Abstract Background The hard clam (Mercenaria mercenaria), a marine bivalve distributed along the U.S. eastern seaboard, supports a significant shellfish industry. Overharvest in the 1970s and 1980s led to a reduction in landings. While the transition of industry from wild harvest to aquaculture since that time has enhanced production, it has also exacerbated challenges such as disease outbreaks. In this study, we developed and validated a 66K SNP array designed to advance genetic studies and improve breeding programs in the hard clam, focusing particularly on the development of markers that could be useful in understanding disease resistance and environmental adaptability. Results Whole-genome resequencing of 84 individual clam samples and 277 pooled clam libraries yielded over 305 million SNPs, which were filtered down to a set of 370,456 SNPs that were used as input for the design of a 66K SNP array. This medium-density array features 66,543 probes targeting coding and non-coding regions, including 70 mitochondrial SNPs, to capture the extensive genetic diversity within the species. The SNPs were distributed evenly throughout the clam genome, with an average interval of 25,641 bp between SNPs. The array incorporates markers for detecting the clam pathogen Mucochytrium quahogii (formerly QPX), enhancing its utility in disease management. Performance evaluation on 1,904 samples demonstrated a 72.7% pass rate with stringent quality control. Concordance testing affirmed the array's repeatability, with an average agreement of allele calls of 99.64% across multiple tissue types, highlighting its reliability. The tissue-specific analysis demonstrated that some tissue types yield better genotyping results than others. Importantly, the array, including its embedded mitochondrial markers, effectively elucidated complex genetic relationships across different clam groups, both wild populations and aquacultured stocks, showcasing its utility for detailed population genetics studies. Conclusions The 66K SNP array is a powerful and robust genotyping tool that offers unprecedented insights into the species’ genomic architecture and population dynamics and that can greatly facilitate hard clam selective breeding. It represents an important resource that has the potential to transform clam aquaculture, thereby promoting industry sustainability and ecological and economic resilience.

Utilizing multi-band and multi-carrier techniques enhances throughput and capacity in Long-Term Evolution (LTE)-Advanced and 5G New Radio (NR) mobile networks. However, these techniques introduce Passive Inter-Modulation (PIM) interference in Frequency-Division Duplexing (FDD) systems. In this paper, a novel multi-band Wiener-Hammerstein model is presented to digitally reconstruct PIM interference signals, thereby achieving effective PIM Cancellation (PIMC) in multi-band scenarios. In the model, transmitted signals are independently processed to simulate Inter-Modulation Distortions (IMDs) and Cross-Modulation Distortions (CMDs). Furthermore, the Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter, basis function generation, and B-spline function are applied for precise PIM product estimation and generation in multi-band scenarios. Simulations involving 4 carrier components from diverse NR frequency bands at varying transmitting powers validate the feasibility of the model for multi-band PIMC, achieving up to 19 dB in PIMC performance. Compared to other models, this approach offers superior PIMC performance, exceeding them by more than 5 dB in high transmitting power scenarios. Additionally, its lower sampling rate requirement reduces the hardware complexity associated with implementing multi-band PIMC.

Abstract Background The larval zebrafish tail fin can completely regenerate in 3 days post amputation. mTOR, the main regulator of cell growth and metabolism, plays an essential role in regeneration. Lots of studies have documented the role of mTOR in regeneration. However, the mechanisms involved are still not fully elucidated. Materials and results This study aimed to explore the role and mechanism of mTOR in the regeneration of larval zebrafish tail fins. Initially, the spatial and temporal expression of mTOR signaling in the larval fin was examined, revealing its activation following tail fin amputation. Subsequently, a mTOR knockout (mTOR-KO) zebrafish line was created using CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology. The investigation demonstrated that mTOR depletion diminished the proliferative capacity of epithelial and mesenchymal cells during fin regeneration, with no discernible impact on cell apoptosis. Insight from SMART-seq analysis uncovered alterations in the cell cycle, mitochondrial functions and metabolic pathways when mTOR signaling was suppressed during fin regeneration. Furthermore, mTOR was confirmed to enhance mitochondrial functions and Ca2 + activation following fin amputation. These findings suggest a potential role for mTOR in promoting mitochondrial fission to facilitate tail fin regeneration. Conclusion In summary, our results demonstrated that mTOR played a key role in larval zebrafish tail fin regeneration, via promoting mitochondrial fission and proliferation of blastema cells.

