1. Discovering the mechanism of enhanced metabolism in flufenacet resistant grass weeds

Abstract

Inhibitors of very long chain fatty acid synthesis (VLCFAs, HRAC group K3) including flufenacet-based products are key herbicides in weed management strategies in particular of Western European cereal growing areas. They offer an alternative mode of action to those of frequently applied post-emergence active ingredients e.g. ACCase and ALS chemistries. In comparison, herbicide resistance to VLCFAs inhibitors develops considerably slower. Yet, resistance to the ‘low-risk’ herbicide flufenacet was documented in multi-resistant ryegrass (Lolium spp.) in the northwestern United States. A 46-fold resistance shift in a population from Washington State was observed in a dose-response bioassay. The resistance levels described in black-grass (Alopecurus myosuroides Huds.) field populations are lower and generally within the range of environmentally caused inconsistency in efficacy. An artificial selection of two UK multi-resistant black-grass populations with flufenacet applied annually for eight successive years resulted in resistant progeny surviving the field rate. Besides characterizing the degree of resistance in black-grass and ryegrass populations, we demonstrated that flufenacet resistance in these populations was caused by enhanced metabolism. No cross-resistance between flufenacet and pyroxasulfone, the newest VLCFAs-inhibiting herbicide, occurred in the ryegrass population. A good understanding of the resistance mechanism and early diagnostics can help preserve the efficacy of flufenacet.

Abstract

Academic publishing is continuously evolving with the gradual adoption of new technologies. Blockchain is a new technology that promises to change how individuals and organizations interact across various boundaries. The adoption of blockchains is beginning to transform diverse industries such as finance, supply chain, international trade, as well as energy and resource management and many others. Through trust, data immutability, decentralized distribution of data, and facilitation of collaboration without the need for centralized management and authority, blockchains have the potential to transform the academic publishing domain and to address some of the current problems such as productivity and reputation management, predatory publishing, transparent peer-review processes and many others. In this paper, we outline the technologies available in the domain of permissioned blockchains with focus on Hyperledger Fabric and discuss how they can be leveraged in the domain of academic publishing.

Blockchain technology promises a sizable potential for executing inter-organizational business processes without requiring a central party serving as a single point of trust (and failure). Abstract

In April 2016, a community of researchers working in the area of Principles of Data Management (PDM) joined in a workshop at the Dagstuhl Castle in Germany. The workshop was organized jointly by the Executive Committee of the ACM Symposium on Principles of Database Systems (PODS) and the Council of the International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT). The mission of this workshop was to identify and explore some of the most important research directions that have high relevance to society and to Computer Science today, and where the PDM community has the potential to make significant contributions. This report describes the family of research directions that the workshop focused on from three perspectives: potential practical relevance, results already obtained, and research questions that appear surmountable in the short and medium term.

This paper presents 131 additions to the vascular plant floras of Fountain, Gibson, Knox, Parke, Posey, Sullivan, Tippecanoe, Vermillion, Vigo, and Warren Counties in western Indiana. These county records were documented during the first year of a three-year project to document the modern flora of the lower Indiana Wabash River corridor and represent 5.2 percent of the 2,519 voucher specimens collected. Abstract

The Alexandria system under development at IBM Research provides an extensible framework and platform for supporting a variety of big-data analytics and visualizations. The system is currently focused on enabling rapid exploration of text-based social media data. The system provides tools to help with constructing "domain models" (i.e., families of keywords and extractors to enable focus on tweets and other social media documents relevant to a project), to rapidly extract and segment the relevant social media and its authors, to apply further analytics (such as finding trends and anomalous terms), and visualizing the results. The system architecture is centered around a variety of REST-based service APIs to enable flexible orchestration of the system capabilities; these are especially useful to support knowledge-worker driven iterative exploration of social phenomena. The architecture also enables rapid integration of Alexandria capabilities with other social media analytics system, as has been demonstrated through an integration with IBM Research's SystemG. 16. Effects of Stem and Response Order on Response Patterns in Satisfaction Ratings

Abstract

Considerable research has examined the effect of response option order in ordinal bipolar questions such as satisfaction questions. However, no research we know of has examined the effect of the order of presentation of concepts in the question stem or whether stem order moderates response option order. In this article, we experimentally test the main and interaction effects of both stem and response option order for items in self-administered surveys on response distributions and answer changes in eight satisfied/dissatisfied questions. We find consistent evidence that response option order impacts answers. We also find that the order of "satisfied" or "dissatisfied" in the question stem impacts response distributions for four of our eight items but does not moderate the effect of response option order. We discuss the implications of our findings for questionnaire design and secondary data analyses.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Cinmethylin is an inhibitor of plant fatty acid biosynthesis, with in‐plant activity caused by its binding to fatty acid thioesterases (FATs). The recent registration of cinmethylin for pre‐emergence herbicidal use in the UK represents a new mode‐of‐action (MOA) for control of the grassweed blackgrass (Alopecurus myosuroides). To date there is little published information on the extent of blackgrass' inter‐population variability in sensitivity to cinmethylin, nor on any potential effect of existing non‐target‐site resistance (NTSR) mechanisms on cinmethylin efficacy. RESULTS: Here we present a study of variability in cinmethylin sensitivity amongst 97 UK blackgrass populations. We demonstrate that under controlled conditions, a UK field‐rate dose of 500 g ha−1 provides effective control of the tested populations. Nevertheless, we reveal significant inter‐population variability at doses below this rate, with populations previously characterised as strongly NTSR displaying the lowest sensitivity to cinmethylin. Assessment of paired resistant 'R' and sensitive 'S' lines from standardised genetic backgrounds confirms that selection for NTSR to the acetyl‐CoA‐carboxylase inhibitor fenoxaprop, and the microtubule assembly inhibitor pendimethalin, simultaneously results in reduced sensitivity to cinmethylin at doses below 500 g ha−1. Whilst we find no resistance to the field‐rate dose, we reveal that cinmethylin sensitivity can be further reduced through experimental selection with cinmethylin. CONCLUSION: Cinmethylin therefore represents a much‐needed further MOA for blackgrass control, but needs to be carefully managed within a resistance monitoring and integrated weed management (IWM) framework to maximise the effective longevity of this compound. © 2024 The Authors. 25. Trajectory and Policy Aware Sender Anonymity in Location Based Services

