Abstract Background Incarcerated individuals face high rates of mental illness, substance use disorders and communicable diseases including HIV, with increased health complications and mortality in the early post-release period. Multiple re-entry interventions linking justice-involved individuals to community resources via peer navigation have emerged, though limited data exist on the mechanics and personal impact of these approaches. This paper quantifies and evaluates a pilot study of a combined Community Health Worker (CHW)-re-entry intervention for individuals released from jail who use substances and have HIV to inform future large-scale applications. Methods A mixed-methods analysis of a CHW-re-entry intervention utilized in a pilot randomized controlled trial involving people with HIV who have a history of substance (stimulant, opioid or alcohol) use in Dallas, TX was conducted using an explanatory sequential design. Quantitative assessments of the intervention measured interaction types, time spent, and topics discussed and explored associations between the “dose” of intervention and patient outcomes. Qualitative analyses of CHW field notes and end-of-study participant interviews were triangulated with quantitative findings to elucidate the intervention’s impact. Results Of the 17/31 participants assigned to the intervention, 16 interacted with the CHW on at least one occasion, and 6 successfully completed a visit with the re-entry organization. Most CHW interactions occurred by phone (66%) or in person (28%). Frequently discussed topics included substance use, housing, and physical health. On average, participants spent 7.65 h (range 0-37.18, SD = 9.33) engaged with the intervention over 6 months. Intervention dose was associated with improved HIV control, decreased stimulant use, higher rates of recidivism, and improved clinical appointment show rate. Qualitative analyses revealed key intervention components, paralleling benefits of study participation alone: outreach, nonjudgmental approach, motivation and accountability. Conclusions A CHW-re-entry intervention, while resource-intensive, shows preliminary promise in improving HIV and some substance use outcomes. Frequent telephone and in-person contact, with an empathetic yet goal-oriented approach, fostered participant support and motivation to address HIV and substance use. Participants reported that engagement in research provided accountability and a sense of purpose. Future studies should focus on optimizing implementation of CHW-based interventions to enhance impact on vulnerable populations.

Developing digital learning materials, especially video lectures, is becoming an important issue in education. The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has made the creation of videos easier compared to the traditional approach. However, the education sector has yet to benefit from these advanced technologies fully. This research explores the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in creating digital learning videos. The study uses 43 selected articles and the PRISMA analysis model to search, classify, and content-filter the results. The findings show a noticeable growth in using AI to create digital learning videos, with 33 topics formed from keywords and articles published in various journals. The most influential works include automatic content extraction from videos and virtual teachers, and there is significant interest in ChatGPT. The main research topics include • developing effective AI models to convert text to video, • integrating personalization and interaction features, and • applying these digital learning videos in education and training. However, many issues remain to be researched, such as enhancing the context-understanding capabilities of AI models and building frameworks to evaluate the effectiveness of videos. AI-generated videos' quality, reliability, and flexibility are significant unresolved challenges, opening up research gaps for future scholars.

Investigating natural-inspired applications is a perennially appealing subject for scientists. The current increase in the speed of natural-origin structure growth may be linked to their superior mechanical properties and environmental resilience. Biological composite structures with helicoidal schemes and designs have remarkable capacities to absorb impact energy and withstand damage. However, there is a dearth of extensive study on the influence of fiber redirection and reorientation inside the matrix of a helicoid structure on its mechanical performance and reactivity. The present study aimed to explore the static and transient responses of a bio-inspired helicoid laminated composite (B-iHLC) shell under the influence of an explosive load using an isomorphic method. The structural integrity of the shell is maintained by a viscoelastic basis known as the Pasternak foundation, which encompasses two coefficients of stiffness and one coefficient of damping. The equilibrium equations governing shell dynamics are obtained by using Hamilton's principle and including the modified first-order shear theory, therefore obviating the need to employ a shear correction factor. The paper's model and approach are validated by doing numerical comparisons with respected publications. The findings of this study may be used in the construction of military and civilian infrastructure in situations when the structure is subjected to severe stresses that might potentially result in catastrophic collapse. The findings of this paper serve as the foundation for several other issues, including geometric optimization and the dynamic response of similar mechanical structures.