An analysis of genome-wide gene expression profiles during floral organ development can provide important clues about the molecular basis of gene functions and developmental processes. In this study, we analyzed the transcriptome data of 36 samples obtained during floral organ development from pepper ‘6421’ and detected 30 016 genes that were expressed in at least one sample. K-means clustering analysis was used to classify the data into 16 clusters based on the similarities between the dynamic expression profiles of genes. Of these, 15 clusters exhibited notable up-regulation or down-regulation trends in different developmental stages or tissues of floral organs. We identified transcription factors expressed at the early, medium, and late stages of bud development (F1, F5, F9). Transcription factor families such as AP2-ERF, MADS-box, MYB, bHLH, and NAC showed significant levels of enrichment. In comparison with genes expressed in vegetative tissues at different stages, certain genes were specifically up-regulated during flower development; among these, the number of genes specifically up-regulated during the stamen (Sta10) and bud tetrad development (F4) stages was the highest. Through extensive studies of the ABCDE model of flower development in Arabidopsis, we identified 17 ABCDE model candidate genes in pepper, most of which were up-regulated at specific stages of flower bud development. The expression data provided in this study is the most comprehensive dataset available for pepper to date and will serve as a resource for identifying the functions of many specific genes involved in flower development in pepper and other Solanaceae plants.

The logic gate components based on electromagnetic waves are crucial for building a digital computing platform with batch computing and low-cost energy consumption requirements. However, most of the reported logic gates have only one computational channel and have a single function. In order to improve the channel capacity and versatility of logic gates, we design a simple and compact graphene metasurface for dual channel parallel computing, with each channel's function being switchable across all types of logic functions. In the design, we combine the advantages of reconfigurable metasurfaces and polarization sensitive metasurfaces. Based on the polarization sensitive characteristics, we integrate two polarization logic gates into a single device. These two polarization logic gates can work simultaneously, and the crosstalk between them is 0. Based on the reconfigurable feature, the functions of both logic gates can be freely selected from NOT, AND, NAND, OR, NOR, XOR and XNOR. So, this component can achieve simultaneous operation of any two logical functions, and there are 49 combinations available. Our design philosophy provides inspiration for achieving ultra fast and high-density integrated signal processing.

Abstract Background Higher dietary quality, including increased vegetable consumption, was associated with a reduced risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, specific vegetable consumption in the development of MetS remains obscure. Our study aimed to investigate the correlation between starchy and non-starchy vegetables and MetS. Methods Secondary data analysis from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 1999–2018). MetS was defined by National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult treatment Panel III (NCEP ATPIII) and dietary consumption was assessed by trained staff using two 24-h diet recall methods. Weighted logistic regression analysis was carried out to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression were performed to further investigate specific vegetable subtypes and MetS. Results This research enrolled 24,646 individuals (11,725 females and 12,921 males), with an average age of 45.84 ± 0.23 years. Approximately 15,828(64.22%) participants were defined to be with non-MetS and 8818(35.78%) were with MetS. Both total starchy vegetables and potatoes were associated with increased MetS risk, with the corresponding OR per standard deviation (SD) (95%CI, p-trend) being 1.06(1.02–1.11, p-trend = 0.028) and 1.08(1.04–1.13, p-trend = 0.011), respectively. However, an inverse correlation was found between dark-green vegetables and MetS, and the OR per SD (95%CI, p-trend) was 0.93(0.90–0.97, p-trend = 0.010). Abstract Forkhead box protein P1 (FoxP1) is essential for cardiac development and the regulation of neovascularization, but its potential for cardiac angiogenesis has not been explored. This study aims to investigate the angiogenic role of FoxP1 in a rat model of myocardial infarction (MI). Adult male rats were subjected to MI, and Foxp1 was knocked down with lentivirus FoxP1 siRNA. Endothelial cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and cardiac function were also assessed. Cell scratch assay and tubule formation analysis were used to detect the migration ability and tube formation ability of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Compared with that in the sham group, results showed that the expression of FoxP1 was significantly increased in the MI group. Foxp1 knockdown decreases FoxP1 expression, reduces angiogenesis, and increases collagen deposition. When Foxp1 was knocked down in HUVECs using FoxP1 siRNA lentivirus, cell proliferation, migration, and tube formation abilities decreased significantly. Our study showed that FoxP1 elicits pleiotropic beneficial actions on angiogenesis in the post-MI heart by promoting the proliferation of endothelial cells. FoxP1 should be considered a candidate for therapeutic cardiac angiogenesis.

