Ionic conductive elastomers (ICEs) are emerging stretchable and ionic conductive materials that are solvent-free and thus demonstrate excellent thermal stability. Three-dimensional (3D) printing that creates complex 3D structures in free forms is considered as an ideal approach to manufacture sophisticated ICE-based devices. The design and construction of bifunctional electrocatalysts with high activity and durability is essential for overall water splitting. Herein, a unique 3D hierarchical NiMo3S4 nanoflowers with abundant defects and reactive sites were grown directly on carbon textiles (NiMo3S4/CTs) using a facile hydrothermal synthesis method. The defect-rich NiMo3S4 nanoflakes, prepared by doping Ni2+ in the lattice of Mo-S, displays extended d-spacing of (0 0 2) crystal plane, resulting in the electrocatalytic activity of hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reaction (HER and OER) was improved under alkaline conditions. The self-supported NiMo3S4/CTs electrode delivers a small overpotential of 149.5 mV for HER and 126.2 mV for OER at 10 mA cm−2, respectively. Based on detailed structure analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the excellent HER and OER activities can be attributed to the unique structure of the nanoflowers, where the metallic characteristics for Ni-doped Mo-S lead to the enhancement of intrinsic conductivity and the rich abundance of Ni3+ active sites. As a result, the NiMo3S4/CTs as efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water-splitting was performed in alkaline electrolyte, where the system required only 1.55, 1.66 and 1.76 V to deliver current densities of 10, 50 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively. This study provides a new method for improving the electrocatalysis properties of transition metal sulfides by metal-ion doping to generate more active defect sites, thus promoting the development of non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Water plays a vital role in all aspects of life. In recent years, water pollution has increased due to various organic and inorganic pollutants caused by human activities. Organic pollutants are hard to degrade in nature. Henceforth cost-effective and sustainable approaches are needed to degrade these organic pollutants to purify wastewater. Organic dye is a major source of organic pollutants from coloring industries, which must be removed during water treatment. The photoactive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer an ultimate strategy to construct catalysts to degrade pollutants present in wastewater. Tuning the metal ions/cluster and organic ligands for better photocatalytic activity of MOFs is the need for an hour. This review comprehensively reported various MOFs, their composites, and POM-based MOF materials for the ultimate photo-degradation of various pollutants in the aqueous phase. Furthermore, special mention has been given to POM-based MOF material, which has an advantage over other materials due to their conducting behavior and high stability. A brief discussion on MOF-based photocatalysts is explored using various theoretical approaches such as density functional theory (DFT) and machine learning (ML). Although there are various article dealing with the basic concept of MOF-based photocatalyst but the area of combining design structure-activity with high-performance theoretical analysis have not been discussed in detail yet. Thus, this article eventually paved the way for applying different structural features to modulate hazardous materials’ photodegradation properties toward organic pollutants.

Layered O3 type oxides exhibit promising prospects as high-performance cathodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their low cost and high theoretical capacities. Nevertheless, the intrinsic surface composition and bulk structure degradation upon cycling presents a huge obstacle to stable sodium-ion storage/transportation. Besides, the effective surface decoration on layered O3 oxides is still challenging through conventional wet chemical route owing to their extraordinarily high surface sensitivities. Herein, a typical O3 type layered oxide of NaNi0.5Mn0.5O2 (NNMO) was selected and successfully encapsulated by precisely controlled Al2O3 layers via atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology. With the optimally controlled Al2O3 thickness of 3 nm, the surface regulated NNMO delivers a highly reversible capacity of 73.6 mA h g-1, with a significantly improved capacity retention of 68.0% after 300 cycles at 0.5 C, and a superior rate capability of 65.8 mA h g-1 at 10 C. Further air sensitivity tests demonstrate that the protective layer could effectively mitigate the generation of sodium-based impurities on NNMO, and reduce the surface sensitivities. Both chemical and electrochemical aging tests confirm the contribution of Al2O3 coating layer in alleviating ion dissolution as well as stabilizing the structure and morphology of NNMO. Based on regulating the surface of O3 type layered oxides utilizing ALD technique, this work supplies an effective and facile strategy to overcome the challenges from fast structure degradation and electrochemical property decay, which not only highlights the significance and effectiveness of surface engineering in secondary batteries, but also sheds light on accurate interface construction and regulation for active electrode materials, particularly for those sensitive to ambient atmosphere.

