Objectives To find out the prevalence rate of pre-myopia among primary school students in the Mianyang Science City Area, analyze its related risk factors, and thus provide a reference for local authorities to formulate policies on the prevention and control of myopia for primary school students. Methods October 2022, Cluster sampling was adopted by our research group to obtain the vision levels of 2278 primary school students employing a diopter test in the Science City Area. In addition, questionnaires were distributed to help us find the risk factors associated with pre-myopia. Results The prevalence rate of pre-myopia among primary school students in the Science City Area was 45.27%, of which 43.82% were boys and 46.92% were girls, with no statistically significant difference in the prevalence rate of myopia between boys and girls (c2 =2.171, P=0.141). Multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the main risk factors for pre-myopia were having at least one parent with severe myopia, spending less than 2 hours a day outdoors, lack of sleep looking at electronic screens for more than 1 hours, and having an improper reading and writing posture. Outdoor activity time less than 2 hours per day, lack of sleep, looking at the electronic screen for more than 1 hour per day, and incorrect reading and writing posture were all positively associated with the pre-myopia (P values < 0.05). Conclusion The Science City Area has a high prevalence rate of pre-myopia among primary school students. It is proposed that students, schools, families, and local authorities work together to increase the time spent outdoors, get adequate sleep, reduce the time spent staring at digital screens and develop scientific use of eye habits.

Abstract Increasing atmospheric moisture content is expected to intensify precipitation extremes under climate warming. However, extreme precipitation sensitivity (EPS) to temperature is complicated by the presence of reduced or hook-shaped scaling, and the underlying physical mechanisms remain unclear. Here, by using atmospheric reanalysis and climate model projections, we propose a physical decomposition of EPS into thermodynamic and dynamic components (i.e., the effects of atmospheric moisture and vertical ascent velocity) at a global scale in both historical and future climates. Unlike previous expectations, we find that thermodynamics do not always contribute to precipitation intensification, with the lapse rate effect and the pressure component partly offsetting positive EPS. Large anomalies in future EPS projections (with lower and upper quartiles of −1.9%/°C and 8.0%/°C) are caused by changes in updraft strength (i.e., the dynamic component), with a contrast of positive anomalies over oceans and negative anomalies over land areas. These findings reveal counteracting effects of atmospheric thermodynamics and dynamics on EPS, and underscore the importance of understanding precipitation extremes by decomposing thermodynamic effects into more detailed terms.

Abstract Since the successful clinical trial of AuroShell for photothermal therapy, there is currently intense interest in developing gold-based core-shell structures with near-infrared (NIR) absorption ranging from NIR-I (650–900 nm) to NIR-II (900–1700 nm). Here, we propose a seed-mediated successive growth approach to produce gold nanoshells on the surface of the nanoscale metal–organic framework (NMOF) of UiO-66-NH2 (UiO = the University of Oslo) in one pot. The key to this strategy is to modulate the proportion of the formaldehyde (reductant) and its regulator / oxidative product of formic acid to harness the particle nucleation and growth rate within the same system. The gold nanoshells propagate through a well-oriented and controllable diffusion growth pattern (points → facets → octahedron), which has not been identified. Most strikingly, the gold nanoshells prepared hereby exhibit an exceedingly broad and strong absorption in NIR-II with a peak beyond 1300 nm and outstanding photothermal conversion efficiency of 74.0%. Owing to such superior performance, these gold nanoshells show promising outcomes in photoacoustic (PA), computed tomography (CT), and photothermal imaging-guided photothermal therapy (PTT) for breast cancer, as demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo.

In Einstein-Æther theory, the Lorentz symmetry is locally broken in the high-energy regime due to the presence of the Æther field. This shall leave significant imprint on astronomical observation. In this paper, we investigate the optical appearance of two types of the static and spherically symmetric black holes in Einstein-Æther theory. Via Euler-Lagrange equation, we obtain the equations of motion of the photon and calculate the total deflection angle of the photon trajectory around the black hole. By classifying the light rays with the total number of orbits, we study the effects of coupling constants on the direct image, lensing ring, and photon ring. The features of the light trajectories are also investigated by comparing with the Einstein-Æther theory and general relativity. Moreover, we also show the explicit optical appearance of black holes surrounded by thin disk emissions with three characteristic emitted models. The results indicate that the direct image gives the main contribution to the total flux, and the lensing ring just gives a very small contribution, whereas the role of the photon ring is negligible. The optical appearances are also found to significantly rely on these coupling constants.