Summary: Huddling behavior, a typical social interaction among animals, has the benefits of obtaining social support and adapting environment. Huddling behavior is determined by social (social hierarchy), environmental factors (stress events), and the neuroendocrine system. Nevertheless, the huddling behavior of different social hierarchies and the underlying mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. In the present study, acute 2-methyl-2-thiazoline (2 MT) can induce huddling behavior and significantly increase serum levels of testosterone (T) in mice; and the increased T level was positively correlated with huddling behavior. Further, the T treatment significantly increased the huddling behavior in mice under 2 MT exposure condition. More interestingly, T can quickly promote dominant individuals to occupy safe positions when huddling together under predator odor. Collectively, T can rapidly regulate the individual’s adaptive response to threats in a social rank-dependent manner, which provides a new perspective for the in-depth study of the influencing factors and underlying mechanisms of huddling behavior.

Abstract Background Catalases (CATs) break down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen to prevent cellular oxidative damage, and play key roles in the development, biotic and abiotic stresses of plants. However, the evolutionary relationships of the plant CAT gene family have not been systematically reported. Results Here, we conducted genome-wide comparative, phylogenetic, and structural analyses of CAT orthologs from 29 out of 31 representative green lineage species to characterize the evolution and functional diversity of CATs. We found that CAT genes in land plants were derived from core chlorophytes and detected a lineage-specific loss of CAT genes in Fabaceae, suggesting that the CAT genes in this group possess divergent functions. All CAT genes were split into three major groups (group α, β1, and β2) based on the phylogeny. CAT genes were transferred from bacteria to core chlorophytes and charophytes by lateral gene transfer, and this led to the independent evolution of two types of CAT genes: α and β types. Ten common motifs were detected in both α and β groups, and β CAT genes had five unique motifs, respectively. The findings of our study are inconsistent with two previous hypotheses proposing that (i) new CAT genes are acquired through intron loss and that (ii) the Cys-343 residue is highly conserved in plants. We found that new CAT genes in most higher plants were produced through intron acquisition and that the Cys-343 residue was only present in monocots, Brassicaceae and Pp_CatX7 in P. patens, which indicates the functional specificity of the CATs in these three lineages. Finally, our finding that CAT genes show high overall sequence identity but that individual CAT genes showed developmental stage and organ-specific expression patterns suggests that CAT genes have functionally diverged independently. Conclusions Overall, our analyses of the CAT gene family provide new insights into their evolution and functional diversification in green lineage species.

The goal of this study was to develop a rapid assessment of microalgal concentration using a turbidity meter to serve commercial shellfish hatcheries for feeding shellfish larvae and broodstock. We used four commonly used algal species, Tetraselmis suecica, Isochrysis galbana, Chaetoceros calcitrans, and Chaetoceros gracilis, generating serial dilutions of each and measuring cell concentrations and turbidity of each sample. We identified linear correlations between cell concentration and turbidity and established standard equations between cell concentration and turbidity for each species. We sampled and quantified algae from a shellfish hatchery using these equations and compared hemocytometer counts. No differences were found (P ≥ 0.174), indicating the accuracy of the equations. We expect that this method can provide a quick, accurate, easy method for shellfish hatcheries to quantify algal concentration and avoid either over- or underfeeding larvae and broodstock.

Background: The effects of climatic conditions on the prevalence of individual influenza (sub)types are not well understood in the subtropics. This study aims to evaluate the associations between meteorological factors and seasonal epidemics of A(H3N2), A(H1N1)pdm09, and type B influenza viruses, as well as to estimate the interactions between climatic variables in a subtropical basin region. Methods: The seasonality of influenza (sub)types during 2010–2019 were characterized in Chengdu Plain Economic Zone, a densely populated and highly humid plain area in Sichuan Basin in subtropical Southwest China. Generalized additive models were adopted to assess the independent exposure-response relationship between meteorological variables and influenza prevalence. The interactions of meteorological variables were further estimated using bivariate response surface models and strata models. Results: Our analyses indicated that the temperature, relative humidity, and absolute humidity have exhibited a major influence on influenza infection in Chengdu Plain Economic Zone. Low temperature was shown to promote the prevalence of A(H1N1)pdm09 and type B in winter-spring days at all levels of relative humidity. High risk of A(H3N2) infections was observed at low temperature or high temperature, and at higher relative humidity. Moreover, absolute humidity decreased or increased influenza (sub)type infections within different ranges. Conclusions: This study found different nonlinear relationships between meteorological factors and the seasonality of influenza (sub)types, as well as significant interactive effects between climatic variables, contributing to the research on the climate drivers of influenza prevalence in warm-humid basin regions in the subtropics.

