Abstract Background Fibrosis is the ultimate, common pathological ending of most chronic inflammatory diseases and increases the chances of developing life-threatening illnesses. Pyroptosis, a newfound form of lytic programmed cell death initiated by the inflammasome, has received more and more attention because of its association with fibrotic diseases. Therefore, this study visualizes the connection between pyroptosis and fibrosis research through bibliometric methods, aimed at providing global research hits and tendencies in the field. Methods We collected and analyzed the articles on pyroptosis and fibrosis from 2010 to 2024 via Web of Science. Visual data analysis was performed for countries, institutions, authors, references, and keywords in the field using VOSviewer, CiteSpace software, the “Bibliometrix” R package, the bibliometric website ( https://bibliometric.com/ ), and Excel software. We analyzed the data by utilizing the bibliometric review method. Results A total of 566 articles and reviews relating to pyroptosis and fibrosis were identified in the Web of Science. The number of publications in the domain has continued to grow since 2010. These scientific outputs were mainly from 129 countries/regions and 1919 institutions, particularly China (n = 423) and the USA (n = 83). More importantly, although China publishes a vast majority of articles, its centrality is lower than that of the USA (0.59 vs 0.61). Among the 3833 authors involved in this field, Feldstein, A. E. is the most prolific author. Shi, J. J. is the world’s most-cited author among the 12,143 authors in these academic journals. Frontiers in Immunology was a prolific contributor, and Nature was the most frequently cited journal. After analysis, Cleavage of GSDMD by inflammatory caspases determines pyroptotic cell death were the top-cited articles. The analysis of keywords displayed that pyroptosis, fibrosis, and pathways were the main research hotspots and frontier directions in recent years. Conclusion We analyzed the characteristics of published articles and drew a fundamental knowledge structure on pyroptosis and fibrosis research via bibliometric analysis. The potential mechanism between fibrosis and pyroptosis is deeply tied to the current moment. Our findings can help researchers make clear the research status and value of fibrosis and pyroptosis and provide new directions for future research as soon as possible.

Leaf senescence is the final stage of leaf development, where the nutrients and energy of senescent leaves are redistributed to developing tissues or organs for plant growth, reproduction, and defense. Outer leaves are photosynthetic organs that usually senesce at the late heading stage in Chinese cabbage, and premature leaf senescence often reduces leafy head yield and quality. In this study, 11 premature leaf senescence mutants were screened from an ethyl methanesulfonate-mutagenized population of the double haploid line ‘FT’ in Chinese cabbage. At the early heading stage, the mutants exhibited edge yellowing within its outer leaves, and at the mature stage, its leafy head weight decreased significantly. Genetic analysis revealed that the mutated trait of all 11 mutants corresponds to single gene recessive inheritance. Semi-diallel cross tests showed that 5 of the 11 were allelic mutants. MutMap and Kompetitive Allele Specific PCR genotyping revealed that BraA01g001400.3C was the candidate gene, which is orthologous of Arabidopsis SUPPRESSOR OF rps4-RLD 1, encoding an immune regulator, so we named it as BrSRFR1. All the BrSRFR1 in the five allelic mutants exhibited single nucleotide polymorphisms at different positions on their exons and led to premature translation termination, which confirmed that defect in BrSRFR1 led to premature leaf senescence. These results verify the role of BrSRFR1 on leaf senescence and provide a new insight into the mechanisms of leaf senescence in Chinese cabbage, which reveals a novel function of SRFR1 in plant development.

Abstract Purpose To evaluate the safety and efficacy of intravitreal dexamethasone implantation during phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in pediatric uveitis. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on pediatric uveitis patients undergoing phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation with intravitreal dexamethasone implantation. Patients with a minimum follow-up of 6 months were included. Primary outcome measures included ocular inflammation, intraocular pressure (IOP), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and worsening of uveitis. Results 36 eyes of 28 patients were ultimately included in this study. The mean preoperative BCVA was 1.00 (0.40–1.50) LogMAR. BCVA significantly improved to 0.40 (0.20–0.54) LogMAR at 1 month postoperatively (P = 0.006), further improving to 0.30 (0.20–0.40) LogMAR at 3 months postoperatively (P = 0.001). BCVA remained stable at 0.30 (0.20–0.70) LogMAR at 6 months postoperatively (P = 0.005). Mean IOP showed no statistically significant difference during the follow-up period of three to six months after surgery. Eight children experienced recurrence of ocular inflammation during the 6-month follow-up period. No cases of worsening macular edema, glaucoma, or elevated IOP were observed in any patient. Conclusion Intravitreal dexamethasone implantation during phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation is a safe and effective method for preventing and treating postoperative inflammation in children with uveitis.

Abstract The genetic analysis of potato is hampered by the complexity of tetrasomic inheritance. An ongoing effort aims to transform the clonally propagated tetraploid potato into a seed-propagated diploid crop, which would make genetic analyses much easier owing to disomic inheritance. Here, we construct and report the large-scale genetic and heterotic characteristics of a diploid F2 potato population derived from the cross of two highly homozygous inbred lines. We investigate 20,382 traits generated from multi-omics dataset and identify 25,770 quantitative trait loci (QTLs). Coupled with gene expression data, we construct a systems-genetics network for gene discovery in potatoes. Importantly, we explore the genetic basis of heterosis in this population, especially for yield and male fertility heterosis. We find that positive heterotic effects of yield-related QTLs and negative heterotic effects of metabolite QTLs (mQTLs) contribute to yield heterosis. Additionally, we identify a PME gene with a dominance heterotic effect that plays an important role in male fertility heterosis. This study provides genetic resources for the potato community and will facilitate the application of heterosis in diploid potato breeding.