Abstract

We consider Location-based Service (LBS) settings, where a LBS provider logs the requests sent by mobile device users over a period of time and later wants to publish/share these logs. Log sharing can be extremely valuable for advertising, data mining research and network management, but it poses a serious threat to the privacy of LBS users. Sender anonymity solutions prevent a malicious attacker from inferring the interests of LBS users by associating them with their service requests after gaining access to the anonymized logs. With the fast-increasing adoption of smartphones and the concern that historic user trajectories are becoming more accessible, it becomes necessary for any sender anonymity solution to protect against attackers that are trajectory-aware (i.e. have access to historic user trajectories) as well as policy-aware (i.e they know the log anonymization policy). We call such attackers TP-aware. This paper introduces a first privacy guarantee against TP-aware attackers, called TP-aware sender k-anonymity. It turns out that there are many possible TP-aware anonymizations for the same LBS log, each with a different utility to the consumer of the anonymized log. The problem of finding the optimal TP-aware anonymization is investigated. We show that trajectory-awareness renders the problem computationally harder than the trajectory-unaware variants found in the literature (NP-complete in the size of the log, versus PTIME). We describe a PTIME l-approximation algorithm for trajectories of length l and empirically show that it scales to large LBS logs (up to 2 million users).

28. Investigation of the mechanisms underlying the regulation of macrophage activation and glomerular inflammation by JunD

Abstract

Macrophages are the predominant immune effector cell found in one of the most severe causes of renal failure in humans, crescentic glomerulonephritis (Crgn). The Wistar Kyoto (WLY) rat is uniquely susceptible among rat strains to Crgn and susceptibility genes have previously been mapped to seven quantitative trait loci (Crgn1-7). The AP-1 transcription factor JunD is markedly overexpressed in WKY macrophages and was identified as a major determinant of macrophage activation associated with Crgn susceptibility at Crgn2. The work presented in this thesis aimed to investigate mechanisms underlying the regulation of macrophage activation and glomerular inflammation by JunD in the NTN-susceptible WKY rat strain and in patients with Crgn. Genomic-based approaches, including microarray analysis of bone marrow-derived macrophage transcriptomes, RNA interference and cistrome analysis using ChIP-Seq, along with histological techniques and genotyping studies, were used to identify key genes and pathways underlying JunD-mediated activation of macrophages. Transcriptome analyses showed that the Crgn2 locus regulates expression of over 800 genes in WKY macrophage responses to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Acute changes in Jund expression by RNA interference also modulated gene expression in WKY macrophages, including effector genes for the macrophage LPS response. Cistrome analysis revealed that genetically determined differences in Jund expression alter its genome binding pattern and the increased numbers of JunD-bound genes in WKY macrophages were functionally linked with signalling pathways and cell activation. Integration of the data identified 47 genes, that were associated with JunD binding peaks and whose expression was both regulated by Crgn2 and altered by siRNA knockdown of Jund, as the key candidates through which JunD determines macrophage activation. Overall, this work provides the basis for understanding genes and pathways through which JunD regulates macrophage activation and has identified novel gene targets for modulation of macrophage phenotypes in WKY rat and human macrophages.

30. Policy-Aware Sender Anonymity in Location Based Services

Abstract

Sender anonymity in location-based services (LBS) attempts to hidethe identity of a mobile device user who sends requests to the LBS provider forservices in her proximity (e.g. "find the nearest gas station", "theater","restaurant", etc.). The goal is to keep the requester's interests private evenfrom attackers who (via hacking or subpoenas) gain access to the request and tothe locations of the mobile user and other nearby users at the time of therequest. In an LBS context, the best-studied privacy guarantee is known as {\emsender k-anonymity}, which is intended to insure that the request log andprecise location information are insufficient to distinguish among the actualrequester and k-1 other possible requester. We show that state-of-the artsolutions for sender k-anonymity defend only against naive attackers who haveno knowledge of the anonymization policy that is in use. We strengthen theprivacy guarantee to defend against more realistic ``policy-aware'' attackers.Our implementation and experiments show that the novel privacy guarantee haspotential for practical impact, being efficiently enforceable, with limitedreduction in utility when compared to policy-unaware guarantees.Pre-2018 CSE ID: CS2009-0939

43. Acquiring Knowledge from Encyclopedic Texts

Abstract

A computational model for the acquisition of knowledge from encyclopedic texts is described. The model has been implemented in a program, called SNOWY, that reads unedited texts from {\em The World Book Encyclopedia}, and acquires new concepts and conceptual relations about topics dealing with the dietary habits of animals, their classifications and habitats. The program is also able to answer an ample set of questions about the knowledge that it has acquired. This paper describes the essential components of this model, namely semantic interpretation, inferences and representation, and ends with an evaluation of the performance of the program, a sample of the questions that it is able to answer, and its relation to other programs of similar nature., Comment: 7 pages, 7 Postscript figures, uses aclap.sty