Genes containing GTP_EFTU domain mainly express elongation factors (EF), Small GTPases, and GTP-binding proteins, which are closely related to protein synthesis, extension and ATP synthesis. In this study, we identified 39 genes containing GTP_EFTU domains from peppers. The evolutionary trees constructed from capsicum, Arabidopsis, rice, and tomato are mainly divided into 7 subfamilies. Using PacBio (Pacific Biosciences) sequencing and assembly data, we extracted these 39 gene sequences, from which 25 genes had alternative splicing. Particularly, the Capana08g000545 had 16 alternative splicing processes. Accordingly, we performed promoter sequence analysis, subcellular location prediction, the expression analysis of different tissues and periods, and also the GO (Gene ontology) analysis of co-expressed genes. Lastly we did the qRT-PCR analysis in 5 stages of pepper fruit development. These analyses revealed important structural and functional information for the identified 39 genes that contain GTP_EFTU domains, providing important references for further follow-up experiments to verify the genes function on plants or their unique roles in peppers.

BackgroundIn recent years, peri-organ fat has emerged as a diagnostic and therapeutic target in metabolic diseases, including diabetes mellitus. Here, we performed a comprehensive analysis of epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) transcriptome expression differences between diabetic and non-diabetic participants and explored the possible mechanisms using various bioinformatic tools.MethodsRNA-seq datasets GSE108971 and GSE179455 for EAT between diabetic and non-diabetic patients were obtained from the public functional genomics database Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified using the R package DESeq2, then Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment were analyzed. Next, a PPI (protein–protein interaction) network was constructed, and hub genes were mined using STRING and Cytoscape. Additionally, CIBERSORT was used to analyze the immune cell infiltration, and key transcription factors were predicted based on ChEA3.ResultsBy comparing EAT samples between diabetic and non-diabetic patients, a total of 238 DEGs were identified, including 161 upregulated genes and 77 downregulated genes. A total of 10 genes (IL-1β, CD274, PDCD1, ITGAX, PRDM1, LAG3, TNFRSF18, CCL20, IL1RN, and SPP1) were selected as hub genes. GO and KEGG analysis showed that DEGs were mainly enriched in the inflammatory response and cytokine activity. Immune cell infiltration analysis indicated that macrophage M2 and T cells CD4 memory resting accounted for the largest proportion of these immune cells. CSRNP1, RELB, NFKB2, SNAI1, and FOSB were detected as potential transcription factors.ConclusionComprehensive bioinformatic analysis was used to compare the difference in EAT between diabetic and non-diabetic patients. Several hub genes, transcription factors, and immune cell infiltration were identified. Diabetic EAT is significantly different in the inflammatory response and cytokine activity. These findings may provide new targets for the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes, as well as reduce potential cardiovascular complications in diabetic patients through EAT modification.

The mechanism of resistance of plants to cold temperatures is very complicated, and the molecular mechanism and related gene network in pepper are largely unknown. Here, during cold treatment, we used cluster analysis (k-means) to classify all expressed genes into 15 clusters, 3,680 and 2,405 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were observed in the leaf and root, respectively. The DEGs associated with certain important basic metabolic processes, oxidoreductase activity, and overall membrane compositions were most significantly enriched. In addition, based on the homologous sequence alignment of Arabidopsis genes, we identified 14 positive and negative regulators of the ICE-CBF-COR module in pepper, including CBF and ICE, and compared their levels in different data sets. The correlation matrix constructed based on the expression patterns of whole pepper genes in leaves and roots after exposure to cold stress showed the correlation between 14 ICE-CBF-COR signaling module genes, and provided insight into the relationship between these genes in pepper. These findings not only provide valuable resources for research on cold tolerance, but also lay the foundation for the genetic modification of cold stress regulators, which would help us achieve improved crop tolerance. To our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate the relationship between positive and negative regulators related to the ICE-CBF-COR module, which is of great significance to the study of low-temperature adaptive mechanisms in plants.

