To study the nucleation and growth mechanism of Ni/SiC composite coatings, electrodeposition was conducted in the Ni bath containing SiC particles with different sizes. Compared to the Ni coating electrodeposited from the bare Ni bath, the Ni/SiC composite coatings exhibited similar grain size but rougher surface morphology due to the incorporation of SiC particles. By means of chronoamperometry (CA) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) techniques, it was found that the introduction of SiC particles did not change the nucleation mode of Ni: the Scharifker-Hills three-dimensional instantaneous nucleation mode. However, the nucleation sites on the cathode were reduced due to the inert surface and low conductivity of SiC particles. At a step potential of −0.94 V, Ni presented the maximum nucleation density (N0) of 3.09 × 107 cm−2, which was reduced by one order of magnitude for the Ni/SiC. Furthermore, SiC particles in the bath would extend the diffusion path of Ni2+ ions, resulting in the decrease in diffusion coefficient from 1.04 × 10−7 cm2 s−1 (Ni) to 9.91 × 10−9 cm2 s−1 (Ni/50 nm SiC), 1.83 × 10−8 cm2 s−1 (Ni/500 nm SiC) and 2.29 × 10−8 cm2 s−1 (Ni/5 μm SiC), suggesting the “Blocking effect”. COMSOL simulation further confirmed the “Blocking effect”. The “Blocking effect” would lead to excessive interface gaps around 5 μm SiC particles due to the uneven electrodeposition of Ni. To address the issue, we proposed that adding non-ionic surfactants into the bath to lower the electrochemical reaction rate of Ni2+ ions and accordingly gained composite coatings with fine continuity.

The aging process profoundly impacts the systemic milieu, with specific blood-borne factors playing critical roles in its regulation. Platelet Factor 4 (PF4), released by platelets, has emerged as a novel blood-borne factor that contributes to the rejuvenation of aging brains in rodents. However, the age-related disparity in PF4 levels in humans remains poorly understood. To explore the relationship between PF4 and the natural aging process in humans, we collected peripheral blood (PB) samples from young (23.40 ± 2.13 years, n = 15) and elderly (75.23 ± 4.19 years, n = 13) individuals, along with cord blood (CB) samples (n = 15). ELISA analysis revealed higher PF4 levels in platelet-rich plasma lysate from young PB compared with that from elderly PB. Consistent with this, qPCR results demonstrated the highest PF4 expression in young PB among the three groups. In addition, FACS analysis showed increased expression of CXCR3 in mononuclear cells of young PB, indicating a greater responsiveness to PF4. Finally, our RNA-sequencing analysis corroborated platelets as a sensitive element during the natural aging process, and indicated platelets play a pivotal role in antioxidant response during aging, as evidenced by significant enrichment of several age-related pathways. These findings reveal that, alongside PF4 levels, platelets undergo substantial alterations during aging. Taken together, our data identified age-related disparities in platelets and PF4-related elements during natural aging and underscored the potential of targeting platelet modulation as an intervention in the aging process.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the effects of ovarian injection of autologous platelet rich plasma (aPRP) on patients with poor ovarian responder (POR) based on the existing clinical evidence.MethodsAccording to systematic review and meta-analysis, we comprehensively searched nine databases established as of September 6, 2023, and evaluated the impact of ovarian PRP infusion on poor ovarian responder. The research results include serum follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH) and anti-Mullerian hormone(AMH) levels, antral Follicle Count(AFC), oocyte number, and embryo number. The Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to evaluate the quality of inclusion in trials.ResultsAdd up to 10 studies consisting of 793 participants were included in the meta-analysis. BackgroundMAF transcription factor G antisense RNA 1 (MAFG-AS1), a novel long non-coding RNA discovered recently, was proved to be useful in predicting malignancy prognosis. Nevertheless, its association with cancer prognosis has been inconsistent. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to explore the clinicopathological and prognostic significance of MAFG-AS1 in diverse carcinomas.MethodsStudies focused on MAFG-AS1 expression as a prognostic role in cancers were thoroughly searched in six electronic databases. The value of MAFG-AS1 in malignancies was assessed by hazard ratios (HRs) or odds ratios (ORs). Additionally, the GEPIA database was utilized to further strengthen our conclusion.ResultsA total of 15 studies involving 1187 cases and nine types of cancers were recruited into this meta-analysis. High MAFG-AS1 expression was significantly related to advanced tumor stage (OR = 0.52, 95%CI [0.39, 0.69], P < 0.00001), earlier lymph node metastasis (OR = 3.62, 95%CI [2.19, 5.99], P < 0.00001), worse tumor differentiation (OR = 0.64, 95%CI [0.43, 0.95], P = 0.03), and poor overall survival (HR = 1.94, 95%CI [1.72, 2.19], P < 0.00001). No significant heterogeneity and publication bias was detected across studies. Meanwhile, MAFG-AS1 was significantly elevated in ten kinds of cancers based on the validation of the GEPIA database.ConclusionThe results of this meta-analysis indicated that high MAFG-AS1 expression is dramatically correlated with unfavorable prognosis in cancers. MAFG-AS1 may be served as a promising biomarker for malignancies.

