result of a health issue or emergency with a pet, when unanticipated veterinary costs (operations, transporting animal, scans, treatment) were simply unaffordable. People were faced with the heart-wrenching dilemma of what to do to help their pet, describing these times as the most stressful in their lives, and with most only becoming aware of charitable support for pets via word-of-mouth. Two of our participants' stories show how when you have limited financial resources, serious health problems, or complicated circumstances, life can spiral out of control and lead to difficult situations with pets. However, it also highlights how resilience and strategies are established in this process, mitigating to some extent the impact of future crises. We highlight the full range of issues experienced as a result of economic vulnerability and consider the implications for organizations providing support to people who are often struggling simultaneously with their finances and mental health. Humans mistreating, exploiting, and abusing animals is a common problem in our society and is related to speciesism. Speciesism refers to when humans assign different worth to beings based on their species. A way used by animal activists to reduce harmful behaviors toward animals involves showing people illustrations of situations in which animals are harmed but where the roles of animals and humans are reversed. It is unclear, however, whether this intervention is successful in reducing speciesist attitudes and behaviors toward animals. As the intervention may increase awareness of the treatment of animals, perspective-taking, and feelings associated with injustice we expected it to reduce speciesism compared with a control condition. In two studies (nStudy1 = 231 and nStudy2 = 399), participants either watched or did not watch a video showing situations in which humans take the role of nonhuman animals and vice versa. Participants' speciesist attitudes, behavioral intentions, and behavioral responses were measured. Studies 1 and 2 showed that participants in the intervention condition more strongly intended to reduce their (in)directly harmful behavior toward animals than those in the control condition. Feelings associated with injustice mediated this effect (Study 2). There were no effects on speciesist attitude or behavioral responses. The intervention shows promise as people intended to change their behavior. Reasons for why the intervention changed intentions but not attitudes or behavioral responses are discussed. Purpose: Companion animals and social media are two important factors of social interaction and well-being among the older population. This study aims to compare social media use and/or having companion animals with respect to sociodemographic variables in conjunction with loneliness, social isolation, depression, satisfaction with life and satisfaction with social support. Design/methodology/approach: This cross-sectional study involves a sample of 250 older community-dwelling adults. The questionnaire comprised sociodemographic, companion animals and social media questions and scales to assess social isolation, loneliness, satisfaction with life and social support and depression. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings: Four groups emerged: "companion animal/s, no social media" (37.6%); "none" (33.6%); "social media and companion animal/s" (14.4%); and "social media, no companion animal/s" (14.4%). Social media users (with or without companion animals) are the youngest and with higher levels of education; caregivers of companion animals (no social media use) are in-between in terms of age and level of education; and those without companion animals and no social media users are the oldest and with less formal education. Originality/value: This research examines and compares two key influencers of older adults' well-being and social interaction (social media and companion animals), that have been researched mostly separately. Findings underlined the cohort effect in the use of social media, suggesting that future older adult cohorts will use more social media whether they have or do not have companion animals. The present review has two objectives, the first is to investigate the differences in temperament between Bos indicus and Bos taurus breeds and determining the effects on production due to positive treatment and to compare this with negative HAR, by using the Five Domain Model as framework. The second objective is to discuss potential strategies to achieve better HAR when working with Bos indicus cattle. Bos indicus are more reactive and temperamental than Bos taurus cattle. When human animal relationships (HAR) are evaluated, Bos indicus cattle may react with greater intensity. They may be more likely to develop a negative emotional state, especially in extensively raised Bos indicus cattle that are handled only a few times each year. Bos indicus cattle can have positive emotional states when they have frequent positive interactions with people. Interactions with people, both positive and negative, would be in the fourth Domain of the Five Domains model. Cattle that are more reactive during handling may also have lower weight gain, even when they have abundant feed. This would be in the first Domain of Nutrition. When cattle are handled in races and corrals, injuries may be more likely to occur. Injuries and bruises would be in the third Domain of Health. Injuries could be caused by either poor handling practices by people or poor handling facilities. Yelling or electric prod use would be examples of poor HAR. Animal domestication led to changes in the interaction between animals and humans, including new ways of exploitation, which could potentially leave lesions on the animals' bones. This study aims to examine changes in the prevalence of pathological manifestation following changes in human‐animal interactions as a result their domestication. For this purpose, we studied 19,565 animal remains recovered from archaeological excavations, dated from the Pre‐Pottery Neolithic period to historical periods and assigned the pathologies into types. Of these, 60 animal remains presented pathological lesions. The suspected pathological cases were validated using a microscope, X‐ray, and/or micro‐CT scan. Lesions were divided into four categories: trauma, aging/musculoskeletal stress marks (MSM), periodontal