Intestinal fibrosis is considered to be a chronic complication of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and seriously threatening human health. Effective medical therapies or preventive measures are desirable but currently unavailable. Metformin has been proved to have a satisfactory anti-inflammatory effects in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. Whether metformin can ameliorate chronic colitis-related intestinal fibrosis and the possible mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we established colitis-related intestinal fibrosis in mice by repetitive administration of TNBS or DSS. Preventive and therapeutic administration of metformin to chronic TNBS or DSS colitis mice indicated that metformin significantly attenuated intestinal fibrosis by suppressing Smad3 phosphorylation. In vitro studies with human colon fibroblast cell line (CCD-18Co) and primary human intestinal fibroblast treated with TGF-β1 confirmed the anti-fibrotic function of metformin for fibroblast activation, proliferation and collagen production. Mechanistically, metformin particularly inhibited phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of Smad3 by blocking the interaction of Smad3 with TβRI. These findings suggest that metformin will be an attractive anti-fibrotic drug for intestinal fibrosis in future therapies.

BackgroundThe optimal revascularization strategy in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) complicating by cardiogenic shock (CS) remains controversial. This study aims to evaluate the clinical outcomes of multivessel percutaneous coronary intervention (MV-PCI) compared to culprit vessel-only PCI (CO-PCI) for the treatment, only in patients with STEMI with CS.MethodsA comprehensive literature search was conducted. Studies assessed the efficacy outcomes of short (in-hospital or 30 days)/long-term mortality, cardiac death, myocardial reinfarction, repeat revascularization, and safety outcomes of stroke, bleeding, acute renal failure with MV-PCI vs. CO-PCI in patients with STEMI with CS were included. The publication bias and sensitivity analysis were also performed.ResultsA total of 15 studies were included in this meta-analysis. There was no significant difference in short- and long-term mortality in patients treated with MV-PCI compared to CO-PCI group [odds ratio (OR) = 1.17; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.92–1.48; OR = 0.86; 95% CI, 0.58–1.28]. Similarly, there were no significant differences in cardiac death (OR = 0.67; 95% CI, 0.44–1.00), myocardial reinfarction (OR = 1.24; 95% CI, 0.77–2.00), repeat revascularization (OR = 0.75; 95% CI, 0.40–1.42), bleeding (OR = 1.53; 95% CI, 0.53–4.43), or stroke (OR = 1.42; 95% CI, 0.90–2.23) between the two groups. There was a higher risk in acute renal failure (OR = 1.33; 95% CI, 1.04–1.69) in patients treated with MV-PCI when compared with CO-PCI.ConclusionThis meta-analysis suggests that there may be no significant benefit for patients with STEMI complicating CS treated with MV-PCI compared with CO-PCI, and patients are at increased risk of developing acute renal failure after MV-PCI intervention.

Visible Light Communication (VLC) is becoming a promising technology of wireless communication, due to high data rate, low cost, and immunity to Radio Frequency (RF) interference. However, the VLC systems often suffer from service disruptions because of the limited coverage of light. Therefore, the heterogeneous networks of VLC and WiFi are proposed to achieve high-speed indoor communication and seamless coverage. This paper investigates an efficient heterogeneous network resource management algorithm, which is not only significant to integrate the current network resources but also has practical significance to improve the performance of heterogeneous networks. We establish a distributed joint resource management system model and propose two kinds of resource management allocation strategies to allocate bandwidth among the users with maximum fairness. The simulation results show the feasibility of the heterogeneous network and the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Objectives: To explore and understand the SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence of convalescents, the association between antibody levels and demographic factors, and the seroepidemiology of convalescents of COVID-19 till March 2021.Methods: We recruited 517 voluntary COVID-19 convalescents in Sichuan Province and collected 1,707 serum samples till March 2021. Then we reported the seroprevalence and analyzed the associated factors.Results: Recent travel history was associated with IgM levels. Convalescents who had recent travel history were less likely to be IgM antibody negative [OR = 0.232, 95% CI: (0.128, 0.420)]. Asymptomatic cases had, approximately, twice the odds of being IgM antibody negative compared with symptomatic cases [OR = 2.583, 95% CI: (1.554, 4.293)]. Participants without symptoms were less likely to be IgG seronegative than those with symptoms [OR = 0.511, 95% CI: (0.293, 0.891)]. Convalescents aged 40–59 were less likely to be IgG seronegative than those aged below 20 [OR = 0.364, 95% CI: (0.138, 0.959)]. The duration of positive IgM antibodies persisted 365 days while the IgG persisted more than 399 days.Conclusions: Our findings suggested that recent travel history might be associated with the antibody levels of IgM, while age could be associated with the antibody levels of IgG. Infection type could be associated with both antibody levels of IgM and IgG that declined quicker in asymptomatic cases.

