Integrating the brain structural and functional connectivity features is of great significance in both exploring brain science and analyzing cognitive impairment clinically. However, it remains a challenge to effectively fuse structural and functional features in exploring the complex brain network. In this paper, a novel brain structure-function fusing-representation learning (BSFL) model is proposed to effectively learn fused representation from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) analysis. Specifically, the decomposition-fusion framework is developed to first decompose the feature space into the union of the uniform and unique spaces for each modality, and then adaptively fuse the decomposed features to learn MCI-related representation. Moreover, a knowledge-aware transformer module is designed to automatically capture local and global connectivity features throughout the brain. Also, a uniform-unique contrastive loss is further devised to make the decomposition more effective and enhance the complementarity of structural and functional features. The extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed model achieves better performance than other competitive methods in predicting and analyzing MCI. More importantly, the proposed model could be a potential tool for reconstructing unified brain networks and predicting abnormal connections during the degenerative processes in MCI.

Abstract Digital cartoon production requires extensive manual labor to colorize sketches with visually pleasant color composition and color shading. During colorization, the artist usually takes an existing cartoon image as color guidance, particularly when colorizing related characters or an animation sequence. Reference-guided colorization is more intuitive than colorization with other hints, such as color points or scribbles, or text-based hints. Unfortunately, reference-guided colorization is challenging since the style of the colorized image should match the style of the reference image in terms of both global color composition and local color shading. In this paper, we propose a novel learning-based framework which colorizes a sketch based on a color style feature extracted from a reference color image. Our framework contains a color style extractor to extract the color feature from a color image, a colorization network to generate multi-scale output images by combining a sketch and a color feature, and a multi-scale discriminator to improve the reality of the output image. Extensive qualitative and quantitative evaluations show that our method outperforms existing methods, providing both superior visual quality and style reference consistency in the task of reference-based colorization.

Abstract Texture synthesis is widely used for modeling the appearance of virtual objects. However, traditional texture synthesis techniques emphasize creation of optimal target textures, and pay insufficient attention to choice of suitable input texture exemplars. Currently, obtaining texture exemplars from natural images is a labor intensive task for the artists, requiring careful photography and significant postprocessing. In this paper, we present an automatic texture exemplar extraction method based on global and local textureness measures. To improve the efficiency of dominant texture identification, we first perform Poisson disk sampling to randomly and uniformly crop patches from a natural image. For global textureness assessment, we use a GIST descriptor to distinguish textured patches from non-textured patches, in conjunction with SVM prediction. To identify real texture exemplars consisting solely of the dominant texture, we further measure the local textureness of a patch by extracting and matching the local structure (using binary Gabor pattern (BGP)) and dominant color features (using color histograms) between a patch and its sub-regions. Finally, we obtain optimal texture exemplars by scoring and ranking extracted patches using these global and local textureness measures. We evaluate our method on a variety of images with different kinds of textures. A convincing visual comparison with textures manually selected by an artist and a statistical study demonstrate its effectiveness.

In this paper, a novel analog gamma correction scheme with a logarithmic image sensor dedicated to minimize the quantization noise of the high dynamic applications is presented. The proposed implementation exploits a non-linear voltage-controlled-oscillator (VCO) based analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to perform the gamma correction during the analog-to-digital conversion. As a result, the quantization noise does not increase while the same high dynamic range of logarithmic image sensor is preserved. Moreover, by combining the gamma correction with the analog-to-digital conversion, the silicon area and overall power consumption can be greatly reduced. The proposed gamma correction scheme is validated by the reported simulation results and the experimental results measured for our designed test structure, which is fabricated with 0.35 μm standard complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process.

Single-image blind deblurring for imaging sensors in the Internet of Things (IoT) is a challenging ill-conditioned inverse problem, which requires regularization techniques to stabilize the image restoration process. The purpose is to recover the underlying blur kernel and latent sharp image from only one blurred image. Under many degraded imaging conditions, the blur kernel could be considered not only spatially sparse, but also piecewise smooth with the support of a continuous curve. By taking advantage of the hybrid sparse properties of the blur kernel, a hybrid regularization method is proposed in this paper to robustly and accurately estimate the blur kernel. The effectiveness of the proposed blur kernel estimation method is enhanced by incorporating both the L 1 -norm of kernel intensity and the squared L 2 -norm of the intensity derivative. Once the accurate estimation of the blur kernel is obtained, the original blind deblurring can be simplified to the direct deconvolution of blurred images. To guarantee robust non-blind deconvolution, a variational image restoration model is presented based on the L 1 -norm data-fidelity term and the total generalized variation (TGV) regularizer of second-order. All non-smooth optimization problems related to blur kernel estimation and non-blind deconvolution are effectively handled by using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)-based numerical methods. Comprehensive experiments on both synthetic and realistic datasets have been implemented to compare the proposed method with several state-of-the-art methods. The experimental comparisons have illustrated the satisfactory imaging performance of the proposed method in terms of quantitative and qualitative evaluations.