Abstract Background Microcirculation abnormality in septic shock is closely associated with organ dysfunction and mortality rate. It was hypothesized that the arterial blood glucose and interstitial fluid (ISF) glucose difference (GA−I) as a marker for assessing the microcirculation status can effectively evaluate the severity of microcirculation disturbance in patients with septic shock. Methods The present observational study enrolled patients with septic shock admitted to and treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a tertiary teaching hospital. The parameters reflecting organ and tissue perfusion, including lactic acid (Lac), skin mottling score, capillary refill time (CRT), venous-to-arterial carbon dioxide difference (Pv-aCO2), urine volume, central venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2) and GA−I of each enrolled patient were recorded at the time of enrollment (H0), H2, H4, H6, and H8. With ICU mortality as the primary outcome measure, the ICU mortality rate at any GA−I interval was analyzed. Results A total of 43 septic shock patients were included, with median sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) scores of 10.5 (6–16), and median Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHAE) II scores of 25.7 (9–40), of whom 18 died during ICU stay. Abstract Purpose To assess the interactive relationship between blood pressure status and diabetic mellitus (DM) with ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness in elderly individuals in rural China. Methods Participants aged 50 years and older in a rural area of Daxing District, Beijing, were recruited in this study from October 2018 to November 2018. All subjects underwent a comprehensive systemic and ocular examination. Blood pressure status was graded as normotension, controlled hypertension and uncontrolled hypertension according to blood pressure measurements and the use of any medication for hypertension treatment. GCC parameters were measured by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Generalized linear models (GLM) adjusted for related potential confounders were used to assess the interaction between DM and blood pressure status. Results Among 1415 screened subjects (2830 eyes), a total of 1117 eyes were enrolled in the final analysis. GLM analysis showed a significant interactive relationship between DM with uncontrolled hypertension status (β = 3.868, p = 0.011). Abstract Background Logsplitter Injury is a type of high-energy ankle fracture dislocation. The mechanism of injury has not been described in detail. A detailed understanding of the radiological features and pathological changes can further guide treatment. Methods Between April 2009 and December 2018, a retrospective analysis was conducted on 62 patients with Logsplitter injury. The study analysed the characteristics of fibular injury, tibial injury, syndesmosis injury, medial injury and lateral ligament injury on preoperative X-ray and CT scans. The incidence of the different injury types was summarised. The correlation between Logsplitter injuries and the mechanisms causing them were analysed using the Lauge-Hansen classification of ankle fractures. Results The study provides data on the types of fractures observed. Of the total fractures, 98.4% were open fractures. The fibula injuries were classified as no fracture (1.6%), transverse or short oblique fractures (61.3%), butterfly fragments (25.8%), and comminuted fractures (11.3%). The tibial injuries included compression of lateral articular surfaces (38.7%) and posterior compressions (6.5%). Medial injuries, including medial malleolar fractures, accounted for 87.1%, and deltoid ligament rupture accounted for 12.9%. The study found that injuries to the syndesmosis consisted of simple ligament ruptures (11.3%), Tillaux fractures (8.1%), Volkmann fractures (43.5%), and Tillaux and Volkmann fractures (37.1%). In 12.9% of cases, there was a complete rupture of the lateral collateral ligament. Based on the Lauge-Hansen classification, 87.1% of injuries were pronation-abduction injuries, while 8.1% were pronation and external rotation injuries, and 1.6% were supination external rotation injuries. Furthermore, 3.2% of cases could not be classified. Conclusion The pathoanatomic characteristics of Logsplitter injury are diverse, with some cases accompanied by collateral ligament injury. It is important to note that these evaluations are objective and based on current results. The most common injury mechanism is vertical violence combined with abduction, although in some cases, it may be a vertical combined external-rotation injury. Level of evidence (4) case series. Polyploidy is a major factor in the evolution of plants, yet we know little about the origin and evolution of polyploidy in intertidal species. This study aimed to identify the evolutionary transitions in three true-mangrove species of the genus Acanthus distributed in the Indo–West Pacific region. For this purpose, we took an integrative approach that combined data on morphology, cytology, climatic niche, phylogeny, and biogeography of 493 samples from 42 geographic sites. Our results show that the Acanthus ilicifolius lineage distributed east of the Thai–Malay Peninsula possesses a tetraploid karyotype, which is morphologically distinct from that of the lineage on the west side. The haplotype networks and phylogenetic trees for the chloroplast genome and eight nuclear genes reveal that the tetraploid species has two sub-genomes, one each from A. ilicifolius and A. ebracteatus, the paternal and maternal parents, respectively. Population structure analysis also supports the hybrid speciation history of the new tetraploid species. The two sub-genomes of the tetraploid species diverged from their diploid progenitors during the Pleistocene. Environmental niche models revealed that the tetraploid species not only occupied the near-entire niche space of the diploids, but also expanded into novel environments. Our findings suggest that A. ilicifolius species distributed on the east side of the Thai–Malay Peninsula should be regarded as a new species, A. tetraploideus, which originated from hybridization between A. ilicifolius and A. ebracteatus, followed by chromosome doubling. This is the first report of a true-mangrove allopolyploid species that can reproduce sexually and clonally reproduction, which explains the long-term adaptive potential of the species.

Abstract Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a chronic and inflammatory mucosal disease caused by betel quid chewing, which belongs to oral potentially malignant disorders. Abnormal fibroblast differentiation leading to disordered collagen metabolism is the core process underlying OSF development. The epithelium, which is the first line of defense against the external environment, can convert external signals into pathological signals and participate in the remodeling of the fibrotic microenvironment. However, the specific mechanisms by which the epithelium drives fibroblast differentiation remain unclear. In this study, we found that Arecoline-exposed epithelium communicated with the fibrotic microenvironment by secreting exosomes. MiR-17-5p was encapsulated in epithelial cell-derived exosomes and absorbed by fibroblasts, where it promoted cell secretion, contraction, migration and fibrogenic marker (α-SMA and collagen type I) expression. The underlying molecular mechanism involved miR-17-5p targeting Smad7 and suppressing the degradation of TGF-β receptor 1 (TGFBR1) through the E3 ubiquitination ligase WWP1, thus facilitating downstream TGF-β pathway signaling. Treatment of fibroblasts with an inhibitor of miR-17-5p reversed the contraction and migration phenotypes induced by epithelial-derived exosomes. Exosomal miR-17-5p was confirmed to function as a key regulator of the phenotypic transformation of fibroblasts. In conclusion, we demonstrated that Arecoline triggers aberrant epithelium-fibroblast crosstalk and identified that epithelial cell-derived miR-17-5p mediates fibroblast differentiation through the classical TGF-β fibrotic pathway, which provided a new perspective and strategy for the diagnosis and treatment of OSF.

Abstract Background This study explores prognostic factors influencing Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease and observes the efficacy and safety of Adalimumab (ADA) in treating recurrence in Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) patients. Methods A retrospective study was conducted on all patients diagnosed with VKH disease at Beijing Tongren Hospital between 2020 and 2023. Clinical data included initial and final visual acuity, age, gender, ocular complications, treatment modalities, disease duration, and recurrence frequency. Results A total of 62 VKH patients were included, comprising 34 in the acute-resolved group and 28 in the chronic-recurrent group. The mean age of patients in the acute-resolved group was 38.29 ± 15.46 years, while the mean age of chronic-recurrent group had a 49.00 ± 16.43 years. Initial best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) examination at the first visit showed an average BCVA of 0.64 ± 0.29 logMAR in the acute-resolved group and 1.38 ± 0.54 logMAR in the chronic-recurrent group (p = 0.002). During follow-up, ocular complications were observed in 29.4% of the acute-resolved group patients and 41.7% of the chronic-recurrent group patients (P = 0.006). “Sunset glow fundus” was observed in 23.5% of the acute-resolved group and 64.3% of the chronic-recurrent group patients (P = 0.001). Poor initial BCVA (P = 0.046) and the occurrence of “sunset glow fundus” (P = 0.040) were significantly associated with progression to the chronic recurrent phase. Logistic regression analysis revealed that older age at onset (P = 0.042) and the occurrence of “sunset glow fundus” (P = 0.037) were significant predictors for progression to the chronic recurrent phase. ADA significantly reduced anterior chamber inflammatory cells (P = 0.000) and vitreous cavity inflammatory cells (P = 0.001) in the chronic-recurrent group, and markedly decreased the recurrence rate in VKH patients (P = 0.009). Conclusion In comparison to acute-resolved patients, chronic-recurrent patients exhibited poorer initial BCVA and a significantly increased incidence of “sunset glow fundus.” Older age at onset and the occurrence of “sunset glow fundus” at diagnosis are crucial predictive factors for VKH patients progressing to the chronic recurrent phase. ADA effectively alleviates refractory VKH disease and is generally well-tolerated.