BackgroundSepsis is a complex systemic immune dysfunction syndrome induced by infection. Sepsis has a high mortality rate, with most patients dying due to systemic organ failure or secondary infection. Dendritic cells (DCs) are professional antigen-presenting cells. Upon infection with microbes, DCs are activated to induce adaptive immune responses for controlling infection. DC generation and function are impaired during sepsis; however, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown.MethodsPeripheral blood samples from sepsis patients were collected to examine DC subsets, DC progenitors, and apoptosis of DCs by flow cytometer. In vitro induction of DCs from hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells were established and a variety of sepsis-associated inflammatory mediators [e.g., interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF)] and Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were determined for the impact on DC generation and function in vitro.ResultsOur results demonstrate that sepsis-induced systemic inflammation impairs the capacity of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) to produce DCs, including conventional DCs (cDCs) and plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs). We investigated peripheral blood (PB) samples from 34 pediatric patients on days 1 to 7 following diagnosis. Compared to healthy donors (n = 18), the sepsis patients exhibited a significantly fewer percentage and number of pDCs and cDCs, and a lower expression of antigen presenting molecule HLD-DR and co-stimulatory molecules (e.g., CD86) on the surface of DCs. This sepsis-induced DC impairment was associated with significantly increased apoptotic death of DCs and marked decreases of progenitor cells that give rise to DCs. Furthermore, we observed that among the tested sepsis-associated cytokines (e.g., IFN-γ, IL-1β, TNF-α, and G-CSF), G-CSF and IFN-γ impaired DC development from cultured HSPCs. G-CSF also markedly decreased the expression of HLA-DR on HSPC-derived DCs and their cytokine production, including IL-12 and IFN-β.ConclusionsCollectively, these findings indicate that sepsis impairs the survival of functional DCs and their development from HSPCs. Strategies for improving DC reconstitution following sepsis may restore DC progenitors and their associated function.

Abstract Background Seasonal patterns of influenza A subtypes and B lineages in tropical/subtropical regions across age have remained to be explored. The impact of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic on seasonal influenza activity have not been well understood. Methods Based on a national sentinel hospital-based influenza surveillance system, the epidemiology of influenza virus during 2006/07–2015/16 was characterized in the subtropical city, Chengdu. Chengdu is one of the most populous cities in southwestern China, where the first reported case of A/H1N1pdm09 in mainland China was identified. Wavelet analysis was applied to identify the periodicities of A/H3N2, seasonal A/H1N1, A/H1N1pdm09, Victoria, and Yamagata across age, respectively. The persistence and age distribution patterns were described during the pre-pandemic (2006/07–2008/09), pandemic (2009/10), and post-pandemic (2010/11–2015/16) seasons. Results A total of 10,981 respiratory specimens were collected, of which 2516 influenza cases were identified. Periodicity transition from semi-annual cycles to an annual cycle was observed for composite influenza virus as well as A/H3N2 along in Chengdu since the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. Semi-annual cycles of composite influenza virus and A/H3N2 along were observed again during 2014/15–2015/16, coinciding with the emergence and predominance of A/H3N2 significant antigenic drift groups. However, A/H1N1pdm09, Victoria, and Yamagata generally demonstrated an annual winter-spring peak in non-pandemic seasons. Along with periodicity transitions, age groups with higher positive rates shifted from school-aged children and adults to adults and the elderly for A/H1N1pdm09 during 2009/10–2010/11 and for A/H3N2 during 2014/15–2015/16. Conclusions Differences in periodicity and age distribution by subtype/lineage and by season highlight the importance of increasing year-round influenza surveillance and developing subtype/lineage- and age-specific prevention and control measures. Changes of periodicity and age shifts should be considered in public health response to influenza pandemics and epidemics. In addition, it is suggested to use quadrivalent influenza vaccines to provide protection against both influenza B lineages.