diseases, and inflammatory processes. Then, our database was combined with previously published data to a total of 26,596 animal remains, out of which 128 demonstrated pathological lesions. We found that the prevalence of lesions in animals was higher in the historical periods compared with prehistoric periods. Moreover, based on a comparison between recent gazelles living in captivity and those living in the wild, we found that captivity resulted in the deterioration of the animals' health. We concluded that pathologies were more frequent in livestock in historic periods, in comparison with wild species and livestock from earlier periods. Such lesions were common not only in working livestock (cattle and donkeys) but also in non‐working domesticates (caprines and chickens) and companion animals (dogs and cats). Variations in the pathological frequencies between these three categories may be attributed to differences in exploitation, including the intensification of farming and herding. Simple Summary: AAC involves a trained mental health practitioner, a therapy animal, and a client participating in goal-oriented interventions. These sessions, characterized by human–animal interactions, aim to strengthen the human–animal bond when beneficial to both client and animal. Through this bond, clients may experience reduced mental health symptoms, improved communication skills, and a stronger therapeutic relationship. While research suggests that human–animal interactions can enhance rapport in counseling, it is crucial to recognize that clients and practitioners may have varying perceptions of these interactions. Historically, animals have been used in aggressive and violent practices within communities of color, and, across different cultures and religions, animals may be revered, forbidden, or slaughtered. Therefore, animal-assisted practitioners must address trauma, race, culture, and religion as they relate to animals before introducing AAC. This article aims to explore how AAC practitioners can prevent harm to the human–animal bond by practicing cultural humility. The purpose of this manuscript is to enhance the understanding of how racial, social, and cultural factors influence animal-assisted counseling (AAC). As AAC gains popularity, there is an increasing need for clinicians to practice cultural humility and awareness. While AAC has proven beneficial, clinicians must consider the diverse cultural, religious, and trauma-related perceptions of animals. The American Counseling Association (ACA) has established AAC competencies that highlight the importance of understanding these social and cultural factors, assessing past animal-related trauma, and evaluating client suitability for AAC in the United States. Similarly, in 2018, the International Association of Human-Animal Interactions Organizations (IAHAIO) and, in 2024, the Association of Animal-Assisted Intervention Professionals (AAAIP) set standards for competencies related to clients' cultural backgrounds, trauma, and historical oppressions related to certain species. By addressing these considerations, clinicians can better promote and protect the welfare of both clients and therapy animals. While these organizations generally emphasize ethical standards, professional guidelines, and safeguarding client–animal relationships, this manuscript advocates for a more robust examination of cultural, racial, and societal factors in the use of AAC. This includes not only recognizing the ethical implications but also understanding how diverse backgrounds and access disparities shape the effectiveness, acceptability, and accessibility of AAC interventions. This approach integrates culturally responsive practices and promotes a deeper exploration of how race, culture, religion, and societal factors influence human–animal relationships. Simple Summary: Campus-based dog programs can reduce stress and enhance wellbeing in university students and staff. However, most research has focused on adult dogs, who are well-trained and accompanied by a handler. In our study, participants came to the university campus for 20 min interactions with an assistance dog puppy in training and their handler during one visit, and the handler alone in another visit. We asked participants about their stress and vitality levels before and after each interaction. Stress was lower after the interaction with the puppy and handler compared to the handler alone. Vitality was greater after both visits among participants who had their session with the puppy and handler first. This study indicates that assistance dog puppies in training, with knowledgeable handlers, can be effective in campus-based visitation dog programs. Brief interactions with a well-behaved dog can enhance wellbeing, but most campus-based dog visitation programs employ adult, trained dogs. There is little research about the impact of puppies on wellbeing or stress in this context. The aim of this study was to examine changes in perceived stress and vitality after interacting with a puppy. Staff and students (N = 32) at an Australian university attended the campus on two occasions, one week apart, as part of a crossover design. Participants were pseudo-randomly allocated to a group whereby they spent 20 min interacting with a handler alone at Visit 1 and interacted with a puppy and handler at Visit 2, or another group which reversed the interaction order. Perceived stress and subjective vitality were measured before and after each interaction. The increase in vitality was greater in the group experiencing the puppy and handler interaction first (significant main effect, F(1,49) = 646.89, p = 0.024, η2p = 1.00), regardless of the visit, possibly due to a social lubricating effect by the puppy, which carried over to the 'handler alone' second visit. Reductions in perceived stress were greater after the interaction with the puppy, for both groups (significant interaction effect, F(1,49) = 5.13, p = 0.029, η2p = 0.11), indicating that the puppy's presence can reduce stress more than the handler alone. This extends the evidence for university-based dog-facilitated wellbeing programs, by showing that interactions with puppies can also be effective. Adolescence is a key developmental period for the onset of social anxiety, as it is a time of social transitions and stressors. Therefore, it is important to identify protective factors within the environment that can prevent and/or reduce the effects of social anxiety in addition to existing evidence-based treatments. The presence of a supportive pet dog may be one way of reducing the effects of acute social stressors for youth, but these effects have not been tested robustly in real-world settings. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to assess physiological responses to pet interactions in real-life scenarios among adolescents with social anxiety (n = 37). Results indicated that this protocol was perceived as feasible by youth participants and allowed for integration across different data streams. Participant use of a wearable sensor to collect electrodermal activity was generally successful, with an average of 12 h of data collected per participant. However, the use of a timestamp button on the sensor was not an effective strategy for data collection. These findings suggest that EMA using self-report activity diary data combined with continuous psychophysiological measurement using wearable sensors is generally a feasible person-centered approach for measuring adolescent-dog interactions in a way that maintains ecological validity.

Introduction: Animal-assisted interventions (AAI) offer potential physical and psychological health benefits that may assist Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. However, more feasibility studies are needed regarding intervention details, adverse events, reasons for study withdrawal, and animal welfare. Methods: This mixed methods feasibility trial involved a modified crossover study in which Veterans with PTSD/PTSD symptoms were provided a series of 8 nature and wildlife immersion experiences to evaluate feasibility and preliminary efficacy. The sample included 19 Veterans with PTSD/PTSD symptoms who were followed for a mean of 15.1 weeks. The intervention was comprised of a baseline forest walk, assisting with wildlife rehabilitation, observation in a wildlife sanctuary, and bird watching. Post study bird feeders were provided for sustainability. The theory of transcendent pluralism, which is grounded in mutual human and ecological dignity, guided the study. We viewed feasibility from the perspective of pattern integration with the natural world. Results: This AAI nature/wildlife immersion intervention was feasible, acceptable, and safe to administer to Veterans with PTSD/PTSD symptoms with appropriate support. Logistical and relational facilitators were identified that supported the wildlife immersion activities. Participants reported greatly enjoying the activities. Attention to animal welfare and care was an important ethical foundation that also contributed to feasibility. Discussion: AAI immersion experiences with wildlife are feasible and can safely be administered to Veterans with PTSD/PTSD symptoms. Dogs are able to cooperate in reciprocal exchange with humans but little is known about the extent of these abilities (Range & Virányi, 2015). In the Still Face paradigm, infants reply to a sudden nonreciprocal facial expression with gaze aversion and an increase in re-engagement and distress behaviors (E. Tronick et al., 1978). We directly adapted this method; the dog's owner talked to the dog, then abruptly switched to a still, neutral face, maintaining eye contact. In Study 1 (N = 20), we found that dogs showed a significant decrease in the amount of looking at the owner in the Still Face phase, paralleling the results found in gaze aversion in infants, and they performed fewer pawing and vocalizations toward the person in the Still Face phase. In Study 2 (N = 60), we included one condition of continuous physical contact, and one condition that was a direct replication of the initial study without physical contact. Similar to human infants, we found a significant decrease in looking from the Interaction phase to the Still Face phase. However, in contrast to human infants, re-engagement and stress behaviors were higher in the Interaction phase than the Still Face phase. Looking and re-engagement behaviors differed based on the condition, with a smaller difference between phases in the Petting condition. These results suggest that dogs are capable of perceiving these small changes in human affect. However, unlike human infants, dogs seem to have greater expectations about physical interactions than verbal interactions, as they reacted more strongly to an Interaction phase without physical contact than the Still Face. Mirroring the patterns of primary research, there is a significant and growing increase in the number of systematic reviews (SRs) in the human–animal interaction (HAI) field. This article describes the content of published SRs and compares their reporting practices against the rigorous, prescribed methodologies associated with quality SRs. This study was designed to describe the characteristics of HAI SRs in terms of publication patterns, human subjects, animal(s) of interest, and outcomes and determine the extent to which they follow recommended practices for transparency and reproducibility. Thirteen bibliographic databases were searched for articles containing both an HAI-related term and an SR term. We screened 766 articles for relevance and coded 110 of them for desired data. The majority of reviews (54.55%) were published between 2019 and 2022. Most (65.45%) did not specify the age of human populations studied, but specified ages included children or adolescents, adults, and older adults. A range of human conditions was studied, including, among others, dementia, autism spectrum disorder, and chronic illness. A slight majority of studies (51.82%) did not specify the animal species to be studied, but those that did included, singly or in combination, dogs, horses, robotic animals, and farm or food animals. The majority of studies (63.63%) referred to PRISMA or other methodological guidelines. Across all studies, 163 different databases were searched, with PubMed, PsycINFO, and CINAHL among the most frequently used. Few studies (18.18%) referred to consultation with an information professional. A slight majority (52.72%) provided a full search strategy for at least one database. Most (67.27%) did not include gray literature searches, and most (72.72%) included an assessment of quality or risk of bias for the studies included in their review. In light of their importance in informing practices and policies, and because they