Abstract The origin of energetic charged particles in universe remains an unresolved issue. Astronomical observations combined with simulations have provided insights into particle acceleration mechanisms, including magnetic reconnection acceleration, shock acceleration, and stochastic acceleration. Recent experiments have also confirmed that electrons can be accelerated through processes such as magnetic reconnection and collisionless shock formation. However, laboratory identifying stochastic acceleration as a feasible mechanism is still a challenge, particularly in the creation of collision-free turbulent plasmas. Here, we present experimental results demonstrating kinetic turbulence with a typical spectrum k −2.9 originating from Weibel instability. Energetic electrons exhibiting a power-law distribution are clearly observed. Simulations further reveal that thermal electrons undergo stochastic acceleration through collisions with multiple magnetic islands-like structures within the turbulent region. This study sheds light on a critical transition period during supernova explosion, where kinetic turbulences originating from Weibel instability emerge prior to collisionless shock formation. Our results suggest that electrons undergo stochastic acceleration during this transition phase.

A new approach to target development for laboratory astrophysics experiments at high-power laser facilities is presented. With the dawn of high-power lasers, laboratory astrophysics has emerged as a field, bringing insight into physical processes in astrophysical objects, such as the formation of stars. An important factor for success in these experiments is targetry. To date, targets have mainly relied on expensive and challenging microfabrication methods. The design presented incorporates replaceable machined parts that assemble into a structure that defines the experimental geometry. This can make targets cheaper and faster to manufacture, while maintaining robustness and reproducibility. The platform is intended for experiments on plasma flows, but it is flexible and may be adapted to the constraints of other experimental setups. Examples of targets used in experimental campaigns are shown, including a design for insertion in a high magnetic field coil. Experimental results are included, demonstrating the performance of the targets.

Abstract Background Colon cancer is a heterogeneous tumor and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality. MicroRNA (miRNA) has been proposed as the biomarker in cancers. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical significance and potential functional role of miR-937 in colon cancer. Methods In the present study, reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was conducted to examine the expression levels of miR-937 in colon cancer tissues and cell lines. Kaplan-Meier curve and Cox regression analyses were used to determine the prognostic impact of miR-937 on survival. Cell Counting Kit-8 and Transwell assays were performed to examine cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, respectively. Results miR-937 was significantly upregulated in colon cancer tissues and cell lines. Clinical analysis results showed that miR-937 expression was associated with lymph node metastasis and TNM stage. Patients with high miR-937 expression predicted a shorter overall survival rate. Functionally, overexpression of miR-937 promoted cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, while inhibition of miR-937 inhibited these cellular behaviors in vitro. Conclusions These results suggested that miR-937 may act as a prognostic biomarker and a potential target for therapeutic strategy, as well as promote proliferation, migration, and invasion of colon cancer.

Precise electrochemical synthesis of commodity chemicals and fuels from CO21 building blocks provides a promising route to close the anthropogenic carbon cycle, in which renewable but intermittent electricity could be stored within the greenhouse gas molecules. Here, we report state-of-the-art CO2-to-HCOOH valorization performance over a multiscale optimized Cu-Bi cathodic architecture, delivering a formate Faradaic efficiency exceeding 95% within an aqueous electrolyzer, a C-basis HCOOH purity above 99.8% within a solid-state electrolyzer operated at 100 mA cm-2 for 200 h and an energy efficiency of 39.2%, as well as a tunable aqueous HCOOH concentration ranging from 2.7 to 92.1 wt%. Via a combined two-dimensional reaction phase diagram and finite element analysis, we highlight the role of local geometries of Cu and Bi in branching the adsorption strength for key intermediates like *COOH and *OCHO for CO2 reduction, while the crystal orbital Hamiltonian population analysis rationalizes the vital contribution from moderate binding strength of η²(O,O)-OCHO on Cu-doped Bi surface in promoting HCOOH electrosynthesis. The findings of this study not only shed light on the tuning knobs for precise CO2 valorization, but also provide a different research paradigm for advancing the activity and selectivity optimization in a broad range of electrosynthetic systems. Plasma homogeneity is of great importance for inertial confinement fusion because of its effects on laser absorption and subsequent implosion. Perturbations occurring near the ablation front and induced by hydrodynamic instabilities may influence the homogeneity of the underdense corona as the plasma expands. In this paper, perturbations in underdense plasmas produced from plastic targets at laser irradiances of ∼1015 W/cm² are observed, which were effectively suppressed by the application of a continuous phase plate. Taking account of the directions of the perturbations, the laser, and the target, the perturbations may be interpreted as the result of ablative Rayleigh–Taylor instability. Calculations of their linear growth rates are performed based either on radiation hydrodynamics simulations or on a fixed cutoff wavenumber corresponding to the measured spectra of the perturbations, and better agreement with the experimental results is found for the second approach. The difference between the two approaches is interpreted in terms of different ranges of the Froude number, which in the experiments was greater than unity, beyond the usual range at relatively low laser irradiance. Suprathermal electrons produced by laser–plasma interactions at 0.53-μm laser wavelength have been investigated using 19 electron spectrometers. The targets were 2- and 10-μm-thick Al foils, while the laser average intensities were 2 × 1013 and 7 × 1014W/cm2. A double temperature distribution was observed in the electron energy spectrum: the lower electron temperature was below 25 keV, whereas the higher was ~50 keV. The angular distribution of the total suprathermal electron energy approximately obeyed the Gaussian distribution, peaking along the k vector of the incident laser beam for perpendicular incidence. Furthermore, the conversion rate of laser energy into escaped suprathermal electron energy over the π sr solid angle was ∼10−4 at ∼1014 W/cm2, increasing almost linearly with the laser intensity. A hot-electron spectrometer array with two-dimensional distribution has been designed with a wide-angle range and high-energy resolution to measure the spatially resolved electron spectra for high-power-laser plasma interaction experiments. It consisted of 19 identical electron spectrometers set in three directions with an interval of 10°. Each electron spectrometer was designed with a uniform magnetic field to detect electrons in the range from 20 to 500 keV. The spectrometers were calibrated using electrons from an accelerator. In an experiment, the spatially resolved electron energy spectra, which approximately had a Maxwell distribution, were obtained from an aluminum foil target irradiated by a 0.53-µm laser pulse. Corona homogeneity and spectra of scattered light and hot electrons produced by laser-plasma instabilities inside laser-produced plastic, aluminum, and gold plasmas were investigated with and without the use of continuous phase plate (CPP) to the laser beam. Improvement of the corona homogeneity was observed for all three materials after applying CPP, while the inhibition of the intensity of backward-scattered light and the amount of emitted hot electrons was not always synchronous for different materials, which is interpreted as a result of the changes in thresholds of the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and the two-plasmon decay (TPD) instability before and after the application of CPP. By comparing the changes of SRS scattered light intensity with the amount of hot electrons in different kinetic energy ranges for all three target materials in our experiments, we conclude that SRS is more responsible for the diagnosed hot electrons between 50–150 keV, and those above 150 keV should be generated by TPD, which could be explained by the difference in phase velocity of electron plasma waves between SRS and TPD calculated from measured and simulated parameters of corona and laser-plasma instabilities.