Abstract Aging is accompanied by the decline of organismal functions and a series of prominent hallmarks, including genetic and epigenetic alterations. These aging-associated epigenetic changes include DNA methylation, histone modification, chromatin remodeling, non-coding RNA (ncRNA) regulation, and RNA modification, all of which participate in the regulation of the aging process, and hence contribute to aging-related diseases. Therefore, understanding the epigenetic mechanisms in aging will provide new avenues to develop strategies to delay aging. Indeed, aging interventions based on manipulating epigenetic mechanisms have led to the alleviation of aging or the extension of the lifespan in animal models. Small molecule-based therapies and reprogramming strategies that enable epigenetic rejuvenation have been developed for ameliorating or reversing aging-related conditions. In addition, adopting health-promoting activities, such as caloric restriction, exercise, and calibrating circadian rhythm, has been demonstrated to delay aging. Furthermore, various clinical trials for aging intervention are ongoing, providing more evidence of the safety and efficacy of these therapies. Here, we review recent work on the epigenetic regulation of aging and outline the advances in intervention strategies for aging and age-associated diseases. A better understanding of the critical roles of epigenetics in the aging process will lead to more clinical advances in the prevention of human aging and therapy of aging-related diseases.

Abstract The dynamics of synaptic vesicles (SVs) within presynaptic domains are tightly controlled by synapsin1 phosphorylation; however, the mechanism underlying the anchoring of synapsin1 with F-actin or SVs is not yet fully understood. Here, we found that Syn1 is modified with protein palmitoylation, and examining the roles of Syn1 palmitoylation in neurons led us to uncover that Syn1 palmitoylation is negatively regulated by its phosphorylation; together, they manipulate the clustering and redistribution of SVs. Using the combined approaches of electron microscopy and genetics, we revealed that Syn1 palmitoylation is vital for its binding with F-actin but not SVs. Inhibition of Syn1 palmitoylation causes defects in SVs clustering and a reduced number of total SVs in vivo. We propose a model in which SVs redistribution is triggered by upregulated Syn1 phosphorylation and downregulated Syn1 palmitoylation, and they reversibly promote SVs clustering. The crosstalk of Syn1 palmitoylation and phosphorylation thereby bidirectionally manipulates SVs dynamics in neurons.

The detection and feedback of displacement and velocity significantly impact the control accuracy of the linear feed system. In this study, we propose a flexible and self-powered displacement sensor based on the triboelectric effect, designed for seamless integration into linear feed systems. The displacement sensor comprises two parts, the mover and stator, operating in a sliding mode. This sensor can precisely detect the displacement of the linear feed system with a large detection range. Additionally, the sensor is capable of real-time velocity detection of linear feed systems, with an error rate below 0.5%. It also offers advantages, such as excellent flexibility, compact size, stability, easy fabrication, and seamless integration, with linear feed systems. These results highlight the potential of the self-powered displacement sensor for various applications in linear feed systems.