are viewed as the most reliable study type, SR reporting in the HAI field should reflect best practices. There is room for improvement in reporting among HAI SRs. Suggestions are offered for ways HAI educators and journal editors may improve SR methodologies and reporting in the field. This paper is a product of qualitative, ethnographic fieldwork which looked at interactions between Emirati people and camels. Both in traditional Bedu contexts and among contemporary breeders/riders/racers in the Arabian Gulf, camels have been useful to people as an economic resource or symbolic tool, but they have also been agents creating paths for human cultural activity. They are the lens through which people observe their society, yet they are also perceived as beings with lifeworlds of their own. In a humanizing effort they can represent what is inherently cultural, but they can also be seen as separate beings that inform people's worldviews. Recognizing animals' agency, observing the obliteration of subject–object boundaries in animal-centric cultures requires fundamental ontological revisions. This paper aims to propose a paradigm useful for multispecies ethnography studies, rooted in exploring entanglements between anthropological phenomenology and object-oriented ontology. Appreciating the central roles of experience, embodiment, and senses in human connections with animals make phenomenology a potent analytical framework for such studies. Ontologically speaking, the essence of interactions between camels and their Emirati aficionados can represent the nature of people's being-in-the-world, shaping their mental universe and cognitive processes. The main contributions of the research include using empirical evidence to address some of the recurring criticisms of object-oriented ontology and positioning these analyses within the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council countries) context, which has rarely been done before. Because facility dogs can provide comfort to vulnerable testifying witnesses, they are beginning to become commonplace in some courtrooms. However, certain dogs (and by extension the witness they testify with) might be discriminated against because of their coat color. Known as "Black Dog Bias" (BDB), black dogs are often reported to be discriminated against in animal adoption centers, resulting in higher rates of euthanasia. Black dogs are often viewed as less friendly, less emotionally stable, and more aggressive than their other-colored counterparts. Other research, however, argues that BDB does not exist; rather, bias against certain dogs is associated with phenotypic traits or breed. With the proliferation of facility dog employment in courtrooms, there is a possibility that BDB also could manifest in this setting. This study investigated whether BDB occurs in the courtroom and affects perceptions of the witness through the social psychological process of transference. A child witness, as they were testifying about a sexual assault, was either comforted by a black dog, a white dog, or no dog. Counterintuitively, community-member participants (n = 133) believed that the witnesses appeared less sad, less emotional, and happier when comforted by a black dog compared with a white dog. Furthermore, perceptions of the witness were not affected by the facility dog, suggesting that transference did not occur. A potential explanation for the findings posits that a stereotype violation occurs when a black dog serves as a facility dog, allowing the animal to be perceived positively. This finding adds a new caveat to BDB – that when a black dog fulfills a positive role, this might cause a stereotype violation that leads to positive evaluations of that dog. These findings also contribute to existing literature that the presence of facility dogs is more beneficial than harmful to courtroom settings, suggesting that they do not seem to unfairly sway juries. Hemodialysis (HD) is a burdensome clinical process that demands frequent and long visits to the clinic every week indefinitely, yet strict adherence to its regimen is paramount to overall health and wellbeing. Effective approaches are needed to not only reduce patients' rates of missed treatments but also ease the overall burden and stress associated with long-term HD use. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore HD patients' attitudes toward a clinic-based animal-assisted intervention (AAI) to build an understanding of its perceived fit within this novel setting, as well as how this intervention could improve their treatment adherence. Patients from four outpatient clinics engaged in one-on-one, in-depth semi-structured interviews that were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Within a framework of iterative thematic analysis, the Matrix Method was utilized in combination with line-by-line coding to thematically analyze data. A total of 20 patients (age M = 57, SD = 7.93) participated. Results are reflected in four main themes: (1) The dread and suffering of endless treatment; (2) Yearning for the presence of therapy dogs at the clinic; (3) Therapy dogs can aid in the internal battle of treatment adherence; (4) The logistics of incorporating therapy dogs into HD care routine. Participants' narratives collectively illustrate the perceived value of AAI in the HD clinic setting. This study improves not only our understanding of how HD patients perceive clinic-based therapy-dog visits but also offers helpful insights for implementing this intervention in future research. Incorporating therapy dogs into HD patients' healthcare routine may offer an innovative approach to improving patient outcomes, and the results of this study are a compelling prompt to empirically investigate the role of AAI in HD treatment adherence. As human activities continue to negatively affect bat populations, bat conservation efforts continue to rely on questionnaires to understand human actions toward bats; however, the use of questionnaires constrains understanding by limiting the sample size to those who choose to participate, being subject to selection bias, and overall may not be the most efficient way of understanding sentiments and behaviors toward bats. We used social media to analyze sentiment toward bat exploitation behaviors in Asia and evaluated the influence that these posts have on users in the region. We gathered and analyzed a