Metal contacts to two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are often plagued by the strong Fermi level pinning (FLP) effect which reduces the tunability of the Schottky barrier height (SBH) and degrades the performance of 2D semiconductor devices. Here, we show that MoSi2N4 and WSi2N4 monolayers—an emerging 2D semiconductor family with exceptional physical properties—exhibit strongly suppressed FLP and wide-range tunable SBH. An exceptionally large SBH slope parameter of S ≈ 0.7 is obtained which outperforms the vast majority of other 2D semiconductors. Such intriguing behavior arises from the septuple-layered morphology of MoSi2N4 and WSi2N4 monolayers in which the semiconducting electronic states are protected by the outlying Si–N sublayer. We identify Ti, Sc, and Ni as highly efficient Ohmic contacts to MoSi2N4 and WSi2N4 with zero interface tunneling barrier. Our findings reveal the potential of MoSi2N4 and WSi2N4 as a practical platform for designing high-performance and energy-efficient 2D semiconductor electronic devices.

The circadian clock plays a critical role in synchronizing the inner molecular, metabolic and physiological processes to environmental cues that cycle with a period of 24 h. Non-24 h and shift schedules are commonly used in maritime operations, and both of which can disturb circadian rhythms. In this study, we first conducted an experiment in which the volunteers followed a 3-d rotary schedule with consecutive shift in sleep time (rotatory schedule), and analyzed the changes in salivary cortisol rhythms and blood variables. Next we conducted another experiment in which the volunteers followed an 8 h-on and 4-h off schedule (non-24-h schedule) to compare the changes in blood/serum variables. The rotatory schedule led to elevated levels of serum cortisol during the early stage, and the phase became delayed during the early and late stages. Interestingly, both of the schedules caused comprehensive changes in blood/serum biochemical variables and increased phosphate levels. Furthermore, transcriptomic analysis of the plasma miRNAs from the volunteers following the rotatory schedule identified a subset of serum miRNAs targeting genes involved in circadian rhythms, sleep homeostasis, phosphate transport and multiple important physiological processes. Overexpression of miRNAs targeting the phosphate transport associated genes, SLC20A1 and SLC20A2, showed altered expression due to rotary schedule resulted in attenuated cellular levels of phosphate, which might account for the changed levels in serum phosphate. These findings would further our understanding of the deleterious effects of shift schedules and help to optimize and enhance the performances and welfare of personnel working on similar schedules.

Li metal anode holds great promise to realize high-energy battery systems. However, the uncontrollable Li dendrites formation and infinite volume changes of Li severely hinder its practical applications. Herein, a 3D conductive carbon fibre with conformal lithiophilic Zn coating (CF@Zn) is developed to guide uniform Li plating/stripping and accommodate a large amount of Li metal. Phase evolution mechanism reveals that lithiated zinc (LiZn) alloy plays the real role in regulating the Li plating. Through the conformal incorporation of LiZn alloy, the Li affinity of carbon fibre has been improved significantly, which reduces the Li nucleation barrier and enables homogeneous Li nucleation and growth surround the carbon fibre, forming a conformal CF@LiZn@Li structure at initial stage. The 3D lithiophilic CF@LiZn scaffold with interconnected pores serves as robust host for high Li loading with small volume fluctuation, resulting in a dendrite-free Li metal battery with high areal capacity (up to 12 mAh cm−2). Moreover, the CF@LiZn electrode exhibits a high Coulombic efficiency of 97.1% at 5 mA cm−2, long cycle life of 280 cycles at 2 mA cm−2 and excellent rate performance (∼70 mV voltage hysteresis at 5 mA cm−2). Furthermore, excellent cyclability and rate performance are realized in full-cell batteries with CF@LiZn–Li anode and LiFePO4 cathode. This work demonstrates a low-cost and lithiophilic alloy matrix for the fabrication of stable Li metal anode toward next-generation high-energy battery systems.

Stretchable strain sensor detects a wide range of strain variation and is therefore a key component in various applications. Unlike traditional ones made of elastomers doped with conductive components or fabricated with liquid conductors, ionically conductive hydrogel-based strain sensors remain conductive under large deformations and are biocompatible. However, dehydration is a challenging issue for the latter. Researchers have developed hydrogel-elastomer-based strain sensors where an elastomer matrix encapsulates a hydrogel circuit to prevent its dehydration. However, the reported multi-step approaches are generally time-consuming. Our group recently reported a multimaterial 3D printing approach that enables fast fabrication of such sensors, yet requires a self-built digital-light-processing-based multimaterial 3D printer. Here, we report a simple projection lithography method to fabricate hydrogel-elastomer-based stretchable strain sensors within 5 minutes. This method only requires a UV projector/lamp with photomasks; the chemicals are commercially available; the protocols for preparing the polymer precursors are friendly to users without chemistry background. Moreover, the manufacturing flexibility allows users to readily pattern the sensor circuit and attach the sensor to a 3D printed soft pneumatic actuator to enable strain sensing on the latter. The proposed approach paves a simple and versatile way to fabricate hydrogel-elastomer-based stretchable strain sensors and flexible electronic devices.