AimsThis study investigated the current status of intrinsic capacity and self-management abilities and analyzed the factors influencing the self-management abilities of older adults experiencing intrinsic capacity decline.MethodsWe included a sample of 382 older adults, with an average age of 72.92 ± 6.81 years, exhibiting intrinsic capacity decline in 38 communities in China. Questionnaires were administered using the sociodemographic questionnaire, the intrinsic capacity questionnaire, the social support scale, the self-rated health item, the eHealth literacy scale, and the self-management ability scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and linear regression analysis.ResultsIn this study, 43.5% of older people had impairments in three of the five dimensions of intrinsic capacity, the most significant proportion. The self-management ability score of older adults experiencing intrinsic capacity decline was 67.05 ± 12.53 out of 100. Aroma is a key sensory factor in the flavor evaluation of pak choi (Brassica rapa L. ssp. chinensis var. Makino). The pak choi varieties Xiangqingcai (XQC) and Xiuhuajin (XHJ) have unique aroma characteristics, but the chemical profiles of these aromas are unknown. Here, the aroma profiles of three varieties of pak choi including XQC, XHJ, and Suzhouqing (CK, non-aromatic) were determined using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and relative odor activity values (rOAV). A total of 15 categories of 716 volatile metabolites were detected in the three pak choi varieties, with terpenoid metabolites identified as the major components, although in each sample the identity of the major terpenoid metabolite varied. There were 53 aroma components in XQC and 54 aroma components in XHJ with rOAV >1, which contribute to rice aroma and fishy odor of these varieties, respectively.

BackgroundThe rising prevalence of multimorbidity and functional dependence in community-dwelling older adults contribute to the demand for home care services. Evidence on how chronic conditions, especially multimorbidity, affect dependence levels among older adults with functional dependence in a socio-cultural context is much needed to inform policy, workforce, aged care service development to meet the care needs of this population.ObjectivesThis study aimed to determine the association between chronic conditions, multimorbidity and dependence levels among Chinese community-dwelling older adults with functional dependence.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted with 1,235 community-dwelling older adults with functional dependence in Hunan province, China, from June to October 2018. Data on socio-demographic factors, cognitive function, vision and hearing conditions, activities of daily living (ADLs), and health conditions were collected, and binary logistic regression analyses were used to determine the association between chronic conditions, multimorbidity and dependence levels, with adjustments for relevant covariates.ResultsAmong the participants, 62.9% had multimorbidity. Parkinson’s disease, stroke, COPD, hypertension, mood and psychotic disorders (Anx/Sch/Dep) were significantly associated with high levels of functional dependence. After adjusting for demographic variables, cognitive function, vision, and hearing conditions, we observed a significant relationship between multimorbidity and higher functional dependence, but this association became insignificant when including certain chronic diseases closely associated with high-level dependence. Study revealed that Parkinson’s disease and stroke notably increase dependency risk across seven ADL domains, demonstrating their extensive impact on daily functioning.ConclusionThe prevalence of multimorbidity among Chinese community-dwelling older adults with functional dependence is very high. The association of multimorbidity with functional dependence is mediated by specific chronic conditions. These findings highlight the necessity of adopting an integrated care model that combines medical and social care, with a particular emphasis on managing multimorbidity and critical chronic conditions that lead to severe functional dependence to preventing and diminish the onset of disabilities.

Abstract Harmonic generation and utilization are significant topics in nonlinear science. Although the progress in the microwave region has been expedited by the development of time‐modulated metasurfaces, one major issue of these devices is the strong entanglement of multiple harmonics, leading to criticism of their use in frequency‐division multiplexing (FDM) applications. Previous studies have attempted to overcome this limitation, but they suffer from designing complexity or insufficient controlling capability. Here a new space‐time‐coding metasurface (STCM) is proposed to independently and precisely synthesize not only the phases but also the amplitudes of various harmonics. This promising feature is successfully demonstrated in wireless space‐ and frequency‐division multiplexing experiments, where modulated and unmodulated signals are simultaneously transmitted via different harmonics using a shared STCM. To illustrate the advantages, binary frequency shift keying (BFSK) and quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation schemes are respectively implemented. Behind the intriguing functionality, the mechanism of the space‐time coding strategy and the analytical designing method are elaborated, which are validated numerically and experimentally. It is believed that the achievements can potentially propel the time‐vary metasurfaces in the next‐generation wireless applications.

Objective To compare the 24-hour intraocular pressure (IOP) fluctuation slope curve between newly diagnosed patients with ocular hypertension (OHT) and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).Methods and analysis Newly diagnosed and untreated OHT and POAG patients who underwent 24-hour IOP monitoring were consecutively enrolled in the study. IOP measurements were taken every 2 hours from 8:00 to 6:00 hours the following day using an iCare PRO tonometer. Patients maintained their daily routines, with IOP measured in a seated position during the day and supine at night. The 24-hour IOP fluctuation indices, including peak, trough and overall fluctuation, were calculated. Differences in the 24-hour IOP fluctuation slope curves over time between groups were analysed using a generalised additive mixed model.Results 46 patients with OHT and 41 with POAG were included. BackgroundOASL (Oligoadenylate Synthetase-Like), an interferon-induced protein in the OAS family, plays a significant role in anti-viral response. Studies have demonstrated its association with prognosis of certain tumors. However, the mechanism through which OASL affects tumors is unclear. A systemic pan-cancer study of OASL needs to be illustrated.MethodsAnalysis of OASL expression across 33 tumors was conducted utilizing TCGA, GTEx and CPTAC databases. COX and Log-Rank regressions were employed to calculate the prognosis. We validated the impact of OASL on apoptosis, migration, and invasion in pancreatic cancer cell lines. Moreover, we employed seven algorithms in bulk data to investigate the association of OASL expression and immune cell infiltration within tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) and ultimately validated at single-cell transcriptome level.ResultsWe discovered elevated expression of OASL and its genetic heterogeneity in certain tumors, which link closely to prognosis. Validation experiments were conducted in PAAD and confirmed these findings. Additionally, OASL regulates immune checkpoint ligand such as programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1), through IFN-γ/STAT1 and IL-6/JAK/STAT3 pathways in tumor cells. Meanwhile, OASL affects macrophages infiltration in TIME. By these mechanisms OASL could cause dysfunction of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) in tumors.DiscussionMulti-omics analysis reveals OASL as a prognostic and immunological biomarker in pan-cancer.

During outdoor work in April 2022, a 48-year-old man was stabbed by a tree branch and underwent intraocular foreign body extraction and repair of the scleral wound with sutures and amniotic membrane graft at a local hospital. Steroid therapy with prednisone was prescribed after a diagnosis of uveitis. Vitrectomy was performed in June 2023; a fungal culture was positive, and ITS sequencing identified the organism as Paradictyoarthrinium diffractum. Empiric antifungal therapy did not have an effect, and, because of deterioration of the condition, the left eye was enucleated in October 2023. P. diffractum is a mangrove host-specific saprophytic fungus that has not been reported in humans.

Abstract As the world's first oral nuclear export inhibitor, selinexor is increasingly being used in clinical applications for malignant tumors. However, there is no extensive exploration on selinexor's adverse events (ADEs), necessitating a real-word assessment of its clinical medication safety. FAERS data (July 2019–June 2023) were searched for selinexor ADE reports across all indications. Use the system organ class (SOC) and preferred terms (PT) from the medical dictionary for regulatory activities (MedDRA) to describe, categorize, and statistic ADEs. Disproportionality analysis was employed through calculation of reporting odds ratio (ROR) and proportional reporting ratio (PRR). Based on total of 4392 selinexor related ADE reports as the primary suspect (PS), of which 2595 instances were severe outcomes. The predominant ADEs included gastrointestinal disorders, myelosuppression symptoms, and various nonspecific manifestations. 124 signals associated with selinexor ADE were detected, and 10 of these top 15 signals were not included into the instructions. Our study provides real-world evidence regarding the drug safety of selinexor, which is crucial for clinicians to safeguard patients’ health.