total of 458 social media posts and 2,427 comments throughout Asia utilizing keywords and hashtags in 16 languages. We found that nearly 90% of initial posts discussing bat exploitations were discussed in an acceptive, pro-bat exploitation way. Initial posts from Southeast and South Asia showed acceptance of bat exploitation. Comments on posts from Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines and Indonesia, were acceptive of bat exploitation for food and medicine, whereas comments on posts from South Asia were rejective of bat exploitation, in contrast, with the initial South Asian posts, which were more acceptive of persecution of bats. We recommend using social media platforms to promote messages that reject bat exploitation and encourage bat conservation efforts as our results indicate that positive messages receive mostly positive comments, reinforcing the importance of protecting bats. Pet-directed speech and infant-directed speech sound similar. This study concerned this similarity, specifically with respect to (a) the relative degree of emotion in speech to pets and infants, (b) if the degree of emotion is affected by whether the speaker has only a pet, only an infant, or both a pet and an infant, and (c) any differences in the social or psychological determinants of emotion in speech to pets versus infants. Emotion in speech is conveyed by various factors, most notably via the semantics and prosody of the speech. Here we compared the prosody of pet-owners' and parents' speech; that is, their "vocal emotion" in three groups of women: those only with a pet (n = 10, only pet-directed speech recorded), only an infant (n = 10, only infant-directed speech recorded), or both a pet and infant (n = 10, both pet- and infant-directed speech recorded). The degree of vocal emotion, derived from naïve listeners' ratings on a well-established set of communicative intent scales, was found to be similar in the pet-directed speech of women who had only a dog and the infant-directed speech of those who had only an infant. However, for women with both a pet and an infant, vocal emotion was significantly lower in their pet- than their infant-directed speech. Regression analyses showed no social/psychological predictors of vocal emotion in infant-directed speech, but there were both positive and negative predictors of pet-directed speech. The better the pet owner's social support, the greater vocal emotion in their pet-directed speech, and if the pet owner also had an infant, then there was less vocal emotion. Childhood nature experiences – particularly those shared with caregivers – have consistently, over decades of research, been linked to children's health, as well as their developing environmental commitments. Notably, animal interactions have been shown to play key roles in children's psychological wellbeing and their developing conservation concerns. We investigated nature experiences children share with their parents, with a particular focus on those that involve interactions with animals. Parents (n = 49) of young children completed a written survey in which they provided a short narrative describing a significant experience in nature that they had shared with their child. The narrative accounts were systematically coded and interrater reliability was attained. The qualitative findings offer a rich account of nature experiences that children and parents share. Three broad themes were identified – (1) Typology of Nature Experiences, (2) Psychosocial Factors, and (3) Relational Bonding – and are illustrated and discussed within the context of promoting healthy childhood relationships with their caregivers and the wider natural world. Perinatal wellbeing is a critical area of mental health to address for the benefit of parents, infants, pets, and health services. Animals, and specifically pets, have been investigated as potential wellbeing supports in clinical and non-clinical populations, yet there has been limited exploration of their role in the perinatal period. To address this gap, this study aimed to examine the perceived risks and benefits of pet ownership on perinatal mental health through qualitative reports of lived experience from mothers with pets. An online survey with open-text questions was developed; thematic analysis was applied to data from 31 eligible UK participants. The analysis identified five themes: (1) promoting wellbeing and grounding in a time of change, (2) pets as preparation for parenting, (3) caregiver burden, (4) joy and challenges of pet–baby interactions, and (5) perceptions of changing pet behavior in the perinatal period. This study indicates that accessing emotional support from pets, second-hand joy from the pet–baby bond, and having "parenting practice" are perceived wellbeing benefits from pets. Further, parents expressed that increasing social support for pet and childcare, creating boundaries for pet–baby interactions, and managing perinatal expectations could help minimize risks identified by participants, including caregiver burden and pet-based distress and anxiety. These insights may allow practitioners supporting pet-owning new parents to begin exploring new ways for families to manage pets in the perinatal period in a way that enhances wellbeing for everyone involved, including pets. Situated within an important nexus for many human–animal relationships is the profession of veterinary nursing, a profession in which burnout is an increasing problem, affecting wellbeing and retention and, consequently, animal welfare. Self-care strategies can reduce the effects of burnout in the short term. However, organizational interventions are required to achieve long term change. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of burnout in veterinary nurses and identify organizational risk factors, in accordance with the Areas of Worklife model, that must be addressed to reduce burnout in this population. Seven databases and Google Scholar were searched using terms related to "burnout" and "veterinary nurses." Primary empirical studies published in English that examined organizational factors related to burnout in veterinary nurses were eligible for inclusion. Article screening and selection was completed by two reviewers and quality assessment was carried out using two validated quality assessment tools. Twelve articles were identified: nine cross-sectional surveys and three mixed-methods studies. Available data were insufficient to accurately determine burnout prevalence, but it appears that veterinary nurses are at moderate to high risk of developing burnout. Organizational risk factors for burnout in veterinary nurses were identified in all six Areas of Worklife domains (Workload, Control, Reward, Community, Fairness, and Values). Common risk factors include high workload, low control and autonomy, underutilization, low remuneration, co-worker incivility, inequitable treatment, poor work–life balance, and exposure to animal suffering, euthanasia, and death. Recommended management strategies include increased opportunities for skill utilization and development, workload and task adjustments, and increased schedule control. However, the extent to which these strategies are effective in individuals and practicable for organizations remains poorly understood. The transition to parenthood is a time of change and challenge, where new attachments are developed and old ones are re-appraised to fit the needs of the new family. Research on how this transition affects parental attachment to the family pet dog is scarce. This study explored attachment orientation differences among female dog owners without children and female dog owners who had recently become new mothers. Factors that may underpin these differences were also explored. New mothers (n = 98) and childless women (n = 93) completed an online survey that measured the degree to which they were anxiously and avoidantly attached to their pet dog. Significant differences in attachment orientations were found: the parent group had more avoidant, and less anxious, attachment styles toward their pet dogs, compared with the childless group. Qualitative insights revealed new mothers suffer from a lack of time, energy, and attention to afford their dog and that the role of the dog in the family may be re-appraised to accommodate the new family member. These outcomes provide insight into how Australian women experience their attachment relationships to their pet dogs. This study has implications for both pet and maternal welfare. Human–horse relationships can be experienced in many ways and the horse companion can be given various roles, from a partner in action to a tool or commodity. How humans experience connection with horses and what kinds of roles are assigned to them may reflect or even depend on the real-life co-actions and environments. In this study, we assessed experiences of intersubjectivity in human–horse relationships, focusing particularly on whether and how agency and emotional and embodied intersubjectivity with the horse were discussed by horse owners. We conducted the study in two different stable environments, namely box stables and open-shed stables, that differ particularly in the horses' possibilities to execute independent decision-making in their daily lives. We conducted semi-structured interviews of 25 horse owners and analyzed them using theory-guided qualitative content analysis for notions of agency and intersubjectivity. Overall, while there were only a few explicit accounts of embodied intersubjectivity in action, it was most explicitly apparent in descriptions of hacking and doing other things than riding. Additionally, intersubjectivity was apparent in descriptions of horse emotions. There were several differences in the horse owners' accounts at the different stable environments. Respondents at the open-shed stables assigned agency more often to the horse or simultaneously themselves and the horse, discussed more often horse emotions, and emphasized hacking, playing, or just being with the horse as meaningful co-actions. At the box stables, accounts emphasizing competing, self-evidence of riding as the main activity, and human agency in co-action were more common. These results show that the management environment and forms of co-action are connected to the thoughts and views equestrians have on agency and experiences of intersubjectivity in horse–human relationships. Simple Summary: This study examined how different types of human–animal interactions affect the welfare of nursery pigs, focusing on both their behavior and cardiac activity. Thirty-six pigs were divided into three groups based on whether they experienced positive, minimal, or rough human handling over a six-week period. Each pig was then individually tested in an experimental setting with the handler. Pigs exposed to negative handling presented more fear-related behaviors, spent less time in contact, and received fewer strokes than those handled positively. They also exhibited physiological responses indicating greater stress. Conversely, pigs handled gently displayed more affiliative behaviors and greater parasympathetic activation, potentially indicating a positive emotional state. Minimally handled pigs presented some behavioral similarities to gently handled pigs, but physiological data indicated a more positive interaction for gently handled pigs. These results emphasize how the quality of human–animal relationships impacts pigs' affective state and welfare. The human–animal relationship is crucial for animal welfare. Gentle handling enhances pigs' comfort while rough handling causes fear and stress. This study examined how different human–animal relationship qualities affect the behavior and heart rate variability (linear and non-linear parameters) of 36 nursery pigs. Over six weeks, pigs experienced positive (n = 12), minimal (n = 12), or negative (n = 12) human handling. Their responses to handlers were then assessed in an experimental arena with four phases: habituation, exposure to the handler standing and sitting, and forced interaction. Pigs subjected to negative handling exhibited increased fear-related behaviors, spending less time in contact with the handler. They also exhibited heightened stress responses, with greater LF/HF ratio and Lmean values compared with positively handled pigs. Conversely, gently handled pigs displayed affiliative behaviors, accepting more strokes, and higher parasympathetic activation, indicated by greater RMSSD/SDNN and SampEn values, suggesting a more positive affective state. Minimally handled pigs exhibited some behavioral similarities to gently handled pigs, although physiological data indicated that the interaction was likely more rewarding for the gently handled pigs. The common consensus is that owning pets affects human health positively. However, the effects of owning pets on mental health are still controversial. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the possible association with anxiety (AN), depression (DE), stress (ST), and owning cats and dogs in Türkiye. Additionally, the potential impact of personality traits on this relationship was examined. This study included 636 participants, of whom 52% were female (Mage = 33.02, SD = 15.78). Data were obtained using a Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 and the Big Five Personality Inventory. The findings revealed that owning cats and dogs was a promotive factor against AN (p < 0.001), DE (p < 0.01), and ST (p < 0.01) in the Turkish population. Among sociodemographic variables, marital status was found to be a risk factor for AN (p < 0.05) and DE (p < 0.05). Moreover, among the five personality traits, agreeableness (AGR) was determined to be a promotive factor in opposition to AN, DE, and ST. At the same time, openness (OPE) and neuroticism (NEU) were detected as risk factors. The results suggest that owning cats and dogs can provide benefits to human psychology. This study aimed to develop and validate the Human-Animal Interaction at Work Scale (HAI@WS). This instrument is designed to measure human-animal interactions during work time. We conducted four studies to achieve this goal. First, we developed the scale, followed by a study to explore its factorial structure (N = 1013). The third study analyzed the scale's internal validity and reliability (N = 253). The fourth study was a daily-diary investigation that assessed the criterion validity of the HAI@WS by examining its within-person correlations with measures of performance, satisfaction, and work engagement (N = 145 × 5 = 725). The findings revealed that the three-item scale represented a single factor and is a reliable measure of human-animal interactions in the work context. Additionally, the results indicated that the scale was significantly related to measures of performance, satisfaction, and work engagement at the within-person level. This study fills a research gap by providing a validated measure for assessing human-animal interactions in the workplace, an area previously lacking such tools. The HAI@WS is valuable for managers seeking to evaluate how the presence of pets at work—whether during teleworking or in the office—and the resulting interactions with employees can satisfy biological and psychological needs, thereby promoting positive outcomes such as work engagement and positive affective work-related experiences. Human knowledge pertaining to human-animal interaction is constructed by the human author, albeit the presence of animal subjects. Such a human lens is pronounced when studying human-animal interactions across history, whose nonhuman animal subjects are not only absent, and therefore eliminating the possibility of conducting empirical studies in situ, but also their experiences are filtered by the interpretative lens of human authors of extant historical accounts as well as contemporary human analysts who interpret these accounts. This article draws upon such epistemological limitations of understanding nonhuman animal presence in historical accounts and offers human-animal intersubjectivity as an analytical concept, involving generative iterability and indistinctive boundaries that emphasise intersubjective openness and relationality, to trace and disclose the continuity of human-animal co-existence. The article's historical scope is the Late Ottoman period characterised by a sense of temporal and spatial disorientation and reorientation for humans as well as street dogs during its modernisation processes. Attachment relationships are widely recognized as influential in increasing prosocial tendencies, with existing literature indicating that human attachment can increase empathetic processes, thereby potentially facilitating prosocial behavior. Given that pets frequently fulfill the criteria for attachment figures, this study investigates whether the observed associations among human attachment, empathy, and prosocial attitudes extend to human-animal interactions (HAI). This study examines the relationship between pet attachment, animal empathy, and prosocial attitudes toward humans. The study hypothesizes that animal empathy mediates the association between pet attachment and prosocial attitudes. A cross-sectional survey was administered to 343 Filipino participants, predominantly consisting of single female young adults with college education backgrounds. Participants completed a battery of assessments including the Contemporary Companion Animal Bonding Scale (CCABS), the Animal Empathy Scale (AES), and the Prosocialness Scale for Adults (PSA). Aligned with our hypothesis, our study reveals that animal empathy plays a significant mediating role in the relationship between pet attachment and attitudes toward humans. We found that stronger pet attachment correlates positively with heightened animal empathy, subsequently leading to elevated levels of prosocial attitudes. This study had a correlational design and aimed to develop and validate a database of dual-perspective (entire face and ¾ face) face-focused photographs depicting pets (dogs, cats, miniature rabbits) and livestock animals (pigs and cattle). Participants (n = 268, 82% women, Mage = 28.2, SD = 8.5) viewed 72 pairs of photographs and evaluated each animal's similarity across two photographs, as well as their valence, typicality, familiarity, cuteness, and dangerousness. The results confirmed that livestock animals received lower ratings in terms of similarity across the two photographs and were perceived as less positively valenced, less typical, less familiar, less cute, and more dangerous compared with pets. Furthermore, individual characteristics were found to be related to the perception of animals. Compared with non-owners, pet owners rated both livestock and pets more positively valenced and cuter. Additionally, the frequency of meat consumption was associated with perceiving livestock animals as less positively valenced, less cute, and more dangerous. The database provides realistic and valid stimuli, which have the potential to facilitate investigations into animal perception and recognition within the context of human–animal relationships. Experiencing the ghosts of the