Germplasm are living genetic resources that can serve as bearers of heredity, and include germ cells and their precursors, plant seeds and pollen, animal sperm, oocytes, embryos, and larvae. Cryopreservation refers to the preservation of biological materials at extremely low temperatures, typically using solid carbon dioxide at -80°C or liquid nitrogen at -196°C for freezing, and cryogenic storage in perpetuity. Germplasm cryopreservation is an important technology applied for medical treatment, maintenance of biological diversity, preservation of valuable genetic resources, assistance of breeding programs, and conservation of imperiled species. This extension publication is intended to introduce the basic concepts, history, principles, and applications of germplasm cryopreservation technology.

In D2D communication, physically adjacent users can directly establish connections without transmitting through base station, which can improve the network performance. The cellular D2D caching technology can offload part of the traffic of the base station and effectively alleviate the data transmission pressure of the base station. However, there is no research on cache mechanism in cellular D2D network that consider the collaboration willingness of equipment (UE). Therefore, the cooperative willingness aware collaborative caching mechanism towards cellular D2D communication (CWCM) is proposed. First, a D2D UE cache capability estimation method is proposed, which comprehensively considers the cache space occupied by the local cache content and the actual cache space setting of the UE to estimate the cache capability of the UE. Second, a D2D UE service relationship perception method is presented in which the content cache and the content discard records are used to comprehensively consider the cooperative and non-cooperative behavior to sense the service relationship between D2D UEs. Third, a collaborative willingness awareness caching mechanism is designed by considering the cache capability of the UE and the service relationship between the UEs. Simulation results show that the proposed CWCM can greatly improve the cache hit rate, largely reduce the transmission energy consumption, and average delay.

The Eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica (Family Ostreidae) is one of the most important fishery and aquaculture species in the U.S. and is a keystone species for coastal reefs. A breeding program was initiated in 2019 to support the fast-growing aquaculture industry culturing this species in the Gulf of Mexico. Oysters from 17 wild populations in embayment along the U.S. Gulf of Mexico coast from southwest Florida to the Matagorda Bay, Texas were used as broodstock for the program to maximize genetic diversity in the base population. A sperm repository of the broodstock was established to support the breeding project. The goal of this study was to demonstrate the sperm sample collection, processing, cryopreservation, and the data management plan involved in the establishment of a sperm germplasm repository of base populations. The supporting objectives were to: (1) develop a data management plan for the sperm repository; (2) streamline the procedure for sample collection, processing, and cryopreservation; (3) incorporate sperm quality analysis into the procedure, and (4) archive the cryopreserved samples as a repository for future use in the breeding program. This sperm repository included a total of 102 male oysters from the 17 collection sites (six oysters per site). A data management plan was developed with six categories, including sample collection, phenotype, fresh sperm, genotype, cryopreservation, and post-thaw sperm, as guide for data collection. Sperm collection was accomplished by strip spawn, and fresh sperm production, motility, and fertility were recorded for quality analysis. Cryopreserved sperm samples were sorted, labelled, archived, and stored in liquid nitrogen for future use. Post-thaw motility (1–30%) and plasm membrane integrity (15.34–70.36%) were recorded as post-thaw quality parameters. Overall, this study demonstrated a streamlined procedure of oyster sperm collection, processing, and cryopreservation for establishing a sperm repository that can serve as a template for construction of oyster germplasm repositories for breeding programs.

Although LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 is attracting increasing attention on account of its high specific capacity, the moderate cycle lifetime still hinders its large-scale commercialization applications. Herein, the Ti-doped LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 compounds are successfully synthesized. The Li(Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1)0.99Ti0.01O2 sample exhibits the best electrochemical performance. Under the voltage range of 2.7–4.3 V, it maintains a reversible capacity of 151.01 mAh·g−1 with the capacity retention of 83.98% after 200 cycles at 1 C. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and differential capacity profiles during prolonged cycling demonstrate that the Ti doping could enhance both the abilities of electronic transition and Li ion diffusion. More importantly, Ti doping can also improve the reversibility of the H2-H3 phase transitions during charge-discharge cycles, thus improving the electrochemical performance of Ni-rich cathodes.

