Abstract

This article presents an overview of the current evidence on the process of Neolithisation in the Dutch wetlands. Over the years, several models have been proposed with different perspectives on the timing and pace of the process: a long transition, an early short transition, and a late short transition. The applicability of any of these models is, of course, dependent of the evidence. In this article, we briefly discuss recently obtained data from the Netherlands on vegetation disturbance (woodland clearing), soil disturbance (tillage), cereal cultivation, animal husbandry, and the use of ceramics. The data discussed involve palynological, sedimentary, micromorphological, archaeobotanical, zooarchaeological, as well as lipid analyses. Hence, it is concluded that from the mid fifth millennium cal. BC onwards, various aspects of a more “Neolithic lifestyle” become apparent in the archaeological record, including cereal cultivation on a structural, but small-scale basis in wetland environments. However, despite the “gradual” tendency that can be observed, the evidence is as yet inconclusive with regard to any of the models, due to persisting limitations of the datasets, potential regional variability, and aspects of scale. A new project, the Emergence of Domestic Animals in the Netherlands (EDAN), aims at a better understanding of animal husbandry through aDNA and isotope analyses, within a framework of statistical chronological modelling. We expect this project to enhance the debate greatly.

Abstract

Umhlatuzana rockshelter is known for its continuous record of Middle and Later Stone Age lithic assemblages. This study presents multiproxy geoarchaeological data (micromorphology, X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy‐dispersive spectroscopy) to reconstruct the depositional and post‐depositional history of the site. Although the Stone Age deposits macroscopically appear homogeneous, micromorphological analysis reveals the existence of primary, unaltered depositional microlayering throughout the sequence. Sediments related to combustion activities on‐site are observed in both the Holocene and Pleistocene deposits. Post‐depositional geochemical alterations result in the formation of several phosphatic minerals that significantly affect the site's preservation conditions. One of those is vashegyite, a rare magnesium phosphate mineral related to acidic and moist sedimentary environments. Bioturbation features are prominent at the microscale, but sediment mixing does not seem to affect the vertical distribution of the artifacts. The observation of horizontal microlayering in both the Pleistocene and Holocene illuminates the dominant mechanism of sedimentation throughout the site's 70,000‐year occupational history. Abstract

Dutch ornament traditions in the Neolithic period focused on strung beads of amber, jet, stone and bone (e.g. Piena & Drenth 2001; Van Gijn 2006; Verschoof 2011; DeVriendt 2013, 118-121). These materials remained in use for ornaments during the Bronze Age (2000-800 BCE) in the Netherlands, as is clear from finds of amber (Butler 1990, 48-68), jet (Van der Wal & Vermeulen 2021, 64-65) and bone ornaments (e.g. Glasbergen 1954, 103; Verwers 1966, 29; Lanting et al. 2000, 82) in funerary contexts. In the course of the Bronze Age, settlement finds indicate that the selection of raw materials used for ornaments is expanded with for example beads of copper, tin and lead (e.g. Butler & Hielkema 2002, 541-544: Van der Sanden & van Os 2021, 46), albeit that ornaments in both bone (e.g. Van Dijk et al. 2002, 593-595) and amber (e.g. Vons 1970; Kleijne 2015, 67) continued to be crafted as well. In addition to new metals being incorporated into ornament traditions, other new materials are introduced as well. Amongst these, segmented beads of faience already get added to the repertoire around the 17th century BCE (cf. Van Heeringen 1978; Haverman & Sheridan 2006; Bulten & Boonstra 2013), presumably as part of the North Sea maritory exchange network (cf. Sheridan & Shortland 2004, esp. 369-270; Needham 2009). Presumably several centuries later, glass gets added as well. While glass (pyro)technology - used for ornaments - is extant in the Near East since final 3rd millennium BCE (e.g. Willvonseder 1937, 91; Nicholson & Henderson 2000; Shortland 2009; Henderson 2013, 3), it is produced in a regular and controlled manner in Egypt from the 16th century onwards (Shortland 2007, 261) with historic sources for both production (cf. Oppenheim et al. 1970) and consumption (in elite networks; Moran 1992, 235; 293; 347; 351-352; 355). 17. Magnetometer mapping of drowned prehistoric landscapes for Archaeological Heritage Management in the Netherlands.