Abstract Variations in chromosome number are occasionally observed among oomycetes, a group that includes many plant pathogens, but the emergence of such variations and their effects on genome and virulence evolution remain ambiguous. We generated complete telomere-to-telomere genome assemblies for Phytophthora sojae, Globisporangium ultimum, Pythium oligandrum, and G. spinosum. Reconstructing the karyotype of the most recent common ancestor in Peronosporales revealed that frequent chromosome fusion and fission drove changes in chromosome number. Centromeres enriched with Copia-like transposons may contribute to chromosome fusion and fission events. Chromosome fusion facilitated the emergence of pathogenicity genes and their adaptive evolution. Effectors tended to duplicate in the sub-telomere regions of fused chromosomes, which exhibited evolutionary features distinct to the non-fused chromosomes. By integrating ancestral genomic dynamics and structural predictions, we have identified secreted Ankyrin repeat-containing proteins (ANKs) as a novel class of effectors in P. sojae. Phylogenetic analysis and experiments further revealed that ANK is a specifically expanded effector family in oomycetes. These results revealed chromosome dynamics in oomycete plant pathogens, and provided novel insights into karyotype and effector evolution.

Abstract Background Discrepancies in the utilization of reactive oxygen species (ROS) between cancer cells and their normal counterparts constitute a pivotal juncture for the precise treatment of cancer, delineating a noteworthy trajectory in the field of targeted therapies. This phenomenon is particularly conspicuous in the domain of nano-drug precision treatment. Despite substantial strides in employing nanoparticles to disrupt ROS for cancer therapy, current strategies continue to grapple with challenges pertaining to efficacy and specificity. One of the primary hurdles lies in the elevated levels of intracellular glutathione (GSH). Presently, predominant methods to mitigate intracellular GSH involve inhibiting its synthesis or promoting GSH efflux. However, a conspicuous gap remains in the absence of a strategy capable of directly and efficiently clearing GSH. Methods We initially elucidated the chemical mechanism underpinning oridonin, a diminutive pharmacological agent demonstrated to perturb reactive oxygen species, through its covalent interaction with glutathione. Subsequently, we employed the incorporation of maleimide-liposomes, renowned for their capacity to disrupt the ROS delivery system, to ameliorate the drug’s water solubility and pharmacokinetics, thereby enhancing its ROS-disruptive efficacy. In a pursuit to further refine the targeting for acute myeloid leukemia (AML), we harnessed the maleic imide and thiol reaction mechanism, facilitating the coupling of Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) peptides to the liposomes’ surface via maleic imide. This strategic approach offers a novel method for the precise removal of GSH, and its enhancement endeavors are directed towards fortifying the precision and efficacy of the drug’s impact on AML targets. Results We demonstrated that this peptide-liposome-small molecule machinery targets AML and consequently induces cell apoptosis both in vitro and in vivo through three disparate mechanisms: (I) Oridonin, as a Michael acceptor molecule, inhibits GSH function through covalent bonding, triggering an initial imbalance of oxidative stress. (II) Maleimide further induces GSH exhaustion, aggravating redox imbalance as a complementary augment with oridonin. (III) Peptide targets TLR2, enhances the directivity and enrichment of oridonin within AML cells. Conclusion The rationally designed nanocomplex provides a ROS drug enhancement and targeted delivery platform, representing a potential solution by disrupting redox balance for AML therapy.

Abstract Background Nitrogen (N) is essential for plant growth and development. In Lithocarpus polystachyus Rehd., a species known for its medicinal and food value, phlorizin is the major bioactive compound with pharmacological activity. Research has revealed a positive correlation between plant nitrogen (N) content and phlorizin synthesis in this species. However, no study has analyzed the effect of N fertilization on phlorizin content and elucidated the molecular mechanisms underlying phlorizin synthesis in L. polystachyus. Results A comparison of the L. polystachyus plants grown without (0 mg/plant) and with N fertilization (25, 75, 125, 175, 225, and 275 mg/plant) revealed that 75 mg N/plant fertilization resulted in the greatest seedling height, ground diameter, crown width, and total phlorizin content. Subsequent analysis of the leaves using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) detected 150 metabolites, including 42 flavonoids, that were differentially accumulated between the plants grown without and with 75 mg/plant N fertilization. Transcriptomic analysis of the L. polystachyus plants via RNA sequencing revealed 162 genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis, among which 53 significantly differed between the N-treated and untreated plants. Fertilization (75 mg N/plant) specifically upregulated the expression of the genes phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), 4-coumarate-CoA ligase (4CL), and phlorizin synthase (PGT1) but downregulated the expression of trans-cinnamate 4-monooxygenase (C4H), shikimate O-hydroxycinnamoyltransferase (HCT), and chalcone isomerase (CHI), which are related to phlorizin synthesis. Finally, an integrated analysis of the transcriptome and metabolome revealed that the increase in phlorizin after N fertilization was consistent with the upregulation of phlorizin biosynthetic genes. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT‒PCR) was used to validate the RNA sequencing data. Thus, our results indicated that N fertilization increased phlorizin metabolism in L. polystachyus by regulating the expression levels of the PAL, PGT1, 5-O-(4-coumaroyl)-D-quinate 3’-monooxygenase (C3’H), C4H, and HCT genes. Conclusions Our results demonstrated that the addition of 75 mg/plant N to L. polystachyus significantly promoted the accumulation of flavonoids, including phlorizin, and the expression of flavonoid synthesis-related genes. Under these conditions, the genes PAL, 4CL, and PGT1 were positively correlated with phlorizin accumulation, while C4H, CHI, and HCT were negatively correlated with phlorizin accumulation. Therefore, we speculate that PAL, 4CL, and PGT1 participate in the phlorizin pathway under an optimal N environment, regulating phlorizin biosynthesis. These findings provide a basis for improving plant bioactive constituents and serve as a reference for further pharmacological studies.