Abstract Background Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are key regulators in the processes of tumor initiation, progression, and recurrence. The mechanism that maintains their stemness remains enigmatic, although the role of several long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) has been highlighted in the pancreatic cancer stem cells (PCSCs). In this study, we first established that PCSCs overexpressing lncRNA NORAD, and then investigated the effects of NORAD on the maintenance of PCSC stemness. Methods Expression of lncRNA NORAD, miR-202-5p and ANP32E in PC tissues and cell lines was quantified after RNA isolation. Dual-luciferase reporter assay, RNA pull-down and RIP assays were performed to verify the interactions among NORAD, miR-202-5p and ANP32E. We then carried out gain- and loss-of function of miR-202-5p, ANP32E and NORAD in PANC-1 cell line, followed by measurement of the aldehyde dehydrogenase activity, cell viability, apoptosis, cell cycle distribution, colony formation, self-renewal ability and tumorigenicity of PC cells. Results LncRNA NORAD and ANP32E were upregulated in PC tissues and cells, whereas the miR-202-5p level was down-regulated. LncRNA NORAD competitively bound to miR-202-5p, and promoted the expression of the miR-202-5p target gene ANP32E thereby promoting PC cell viability, proliferation, and self-renewal ability in vitro, as well as facilitating tumorigenesis of PCSCs in vivo. Conclusion Overall, lncRNA NORAD upregulates ANP32E expression by competitively binding to miR-202-5, which accelerates the proliferation and self-renewal of PCSCs.

Abstract Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a heterogeneous tumor with an increased incidence worldwide accompanied by high mortality and dismal prognosis. Emerging evidence indicates that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)-derived exosomes possess protective effects against various human diseases by transporting microRNAs (miRNAs or miRs). We aimed to explore the role of exosomal miR-15a derived from MSCs and its related mechanisms in HCC. Exosomes were isolated from transduced MSCs and co-incubated with Hep3B and Huh7 cells. miR-15a expression was examined by RT-qPCR in HCC cells, MSCs, and secreted exosomes. CCK-8, transwell, and flow cytometry were used to detect the effects of miR-15a or spalt-like transcription factor 4 (SALL4) on cell proliferative, migrating, invasive, and apoptotic properties. A dual-luciferase reporter gene assay was performed to validate the predicted targeting relationship of miR-15a with SALL4. Finally, in vivo experiments in nude mice were implemented to assess the impact of exosome-delivered miR-15a on HCC. The exosomes from MSCs restrained HCC cell proliferative, migrating, and invasive potentials, and accelerated their apoptosis. miR-15a was expressed at low levels in HCC cells and could bind to SALL4, thus curtailing the proliferative, migrating, and invasive abilities of HCC cells. Exosomes successfully delivered miR-15a to HCC cells. Exosomal miR-15a depressed tumorigenicity and metastasis of HCC tumors in vivo. Overall, exosomal miR-15a from MSCs can downregulate SALL4 expression and thereby retard HCC development.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains an extremely lethal disease worldwide. High-throughput methods have revealed global transcriptome dysregulation; however, a comprehensive investigation of the complexity and behavioral characteristics of the competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network in HCC is lacking. In this study, we extracted the transcriptome (RNA) sequencing data of 371 HCC patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas platform. With the comparison of the high Myc expression (Mychigh) tumor and low Myc expression (Myclow) tumor groups in HCC, we identified 1,125 differentially expressed (DE) mRNAs, 589 long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and 93 microRNAs (miRNAs). DE RNAs predicted the interactions necessary to construct an associated Myc ceRNA network, including 19 DE lncRNAs, 5 miRNAs, and 72 mRNAs. We identified a significant signature (long intergenic non-protein-coding [LINC] RNA 2691 [LINC02691] and LINC02499) that effectively predicted overall survival and had protective effects. The target genes of microRNA (miR)-212-3p predicted to intersect with DE mRNAs included SEC14-like protein 2 (SEC14L2) and solute carrier family 6 member 1 (SLC6A1), which were strongly correlated with survival and prognosis. With the use of the lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA axis, we constructed a ceRNA network containing four lncRNAs (LINC02691, LINC02499, LINC01354, and NAV2 antisense RNA 4), one miRNA (miR-212-3p), and two mRNAs (SEC14L2 and SLC6A1). Overall, we successfully constructed a mutually regulated ceRNA network and identified potential precision-targeted therapies and prognostic biomarkers.

