The late Oligocene faunas from central France are often rich and provide crucial information for understanding the evolution of mammals during the Oligocene-Miocene transition. The locality of Coderet-Bransat, where Amphechinus arvernensis was so far the only known hedgehog, yielded new specimens hitherto identified as Galerix minor and Amphechinus pomeli. The new specimen of Amphechinus pomeli, together with a new study of the type specimens from Peublanc, confirm the previously questioned validity of this species, the smallest of all hedgehogs. The similarities between the faunal lists of Coderet-Bransat and Peublanc indicate a very close age (MP30), whereas some aquatic taxa only found in Peublanc suggest a slightly different palaeoenvironmental context compared to Coderet-Bransat.

New material recovered in the Oligocene locality St-Martin-de-Castillon (Vaucluse, France; MP24) provides a better knowledge of the characteristics of the species vauclusensis in its type-locality, hitherto assigned to the genus Myxomygale (Talpinae, tribe Urotrichini). In Europe, the species assigned to Myxomygale range from Late Eocene/Early Oligocene to the end of the Middle Miocene (MN 7/8). However noticeable differences can be observed in mandibles of these taxa, sometimes even coexisting in the same localities. We propose for the plesiomorphic branch (including M. vauclusensis and M. minor) a new genus, Percymygale, closely related to Myxomygale. Percymygale is consequently also assigned to the tribe Urotrichini. Today, the tribe Urotrichini (American and Japanese shrew-moles) is composed of terrestrial, semi-fossorial species, not well adapted to digging but able to climb small bushes, and foraging in grasslands, forests and covered landscapes. As a result, their limbs protrude laterally from the body (unlike in moles) and their humeri are usually longer with very limited adaptations to digging. Humeri are poorly known for Myxomygale and only fragmentary humeri are known for Percymygale n. gen. making comparisons difficult. However the muzzle development in Percymygale and Myxomygale suggests that Myxomygale was perhaps a better burrower than Percymygale.

National audience; Quelques sites nouvellement découverts et/ou exploités dans le paléokarst du Quercy font l'objet d'une brève présentation géomorphologique, d'un inventaire faunique et d'une évaluation biochronologique préliminaires. Ils ont fourni des restes de vertébrés amphibiens, reptiles, oiseaux et mammifères variés, dont certains sont l'objet d'études en cours (e.g. insectivores amphilémuridés, chiroptères, rongeurs). Ils représentent six localités d'âge éocène supérieur (St-Antonin-Noble-Val et Monteils en Aveyron ; Pépénut dans le Tarn ; Bouziès, Liauzu et Théron dans le Lot), et deux d'âge oligocène supérieur (Coânac-Château et Pélix tous deux dans le Lot). Au plan géomorphologique, quatre de ces sites (St-Antonin, Monteils, Bouziès, Liauzu) sont des conduits endokarstiques naturels. Les autres sites sont des poches exploitées et vidées (Coânac-Château) ou sondées par les mineurs phosphatiers et où subsistent des restes de remplissages (Pélix, Pépénut), ou bien encore d'anciens déblais d'exploitation (Théron). L'association des différents taxons et la présence d'espèces biochronologiquement significatives permettent de proposer des âges, plus ou moins précis, pour les faunes étudiées. A St-Antonin, le glyptosaurinae indique un âge antérieur à la Grande Coupure ; les rongeurs et chauves-souris semblent préciser le niveau-repère MP 17a. Hyaenodon requieni, présent à Bouziès, est caractéristique du niveau-repère MP 17a. La faune de Liauzu, quasi exclusivement composée de chiroptères, semble plus ancienne que celle de Sainte-Néboule et pourrait correspondre au niveau-repère MP 17b. A Pépénut, les quatre espèces de rongeurs et les trois de chauves-souris paraissent caractériser le niveau-repère MP 17b. Les spécimens de Palaeotherium sp., de taille moyenne, et d'Amphimeryx cf. murinus de Théron témoignent du niveau-repère MP 18 pour la faune de cette localité. La coexistence d'Amphimeryx cf. murinus et de certaines espèces de rongeurs et de chauves-souris situe le gisement de Monteils également au niveau-repère MP 18. Enfin, à l'Oligocène, les rongeurs indiquent respectivement pour Coânac-Château le niveau-repère MP 25 (à peine plus récent que Lebratières 14, contemporain de Mas-de-Gaston et plus ancien que le Garouillas et Rigal-Jouet), et pour Pélix, le niveau-repère MP 27-28.