Abstract Pulse diagnosis is an irreplaceable part of traditional Chinese medical science. However, application of the traditional pulse monitoring method was restricted in the modernization of Chinese medical science since it was difficult to capture real signals and integrate obscure feelings with a modern data platform. Herein, a novel multichannel pulse monitoring platform based on traditional Chinese medical science pulse theory and wearable electronics was proposed. The pulse sensing platform simultaneously detected pulse conditions at three pulse positions (Chi, Cun, and Guan). These signals were fitted to smooth surfaces to enable 3-dimensional pulse mapping, which vividly revealed the shape of the pulse length and width and compensated for the shortcomings of traditional single-point pulse sensors. Moreover, the pulse sensing system could measure the pulse signals from different individuals with different conditions and distinguish the differences in pulse signals. In addition, this system could provide full information on the temporal and spatial dimensions of a person’s pulse waveform, which is similar to the true feelings of doctors’ fingertips. This innovative, cost-effective, easily designed pulse monitoring platform based on flexible pressure sensor arrays may provide novel applications in modernization of Chinese medical science or intelligent health care.

Abstract The internal availability of silent speech serves as a translator for people with aphasia and keeps human–machine/human interactions working under various disturbances. This paper develops a silent speech strategy to achieve all-weather, natural interactions. The strategy requires few usage specialized skills like sign language but accurately transfers high-capacity information in complicated and changeable daily environments. In the strategy, the tattoo-like electronics imperceptibly attached on facial skin record high-quality bio-data of various silent speech, and the machine-learning algorithm deployed on the cloud recognizes accurately the silent speech and reduces the weight of the wireless acquisition module. A series of experiments show that the silent speech recognition system (SSRS) can enduringly comply with large deformation (~45%) of faces by virtue of the electricity-preferred tattoo-like electrodes and recognize up to 110 words covering daily vocabularies with a high average accuracy of 92.64% simply by use of small-sample machine learning. We successfully apply the SSRS to 1-day routine life, including daily greeting, running, dining, manipulating industrial robots in deafening noise, and expressing in darkness, which shows great promotion in real-world applications.

Sb2(S, Se)3 solar cells have shown great promise due to the advantages of low cost, non-toxic and high stability. However, traditional devices commonly use noble metal as the back electrode, which not only increases device cost but also limits device stability. Herein, carbon materials are used to replace the noble metals in Sb2(S, Se)3 solar cells. In addition, to grow high-quality Sb2(S, Se)3 films, a two-step hydrothermal method was developed. The carbon-based Sb2(S, Se)3 solar cells based on the above film achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.76%. After inserting a stable P3HT layer at the Sb2(S, Se)3 film/carbon interface, hole extraction was enhanced and the PCE was promoted to 4.15%. This work brings out a promising route to produce emerging solar cells with cost-effective and stable materials.

In order to increase the hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of nickel-based coatings, pure nickel is often co-electrodeposited with silicon carbide (SiC) particles. However, SiC particles tend to agglomerate and precipitate in the bath, which reduces the amounts of nanoparticles and causes nonuniformity. Herein, we solve these problems by using binary non-ionic surfactants (Span 80 and Tween 60) to effectively disperse SiC particles (binary-SiC) in the bath, which suppresses nanoparticles agglomeration and leads to uniformly distributed SiC particles in the composite coatings. In comparison to the Ni/SiC coatings electrodeposited from the commonly used SDS-modified SiC, the coatings prepared with binary-SiC (Ni/binary-SiC) show finer crystallization and a smoother surface. In addition, the Ni/binary-SiC coatings exhibit higher hardness (556 Hv) and wear resistance (2.95 mg cm−2). Furthermore, higher corrosion resistance is also achieved by the Ni/binary-SiC coatings.