Abstract Background Small extracellular vesicles (sEV) are closely associated with the development and metastasis of many types of mammalian cancer. Glycoconjugates are highly expressed on sEV and play important roles in sEV biogenesis and their interaction with other cells. However, the study on vesicular glycoconjugates are far behind proteins and nucleic acids. Especially, the functions of sialic acids which are the terminal components of glycoconjugates, are poorly understood in sEV. Methods Sialic acid levels on sEV from plasma and bladder cancer cells were determined by ELISA and lectin blotting. Effects of sialylation on sEV uptake were determined by flow cytometry. Vesicular glycoproteins bearing sialic acids responsible for sEV uptake was identified by proteomics and density gradient centrifugation, and their site-specific sialylation functions were assayed by N-glycosylation site mutation. Effects of integrin β1 bearing sialic acids on the pro-metastatic function of sEV in vivo were explored using Balb/c nu/nu mice. Results (1) Increased sialic acid levels were observed in sEV from malignant bladder cancer cells. (2) Elimination of sialic acids on sEV impaired sEV uptake by recipient cells. (3) Vesicular integrin β1 bearing sialic acids was identified to play a key role in sEV uptake. (4) Desialylation of the hybrid domain of vesicular integrin β1 inhibited its binding to matrix fibronectin, and reduced sEV entry into recipient cells. (5) Sialylation on integrin β1 affected pro-metastatic function of sEV in Balb/c nu/nu mice. Conclusions Taken together, our findings indicate important functional roles of sialic acids in sEV uptake and reprogramming plasticity of surrounding normal epithelial cells. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Background Depression is a global health priority. Maintaining and delaying depressive symptoms in older adults is a key to healthy aging. This study aimed to identify depressive symptom trajectories, predictors and mortality, while also exploring the relationship between air quality and depressive symptoms in older adults in the Hong Kong community over 14 years. Methods This study is a longitudinal study in Hong Kong. The target population was community-dwelling older adults over age 65. Depressive symptoms were measured by the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15). Group-based trajectory model was used to identify heterogeneity in longitudinal changes over 14 years and examine the associations between baseline variables and trajectories for different cohort members using multinomial logistic regression. The Kaplan–Meier method was employed to conduct survival analysis and explore the variations in survival probabilities over time among different trajectory group. Linear mixed model was used to explore the relationship between air quality and depressive symptoms. Results A total of 2828 older adults were included. Three different trajectories of depressive symptoms in older people were identified: relatively stable (15.4%), late increase (67.1%) and increase (17.5%). Female, more number of chronic diseases, poor cognitive function, and poor health-related quality of life (HRQOL) were significantly associated with other less favorable trajectories compared with participants with stable levels of depressive symptoms. The late increase group had a lower mortality rate than the relatively stable and increased groups. Lower baseline ambient air pollutant exposure to NO2 over 14 years was significantly associated with fewer depressive symptoms. Conclusions In this study, we found that a late increase in depressive symptoms was the predominant trend in older Chinese people in Hong Kong. Poorer HRQOL was predictive of less favorable trajectories of depressive symptoms. Ambient air pollution was associated with depressive symptoms. This novel observation strengthens the epidemiological evidence of longitudinal changes in depressive symptoms and associations with late-life exposure to air pollution.

Abstract Sarcodon and Hydnellum are two ectomycorrhizal genera of important ecological and economic value in Southwest China, and they are common in the free markets in this region. It was estimated that more than 1,500 tonnes of them were sold as edible per year, but there was little information about the taxonomic placements of these edible mushrooms sold in the markets. Traditional concepts of the two genera have also been challenged recently, and circumscription of Sarcodon and the informally defined clade “Neosarcodon” remained unresolved. In the present study, specimens collected in the field and purchased from the markets in Southwest China were analyzed based on morphological characters and DNA sequences. Phylogeny of the traditional Sarcodon s. lat. and Hydnellum s. lat. was reconstructed from the combined internal transcribed spacer (ITS), nuclear large ribosomal subunit (nLSU) and RNA polymerase II second largest subunit (RPB2) dataset based on expanded samples to reevaluate the taxonomic placements of the two genera. In the present molecular analyses, four distinct clades were recovered and strongly supported: Hydnellum, Neosarcodon, Phellodon and Sarcodon. Neosarcodon is formally introduced as a generic name to include nine species previously placed in Sarcodon, and the delimitation of Sarcodon is revised based on phylogenetic and morphological studies. Phylogenetic analyses also revealed an unexpected species diversity (17 phylogenetic species) of Sarcodon and Hydnellum in the markets; nine phylogenetic species of Sarcodon and eight of Hydnellum were uncovered from the samples collected in the markets. Eight species were resolved in the traditional S. imbricatus complex, with S. imbricatus s.str. being the most common edible stipitate hydnoid fungal species. Three of the edible Hydnellum species (H. edulium, H. subalpinum, and H. subscabrosellum), and five separated from the S. imbricatus complex (Sarcodon flavidus, S. giganteus, S. neosquamosus, S. nigrosquamosus, and S. pseudoimbricatus), are described as new. Three new Chinese records (H. illudens, H. martioflavum, and H. versipelle), and the notable S. imbricatus and S. leucopus are also reported.

Abstract Learning graph structure from observed signals over graph is a crucial task in many graph signal processing (GSP) applications. Existing approaches focus on inferring static graph, typically assuming that all nodes are available. However, these approaches ignore the situation where only a subset of nodes are available from spatiotemporal measurements, and the remaining nodes are never observed due to application-specific constraints, resulting in time-varying graph estimation accuracy declines dramatically. To handle this problem, we propose a framework that consider the presence of hidden nodes to identify time-varying graph. Specifically, we assume that the graph signals are smooth and stationary on the graphs and only a small number of edges are allowed to change between two consecutive graphs. With these assumptions, we present a challenging time-varying graph inference problem, which models the influence of hidden nodes in terms of estimating the graph-shift operator matrices that have a form of graph Laplacian. Moreover, we emphasize similar edge pattern (column-sparsity) between different graphs. Finally, our method is evaluated on both synthetic and real-world data. The experimental results demonstrate the advantage of our method when compared to existing benchmarking methods.

Coastal management in China is confronted with an urgent choice between natural restoration and maintenance of existing seawalls and reclaimed land for economic development. A key criterion for making this decision is the resilience to coastal flooding, which depends on the ability to predict tidal level. Tidal duration asymmetry (TDA) is a key parameter in determination of the arrival and duration of flood tides. This study selected the western inner shelf of the Yellow Sea (WYS) as the study area and investigated the responses of TDA to different shoreline configurations and relative sea level rise. The responses of TDA to shoreline reconstruction yielded spatial variability locally and remotely. In the nearshore area, the responses of TDA to the complex ocean environment mainly originated from the combined functions of reflection, bottom friction, and advection, which controlled the energy transfer from M2 or S2 constituents to their overtides or compound tides. The sensitivity of TDA to coastline typologies was not limited to coastal waters but could stretch over the entire inner shelf. The vulnerability of tidal responses was due to the displacement of the M2 amphidrome of the Kelvin wave on the WYS, which in turn changed tidal energy fluxes over the regime. The relative sea level rise could intensify the feedback of TDA to seawalls and land reclamation.

Background In recent years, the research on symptom management in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients has shifted from a single symptom to symptom clusters and network analysis. This study collected and evaluated unpleasant symptoms in PD patients and explored groups of symptoms that may affect PD patients with a view to higher symptom management.Methods The symptoms of PD patients were measured using the modified Dialysis Symptom Index. The symptom network and node characteristics were assessed by network analysis, and symptom clusters were explored by factor analysis.Results In this study of 602 PD patients (mean age 47.8 ± 16.8 years, 47.34% male), most had less than 2 years of dialysis experience. Five symptom clusters were obtained from factor analysis, which were body symptom cluster, gastrointestinal symptom cluster, mood symptom cluster, sexual disorder symptom cluster, and skin-sleep symptom cluster. Itching and decreased interest in sex may be sentinel symptoms, and being tired or lack of energy and feeling anxious are core symptoms in PD patients.Conclusions This study emphasizes the importance of recognizing symptom clusters in PD patients for better symptom management. Five clusters were identified, with key symptoms including itching, decreased interest in sex, fatigue, and anxiety. Early intervention focused on these symptom clusters in PD patients holds promise for alleviating the burden of symptoms.