Triploid-tetraploid breeding technology has been applied to commercial oyster aquaculture worldwide. In this paper, a metasurface Terahertz absorber based on the fractal technology of a graphene geometry resonator to realize ultra-wideband, ultrathin, adjustable double-layer cross-fractal formation is introduced. This paper proposes a dynamically tuned graphene absorbing material. The structure is composed of one- to four-level-fractal graphene pattern layers, MgF2 layers and metal reflective layers to form a two-sided mirror of an asymmetric Fabry–Perot cavity. To confine the terahertz electromagnetic wave, four different fractals are integrated into a supercell, and the coupling and superposition of adjacent resonant cavities form a broadband high-absorption absorber. Using finite element-based full-wave electromagnetic simulation software to simulate the response frequency of 0.4–2.0 THz, we found that the absorber achieves a broadband 1.26 THz range (absorption > 80%) and a relative bandwidth of 106.8%. By adjusting the Fermi energy, it can realize free switching and expand to wider broadband terahertz absorption, by adjusting the polarization angle (Φ) from 0 to 90° to prove that the structure is not sensitive to polarization, the absorber provides a 60° large angle of incidence, polarization for TE and TM the absorption pattern remains basically the same. Compared with the previous work, our proposed structure uses fractal technology to expand the bandwidth and provide dynamic adjustable characteristics with great degrees of freedom. The appearance of the fractal structure reduces the difficulty of actual processing.

A method of coding patterns is proposed to achieve flexible control of absorption response at terahertz frequencies. The designed absorber consists of an Au-graphene pattern layer, a SiO2 layer and a metal reflective layer. Among them, we use concentrical circle structure to achieve broadband absorption, and adjust graphene’s Fermi level to achieve tunable absorption. In addition, we propose an encoding method that can achieve flexible control of the absorption response at the terahertz frequency based on the external voltage applied on the graphene membrane, thereby having a programmable function. We also use COMSOL to simulate the electric field distribution diagram to explain the underlying physical mechanism. The programmable broadband adjustable absorber proposed in this paper has potential application prospects in the fields of optical equipment, information transmission, digital coding and artificial intelligence (AI).

Mitochondrial transcription termination factors (mTERFs) regulate the expression of mitochondrial genes and are closely related to the function of the mitochondrion and chloroplast. In this study, the mTERF gene family in capsicum (Capsicum annuum L.) was identified and characterized through genomic and bioinformatic analyses. Capsicum was found to possess at least 35 mTERF genes (CamTERFs), which were divided into eight major groups following phylogenetic analysis. Analysis of CamTERF promoters revealed the presence of many cis-elements related to the regulation of cellular respiration and photosynthesis. In addition, CamTERF promoters contained cis-elements related to phytohormone regulation and stress responses. Differentially expressed genes in different tissues and developmental phases were identified using RNA-seq data, which revealed that CamTERFs exhibit various expression and co-expression patterns. Gene ontology (GO) annotations associated CamTERFs primarily with mitochondrion and chloroplast function and composition. These results contribute towards understanding the role of mTERFs in capsicum growth, development, and stress responses. Moreover, our data assist in the identification of CamTERFs with important functions, which opens avenues for future studies.

As a promising high-capacity anode material for Li-ion batteries, NiMn2O4 always suffers from the poor intrinsic conductivity and the architectural collapse originating from the volume expansion during cycle. Herein, a combined structure and architecture modulation is proposed to tackle concurrently the two handicaps, via a facile and well-controlled solvothermal approach to synthesize NiMn2O4/NiCo2O4 mesocrystals with superlattice structure and hollow multi-porous architecture. It is demonstrated that the obtained NiCo1.5Mn0.5O4 sample is made up of a new mixed-phase NiMn2O4/NiCo2O4 compound system, with a high charge capacity of 532.2 mAh g−1 with 90.4% capacity retention after 100 cycles at a current density of 1 A g−1. The enhanced electrochemical performance can be attributed to the synergistic effects of the superlattice structure and the hollow multi-porous architecture of the NiMn2O4/NiCo2O4 compound. The superlattice structure can improve ionic conductivity to enhance charge transport kinetics of the bulk material, while the hollow multi-porous architecture can provide enough void spaces to alleviate the architectural change during cycling, and shorten the lithium ions diffusion and electron-transportation distances.