This study examined the food insecurity and coping mechanisms among the indigenous Bangladeshi population of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) region to extract empirical evidence on the ongoing discussion on the COVID-19 pandemic-exacerbated food-insecurity situation. The study adopted a qualitative approach by interviewing 60 indigenous households. Data were collected in two phases between 15 June 2020, and 30 July 2021 in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) region. Thematic data analyses were performed using the Granheim approach and NVivo-12 software. The authors used Huston’s social–ecological theory to explain the indigenous coping mechanisms. The research evidence revealed that most households experienced challenges over daily foods, manifesting in the decreasing consumption of them, the increased price of food items, a food crisis due to an income shock, malnutrition, the shifting to unhealthy food consumption, starvation and hunger, and food insufficiency, thereby leading to mental stress. This study further revealed that the indigenous population took crucial coping strategies to survive the pandemic. In response to COVID-19, they took loans and borrowed foods, reduced expenses, changed their food habits, avoided nutritional foods, relied on vegetables, sold domestic animals and properties, collected forest and hill foods, and depended on governmental and societal relief. This study also provides the in-depth policy actions for the urgent intervention of government, stakeholders, policymakers, NGOs, and development practitioners to take necessary initiatives to enhance the quality of life of the people that were affected by the post-pandemic recovery period.

Platelets, the tiny anucleate cells responsible for stopping bleeding through thrombosis, are derived from hematopoietic stem cells through a series of differentiation steps. Thrombocytopenia, characterized by abnormally low blood platelet counts, may arise from cancer therapies, trauma, sepsis, as well as blood disorders, and could become a life-threatening problem. Platelet transfusion is the most effective strategy to treat thrombocytopenia, however, the source of platelets is in great shortage. Therefore, in vitro generation of platelets has become an important topic and numerous attempts have been made toward generating platelets from different types of cells, including hematopoietic stem cells, pluripotent stem cells, fibroblast cells, and adipose-derived cells. In this review, we will detail the efforts made to produce, in the in vitro culture, platelets from these different cell types. Importantly, as transfusion medicine requires a huge number of platelets, we will highlight some studies on producing platelets on a large scale. Although new methods of gene manipulation, new culture conditions, new cytokines and chemical compounds have been introduced in platelet generation research since the first study of hematopoietic stem cell-derived platelets nearly 30 years ago, limited success has been achieved in obtaining truly mature and functional platelets in vitro, indicating the studies of platelets fall behind those of other blood cell types. This is possibly because megakaryocytes, which produce platelets, are very rare in blood and marrow. We have previously developed a platform to identify new extrinsic and intronic regulators for megakaryocytic lineage development, and in this review, we will also cover our effort on that. In summary, stem cell-based differentiation is a promising way of generating large-scale platelets to meet clinical needs, and continuous study of the cellular development of platelets will greatly facilitate this.

This study aimed to explore the therapeutic effect and mechanism of rapamycin (RAPA) on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in BALB/C mice induced by pristane. The mice were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 6): control, model, saline, RAPA (1 mg/kg) and RAPA (2 mg/kg). All groups were injected with pristane except control. HE staining revealed 1 mg/kg and 2 mg/kg RAPA treatments obviously alleviated pathological changes in the kidney of SLE mice such as glomeruli enlargement, hyperplasia of mesangial cells, epithelial and endothelial cells, infiltration of inflammatory cells, and edema-like degeneration of renal tubules. Summary: This article proposed a high-performance triboelectric-electromagnetic hybrid wind energy harvester (WEH). By adopting the revolution and rotation movements of tapered rollers, which serve as both the rotor of the electromagnetic generator (EMG) part and freestanding layers of the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) part, the WEH can work as a sustainable power source and a self-powered wind speed sensor. When the wind speed is 12 m/s, super-high open-circuit voltage peaks of 47.4 and 683 V can be achieved by the EMG and TENG, respectively, corresponding to the high-power outputs of 62 and 1.8 mW. It was demonstrated that the WEH can easily light up over 600 red light-emitting diodes and even a 5-W globe light. A self-powered wireless temperature and humidity sensing network was also systematically demonstrated. In summary, the proposed WEH exhibits bright future toward IoT applications, such as in border detection, smart buildings, and so on.