Compared to the traditional alloys, high entropy alloys exhibit exceptional strength and outstanding ductility, making them highly attractive for use in demanding engineering applications. However, the atomic-scale deformation behavior of HEAs with precipitate under the low-cycle loading conditions has not been well studied. Here, we utilize molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the low cycle fatigue behavior of AlCoCrFeNi HEAs with AlNi-rich phase, in order to better understand the cyclic deformation, work hardening, and damage mechanisms. In the stress-strain hysteresis loops, the stress in the elastic stage exhibits a gradual linear increase, followed by fluctuations at yielding and plastic deformation. The strain hardening depends on the cycle number after the yielding stage. With an increase in the number of cycles, the activation mode of stacking faults gradually transitions from a multi-slip system to a single-slip system, attributed to the gradual phase transformation. A thorough examination of dislocation evolution is crucial in understanding the strengthening and plastic behavior of materials under cyclic loading. The generation of more stair-rod dislocations further suppresses the movement of dislocations. The combined effects of element diffusion, structural transformation, and incoherent precipitation play a critical role in enhancing the mechanical properties of AlCoCrFeNi HEAs. The strength of high entropy alloys is improved through interface strengthening caused by element diffusion and structural transformation, along with dispersion induced by incoherent precipitation. This work provides a detailed atomic-level understanding of the cyclic deformation-induced strengthening mechanism, in order to design high-strength and ductile HEAs with specific desired properties.

We herein describe a rare case of adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia with an 18florine-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) skeletal superscan-like appearance. The degree of bone marrow uptake was so intense that it far exceeded the level of physiological cerebral uptake and radiourinary activity. The distribution was remarkably similar to a superscan seen on skeletal scintigraphy. Skeletal superscans of 18F-FDG PET/CT have been reported in hematological diseases, solid tumors with extensive bone metastasis, and metabolic diseases. Thus, we reviewed the PET/CT images of cases reported, indicating that more homogeneous distribution, without primary tumor and specific mandibular and skull activity, may be suggestive of hematological diseases.

Objective To investigate the characteristics of beta parapapillary atrophy (β-PPA) in patients with primary angle-closure suspect (PACS).Methods and analysis In total, 215 and 259 eyes with PACS and non-PACS (NPACS), respectively, were enrolled in this observational, cross-sectional study. Stereoscopic fundus and optical coherence tomography images were used to characterise β-PPA; the former was also used to measure the major β-PPA parameters. Univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to identify the factors correlated with the presence of β-PPA and with β-PPA parameters.Results The β-PPA occurrence rates were 48.80% and 44.40% in the PACS and NPACS groups, respectively, with no significant difference between groups. Compared with that in the NPACS group, the β-PPA area was significantly larger (p=0.005) in the PACS group, but the angular extent and maximum radial length did not differ between groups (p=0.110 and 0.657, respectively) after adjusting for age and axial length. Pakchoi (Brassica rapa ssp. chinensis) is cultivated for its high nutritional value; however, the nutritional diversity of different pakchoi cultivars is rarely investigated. Herein, we performed widely targeted metabolic profiling analyses of five popular pakchois. A total of 670 metabolites were detected, which could be divided into 13 categories. The accumulation patterns of main nutritional metabolites among the five pakchois were significantly different and complementary. Moreover, the pakchoi cultivar ‘QYC’ showed quite different metabolomic profiles compared with other pakchois. The Venn diagram showed that the 75 differential metabolites were shared among the comparison groups (‘QYC’ vs. ‘MET’/ ‘NBC’/ ‘PPQ’/ ‘XQC’), of which 52 metabolites were upregulated in ‘QYC’. The phenolic acids had the largest variations between ‘QYC’ and the other pakchoi cultivars. These findings expand metabolomic information on different pakchoi cultivars and further provide new insights into the selection and breeding of excellent pakchoi cultivars.

In recent years, aerosols have been recognized as a prominent medium for the transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes. Among these, particles with a particle size of 2 μm (PM2.5) can directly penetrate the alveoli. However, the presence of antibiotic-resistant genes in aerosols from pet hospitals and the potential risks posed by antibiotic-resistant bacteria in these aerosols to humans and animals need to be investigated. In this study, cefotaxime-resistant bacteria were collected from 5 representative pet hospitals in Changchun using a Six-Stage Andersen Cascade Impactor. The distribution of bacteria in each stage was analyzed, and bacteria from stage 5 and 6 were isolated and identified. Minimal inhibitory concentrations of isolates against 12 antimicrobials were determined using broth microdilution method. Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction was employed to detect resistance genes and mobile genetic elements that could facilitate resistance spread. The results indicated that ARBs were enriched in stage 5 (1.1–2.1 μm) and stage 3 (3.3–4.7 μm) of the sampler. A total of 159 isolates were collected from stage 5 and 6. Among these isolates, the genera Enterococcus spp. (51%), Staphylococcus spp. (19%), and Bacillus spp. (14%) were the most prevalent. The isolates exhibited the highest resistance to tetracycline and the lowest resistance to cefquinome. Furthermore, 56 (73%) isolates were multidrug-resistant. Quantitative PCR revealed the expression of 165 genes in these isolates, with mobile genetic elements showing the highest expression levels. In conclusion, PM2.5 from pet hospitals harbor a significant number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and carry mobile genetic elements, posing a potential risk for alveolar infections and the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes.

Previously proposed array antennas with low side-lobe level (SLL) based on amplitudephase metasurface inevitably result in high cross-polarization level (CPL) due to amplitude modulation is achieved by transforming some primary energy to the cross-polarization. This paper proposes a dualband circularly-polarized (CP) transmitarray antenna (TA) with simultaneous low SLL and CPL. The proposed antenna is based on a metasurface with independent amplitude and phase control at dual-band. The element of metasurface consists of dual-band receiver-transmitter (Rx-Tx) structures constructing CP receiving patches and transmitting patches. The amplitude and phase modulations at each band can be achieved dependently by adjusting the impedance-matching characteristics and the rotation angles of the Tx patches, respectively. By applying amplitude-phase modulation at dual-band, the antenna can achieve high directivity, low SLL and CPL simultaneously. Experimental results are in good accordance with the simulation ones, demonstrating that the designed low-side-lobe antenna realizes gains of 24.2 dBic and 25.2 dBic, CPLs of -32.2 dB and -26.6 dB, SLLs of -23.2 dB and -24 dB at 12 GHz and 15 GHz, respectively. The proposed TA shows good SLL and CPL performances at dual-band for dual-CP, which presents great application potential in two-way satellite communication systems with limited volume and space.

Abstract Budorcas taxicolor bedfordi is a rare animal uniquely distributed in the Qinling Mountains (China). Human disturbance and habitat fragmentation have directly affected the survival of B. t. bedfordi. It is urgent to clarify the genetic diversity and genetic structure of the B. t. bedfordi population and implement effective conservation measures. In this study, 20 new polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated by Illumina sequencing. The genetic diversity and population structure of 124 B. t. bedfordi individuals from three populations (Niubeliang population, Zhouzhi population, and Foping population) were analysed according to these 20 microsatellite loci. Our results indicated that B. t. bedfordi had a low level of genetic variability and that there was inbreeding in the three populations. The population genetic structure analyses showed that the Niubeliang population had a trend of differentiation from other populations. National roads can affect population dispersal, while ecological corridors can promote population gene exchange. None of the three B. t. bedfordi populations experienced bottleneck effects. For conservation management plans, the Zhouzhi population and Foping population should be considered one management unit, and the Niubeliang population should be considered another management unit. We suggest building an ecological corridor to keep the habitat connected and formulating tourism management measures to reduce the influence of human disturbance on B. t. bedfordi.