Cancer accounted for 16% of all death worldwide in 2018. Significant progress has been made in understanding tumor occurrence, progression, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis at the molecular level. However, genomics changes cannot truly reflect the state of protein activity in the body due to the poor correlation between genes and proteins. Quantitative proteomics, capable of quantifying the relatively different protein abundance in cancer patients, has been increasingly adopted in cancer research. Quantitative proteomics has great application potentials, including cancer diagnosis, personalized therapeutic drug selection, real-time therapeutic effects and toxicity evaluation, prognosis and drug resistance evaluation, and new therapeutic target discovery. In this review, the development, testing samples, and detection methods of quantitative proteomics are introduced. The biomarkers identified by quantitative proteomics for clinical diagnosis, prognosis, and drug resistance are reviewed. The challenges and prospects of quantitative proteomics for personalized medicine are also discussed.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the deadliest malignant tumors that are harmful to human health. Increasing evidence has underscored the critical role of the competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) regulatory networks among various human cancers. However, the complexity and behavior characteristics of the ceRNA network in HCC were still unclear. In this study, we aimed to clarify a phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN)-related ceRNA regulatory network and identify potential prognostic markers associated with HCC. The expression profiles of three RNAs (long non-coding RNAs [lncRNAs], microRNAs [miRNAs], and mRNAs) were extracted from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. The DLEU2L-hsa-miR-100-5p/ hsa-miR-99a-5p-TAOK1 ceRNA network related to the prognosis of HCC was obtained by performing bioinformatics analysis. Importantly, we identified the DLEU2L/TAOK1 axis in the ceRNA by using correlation analysis, and it appeared to become a clinical prognostic model by Cox regression analysis. Furthermore, methylation analyses suggested that the abnormal upregulation of the DLEU2L/TAOK1 axis likely resulted from hypomethylation, and immune infiltration analysis showed that the DLEU2L/TAOK1 axis may have an impact on the changes in the tumor immune microenvironment and the development of HCC. In summary, the current study constructing a ceRNA-based DLEU2L/TAOK1 axis might be a novel important prognostic factor associated with the diagnosis and prognosis of HCC.

The brief report describes an exploratory investigation into changes to three university EFL teachers' teaching practices in a research-intensive university framed by managerialist technologies to improve its visibility and global ranking. The findings revealed that substantial changes have been brought about to their teaching practices in terms of falling into the routine of 'technification of teaching', producing a spectacle 'what is there simply to be seen and judged' or striving to seek out new spaces for 'authentic' English teaching. The study concluded with implications for facilitating the managerial reforms that are congruent with the cognitive and contextual realities of different generations of Chinese university EFL teachers.

Long-chain non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are RNA molecules with a length greater than 200 nt and no function of encoding proteins. lncRNAs play a precise regulatory function at different levels of transcription and post-transcription, and they interact with various regulatory factors to regulate gene expression, and then participate in cell growth, differentiation, apoptosis, and other life processes. In recent years, studies have shown that the abnormal expression of lncRNAs is closely related to the occurrence and development of tumors, which is expected to become an effective biomarker in tumor diagnosis. The sequencing analysis of mutations in the whole tumor genome suggests that mutations in non-coding regions may play an important role in the occurrence and development of tumors. Therefore, in-depth study of lncRNAs is helpful to clarify the molecular mechanism of tumor occurrence and development and to provide new targets for tumor diagnosis and treatment. This review introduces the molecular mechanism and clinical application prospect of lncRNAs affecting tumor development from the perspective of gene expression and regulation.