Abstract Background Duck viral hepatitis (DVH) is a highly contagious viral disease affecting ducks. It can be caused by five agents, including duck hepatitis A virus genotypes 1 (DHAV-1), 2 (DHAV-2), and 3 (DHAV-3), as well as duck hepatitis virus 2 and duck hepatitis virus 3. Since 2007, DHAV-3 has been known to be the most prevalent in East and South Asia. So far, the information regarding the propagation of DHAV-3 in cultured cells is limited. In this study, we describe the comparative studies on the growth properties of DHAV-3 in primary duck embryo fibroblast (DEF) cells using two different strains: a virulent strain C-GY and an attenuated strain YDF120. The effect of fetal calf serum (FCS) and chick serum (CS) on DHAV-3 replication and the mechanism of the inhibitory effect conferred by FCS were also investigated. Results Following serial passages, both C-GY and YDF120 failed to produce cytopathic effect and plaques. The combined quantitative real-time PCR and indirect immunofluorescence staining methods showed that the two viruses could be propagated productively in DEF cells. Investigation of the viral growth kinetics revealed that the two viruses replicated in DEF cells with similar efficiencies, while the viral load of the virulent C-GY strain peaked more rapidly when compared with the attenuated YDF120 strain. Neutralization assay and time-of-drug-addition study indicated that FCS displayed inhibitory effect on DHAV-3 replication. Analysis on the mechanism of action of FCS against DHAV-3 demonstrated that the inhibitory effect was reflected at three steps of the DHAV-3 life cycle including adsorption, replication, and release. Conclusions Both virulent and attenuated DAHV-3 strains can establish noncytocidal, productive infections in DEF cells. The virulent strain replicates more rapidly than the attenuated strain in early infection period. FCS has an inhibitory effect on DHAV-3 replication, which may be attributed to action of a non-specific inhibitory factor present in FCS directly on the virus. These findings may provide new insights into the development of potential antiviral agents.

Summary: The CsPbI3 inorganic perovskite is a potential candidate for fabricating long-term operational photovoltaic devices owing to its intrinsic superb thermal stability. However, the carbon-based CsPbI3 perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) without hole transport material (HTM) are currently disadvantaged by their relatively low power conversion efficiency resulting from the poor grain quality and mismatched energy band levels of the as-made CsPbI3 films. Herein we demonstrate that by doping Na into the CsPbI3 lattice, the grain quality is significantly improved with low defect density, and also, the energy band levels are better matched to the contact electrodes, affording a higher built-in potential. Consequently, the Voc of the C-PSCs is drastically increased from 0.77 to 0.92 V, and the efficiency from 8.6% to 10.7%, a record value for the CsPbI3 PSCs without HTM. Ocean wave is one of the promising renewable energy sources all around the world. In this paper, an electromagnetic ocean wave energy harvester (OWEH) based on efficient swing body mechanism is presented. A swing body senses the ultra-low frequency wave motion and drive the rotor of an electromagnetic power module (EPM) rotating at high speed through transmission gears. A series of electromagnetic and dynamic simulations were carried out to optimize the power generation capability of the OWEH. Additionally, the power management circuit is specially designed such that the generated power is able to charge a lithium battery and discharge an external load automatically. The OWEH is installed inside an ocean buoy and tested in the Yellow China Sea. When the peak wave height is greater than 0.6 m, the maximum peak-to-peak output voltage is 15.9 V. The corresponding output power is as high as 0.13 W and the maximum power density is 0.21 mW/cm3, where the internal resistance of the OWEH is 122 Ω. Due to the high performance and adaptability, the OWEH can potentially power many low power components, which opens a promising way for improving the life of ocean buoys. Considering the small dimension of 10 × 10 × 6.3 cm3, this OWEH can be mounted inside most buoys easily and realize the self-powered ocean buoys in the near future.