Aldehyde dehydrogenase-1A1 (ALDH1A1), a member of a superfamily of 19 isozymes, exhibits various biological functions and is involved in several important physiological and pathological processes, including those associated with various diseases including cancers such as pancreatic cancer. Chemotherapy is one of the most important strategies for the treatment of pancreatic cancer; however, the chemoresistance exhibited by pancreatic cancer cells is a leading cause of chemotherapy failure. It has been reported that overexpression of ALDH1A1 significantly correlates with poor prognosis and tumor aggressiveness, and is clinically associated with chemoresistance. Additionally, ALDH1A1 may serve as a novel regulator for the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer resistance. In particular, ALDH1A1 can promote cancer progression by facilitating the manifestation of cancer stem cell properties. However, the molecular mechanism by which ALDH1A1 clinically regulates the development of chemoresistance, and its role in prognosis and cancer stem cells, including pancreatic cancer stem cells, remain unclear. Therefore, the current review aims to summarize the clinical functions of ALDH1A1 as a novel regulator of chemoresistance, prognosis, and cancer stem cell development in pancreatic cancer.

This study examines John Locke’s educational philosophy and explores its relevance and potential application in the context of contemporary Vietnamese education. John Locke (1632–1704), a pivotal figure in English philosophy, developed a comprehensive educational framework emphasizing intellectual, moral, and physical development. His approach is distinguished by its focus on moral education, the cultivation of good habits, and the use of gentle, persuasive teaching methods rather than punitive measures. Locke advocated for individualized education tailored to each child’s unique characteristics, an idea that continues to resonate in modern educational practices. This paper analyzes Locke’s educational objectives, content, and methods, highlighting their progressive nature and how they can be integrated into Vietnam’s ongoing educational reforms. By drawing on the positive elements of Locke’s philosophy, this study provides insights into how Vietnam can enhance its education system to better meet the needs of its students and align with international educational standards.

In structural health monitoring, determining the location and index of damage is a critical task in order to ensure the safe operation of the construction project and to enable the early recovery of losses. This paper presents a novel method for identifying damage location and damage index in simply supported (SS) beams by analyzing deflection changes at the mid-span point. Theoretical equations for mid-span deflection of simply supported beams with local damage are derived based on the principle of Virtual Work. Utilizing mid-span deflection, formulas for deflection change (DC) between two structural states, along with the first and second derivatives of DC at the mid-span point, are developed. The method of determining the location and damage index is then extended from intact beams to cases of beams with multiple damage zones and from damaged beams to beams with new failures. The graphical analysis of these quantities facilitates the determination of the number, location, and index of new damages. Various case studies on simply supported beams, involving one, two, and four damage zones at different positions and with varying damage indexes, are examined. The comparison of the theoretical method with the numerical simulations using Midas FEA NX 2020 (v1.1) software yields consistent results, affirming the accuracy and efficacy of the proposed approach in identifying and determining the damage locations as well as the damage indices.

Innovation enables organizations to swiftly adapt to market dynamics, technological advancements, and the competitive environment, hence augmenting their competitive edge. Innovation endeavors provide challenges due to their substantial financial requirements, business environment, and the need for proficient management. This research examines the role of the business environment and access to finance in influencing firm innovation effectiveness, encompassing organisational innovation and product innovation, both individually and as a simultaneous combination of both innovation activities. The business environment comprises four factors such as business licensing and permits, corruption, customs and trade regulations, and an inadequately educated workforce. Additionally, this study explores the moderating role of manager working experience in accessing finance and firm innovation. The research used a large dataset of firm-level data (996 observations) from 2006 to 2016 in the World Bank Enterprise Survey specifically extracted for the Vietnamese market. The research methodology employs multinomial probit models to analyze datasets with layers of distinct financial access levels, including minor, moderate, significant, and severe obstacles, combined with alternate testing of four business environment factors. The research results highlight limitations in financial access at different levels, leading to a reduction in both organisational and product innovation. Customs emerge as the most significant barrier in the business environment for all levels of financial access, followed by licensing and permits, corruption, and the labor workforce as obstacles at varying degrees of financial access. Managerial working experience has mitigated obstacles to financial access for both organisational and product innovation. The study outcomes contribute to both theory and management implications.