Abstract

Coastal areas can contain a highly valuable archaeological record because of post‐glacial drowning of previously inhabited land surfaces. Such records are increasingly under threat because of a range of economic activities. Archaeological Heritage Management (AHM) is hampered by a lack of detailed data on the buried landscapes. This makes it difficult to fully assess and deflect threats to this record. Here, we present a novel way of using under water magnetometer surveys to map and characterize buried Mesolithic/Neolithic landforms in high detail. Magnetometer maps from the IJsselmeer area (Netherlands) show patterns of paired linear anomalies that resemble banks or levees that straddle channel‐like features. Sub‐bottom profile transects and sediment core analyses confirm that the observed linear features are Mesolithic and Neolithic submerged buried channel and bank/levee systems that connect to known onshore buried channel systems from that age. Although the origin of the magnetic signal is still subject of study, the observed patterns clearly indicate areas or geomorphological phenomena of high archaeological potential, and make it possible to take measures for protection and research. Überregionale Verbindungen und lokale Identitäten Dieser Artikel diskutiert die Herstellung, den Austausch und die gesellschaftliche Funktion von späteisenzeitlichen Glasarmringen in West- und Mitteleuropa. Jüngere Regionalstudien haben überzeugende Belege für eine dezentrale Produktion von Glasarmringen in den Oppida und in offenen Siedlungen erbracht. Trotzdem lassen erste chemische Untersuchungen vermuten, dass das gesamte Rohglas aus dem Mittelmeerraum importiert wurde. Hier werden die Ergebnisse eines umfangreichen chemischen Analyseprojektes vom Niederrhein vorgestellt und diskutiert. Zusammen mit bereits publizierten Glasanalysen aus anderen Regionen der Latènekultur kann gefolgert werden, dass die Glasarmringe aus Sodaglas, das aus dem östlichen Mittelmeergebiet stammt, hergestellt wurden. Deshalb schlagen wir ein Modell von importiertem aufbereiteten Rohglas vor, aus dem in lokalen Werkstätten die Endprodukte gefertigt wurden. Weiter können zwei interessante kulturelle Schlüsse aus diesen neuen Ergebnissen gezogen werden. Zum einen ist zu vermuten, dass der umfangreiche Rohglasimport aus dem Mittelmeergebiet und der Zustrom von italischem Wein und den damit zusammenhängenden Bronzegefäßen über getrennte und unterschiedlich organisierte Austauschsysteme liefen. Zum anderen ist es überraschend, dass der exotische Ursprung des Rohglases nicht verhinderte, dass Glasschmuck ein sehr gewöhnliches Hilfsmittel beim Entstehen von einer Reihe lokaler Identitäten von Personen und Gruppen wurde, bei der der Schwerpunkt eher auf Gemeinsamkeit als auf elitärer Abgrenzung liegt., Archäologisches Korrespondenzblatt, Bd. 44 Nr. 2 (2014): Archäologisches Korrespondenzblatt

Abstract

The change from hunter-gatherer to agriculture-based subsistence is, and it has been, a major theoretical and research topic in archaeology. The project “Finding suitable grounds” studies the setting and speed of adoption of crop cultivation in the lowlands of the Netherlands during the Mesolithic to Neolithic transition. The aim of the project is to understand the activities related to human subsistence in the fluvial landscapes of the Flevoland area and the Rhine-Meuse delta during the time period between 6000 BC and 4000 cal. yr. BC. Instead of a classical approach focusing on settlements, our research is bringing the wider surroundings and the landscape management to the forefront. An important issue is the suitability of the now buried and submerged fluvial landscapes for early crop cultivation. Besides high-precision 14 C dating and soil micromorphology, multiple palaeobotanical proxies (macro-remains, phytoliths, charred particles of herbaceous tissues and pollen) are going to be used. The purpose of this multi-proxy approach is to define the general vegetation characteristics and diversity within the landscape, changes in vegetation cover and which are of due to human management, indications for crop cultivation, and exploring the possibility of intensification and wider dispersal of crop cultivation during this time. This set of off-site data will provide new understanding of landscape changes and of the human-environment relationship in the Dutch lowlands since the onset of the Neolithic.

Abstract

In the Netherlands, several proxies of climate change during the Last Glacial-Interglacial Transition (LGIT) (c. 14,700 to 11,700 b2k) have been investigated in detail over the last few decades. The present paper presents two tree-ring chronologies LETR-A (n = 16, timespan 106 rings) and LETR-B (n = 24, timespan 201 rings) from in situ subfossil pine remains (Pinus sylvestris) discovered at Leusden-Den Treek in the Netherlands that date from the Bølling-Allerød interstadial (GI-1). Using a multiproxy approach (both abiotic and biotic), it was possible to study local woodland development in detail as part of long-term environmental change. Moreover, the trees opened up possibilities for dendrochronological and dendroclimatological research. The tree-ring series show the occurrence of two successive phases of pine woodland development, which were 14C dated with high precision and calibrated using the recent IntCal20 14C calibration curve: 13,450–13,396 to 13,370–13,316 calBP (series LETR-A) and 12,952–12,937 to 12,754–12,739 calBP (series LETR-B). At the north-western boundary of its ecotone, Pinus was highly sensitive to climate change during the latter part of GI-1 and the transition to GS-1. The inability to set fruit and the disappearance of the pine woodland within decades before and after c. 12,745 calBP is interpreted as the vegetational response to abrupt climate deterioration at the start of the Younger Dryas (12,807 ± 12 cal BP).