Neutralizing antibodies are the key mediators of protective immune response to flaviviruses after both infection and vaccination. Plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) is considered the “gold standard” for measurement of the immunity. To date, little is known regarding neutralizing antibody response to Tembusu virus (TMUV), a novel flavivirus emerging in ducks in 2010. Here, we developed a PRNT for detection of TMUV neutralizing antibodies. Following optimization and validation, the PRNT was applied to test serum samples from different flocks of ducks. Using sera prepared in experimental conditions, the levels of 50% end point titer (neutralizing dose, ND50) generated from positive sera (5,012–79,433) were significantly higher than those from mock-infected sera (10 to 126), indicating that the test can be used in the detection of TMUV-specific neutralizing antibodies. Dose-dependent efficacy test of a cell-derived 180th passage of a plaque-purified virus of the PS TMUV isolate (PS180) in combined with immunization-challenge experiments revealed that ND50 titer of ~1,258 is the minimum capable of providing adequate protection against challenge with virulent TMUV. In the investigation of serum samples collected from three flocks infected by TMUV and four flocks vaccinated with a licensed attenuated vaccine (the 120th passage virus), ND50 titers peaked at 1 week after both disease onset (7,943–125,893) and vaccination (3,612–79,432), and high levels of ND50 titer were detected in sera collected at 15 weeks after disease onset (5,012–63,095) and 17 weeks after vaccination (3,981–25,119). Together these findings demonstrated that spontaneous and experimental infections by TMUV and vaccination with the licensed TMUV attenuated vaccine elicit high, long-lasting neutralizing antibodies. The highest ND50 titer of neutralizing antibodies elicited by PS180 was determined to be 3,162, suggesting that attenuation of TMUV by more passages has a dramatic impact on the neutralizing antibody response of the virus.

This paper proposed a high-performance magnetic-coupled nonlinear electromagnetic generator (MNL-EMG). A high-permeability iron core is incorporated to the coil. The strong coupling between the iron core and the vibrating magnets lead to significantly improved output power and a broadened operating bandwidth. The magnetic force of the iron core to the permanent magnets and the magnetic flux density inside the iron core are simulated, and the dimension parameters of the MNL-EMG are optimized. Under acceleration of 1.5 g, the MNL-EMG can maintain high output performance in a wide frequency range of 17~30 Hz, which is 4.3 times wider than that of linear electromagnetic generator (EMG) without an iron core. The maximum output power of MNL-EMG reaches 174 mW under the optimal load of 35 Ω, which is higher than those of most vibration generators with frequency less than 30 Hz. The maximum 360 parallel-connected LEDs were successfully lit by the prototype. Moreover, the prototype has an excellent charging performance such that a 1.2 V, 900 mAh Ni-MH battery was charged from 0.95 V to 0.98 V in 240 s. Both the simulation and experiments verify that the proposed bistable EMG device based on magnetic coupling has advantages of wide operating bandwidth and high output power, which could be sufficient to power micro electronic devices.

Domain III of the envelope protein (EDIII) is the major target of flavivirus neutralizing antibody. To date, little is known regarding antibody-mediated neutralization of Tembusu virus (TMUV), a novel flavivirus emerging in duck in 2010. Here, a novel monoclonal antibody (MAb), designated 12F11, was prepared by immunization of mice with recombinant EDIII (rEDIII) protein. Using virus neutralization test, 12F11 in undiluted ascites neutralized the TMUV infectivity to induce the development of cytopathic effects in BHK-21 cells, indicating that 12F11 exhibits a neutralizing activity. The neutralizing activity of 12F11 was confirmed by plaque reduction neutralization test, in which 12F11 reduced significantly the number of plaques produced by TMUV in BHK-21 cells. Western blot analyses of a series of truncated rEDIII proteins showed that the epitope recognized by 12F11 includes amino acids between residues 8 and 77 of EDIII protein. Function analysis demonstrated that 12F11 neutralizes TMUV infection at virus adsorption and at a step after adsorption to a certain extent. The present study provides an important step towards elucidating antibody-mediated neutralization of TMUV.