BackgroundIn Vietnam, multiple types of community-based malaria workers are recruited to promote access to malaria testing and treatment for at-risk mobile and migrant populations. However, as the country approaches elimination, these roles are at risk from declining investment. This article characterises the different types of workers and relevant health policy in Vietnam, and explores stakeholder perspectives on sustaining and expanding the roles of these workers in the malaria elimination context.MethodsWe conducted a rapid policy document review to describe the policy background of community-based health care in Vietnam and identify key informants. In-depth interviews were conducted with policymakers and implementers (n = 11) in different government sectors, international, and civil society organizations. We also conducted interviews (n = 8) and two focus group discussions with community members (n = 12), and interviews with health workers (n = 9) in 18 communities in Phu Yen and Binh Thuan provinces in the central region.ResultsOur study identified three main types of malaria workers: village health workers (VHWs), malaria post workers (MPWs) and other groups of workers supported by civil society organisations (CSO). Workers reported being willing to maintain their current roles and potentially provide additional services that respond to community needs, although they were concerned about excess workload and inadequate income. Besides working in a variety of jobs to secure their incomes, mainly in agriculture, VHWs in particular were primarily tasked with supporting the delivery of a wide range of health services from commune health stations. Faced with reduced patients, MPWs and CSO-supported workers could be tasked with the following potential roles: case notification for infectious diseases, real-time data collection and reporting, and screening for non-malaria illnesses using other rapid test kits. There was agreement that the community-based health network is crucial to health care delivery in remote communities and to ensure comprehensive access to care among vulnerable populations. However, policymakers and implementers stressed concerns about their limited skillsets, the inadequate budget to support these workers, and the regulation constraining them from performing diagnosis and treatment activities, highlighting the priority to maintain the capacity of workers and funding allocation through provincial advocacy and multi-programme collaboration.ConclusionsThis study highlights the crucial role of community-based health workers in eliminating malaria in Vietnam. Sustained efforts are needed to maintain accessible case detection and treatment while addressing local health concerns beyond malaria. Implementing these strategies requires prioritizing the mapping of groups most in need and developing enablers to raise community awareness and maintain the capacity of these workers. Ensuring political advocacy, financial resources, and coordination between multiple groups are key to maximizing impact and integrating malaria activities into the broader health system.

Flood damage is becoming increasingly severe in the context of climate change and changes in land use. Assessing the effects of these changes on floods is important, to help decision-makers and local authorities understand the causes of worsening floods and propose appropriate measures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of climate and land use change on flood susceptibility in Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam, using machine learning techniques (support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF)) and remote sensing. The machine learning models used a flood inventory including 1,864 flood locations and 11 conditional factors in 2017 and 2021, as the input data. The predictive capacity of the proposed models was assessed using the area under the curve (AUC), the root mean square error (RMSE), and the mean absolute error (MAE). Both proposed models were successful, with AUC values exceeding 0.95 in predicting the effects of climate and land use change on flood susceptibility. The RF model, with AUC = 0.98, outperformed the SVM model (AUC = 0.97). The areas most susceptible to flooding increased between 2017 and 2021 due to increased built-up area. HIGHLIGHTS Machine learning algorithms were applied for flood susceptibility modeling.; The RF model had the highest AUC value (0.98).; The areas highly flood susceptibility increased between 2017 and 2021.;

The study aims to determine the influencing factors and their impact levels on residential land prices. The research investigated 241 officials, real estate investors, appraisers, and real estate brokers on factors affecting residential land prices. Research results have shown 13 groups with 45 factors affecting the price of residential land. The impact rates of the factor groups range from 1.43% to 23.65%. The COVID-19 pandemic factor group has the strongest impact on land prices, followed by other factor groups, including upgrading administrative units; formulation and implementation of the planning; the real estate market; financial – economics; credit; real estate brokerage; infrastructure; location of the land parcel; particular factors; juridical factors; environment and social security. To harmonize the interests of the State, investors, and land users when valuing land, it is necessary to pay attention to the factors that strongly impact land prices first, and then the smaller ones.