Abstract Background While the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in millions of cases worldwide, there is increasing recognition of a wide range of ocular manifestations associated with the virus, including uveitis. Uveitis is an inflammatory condition of the uveal tract of the eye that can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated promptly. Here we report a retrospective observational study of patients who presented with new onset or recurrent uveitis following COVID-19 infection. Methods This is a retrospective observational study conducted at the Beijing Tongren Hospital. We identified patients who presented with symptoms of non-infectious active uveitis with positive real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of COVID-19 within 4 weeks. All patients received ophthalmic examinations, including anterior and posterior segment imaging, to assess the extent of ocular involvement. Results The 18 patients with a total of 33 eyes included in this study presented with symptoms of active uveitis within 4 weeks of their positive COVID-19 RT-PCR test. Among them, 9 patients presented with the development of uveitis following COVID-19 infection, and 9 patients had relapsed uveitis after COVID-19 infection. Treatment with corticosteroids resulted in improvement of symptoms and resolution of inflammation in all cases. In this study, all patients did not experience any adverse drug reactions during treatment. Conclusion Our observational study highlights the potential for new onset or recurrence of uveitis following COVID-19 infection. Abstract Background In this study, we report a case series of acute macular neuroretinopathy (AMN) associated with COVID-19 infection. Methods This retrospective observational study was conducted at Beijing Tongren Hospital. We reviewed patients who were diagnosed with AMN within one month of testing positive for COVID-19 using real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results A total of 11 AMN patients (20 eyes) were included in the study. The mean age was 33.8 ± 12.6 years. The average interval between a positive COVID-19 PCR test and the onset of ocular symptoms was 2.8 ± 2.5 days. The mean follow-up period for the patients was 12.5 ± 3.8 weeks. Imaging characteristics of AMN patients following COVID-19 infection included areas of low reflectivity on near-infrared reflectance (NIR) imaging, hyperreflective lesions at the level of the outer plexiform layer (OPL) and outer nuclear layer (ONL) and disruption of the ellipsoid zone (EZ) on spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) B-scans. Visual field examinations revealed parafoveal scotomas that closely corresponded to the clinical lesions. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) demonstrated impaired perfusion in the deep retinal vascular plexus. Fluorescein angiography (FA), indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), and spontaneous fundus autofluorescence showed no significant abnormalities. During follow-up, partial improvement in retinal lesions was observed in NIR imaging and SD-OCT in some patients, but a proportion of patients still exhibited persistent retinal damage and no improvement in visual field scotomas. Conclusion COVID-19-related AMN share similar clinical and imaging features with AMN due to other causes, as evidenced by the persistent presence of visual field scotomas over a longer duration. The use of computer vision to estimate the Body Condition Score for cow has demonstrated to be feasible. However, most research has been limited to fixed camera positions, which restricts the technique’s usefulness. This research acquired cow data at various distances and angles to investigate the impact of distance and different depth images restoration method on scoring accuracy. A U-Net neural network-based model was employed for background segmentation. The model proposed in this study performs best among SegNet, UNet, UNet++ and DeeplabV3, with significant performance improvement and superior overall segmentation accuracy, and has stronger foreground object identification capability. Additionally, we utilize the concept of human feature point localization to pinpoint the positions of cow feature points. The results show that compared to Hourglass, CPN, and Hrnet, the model in this study has significant advantages in three core indicators: accuracy, recall, and mAP. Moreover, we presented an unsupervised depth image reconstruction model based on the Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Model and Unet++ Mode, facilitating the measurement and scoring of cow characteristics. Finally, the measurement results of cow body size using the Lerp model, autoregressive model, GAN model, and the depth image completion model proposed in this study were compared. The method proposed in this study was found to be effective and feasible for meeting actual production requirements at a camera distance of 1–2 m from the cow, achieving high accuracy with a coefficient of determination above 0.9. Additionally, the three models used were effective in handling small-scale depth deficits, with a high degree of agreement between machine and manual measurements. The DDPM-based depth image reconstruction model was found to produce the most accurate results when the camera distance from the cow was between 1-3m. Therefore, this research makes it possible to make flexible measurements in the near range using existing methods. Accurate measurements at longer ranges are influenced by depth image quality and feature point localization accuracy, which require more advanced techniques for further investigation.

To achieve the color matching rules for the textiles discovered during Silk Road excavations between the 4th and 8th centuries, this research proposed an image-based matching network modeling method. The Silk Road facilitated trade and cultural exchange between the East and West, and the textiles found along the way depict the development of fabrics in a color scheme with great cultural significance. A total of 165 images with brocade patterns were collected from a book with a detailed description of the Western influences on textiles along the Silk Road. Two different clustering methods, including the K-means clustering method and octree quantization approach, were used to extract the primary and secondary colors. By combining the HSV color space with the PCCS color system, the color distribution was analyzed to discover the features of representative color patterns. The co-occurrence relationship of the auxiliary colors was explored using the Apriori algorithm, and a total of eight association rules were established. The results showed that the K-means clustering algorithm can show a better effect of color classification to obtain three primary colors and nine secondary colors. The matching mechanism with a visualized network model was also proposed, which showed that reddish-yellow tones are the main colors in the brocade patterns, and the light and soft tones separately account for 27% and 20%. Beige and brown are the most common colorways, with a confidence level of 47%. One style of brocade pattern was used to demonstrate different appearances within various color networks, which could be applied to 3D virtual fitting. This image-based matching network modeling approach makes the color matching schemes visible, and can assist fashion design with fabric features influenced by historical and cultural development.

The risk of orbital infection might greatly rise if there is a delay in diagnosing woody foreign substances inside the eye socket. The majority of patients need surgical intervention as the recommended course of therapy. Nevertheless, it is essential to avoid disregarding undetected diagnoses and the existence of foreign material remnants after prior surgical procedures. Hence, achieving a precise diagnosis relies on a comprehensive assessment of the patient's trauma history, meticulous examination of the eyes, vigilant monitoring of clinical symptoms, accurate imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computerized tomography (CT), and prompt and thorough removal of wooden foreign objects within the eye socket.