Flexible electronic devices are developing rapidly, especially in medical applications. This paper reports an arrayed flexible piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducer (FPMUT) with a sandwich structure for adjuvant treatment of bone injury. To make the device conformable and stretchable for attaching to the skin surface, the flexible substrate of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was combined with the flexible metal line interconnection between the bulk lead zirconate titanate (PZT) arrays. Simulations and experiments were carried out to verify the resonant frequency and tensile property of the reported FPMUT device. The device had a resonant frequency of 321.15 KHz and a maximum sound pressure level (SPL) of 180.19 dB at the distance of 5 cm in water. In addition, detailed experiments were carried out to test its acoustic performance with different pork tissues, and the results indicated good ultrasound penetration. These findings confirm that the FPMUT shows unique advantages for adjuvant treatment of bone injury.

This paper reports the design, micromachining and characterization of an array of electromagnetic energy harvesters (EHs) with multiple frequency peaks. The authors present the combination of three multi-modal spring-mass structures so as to realize at least nine resonant peaks within a single microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) chip. It is assembled with permanent magnet to show an electromagnetic-based energy harvesting capability. This is the first demonstration of multi-frequency MEMS EH existing with more than three resonant peaks within a limited frequency range of 189 to 662 Hz. It provides a more effective approach to harvest energy from the vibration sources of multiple frequency peaks.

This paper proposes an impact-based micro piezoelectric energy harvesting system (PEHS) working with the frequency up-conversion mechanism. The PEHS consists of a high-frequency straight piezoelectric cantilever (SPC), a low-frequency S-shaped stainless-steel cantilever (SSC), and supporting frames. During the vibration, the frequency up-conversion behavior is realized through the impact between the bottom low-frequency cantilever and the top high-frequency cantilever. The SPC used in the system is fabricated using a new micro electromechanical system (MEMS) fabrication process for a piezoelectric thick film on silicon substrate. The output performances of the single SPC and the PEHS under different excitation accelerations are tested. In the experiment, the normalized power density of the PEHS is 0.216 μW·g−1·Hz−1·cm−3 at 0.3 g acceleration, which is 34 times higher than that of the SPC at the same acceleration level of 0.3 g. The PEHS can improve the output power under the low frequency and low acceleration scenario.

A hybrid energy harvester is presented in this paper to harvest energy from water flow motion and temperature difference in an irrigating pipe at the same time. The harvester is based on the integration of thermoelectric and electromagnetic mechanisms. To harvest the water flow motion, a turbine fan with magnets that are attached on the blades is placed inside of the water pipe. Multiple coils turn the water flow energy into electricity with the rotation of the turbine. The thermoelectric generators (TEGs) are attached around the pipe, so as to harvest energy due to temperature difference. For a maximum temperature difference of 55 °C (hot side 80 °C and room temperature 25 °C), twelve serial-connected TEGs can generate voltage up to 0.346 V. Under a load resistance of 20 Ώ, the power output of 1.264 mW can be achieved. For a maximum water flow rate of 49.9 L/min, the electromagnetic generator (EMG) can produce an open circuit voltage of 0.911 V. The EMG can be potentially used as a water flow meter due to the linear relationship between water flow rate and output voltage. Under the joint action of TEG and EMG, the maximum terminal voltage for TEG is 66 mV and for EMG is 241 mV at load resistances of 10 and 100 Ώ, respectively, resulting in a corresponding power output of 0.435 and 0.584 mW.