Abstract

Making and trading: An analysis of Merovingian beads from the Sittard-Kemperkoul burial ground. Chemical analyses and micro-CT scanning were used to analyse a set of c. 725 glass beads from a single Merovingian burial (number 11) in the Sittard-Kemperkoul burial ground (Sittard-Geleen, province of Limburg). Chemical analyses of the small, opaque, yellow beads that make up the majority of the collection showed that they were, in fact, not made of glass. Rather, they were made by fusing a lead-tin-based yellow colourant with quartz. For black beads, iron was added to this mixture. The other beads were made from glass – probably of re-used Roman origin – with various colourants. The micro-CT scans provided an unrivalled image of the various manufacturing techniques that were used to make the more complex, polychrome beads.

Abstract

This deliverable reports about Task 8.2 Feasibility studies, which addresses the viability and manner of eventually incorporating new services, ensuring maximum efficiency for each interested beneficiary community. This is aims at preparing E-RIHS for the delicate implementation phase of E-RIHS, tackling any potential flaws in its services. The feasibility studies concern different potential new services identified. Such potential new services address the common needs and integration of multiple HS communities. In this task small feasibility studies will address the viability and manner of eventually incorporating these services, ensuring maximum efficiency for each interested beneficiary community. This prepares E-RIHS for the delicate implementation of E-RIHS, tackling any potential flaws in its services. All the subtasks listed below concern interoperability and cross-discipline applicability, mostly based on current best practices and involve no additional research. Subtask 8.2.1 – Multilevel analysis: Identification, Digitisation and Reconstruction. Subtask leader: FORTH – Participants: ATOMKI(EK); FORTH(OF_ADC); CENIEH; CNRS(IPANEMA); IPCHS; UCL(NTU) This multidisciplinary Paleoanthropological and Bioarchaeological feasibility study concerned the design of an integrated pipeline involving different analytical techniques (e.g. Isotope, aDNA, Proteomics, Tomography, etc.) and their combination with advanced IT methods (e.g. 3D modelling) and the management of a combined repository. Subtask 8.2.2 – Universal chronology service. Subtask leader: CENIEH – Participants: ATOMKI; CNR(+INFN); CNRS; UCL(+SUERC) The subject of the subtask concerns a feasibility study on the creation of a universal chronology service, comprising all relevant techniques used to date heritage (e.g. C14, luminescence, paleomagnetism). A ‘one door to knock on’ service helping to choose the most appropriate technique, laboratory and sampling. Users include museums, government and heritage-related organizations, art historians, archaeologists. A joint research program will be designed on the technique applicability, protocol homogenisation, training, etc. Subtask 8.2.3 – Workflow in Digital Archaeology and Analytical Methods. Subtask leader: CYI Participants: ATOMKI(HNM); CENIEH; DAI; DP; IAA; KIK-IRPA; UCL(NTU) The feasibility study concerned the analysis and the design of the pipeline from field data documentation to site/artefact analysis, and how this process is recorded, performed and shared in a common knowledge repository while integrating analytical and digital methods. 31. Arguments in favour of an anthropogenic origin of Mesolithic pit hearths. A reply to Crombé and Langohr (2020)

Abstract

In response to the comment by Crombé and Langohr (2020) on our micromorphological study of Mesolithic pit hearths, we argue that these features are most likely anthropogenic in origin, and that it is therefore unlikely that they are the remains of burned ant nests. Arguments for an anthropogenic origin centre around (1) their regional and temporal distribution, (2) their spatial distribution within archaeological sites, (3) their charcoal spectrum and (4) the presence of cultural remains in the pits. We argue that the absence of fire-related features and apparent discrepancies in dating can be attributed to site-formation and taphonomic processes. Finally, we indicate that, due to a lack of actual observations of the subsurface morphology of burned ant nests, it is impossible to make a valid comparison. Based on the existing literature on ant nests fires, we come to a different model of this morphology than do Crombé and Langohr (2020). We conclude that these pit hearths form an important component of the Mesolithic archaeological record and that new research into their formation and their use may shed more light on their origin and purpose.

Abstract

Het was toeval. De archeologische begeleiding van de uitbreiding van het Tilburgse sportcomplex Spoordijk had slechts enkele sporen en vondsten uit de ijzertijd opgeleverd en was afgesloten. Frans van Nuenen, vrijwilliger in de archeologie, inspecteerde na afloop van de werkzaamheden echter nog eenmaal het terrein en vond in het talud van een nieuwe waterpartij een grote, zwarte vlek. De gemeente pakte de waarneming meteen op en liet een kleinschalige opgraving uitvoeren om de kuil te documenteren en de vondsten te bergen (afbeelding 1). Het bleek om een flinke kuil te gaan, vol met houtskool en prehistorisch aardewerk. Een 14C-datering van verkoolde zaden maakt duidelijk dat de kuil stamt uit de tweede helft van de vijfde eeuw voor Chr. Vorm en versiering van het aardewerk uit de kuil onderstrepen deze datering in de midden-ijzertijd. Tussen het vondstmateriaal werd een aantal opvallende en onbekende voorwerpen aangetroffen: complete en gebroken, eivormige, holle objecten met een klein gat in de punt en een verglaasde buitenkant. Wat zijn dit?