Irrigation and hydropower are among the most important sectors in the construction industry that propel the economic needs of a developing country like Vietnam. The construction of these projects often suffers from severe delays, leading to financial losses and other negative impacts on the economy. This paper aims to determine delay factors in the construction of these projects. Among many, 39 most important candidates of delay causes were identified from the literature review. Further surveys on project participants were conducted for the severity of these causes. An exploratory factor analysis was utilized to identify latent factors that cause delays in construction projects. The analysis result categorized a few groups of factors such as abnormal factors on the construction site (e.g., labor accidents, hydrology, water flow, extreme weather) and technical factors related to the construction contractor (e.g., unsuitable schedule, outdated construction technology, unprofessional workers) that have the greatest impact on the delay in construction of irrigation and hydropower projects in Vietnam. These findings contribute to the body of knowledge of project management and risk management, hence an improvement in the efficiency of the project sectors’ performance.

Higher education strongly focuses on shifting from a more traditional teaching approach - “instructivist” to a more student-centered approach – known as “constructivist” to encourage learning imperative key skills in a future turbulent environment. This study examines the application of new learning environment creation, integrated from applying the Design Science approach and Constructivism learning environment, on two critical elements of student evaluation, namely, students' learning motivation and their learning strategy in higher institutions. Quantitative research was adopted for the study. To do so, a new teaching and learning approach was developed and implemented specifically for one cohort. Instead of regularly joining a regular classroom, students can actively attend workshops to gain the skills, knowledge, and action they need to complete the course successfully. Following three months of implementation, 193 questionnaires were collected from all students who took a Project Management course. The data show that a constructivist learning environment encourages intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Additionally, the student's learning strategy significantly improved in the new learning environment. These findings demonstrate that further attention should be given to constructivist orientation and implementation in the higher education curriculum.

Abstract Objective Although epilepsy surgery is more effective than medical therapy for drug‐resistant patients, it is underutilized in both high‐income and low‐ and middle‐income countries. In light of our efforts to establish an epilepsy surgery program in a resource‐limited setting, this study aimed to determine the outcome of the epilepsy surgery program in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam. Methods In 2018, we developed the HCMC epilepsy core multidisciplinary team with members from various hospitals and centers. The team typically included neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, psychiatrists, and nursing specialists. Presurgical evaluations were performed for patients with drug‐resistant epilepsy, fulfilling the ILAE criteria, with an epileptogenic lesion (mesial temporal sclerosis, low‐grade gliomas, or focal cortical dysplasia). All epilepsy surgeries were performed in two epilepsy surgery centers in HCMC between 2018 and 2021. The patients were followed up for at least 12 months. Results Fifty‐two patients with drug‐resistant epilepsy underwent presurgical evaluation, of which 35 underwent surgery. Among the 52 patients, 20 (38.5%) underwent surgery after showing concordance among the results of standard presurgical assessments such as semiology, scalp interictal or ictal electroencephalography, and brain imaging. Among the 26 people with epilepsy who required more advanced evaluations, 15 underwent surgery with intraoperative electrocorticography to delineate the optimal resection borders. The outcomes of Engel Class I and Class II were achieved in 29/35 (82.8%) and 6/35 (17.2%) patients, respectively. Significance The epilepsy surgery program with a multicentered collaborative model in a resource‐limited setting showed favorable outcomes in HCMC, Vietnam.

This study examined the factors that affect the private sectors' willingness to invest in rural water supply. The study applied a mixed methods approach, including an overview of relevant studies, expert consultation, exploratory factor analysis using SPSS software, and a fuzzy-analytic hierarchy process to identify and evaluate the factors applicable to Ha Nam province in Vietnam. Some factors were distinguished that are significant to private investors’ rural water supply investment decisions, including tax incentive policy, policies to support preferred access to loans and credit, a state risk-sharing mechanism, a mechanism to adjust water price, community support, high community demand for clean water, and input water quality. In addition, the study constructed an investment attractiveness index to evaluate the attractiveness of private sector investment for two typical rural water supply projects in Ha Nam province. This index can be used as a basis for the government to design appropriate incentives to attract investment from private investors and construct an investment attractiveness map.