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a promising technology because it can harvest energy from the environment to enable self-sustainable mobile and wearable electronic devices. In this work, we present a flexible touch pad capable of detecting the contact location of an object and generating substantial energy simultaneously based on the coupling of triboelectric effects and electrostatic induction. The touch pad consists of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) thin film, multiple Aluminum (Al) electrodes and Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) layers, which can be achieved through low cost, simplified and scalable fabrication process. Different from the conventional multi-pixel-based positioning sensor (i.e., large array of sensing elements and electrodes), the analogue method proposed here is used to implement the positioning function with only four electrodes. Position location can achieve a detecting resolution of as small as 1.3 mm (the size of locating layer is 7.5 cm × 7.5 cm). For the energy harvesting part, a multilayer structure is designed to provide higher current output. The open circuit voltage of the device is around 420 V and the short circuit current can reach up to 6.26 µA with current density of 0.25 µA/cm2. The maximum output power obtained is approximately 10 mW, which is 0.4 mW/cm2. The flexibility and significantly reduced number of electrodes enable the proposed touch pad to be readily integrated into portable electronic devices, such as intelligent robots, laptops, healthcare devices, and environmental surveys, etc.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are highly promising because they can scavenge energy from their working environment to sustainably power wearable/mobile electronics. In this work, we propose a novel and straightforward strategy for six-axis force detection and object controlling by using a self-powered sensor based on TENG. The self-powered sensor can be used in diversified tactile sensing and energy saving applications, which has been demonstrated to be able to detect normal force in the range of 0–18 N. Using the vector properties of external force, six-axis directions in three-dimensional (3D) space is detected. Additionally, it is fabricated with environmental friendly materials, i.e., galinstan and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), promoting its applications in more diversified situations. Because of the available and high output voltage as well as the low internal impedance, the self-powered sensor is readily compatible with commercial signal processing and management circuits. The device presented in this work shows robust structure and stable output performance, enabling itself as an ideal human machine interface in self-powered, batteryless, and electric energy saving applications.

Advances in flexible and multifunctional electronic devices have enabled the realization of sophisticated skin for robotics applications. In this paper, a large-scale, flexible and self-powered tactile sensing array (TSA) for sensitive robot skin is demonstrated based on the triboelectric effect. The device, with 4 × 4 sensing units, was composed of a top triboelectric polyethylene terephthalate (PET) layer, a bottom triboelectric copper (Cu) layer and a bottom PET substrate. A low-cost roll-to-roll ultraviolet embossing fabrication process was induced to pattern the large-scale top PET film with microstructures for high-output performance. The working mechanism and output performance of the triboelectric TSA were demonstrated and characterized, exhibiting good stability and high sensitivity. By integrating a tactile feedback system, the large-scale TSA, acting as intelligent skin for an industrial robot, was able to realize emergency avoidance and safety stop for various unknown obstacles under various working conditions. The system also has good real-time performance. By using a large-scale roll-to-roll fabrication method, this work pushes forward a significant step to self-powered triboelectric TSA and its potential applications in intelligent robot skin.

This paper presents a triple-finger gripper driven by a piezoceramic (PZT) transducer for multi-target micromanipulation. The gripper consists of three fingers assembled on adjustable pedestals with flexible hinges for a large adjustable range. Each finger has a PZT actuator, an amplifying structure, and a changeable end effector. The moving trajectories of single and double fingers were calculated and finite element analyses were performed to verify the reliability of the structures. In the gripping experiment, various end effectors of the fingers such as tungsten probes and fibers were tested, and different micro-objects such as glass hollow spheres and iron spheres with diameters ranging from 10 to 800 μm were picked and released. The output resolution is 145 nm/V, and the driven displacement range of the gripper is 43.4 μm. The PZT actuated triple-finger gripper has superior adaptability, high efficiency, and a low cost.

In this study, a flexible tactile sensing array based on a capacitive mechanism was designed, fabricated, and characterized for sensitive robot skin. A device with 8 × 8 sensing units was composed of top and bottom flexible polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) substrates with copper (Cu) electrodes, a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dielectric layer, and a bump contact layer. Four types of microstructures (i.e., pyramids and V-shape grooves) atop a PDMS dielectric layer were well-designed and fabricated to enhance tactile sensitivity. The optimal sensing unit achieved a high sensitivity of 35.9%/N in a force range of 0–1 N. By incorporating a tactile feedback control system, the flexible sensing array as the sensitive skin of a robotic manipulator demonstrated a potential capability of robotic obstacle avoidance.