To systematically evaluate the whole-transcriptome sequencing data of cholangiocarcinoma (CHOL) to gain more insights into the transcriptomic landscape and molecular mechanism of this cancer, we performed whole-transcriptome sequencing based on the tumorous (C) and their corresponding non-tumorous adjacent to the tumors (CP) from eight CHOL patients. Subsequently, differential expression analysis was performed on the C and CP groups, followed by functional interaction prediction analysis to investigate gene-regulatory circuits in CHOL. In addition, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) for CHOL data was used to validate the results. In total, 2,895 differentially expressed messenger RNAs (dif-mRNAs), 56 differentially expressed microRNAs (dif-miRNAs), 151 differentially expressed long non-coding RNAs (dif-lncRNAs), and 110 differentially expressed circular RNAs (dif-circRNAs) were found in CHOL samples compared with controls. Enrichment analysis on those differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to miRNA, lncRNA, and circRNA also identified the function of spliceosome. The downregulated hsa-miR-144-3p were significantly enriched in the competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) complex network, which also included 7 upregulated and 13 downregulated circRNAs, 7 upregulated lncRNAs, and 90 upregulated and 40 downregulated mRNAs. Moreover, most of the DEGs and a few of the miRNAs (such as hsa-miR-144-3p) were successfully validated by TCGA data. The genes involved in RNA splicing and protein degradation processes and miR-144-3p may play fundamental roles in the pathogenesis of CHOL.

Numerous studies have suggested that dysregulated long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) contributed to the development and progression of many cancers. lncRNA OIP5 antisense RNA 1 (OIP5-AS1) has been reported to be increased in several cancers. However, the roles of OIP5-AS1 in liver hepatocellular carcinoma (LIHC) remain to be investigated. In this study, we demonstrated that OIP5-AS1 was upregulated in LIHC tissue specimens and its overexpression was associated with the poor survival of patients with LIHC. Furthermore, loss-of function experiments indicated that OIP5-AS1 promoted cell proliferation and inhibited cell apoptosis both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, binding sites between OIP5-AS1 and hsa-miR-26a-3p as well as between hsa-miR-26a-3p and EPHA2 were confirmed by luciferase assays. Finally, a rescue assay was performed to prove the effect of the OIP5-AS1/hsa-miR-26a-3p/EPHA2 axis on LIHC cell biological behaviors. Based on all of the above findings, our results suggested that OIP5-AS1 promoted LIHC cell proliferation and invasion via regulating the hsa-miR-26a-3p/EPHA2 axis.

Lung cancer is listed as the most common reason for cancer-related death all over the world despite diagnostic improvements and the development of chemotherapy and targeted therapies. MicroRNAs control both physiological and pathological processes including development and cancer. A microRNA-9 to 1 (miR-9 to 1) overexpression model in lung cancer cell lines was established and miR-9 to 1 was found to significantly suppress the proliferation rate in lung cancer cell lines, colony formation in vitro, and tumorigenicity in nude mice of A549 cells. Ubiquitin-like containing PHD and RING finger domains 1 (UHRF1) was then identified to direct target of miR-9 to 1. The inhibition of UHRF1 by miR-9 to 1 causes G1 arrest and p15, p16, and p21 were re-expressed in miR-9 to 1 group in mRNA level and protein level. Silence of UHRF1 expression in A549 cells resulted in the similar re-expression of p15, p16, p21 which is similar with miR-9 to 1 infection. Therefore, we concluded that UHRF1 is a new target for miR-9 to 1 to suppress cell proliferation by re-expression of tumor suppressors p15, p16, and p21 mediated by UHRF1.

As organ-specific three-dimensional cell clusters derived from cancer tissue or cancer-specific stem cells, cancer-derived organoids are organized in the same manner of the cell sorting and spatial lineage restriction in vivo, making them ideal for simulating the characteristics of cancer and the heterogeneity of cancer cells in vivo. Besides the applications as a new in vitro model to study the physiological characteristics of normal tissues and organs, organoids are also used for in vivo cancer cell characterization, anti-cancer drug screening, and precision medicine. However, organoid cultures are not without limitations, i.e., the lack of nerves, blood vessels, and immune cells. As a result, organoids could not fully replicate the characteristics of organs but partially simulate the disease process. This review attempts to provide insights into the organoid models for cancer precision medicine.

