SESAME and a consortium of five Helmholtz Centers are designing and installing a state-of-the-art soft X-Ray undulator beamline at the SESAME light source in Amman, Jordan. Funding is provided by the Helmholtz Association over a four year project cycle that started in January 2019. This is an interim report covering the first 36 months of the project where the construction and installation has been almost completed and commissioning and characterization of the beamline is about to start. Additionally, seminars, workshops, and a training program are part of the project aimed at establishing a broad user community.

The HESEB (Helmholtz-SESAME soft X-ray beamline) project is an initiative by the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers (HGF) to implement a new beamline at SESAME for scientific applications using soft X-ray spectroscopy techniques. The beamline design, procurement, and construction are being carried out by a consortium of the HGF centers DESY, FZJ, HZB, HZDR and KIT in collaboration with SESAME. The new beamline will be available for the SESAME user community within the four year project duration. It will allow for a large number of top-class scientific applications and provide new cooperation potentials with German and international research groups. The beamline is based on a variable-polarization undulator and a plane-grating monochromator covering an energy range 80 - 2000 eV. The optical design and the technical specifications have been completed and a call for tender procedure is ongoing. It is expected that the beamline will see first light in summer 2021. During the course of the project, the main goals to be achieved are (i) the construction and commissioning of the beamline at SESAME with a chamber for cultural heritage applications using spatially resolved soft X-ray fluorescence, (ii) the leveraging of additional contributions from the SESAME member countries to promote the build-up of international user consortia and to secure funding for experimental endstations and additional instrumentation, (iii) the training of SESAME staff at participating Helmholtz centers to enable reliable operation of the beamline by local staff, and (iv) the fostering of the establishment of a broad user community of HESEB from the SESAME member states through training, workshops, and schools. The first soft X-ray HESEB science workshop will take place in Istanbul beginning of 2020.

The present work is an overview of the TraMOOC (Translation for Massive Open Online Courses) research and innovation project, a machine translation approach for online educational content. More specifically, videolectures, assignments, and MOOC forum text is automatically translated from English into eleven European and BRIC languages. Unlike previous approaches to machine translation, the output quality in TraMOOC relies on a multimodal evaluation schema that involves crowdsourcing, error type markup, an error taxonomy for translation model comparison, and implicit evaluation via text mining, i.e. entity recognition and its performance comparison between the source and the translated text, and sentiment analysis on the students' forum posts. Finally, the evaluation output will result in more and better quality in-domain parallel data that will be fed back to the translation engine for higher quality output. The translation service will be incorporated into the Iversity MOOC platform and into the VideoLectures.net digital library portal.

Nitrogen (N) balances of soil-crop systems must be monitored more closely in the future to minimize ground water pollution. Maize was grown in rain-sheltered plots on a Flanagan silt-loam soil under three moisture regimes: Wet (W, weekly irrigations equal to water lost by a standard evaporation pan); Limited irrigation (L or 1/2 W) and Dryland (D, no irrigation). For each soil moisture regime, supplemental nitrogen (NH_4NO_3) was applied at 0, 125 and 250kg N ha^. Seedlings of common lambsquarter were transplanted 0.15m apart into the maize rows in sub-plots of each soil moisture regime at the medium N level or 125kg N ha^. Soil moisture profiles were measured twice weekly, leaf water potential (Ψ_) was monitored with a leaf pressure bomb and root growth was followed at weekly intervals using minirhizotron tubes. Generally yield correlated well with either Ψ_ or N per plant. Higher N or water applications led to less negative Ψ_ values, one stress substituting for the other in controlling crop stress or yield. Leaf % N as an indicator for yield was compromised by small differences among treatments within sampling dates and the N×Ψ_ interaction; Ψ_ as an indictator for when to irrigate was not compromised.

Shades for reducing available irradiance were placed over field-grown plants to measure light effects on root and shoot morphology and phenology. As reported in the past the ratios of leaf and shoot biomass to leaf area decreased with shade intensity. The 20%-of-ambient treatment greatly reduced corn root growth, but the trend from 70 to 27% ambient was weak. Kernel row numbers on the corn cob were sensitive to shade level. In general soybean was more shade tolerant than corn. The treatments supplying 49 to 20%-of-ambient resulted in longer internodes in soybean, which induced severe lodging. The many measurements reported are useful for generating logic for biomass dynamics in crop stands.

1.\ud Urban and rural populations of animals can differ in their behaviour, both in order to meet their\ud ecological requirements and due to the constraints imposed by different environments. The study\ud of urban populations can therefore offer useful insights into the behavioural flexibility of a species as\ud a whole, as well as indicating how the species in question adapts to a specifically urban environment.\ud 2.\ud The genetic structure of a population can provide information about social structure and\ud movement patterns that is difficult to obtain by other means. Using non-invasively collected hair\ud samples, we estimated the population size of Eurasian badgers\ud Meles meles\ud in the city of Brighton,\ud England, and calculated population-specific parameters of genetic variability and sex-specific rates\ud of outbreeding and dispersal.\ud 3.\ud Population density was high in the context of badger densities reported throughout their range.\ud This was due to a high density of social groups rather than large numbers of individuals per group.\ud 4.\ud The allelic richness of the population was low compared with other British populations. However,\ud the rate of extra-group paternity and the relatively frequent (mainly temporary) intergroup movements\ud suggest that, on a local scale, the population was outbred. Although members of both sexes visited\ud other groups, there was a trend for more females to make intergroup movements.\ud 5.\ud The results reveal that urban badgers can achieve high densities and suggest that while some\ud population parameters are similar between urban and rural populations, the frequency of intergroup\ud movements is higher among urban badgers. In a wider context, these results demonstrate the\ud ability of non-invasive genetic sampling to provide information about the population density, social\ud structure and behaviour of urban wildlife.

The feasibility of soft (low-energy) X-ray irradiation as a means of depleting the endogenous primordial germ cell(s) (PGC) of chicken embryos, to improve the efficiency of germ cell-mediated transgenesis, was investigated. Eggs were subjected to a non-irradiated control treatment and embryos were exposed for 40s to soft X-ray at 15, 16.5, or 18 kV ( approximately 1.5, 1.65, and 1.8 Gy, respectively). Exposure of stage X embryos to each dose of X-ray resulted in a reduction of approximately 50% in the number of PGC apparent at stage 28, whereas the total number of gonadal cells was unaffected. Irradiation (16.5 kV) of embryos at stage 9 or 14 also resulted in similar decreases in the number of PGC with no effect on the total number of gonadal cells. Irradiation did not affect embryo hatchability, compared with the non-irradiated control treatment, although the hatch rate increased with the age of embryos at the time of irradiation. Exposure of gonadal cells isolated from stage 28 embryos to X-ray (16.5 kV, approximately 0.8 Gy) prevented the increase in PGC number during subsequent culture for 10 days; the increase in the total number of gonadal cells was not affected. In conclusion, exposure of chicken embryos to a low dose of soft X-rays is effective for depleting the endogenous PGC population without affecting embryo hatchability or somatic cell viability.