BackgroundPhysical activity (PA) intervention is one of the most effective interventions to promote cognitive function of older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). However, the level of PA remains low. Based on the two core interventions (X-CircuiT and health education), this study aimed to examine the effect of three implementation strategies (viz., role modeling, goal-setting, and reminding) on the PA level among older adults with MCI using the multiphase optimization strategy (MOST).MethodsParticipants were randomized into one of eight conditions in a factorial design involving three factors with two levels: (i) role modeling (on vs. off); (ii) goal-setting (on vs. off); and (iii) reminding (on vs. off). The primary outcome was PA level at 12 weeks. The secondary outcomes were cognitive function, self-efficacy, and cost-effectiveness at 12 weeks. The intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis was performed as the main analysis and the per-protocol (PP) analysis as the sensitivity analysis.ResultsA total of 107 participants were included and randomly assigned into three groups, each receiving different implementation strategies. Hemorrhagic stroke, specifically intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), has been implicated in the development of persistent cognitive impairment, significantly compromising the quality of life for affected individuals. Nevertheless, the precise underlying mechanism remains elusive. Here, we report for the first time that the accumulation of iron within the hippocampus, distal to the site of ICH in the striatum, is causally linked to the observed cognitive impairment with both clinical patient data and animal model. Both susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) demonstrated significant iron accumulation in the hippocampus of ICH patients, which is far from the actual hematoma. Logistical regression analysis and multiple linear regression analysis identified iron level as an independent risk factor with a negative correlation with post-ICH cognitive impairment. Using a mouse model of ICH, we demonstrated that iron accumulation triggers an excessive activation of neural stem cells (NSCs). This overactivation subsequently leads to the depletion of the NSC pool, diminished neurogenesis, and the onset of progressive cognitive dysfunction. Mechanistically, iron accumulation elevated the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which downregulated the expression of Itga3. Notably, pharmacological chelation of iron accumulation or scavenger of aberrant ROS levels, as well as conditionally overexpressed Itga3 in NSCs, remarkably attenuated the exhaustion of NSC pool, abnormal neurogenesis and cognitive decline in the mouse model of ICH. Together, these results provide molecular insights into ICH-induced cognitive impairment, shedding light on the value of maintaining NSC pool in preventing cognitive dysfunction in patients with hemorrhagic stroke or related conditions.

Summary: New alien species are increasingly introduced and established outside their native range. The knowledge of the spatiotemporal dynamics of their accumulation and the factors determining their residence time in the introduced range is critical for proactive management, especially in emerging economies. Based on a comprehensive time series dataset of 721 alien angiosperms in China, we show that new alien flora has been accumulating steadily in China, particularly in the coastal regions, for the last 80 years without saturation. The ability to occupy a large number of habitats facilitates the early introduction of alien flora, whereas a large naturalized range, greater number of uses, and multiple introduction pathways directly contribute to their naturalization and invasion. The temporal pattern is predicted to remain consistent in the foreseeable future. We propose upgrading the country’s biosecurity infrastructure based on a standardized risk assessment framework to safeguard the country from ongoing and future invasions.

Objective Electronic mental health interventions are effective but not well promoted currently among older adults. This study sought to systematically review and summarize the barriers and facilitators of accepting and implementing electronic mental health interventions among older adults. Methods We comprehensively retrieved six electronic databases from January 2012 to September 2022: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, PsycINFO, and CINAHL. The JBI-QARI was used to assess the quality of the research methodology of each publication. Eligible studies underwent data coding and synthesis aligned to inductive and deductive methods. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research 2.0 was used as a deductive framework to guide a more structured analysis. Results The systematic review screened 4309 articles, 17 of which were included (eight with mixed methods and nine with qualitative methods). We identified and extracted the barriers and facilitators of accepting and implementing electronic mental health interventions among older adults: (1) innovation: technology challenges, optimized functions, and contents, security and privacy; (2) outer setting: community engagement and partnerships, financing; (3) inner setting: leadership engagement, available resources, incompatibility, intergenerational support, training and guidance; (4) individuals: perceptions, capability, motivation of older adults and healthcare providers; and (5) implementation process: recruit, external assistance, and team. Conclusion These findings are critical to optimizing, promoting, and expanding electronic mental health interventions among older adults. The systematic review also provides a reference for better evidence-based implementation strategies in the future.

Abstract Background The Gibberellic Acid-Stimulated Arabidopsis (GASA) gene family is widely involved in the regulation of plant growth, development, and stress response. However, information on the GASA gene family has not been reported in Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis). Results Here, we conducted genome-wide identification and analysis of the GASA genes in Chinese cabbage. In total, 15 GASA genes were identified in the Chinese cabbage genome, and the physicochemical property, subcellular location, and tertiary structure of the corresponding GASA proteins were elucidated. Phylogenetic analysis, conserved motif, and gene structure showed that the GASA proteins were divided into three well-conserved subfamilies. Synteny analysis proposed that the expansion of the GASA genes was influenced mainly by whole-genome duplication (WGD) and transposed duplication (TRD) and that duplication gene pairs were under negative selection. Cis-acting elements of the GASA promoters were involved in plant development, hormonal and stress responses. Expression profile analysis showed that the GASA genes were widely expressed in different tissues of Chinese cabbage, but their expression patterns appeared to diverse. The qRT-PCR analysis of nine GASA genes confirmed that they responded to salt stress, heat stress, and hormonal triggers. Conclusions Overall, this study provides a theoretical basis for further exploring the important role of the GASA gene family in the functional genome of Chinese cabbage.

Meloidogyne graminicola has emerged as one of the most destructive plant-parasitic nematodes affecting rice (Oryza sativa) production worldwide. Resistance to M. graminicola in rice could be the most effective option for its management. However, sources of germplasm with resistance to M. graminicola in rice remain limited. Here, we describe the root attraction, gall formation and genetic analysis of the resistance to M. graminicola in the rice variety Huidao 5. A nematode attraction assay showed that second-stage juveniles (J2s) of M. graminicola were attracted at the root tip of Huaidao 5 within 8 h without a significant reduction in attraction compared to the susceptible rice variety Nanjing 9108. Microscopic observation of the infection revealed that the J2s invaded root tissues 12 h after inoculation, but their subsequent movement to the root tip was hindered in Huaidao 5, resulting in decreased nematode number compared to Nanjing 9108. Additionally, we used the soil and hydroponic culture systems to simulate upland and flooding conditions in the paddy fields respectively, and found that gall number was significantly reduced, and nematode development was clearly suppressed in Huaidao 5. To investigate the genetic basis of this resistance, cross breeding was performed between the Huaidao 5 and Nanjing 9108 varieties. There was no reduction in the resistance of the F1 offspring to M. graminicola in the greenhouse or field trials, suggesting that a dominant gene could control resistance in Huaidao 5. In summary, this study provides a detailed characterization of a novel source of resistance to M. graminicola in rice, which is of great potential for use in crop breeding.

Abstract Background Circular RNAs (circRNAs), as important non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), are involved in many biological activities. However, the exact chemical mechanism behind fat accumulation is unknown. In this paper, we obtained the expression profiles of circRNAs using high-throughput sequencing and investigated their differential expression in subcutaneous fat tissue of Duolang and Small Tail Han sheep. Results From the transcriptomic analysis, 141 differentially expressed circRNAs were identified, comprising 61 up-regulated circRNAs and 80 down-regulated circRNAs. These host genes were primarily enriched in the MAPK and AMPK signaling pathways which is closely associated with fat deposition regulation. We identified circRNA812, circRNA91, and circRNA388 as vital genes in fat deposition by miRNA-circRNA target gene prediction. The functional annotation results of target genes of key circRNAs showed that the signaling pathways mainly included PI3K-Akt and AMPK. We constructed the competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) regulatory network to study the role of circRNAs in sheep lipid deposition, and circRNA812, circRNA91, and circRNA388 can adsorb more miRNAs. NC_040253.1_5757, as the source of miRNA response element (MRE) among the three, may play an important role during the process of sheep fat deposition. Conclusions Our study gives a systematic examination of the circRNA profiles expressed in sheep subcutaneous fat. These results from this study provide some new basis for understanding circRNA function and sheep fat metabolism.