departed is a common, cross-cultural experience of grief; such interactions are part of so-called externalized continuing bonds and represent an ongoing relationship with the departed. This paper characterizes people's reported supernatural experiences with the spirits of their deceased dogs and analyzes them in the context of bereavement, externalized continuing bonds, and disenfranchised grief. Using a thematic analysis, 544 candid online comments from social media where people shared their supernatural experiences were studied. These comments fell into two major themes with six subthemes: physical experiences (hearing, seeing, and touching the ghost of a dog) and interpreted experiences (seeing signs in nature, receiving visits from the deceased dog in dreams, and attributing feelings and phenomena to the spirit of the dog). How people described the feelings associated with these supernatural visits were also studied; three themes were found: Positive Feelings, Mixed to Sad Feelings, and Messages. The vast majority of reported feelings (74.6%) were positive, bringing people comfort, reassurance, and a sense of protection. While psychology largely characterizes externalized continuing bonds – particularly seeing ghosts – as negative and even maladaptive, this is in conflict with the findings. These supernatural experiences may serve a different role for grieving dog guardians. Given that disenfranchised grief is common due to the lack of cultural support for people mourning their dogs, and grief over companion animals is often complicated by guilt, these supernatural experiences may serve as an important source of comfort and a way for the bereaved to engage with loss. Although there is extensive literature on bereavement after the loss of pets, it has almost exclusively focused on traditional pets, such as cats and dogs, to the exclusion of many other species that are also popular pets. We targeted caregivers of less-traditional pets, such as reptiles, birds, fish, and exotics, to assess their experiences when grieving their loss. Specifically, we examined the manner in which they reported the loss and the degree of perceived support they received from close and more distant associates as well as their grief over the loss. We surveyed 464 pet owners, 337 of whom reported the loss of a pet other than a cat or dog. We examined whether their experiences of grief, sharing loss, and receiving support differed from those of cat and dog owners. We also assessed the role of the pet (i.e., as companion or other), whether they were housed in an enclosure, concerns about the pet, and problem behaviors as predictors, with the owner's attachment to the pet as a mediator. Pet role, enclosure, and attachment significantly predicted grief. Overall, attachment was a better predictor than pet type for grief, reporting of the loss, and perceived support from others. Evidence from "pet-friendly" workplaces highlights potential benefits associated with taking companion animals to work, including reduced stress among employees. Ornamental fishes carry a much lower risk than other companion animals and may be a suitable alternative in situations where other animals would introduce too great a risk (e.g., allergy, accidental injury). The aim of this study was to investigate whether watching an aquarium during the working day influenced employee wellbeing through the reduction of stress and improvements in stress-related outcomes. An embedded mixed-methods study was conducted, comprising two within-subjects trials (Trials A and B) and a qualitative follow-up. Participants were university employees and research students who participated during their working day. In Trial A (n = 30), the immediate effects of watching live fishes on mood, physiological stress, and cognitive performance were compared with the effects of watching a fish video or resting quietly. Although some outcomes improved from pre- to post-activity, there was no evidence that watching fishes (live or video) had greater effects than resting quietly. In Trial B (n = 27), the effects of repeatedly engaging in the same three activities over several weeks were examined. Watching fish videos was associated with improvements in "high pleasure-low arousal" and overall job-related affective wellbeing, but no further effects of condition were found. Qualitative follow-up data collected from a subset of participants from the experimental trials (n = 13) indicated that all three activities may be beneficial as leaving their desks provided detachment from work for a short period. Qualitative data suggested that live fishes were perceived as more engaging, but this did not translate to quantitative findings. Locating fish aquaria within offices (rather than a separate workplace location) may promote wellbeing by encouraging "microbreaks"; further research is needed to investigate this hypothesis. Equine-Assisted Services (EAS) involve health services and adaptive recreation that include equine interactions to promote human wellbeing. While research around the human health outcomes of EAS has grown considerably, there has been limited exploration into the impact of such services on a key service provider, the horse. This study evaluated whether there is variation in how EAS horses experience different types of unmounted interactions with humans. To answer this question, we utilized a mixed method, repeated measures experiment in which 56 human participants and 14 horses, working at a 1:1 ratio, completed a series of three interactions common to EAS: a grooming, a leading, and a maze condition. To measure equine affect, we recorded heart rate variability (HRV) continuously, took eye temperature (ET) immediately after each interaction, and recorded horse behavior. A mixed effects model indicated that horses displayed greater sympathetic activation in the grooming condition than the leading via Low Frequency/High Frequency Ratio (LF:HF: p < 0.001; ET: p = 0.003) and maze conditions (LF:HF: p = 0.005; ET: p < 0.001). Horses also showed significantly more stress-associated behaviors, such as elevated head carriage and pawing, in the grooming condition. These results indicate that there is potential for equine stress during a grooming activity; therefore, more research is needed to determine optimal approaches for addressing horse welfare in unmounted EAS activities involving human interaction.