Abstract. Background:. Clinical assessment and treatment guidance for heart failure depends on a variety of biomarkers. The objective of this study was to investigate the prognostic predictive value of growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) and N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in assessing hospitalized patients with acute heart failure (AHF). Methods:. In total, 260 patients who were admitted for AHF in the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University were enrolled from April 2012 to May 2016. Medical history and blood samples were collected within 24 h after the admission. The primary endpoint was the all-cause mortality within 1 year. The patients were divided into survival group and death group based on the endpoint. With established mortality risk factors and serum GDF-15 level, receiver-operator characteristic (ROC) analyses were performed. Cox regression analyses were used to further analyze the combination values of NT-proBNP and GDF-15. Results:. A new scoring system Outcomes Registry for Better Informed Treatment (ORBIT) score is used to assess the bleeding risk in anticoagulated patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Our aim is to investigate the possible correlations of the ORBIT score with 30-day mortality in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). A total of 639 patients with STEMI were enrolled in this study. The ORBIT, HAS-BLED, and TIMI scores were recorded during admission. After 30 days’ follow-up, 639 patients were divided into 2 groups: the survival group and the nonsurvival group. Different clinical parameters were compared. The predictive values of the ORBIT, HAS-BLED, and TIMI scores for 30-day mortality were assessed from receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses. The univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards analyses were applied to evaluate the relationships between variables and 30-day mortality. Sixty-seven deaths occurred after a 30-day follow-up. The ORBIT, HAS-BLED, and TIMI scores in the death group were higher than those in the survival group ( P < .05). The areas under the ROC curve for the ORBIT, HAS-BLED, and TIMI scores to predict the occurrence of 30-day mortality were 0.811 (95% CI: 0.779-0.841, P < .0001), 0.717 (95% CI: 0.680-0.752, P < .0001), and 0.844 (95% CI: 0.813-0.871, P < .0001), respectively. In multivariate Cox proportional hazards modeling, the high ORBIT score was positively associated with 30-day mortality (hazard ratio: 1.309, 95% CI: 1.101-1.556, P = .013) after adjustment. A graded relation is found in the elevated ORBIT score and 30-day mortality in patients with STEMI. Thus, the ORBIT score can be an independent predictor of 30-day mortality in patients with STEMI.

Abstract The quantification of climate change impacts on hydrology is subjected to multiple uncertainty sources. Large ensembles of hydrological simulations based on multimodel ensembles (MMEs) have been commonly applied to represent overall uncertainty of hydrological impacts. However, as increasing numbers of global climate models (GCMs) are being developed, how many GCMs in MMEs are sufficient to characterize overall uncertainty is not clear. Therefore, this study investigates the influences of GCM quantity on quantifying overall uncertainty and uncertainty contributions of multiple sources in hydrological impacts. Large ensembles of hydrological simulations are obtained through the permutation of 3 greenhouse gas emission scenarios, 22 GCMs, 6 downscaling techniques, 5 hydrological models (HMs), and 5 sets of HM parameters, which enables to decompose uncertainty components using analysis of variance. The influences of GCM quantity are investigated by repeatedly conducting uncertainty decomposition for hydrological simulations from subsets with different numbers of GCMs. The results show that GCMs are the leading uncertainty sources in evaluating changes in annual and peak streamflows, while for changes in low flow, other uncertainty sources except HM parameters also have large contributions to overall uncertainty. Furthermore, on the condition of using no more than five GCMs, there are large possibilities that the overall uncertainty and GCMs' uncertainty contribution are underestimated. Using around 10 GCMs can ensure that the median of different combinations generates similar uncertainty components as the whole ensemble. Therefore, it is recommended to use at least 10 GCMs in studies of climate change impacts on hydrology to thoroughly quantify uncertainty.

Background/Aims: Micro RNAs (miRNAs) play a very important role in myocardial ischemia/ reperfusion injury (MIRI), including in inflammation, apoptosis, and angiogenesis. Previous studies have demonstrated up-regulation of miR-327 in renal ischemia/reperfusion injury and MIRI. Via TargetScan, we found RP105 is a possible target gene of miR-327; our previous studies have also confirmed that RP105 acted as a cardioprotective protein in MIRI by reducing inflammation. However, the regulatory effect of miR-327 on RP105 has not previously been proposed. In our study, we aimed to identify the regulatory effect of miR-327 on RP105 protein in MIRI rats. Methods: Sixty male Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups, which were pre-treated with saline (sham and ischemia/reperfusion group), adenovirus-expressing miR-327-RNAi (Ad-miR-327-i group), control (Ad-NC group), or pri-miR-327 (Ad-miR-327 group) treatments. Three days later, the rat MIRI model was established by ischemia for 30 min, followed by reperfusion for 3 h. Myocardium and plasma were harvested and assessed. Results: miR-327 was increased by nearly 3-fold both in myocardium and plasma, which down-regulated RP105 in a 3′-untranslated region-dependent manner, and down-regulation of miR-327 via adenovirus transfection indirectly suppressed the TLR4/ TLR2-MyD88-NF-κB signaling axis activation via up-regulation of RP105, which subsequently resulted in reduced myocardial infarct size, attenuated cardiomyocyte destruction, and alleviated inflammation. In contrast, up-regulation of miR-327 induced the opposite effect. Conclusion: Down-regulation of miR-327 exerts a cardioprotective effect against MIRI by reducing inflammation, which may constitute a promising molecular therapeutic target for treating MIRI.

