Human activities for exploitation and utilization of coastal zones have transformed coastline morphology and severely changed regional flow fields, underwater topography, and sediment distribution in the sea. In this study, single-beam bathymetry coupled with sediment sampling and analysis was carried out to ascertain submarine topography, geomorphology and sediment distribution patterns and explore sediment provenance in Qinzhou Bay, China. The results show the following. 1) The underwater topography in Qinzhou Bay is complex and variable, with water depths in the range of 0–20 m. It can be divided into four underwater topographic zones: the central (outer Qinzhou Bay), eastern (Sanniang Bay), western (east of Fangcheng Port), and southern (outside of the bay) parts. 2) Based on geomorphological features, the study area comprises four major submarine geomorphological units (i.e., tide-dominated delta, tidal sand ridge group, tidal scour troughs, and underwater slope) and two intertidal geomorphological units (i.e., tidal flat and abrasion platforms). 3) Sandy sediments are widely present in Qinzhou Bay, accounting for 70% of the total sediments. From the mouth of the Maowei Sea to the offshore, the sediments gradually become coarser, shifting from sandy mud to muddy sand, and then to fine sand and medium–coarse sand. The detrital minerals contained in the sediments mainly consist of quartz, feldspar, debris, ilmenite, leucosphenite, and tourmaline, whereas the clay minerals are dominated by kaolinite, followed by illite and smectite. The sediment provenance is mainly terrigenous input from near-source rivers. With sea reclamation and dam construction, outer Qinzhou Bay has experienced enormous morphological variation of its coastline. Together with the channel effect where the velocity of ebb tide is greater than that of flood tide, the underwater topography is characterized by increased scale and height difference of troughs and ridges as well as enhanced offshore deposition.

Data from three repeated multi-beam echo-sounder surveys of pre-storm, post-storm, and one year after the storm were used to study the response of sand waves in the Taiwan Shoal to the tropical storm, Talim. The measurements showed significant decreases in wave height of giant sand waves between post-storm and pre-storm, and moderate increases in one year period after the storm. The maximum decrease in wave height is more than 2 m and the averaged decrease is 1.2 m along the measured profile. The linear regression analysis shows an increasing trend of wave height changes from northwest to southeast along the profile. The uneven evolution pattern was possibly caused by the asymmetry of the currents induced by the cyclone winds. The analysis based on the Morlet wavelet function showed that the storm smeared out small-scale sand waves and eroded the giant sand wave crests, and recovery of bedforms after the storm. Two-dimensional features of storm effects were analyzed using the imagery of a Digital Terrain Model processed in a 2D survey area for pre-storm, post-storm and one year after the storm. The analysis revealed sand wave migration processes during the storm and the growing-back feature of the eroded wave crests after the storm.

The sediment sources of the Yangtze Shoal were traced by analysing surface and core sediment particle size, detrital and clay minerals, carbon and nitrogen isotopes, and radioisotope dating. In the estuary, the sediments are dominated by silty clay, high stable mineral, and extremely high illite/chlorite. Stable organic carbon isotopes (δ13C-TOC) indicated a marine-dominated mixture. On the shoal, the sediments are mainly composed of fine sand, high unstable mineral. The δ13C-TOC indicated predominantly marine sedimentation. The average TOC of core sediments was ~0.26%, and the average TN was ~0.05%. The TOC/TN was 5.4–7.8, the δ13C-TOC was −19.8 to −22.1‰, and the age of the sediments spanned the last ~10.8 ka (Holocene). The sediments and provenance of the Yangtze Shoal have been controlled by the East Asian monsoon, sea level change, riverine sediment flux and ocean circulation. The intervals 8.3–6.3 ka and 3.8–1.5 ka, are characterized by Yangtze River sources, whereas 6.3–3.8 ka and 1.5–0.8 ka, are characterized by a source mixture with Yellow River input. Tracing the multiple sources effectively confirms the hypothesis that the southern Yangtze Shoal was a delta formed by combined sedimentation from the Yangtze River and Yellow River during times of low sea level.

A DTM map of the study area in the Taiwan Shoal was drawn based on precise and high-density data acquired in a field survey by a multi-beam sounding system (R2Sonic2024). We identified sand waves in the study area at water depths of 13.89–49.12 m; the main sand waves had heights of 5–25 m, lengths of 0.1–2.0 km, and crest lines 0.1–6.5 km long. The spatial distribution of the sand waves on the seabed is dense in the north and sparse in the south and the directions range between 50°–80° and 90°–135°. Between the main sand waves, secondary sand waves develop with heights of 0.1–5.0 m and lengths of 10–100 m, which are difficult to detect by satellite remote sensing. By comparing the evolution structures of the secondary and main sand waves, we identified three evolution modes of the secondary sand waves: parallel, oblique, and divergent modes according to the relative crest directions. Suitable water depth, reciprocating current speeds between 40 and 100 cm/s, and abundant sediment supply create favorable conditions for the formation of linear sand waves. Comparing the DTM maps and profiles of the June 2012 and June 2013 surveys of the same area, we found that the shape and morphology of the sand waves remained mostly unchanged under normal hydrodynamic conditions.

A series of port constructions and large-scale reclamation projects have been extensively carried out in Quanzhou Bay to pursue social and economic benefits. These projects have changed the natural topographical and morphological evolution since 1970. In this research, from comparison of topographical and morphological characteristics of the study area in 2008, 1972 and 1934, the obvious differences between two evolution stages (1934–1972 and 1972–2008) were analyzed, and the impact of coastal engineering constructions on the evolution of topography and morphology was evaluated quantitatively. The results show that evolution before the 1970s was characterized as a stable whole with local erosion in the channel and slow aggradation of the shoal and that the morphology was dominated by natural processes, as there was little coastal engineering construction before 1970. Since the 1970s, because of a series of engineering projects such as those reclaiming land and constructing ports, the bay has been in a stage of continuous silting, characterized by the channel narrowing and shrinking and shoal silting and expanding, which may result in the abandonment of ports around the bay and endanger the salt field, aquaculture and other agriculture. Potential solutions for the management of the coastal zone of Quanzhou Bay and other similar bays by state and local agencies are suggested, such as calling for the attention of the state and local government, strengthening coastal zone management, scientific planning and reasonable exploitation, and in particular, changing the utilization of the sea area.
