This study examined longitudinal associations between parental psychological distress (stress and depression) when the child was 2 to 4 years and a child's emotional and behavioural problems at ages 3 to 4, and social functioning (loneliness and social competence) at age 11 in very preterm born children. The participants were Finnish families of 172 very preterm infants (gestational age < 32 weeks and/or birth weight ≤ 1500 g). In girls, higher levels of maternal depression were associated with higher levels of social and emotional loneliness. Furthermore, higher levels of maternal stress and children's externalizing problems were associated with lower levels of experienced empathy. In boys, higher levels of paternal depression were associated with lower levels of social loneliness and impulsive behaviour. In conclusion, early parental psychological distress is associated with early socioemotional development and the later experienced social functioning in former very preterm infants. Aim: To investigate how the aetiology of very preterm birth/very low birth weight is associated with mortality and later neurodevelopmental outcomes. Methods: Very preterm/very low‐birth weight singletons were categorised based on the aetiology of preterm birth: spontaneous preterm birth (n = 47, 28.1%), preterm premature rupture of membranes (n = 56, 33.5%) or placental vascular pathology (n = 64, 38.3%). Mortality, cerebral palsy, severe cognitive impairment by 11 years of age (<2SD) and mean full‐scale intelligence quotient at 11 years were studied in association with birth aetiology. Results: There was no difference in mortality or rate of cerebral palsy according to birth aetiologies. The rate of severe cognitive impairment was lower (4.9% vs. 15.3%) in the preterm premature rupture of the membrane group in comparison to the placental vascular pathology group (OR 0.2, 95% CI 0.03–0.9, adjusted for gestational age). At 11 years, there was no statistically significant difference in the mean full‐scale intelligence quotient. Conclusion: Placental vascular pathology, as the aetiology of very preterm birth/very low birth weight, is associated with a higher rate of severe cognitive impairments in comparison to preterm premature rupture of membranes, although there was no difference in the mean full‐scale intelligence quotient at 11 years. Background: Diffusion tensor imaging is a widely used imaging method of brain white matter, but it is prone to imaging artifacts. The data corrections can affect the measured values. Objective: To explore the impact of susceptibility correction on diffusion metrics. Materials and methods: A cohort of 27 healthy adolescents (18 boys, 9 girls, mean age 12.7 years) underwent 3-T MRI, and we collected two diffusion data sets (anterior–posterior). The data were processed both with and without susceptibility artifact correction. We derived fractional anisotropy, mean diffusivity and histogram data of fiber length distribution from both the corrected and uncorrected data, which were collected from the corpus callosum, corticospinal tract and cingulum bilaterally. Results: Fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity values significantly differed when comparing the pathways in all measured tracts. The fractional anisotropy values were lower and the mean diffusivity values higher in the susceptibility-corrected data than in the uncorrected data. We found a significant difference in total tract length in the corpus callosum and the corticospinal tract. Conclusion: This study indicates that susceptibility correction has a significant effect on measured fractional anisotropy, and on mean diffusivity values and tract lengths. Aim: Prematurity has been shown to affect social competence in children and adults. Our aim was to evaluate profiles of self‐reported social behaviours and loneliness in preterm‐ and term‐born adolescents. Methods: Preterm (≤1500 g and, or, <32 gestational weeks)‐ and term‐born infants were recruited in Turku University Hospital from 2001 to 2006. The Multisource Assessment of Children's Social Competence Scale and the Peer Network and Dyadic Loneliness Scale were completed at the age of 11. Profiles of social competence and loneliness were labelled as low, average or high. Results: A total of 172 preterm‐born and 134 term‐born adolescents returned the questionnaires. Most frequently, preterm adolescents reported a profile of average social competence and average levels of loneliness. Preterm‐born boys reported a profile of low social functioning less often (preterm‐born 36% vs. term‐born 54%), and preterm‐born girls reported a profile of high social functioning less frequently (preterm‐born 26% vs. term‐born 37%) than same‐sex controls. Sex differences in social functioning profiles were smaller in preterm than term‐born adolescents. Conclusion: The majority of young adolescents born preterm reported a high or average social functioning profile irrespective of sex. Prematurity seems to level out differences between the sexes. Aim: Very preterm children born <32 