Objective: Coronary artery calcification (CAC) is thought to be a controlled metabolic process that is very similar to the formation of new bone. In patients with chronic renal failure (CRF), CAC is very common, and CAC severity correlates with the deterioration of renal function. We summarized the current understanding and emerging findings of the relationship between CAC and CRF. Data Sources: All studies were identified by systematically searching PubMed, Embase, and CNKI databases for the terms “coronary calcification”, “chronic renal failure”, “vascular smooth muscle cell”, and their synonyms until September 2017. Study Selection: We examined the titles and abstracts of all studies that met our search strategy thoroughly. The full text of relevant studies was evaluated. Reference lists of retrieved articles were also scrutinized for the additional relevant studies. Results: CRF can accelerate CAC progression. CRF increases the expression of pro-inflammatory factors, electrolyte imbalance (e.g., of calcium, phosphorus), parathyroid hormone, and uremic toxins and their ability to promote calcification. These factors, through the relevant signaling pathways, trigger vascular smooth muscle cells to transform into osteoblast-like cells while inhibiting the reduction of vascular calcification factors, thus inducing further CAC. Conclusions: Coronary heart disease in patients with CRF is due to multiple factors. Understanding the mechanism of CAC can help interventionists to protect the myocardium and reduce the prevalence of coronary heart disease and mortality.

Results The prevalence rate of pre-myopia among primary school students in the Science City Area was 45.27% (1020/2253), of which 43.82% were boys and 46.92% were girls, with no statisti cally significant difference in the prevalence rate of myopia between boys and girls (2 =2.171, P=0.141). The results of the linear trend test showed that the prevalence rate of pre-myopia tends to decrease with increasing age (Z=296.521, P=0.000). Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the main risk factors for pre-myopia were having at least one parent with myopia, spending less than 2 hours a day outdoors, using the eyes continuously for more than 1 hour, looking at electronic screens for more than 2 hours, and having an improper reading and writing posture. Conclusion The Science City Area has a high prevalence rate of pre-myopia among primary school students. It is proposed that students, schools, families, and local authorities work together to increase the time spent outdoors, reduce digital screens and develop scientific use of eye habits. Phosphorus (P) is a key limiting nutrient in subtropical forests and mixed forests with broadleaved species have been expected to stimulate P cycling, compared to pure conifer plantations. However, the mixture effect of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.) and broadleaved species on rhizosphere soil and coniferous tree P dynamics is unclear. In our study, eight plots of a single species of a Chinese fir plantation (pure plantation, PP) and eight mixed plantations (mixed plantation, MP) with broadleaved tree species (Michelia macclurei Dandy in Hunan Province or Schima superba Gardn. et Champ. in Fujian Province) were selected in subtropical China. Six P fractions in the rhizosphere and bulk soils were analyzed by a modified Hedley P fractionation method. Phosphorus fractions and nitrogen (N) concentrations in different root orders, different age fresh needles and twigs, and needle and twig litter of Chinese fir were measured. Our results showed that available P, slowly released P, occluded P, and the total extractable P in rhizosphere soil were significantly higher in MP than PP (p < 0.05). In contrast, P and N concentrations in the transportive roots and two-year old needles were generally higher in PP than MP. Meanwhile, the slowly released P, occluded P, total extractable P, and residual P in rhizosphere soil were negatively correlated with P concentrations in young (absorptive and transportive roots, one- and two-year old needles) but not old tissues (storative roots, three-year old needles and litters). In conclusion, mixture may increase soil P availability through the rhizosphere effect, but can decrease P and N concentration of Chinese fir tissues by competition between Chinese fir and broadleaved species. Clearly, the mixture effect may differ in soil and plant nutrients, and this issue needs be taken into consideration when converting a pure conifer plantation into a mixed-species forest.