Pleistocene palaeoenvironment in the archeological area of São Raimundo Nonato (Piaui, Brazil) : contribution of mammals and birds. New karstic localities situated in the archeological area of São Raimundo Nonato yielded a regionally so far unknown Quaternary mammal and bird fauna. This diversified fauna of about fifty taxa is homogenous throughout the sequences and is associated with palaeolithic industries very similar to those, 48 500 to 12 000 years BP old, found in a non fossiliferous site of the same area. Due to the presence of extinct large mammals, the age ascribed to the fauna is Upper Pleistocene. The numerous large-bodied herbivorous mammals implies abundant vegetational food sources. The prevalence of hypsodont herbivores, as opposed to a majority of forest birds suggests savannas and other types of open vegetation intermixed with forests. Some of the extant taxa pertaining to the community (particularly semi-aquatic Cricetid Rodents) are found out of their present distribution area. The faunal analysis suggests that during the sedimentary deposition more humid environmental conditions prevailed and that the habitat of northeastern Bresil has changed considerably as a result of climatic changes., Paléoenvironnement pléistocène dans l'Aire archéologique de São Raimundo Nona to (Piaui, Brésil) : apport des mammifères et des oiseaux. De nouveaux gisements karstiques situés dans l'Aire archéologique de São Raimundo Nonato ont livré une faune quaternaire inconnue jusqu'alors dans cette région. Cette faune, riche d'une cinquantaine de taxons, est variée et homogène ; elle a été recueillie en association stratigraphique avec une industrie paléolithique très semblable à celle, datée de 48 500 à 12 000 ans BP, découverte dans un gisement azoïque de la même aire. Parmi les grands mammifères, un certain nombre de taxons, aujourd'hui disparus, datent les gisements du Pléistocène supérieur. La proportion élevée de très grands herbivores témoigne d'une végétation abondante ; la prédominance des herbivores hypsodontes en opposition avec une faune d'oiseaux en majorité forestiers indique un paysage de savane à buissons entrecoupée de zones de forêts. Parmi les petits mammifères, les rongeurs semblent tous correspondre à des espèces actuelles mais plusieurs Cricétidés, adaptés à une vie semi-aquatique, ne sont plus représentés actuellement dans cette région. L'analyse de l'ensemble de la faune suggère un environnement différent de l'actuel et des conditions de climat beaucoup plus humides que de nos jours., Pleistocenico paleomedio ambiente en el area arqueológico de São Raimundo Nonato (Piaui, Brasil) : aportación de los mamíferos y de los aves. Nuevos yacimientos kársticos situados en el area arqueológica de São Raimundo Nonato han proporcionado una fauna cuaternaria hasta ahora desconocida en esta región. Dicha fauna, con la riqueza de una cincuentena de taxones, es variada y homogénea durante el relleno ; ha sido hallada en asociación estratigráfica con una industria paleolítica (48 500 a 12 000 años BP). Entre los grandes mamíferos, algunos taxones, desaparecidos en la actualidad, datan los yacimientos con una edad pleistocena superior. El número elevado de grandes herbivores induce a pensar en una vegetación abundante ; el predominio de herbívoros hypsodontes, en oposición a una fauna de aves en su mayoría forestales, indica un paisaje de sabana y arbustos, interrumpida con zonas de selva. Entre los pequeños mamiferos, los roedores parecen correspondar a especies actuales, pero numerosos Cricétidos, adaptados a una vida semi-acuática, no se encuentran más representados actualmente en esta región.