weeks of gestation are at risk for motor difficulties such as cerebral palsy and developmental coordination disorder. This study explores the association between diffusion tensor imaging metrics at term and motor outcomes at 11 years of age.Methods: A cohort of 37 very preterm infants (mean gestational age 29 4/7, SD 2 0/7) born in 2004-2006 in Turku University Hospital underwent diffusion tensor imaging at term. A region of interest analysis of fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity was performed. Motor outcomes at 11 years of age were measured with the Movement Assessment Battery for Children - Second Edition.Results: The diffusion metrics of the corpus callosum (genu P = .005, splenium P = .049), the left corona radiata (P = .035) and the right optic radiation (P = .017) were related to later motor performance. Mean diffusivity decreased and fractional anisotropy increased in proportion to the improving performance.Conclusion: The diffusion metrics of the genu and splenium of the corpus callosum, the left corona radiata and the right optic radiation at term were associated with motor skills at 11 years of age. Aim: This Finnish regional birth-cohort study compared the school performance of very preterm and full-term children when they reached 11 years of age.Methods: Teachers rated the educational abilities of 123 preterm children and 133 full-term controls at the age of 11 years as well as the support services they received. The children were all born in the Turku University Hospital between 2001 and 2005. In the preterm group, neurosensory impairments were confirmed at two years of corrected age, and full-scale intelligence quotient (IQ) was assessed at 11 years of age using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition.Results: Educational abilities, including academic skills and classroom functioning, did not differ between the two groups after excluding the children with a full-scale IQ < 70. However, 40% of the preterm group and 26% of the controls had received at least one support service (p <0.02). The 13 preterm children with a full-scale IQ <70 and the 10 with neurosensory impairment received more support services. Boys in both groups displayed more classroom-functioning problems than girls.Conclusion: A full-scale IQ ≥ 70 and age-appropriate educational abilities do not exclude a significant need for support services in very preterm children at the age of 11 years. Aim: To study the prognostic value of volumetric brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at term equivalent age (TEA) and neurological examinations at TEA and at 2 years of corrected age for long-term neuromotor outcome in infants born very preterm.Method: A total of 98 infants born very preterm were included. Structural and volumetric brain MRI and the Dubowitz neurologic examination were done at TEA. The Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE) was performed at 2 years of corrected age. The Touwen examination was used for the assessment of minor neurological dysfunction (MND) at the age of 11 years.Results: Of all children (median birthweight 1083g [quartiles 820, 1300]; gestational age 28 5/7wks [26 4/7, 30 2/7]), 41 had simple MND, 11 had complex MND (cMND), and eight had cerebral palsy (CP). The negative and positive predictive value of structural brain MRI for cMND or CP was 88% and 50% respectively. Reduced volumes of total brain tissue, frontal lobes, basal ganglia and thalami, and cerebellum associated with cMND or CP. The results of the Dubowitz neurologic examination and the HINE correlated with the Touwen examination.Interpretation: Structural and volumetric MRI at TEA and structured neurological examinations predict long-term neuromotor outcome in infants born preterm. Objective: The purpose was to explore whether poor parental psychological well-being is associated with behavioral problems of very low birth weight (VLBW, ≤1500 g) infants at 3 years of age., Methods: In this prospective cohort study, 189 VLBW preterm infants born between January 2001 and December 2006 at the Turku University Hospital, Finland, were followed. Validated questionnaires (Beck Depression Inventory, Parenting Stress Index, and Sense of Coherence Scale) were mailed to the parents when their children were 2 years corrected age. A total of 140 parents evaluated the behavior of the child at 3 years by filling out the Child Behavior Checklist., Results: There were significant associations between most of the measures of parental symptoms of depression, parenting stress, and sense of coherence and the behavioral outcome of the VLBW infants. The concomitant symptoms of both parents were associated with more problematic child behavior., Conclusions: Parents report more behavioral and emotional problems in VLBW children at age 3 if they themselves have had symptoms of depression, parenting stress, or weak sense of coherence 1 year earlier. The new finding of this study was to show the significance of the father's psychological well-being on the behavioral development of a preterm child.
