Abstract

Time resolved, in-situ, energy dispersive x-ray diffraction was performed in an electrolysis cell during electrochemical loading of palladium foil cathodes with hydrogen and deuterium. Concentrations of H:Pd (D:Pd) up to 1:1 in 0.1 M LiOH (LiOD) in H2O (D2O) electrolyte were obtained, as determined by both the Pd lattice parameter and cathode resistivity. In addition, some indications on the kinetics of loading and deloading of hydrogen from the Pd surface were obtained. The alpha-beta phase transformations were clearly delineated but no new phases at high concentration were determined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Data taken in aircraft transects of emissions plumes from rural U.S. coal-fired power plants were used to confirm and quantify the nonlinear dependence of tropospheric ozone formation on plume [NO.sub.x] (NO plus [NO.sub.2]) concentration, which is determined by plant [NO.sub.x] emission rate and atmospheric dispersion. The ambient availability of reactive volatile organic compounds, principally biogenic isoprene, was also found to modulate ozone production rate and yield in these rural plumes. Differences of a factor of 2 or greater in plume ozone formation rates and yields as a function of [NO.sub.x] and volatile organic compound concentrations were consistently observed. These Large differences suggest that consideration of power plant [NO.sub.x] emission rates and geographic locations in current and future U.S. ozone control strategies could substantially enhance the efficacy of [NO.sub.x] reductions from these sources., Ozone is the most abundant tropospheric oxidant and an important component of photochemical pollution. Abstract

From World War I (WWI) to the war in Iraq, helmets have transitioned from steel to Kevlar composite materials. Just prior to WWI, helmets were non-existent because mobility and weight requirements took precedence over protection. Today mobility, weight, comfort, and protection factor into helmet design based on current threats from various ammunition, fragmentation threats, and operational environments. Inside the helmet, liners have evolved from leather to plastic suspension to sophisticated energy-absorbing padded liners, and new prototype suspensions are being tested every year to improve comfort and increase protection. Because of recent medical advances, it is apparent that experimental methods, measurement devices, and newer classes of helmets are necessary to provide warfighters with the best personal protection equipment for combating traumatic brain injuries (TBI)., Published in NRL Review, p76-86, 2009.

Abstract

The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) led a government-university-industry team that developed the "QuadGard" arm and leg body armor from initial concept to industrial production over a period of 17 months. QuadGard provides extremity protection against fragments from conventional munitions and improvised explosive devices (IED's) in an innovative flexible design, based on combat casualty trends. Weighing only 10 lb, it achieved a high level of acceptance during test and evaluation by warfighters for its flexibility and comfort. The first three design phases were performed under an Office of Naval Research program, from April to December 2004. The final design phase and preparation for production was performed for the Marine Corps Systems Command (MCSC) in the spring of 2005. More than 4800 sets of QuadGard were then procured by MCSC for use by 50-caliber turret gunners and shipped forward for operations in Iraq between October 2005 and January 2006. An additional 300 sets were purchased by the Joint IED Defeat Task Force. These were delivered in November and December 2005 for test, evaluation, and operational use in Iraq by additional Marine Corps, Army, and Air Force units. Finally, 100 sets were purchased by the Naval Facilities Expeditionary Logistics Center in January 2006 for the Navy's Seabees in Iraq., Published in NRL Review, p73-81, 2006.

Abstract

The corrosion behavior of Mo-Al, Cr-Al and Cr-Mo-Al surface alloys produced by ion implantation and ion beam mixing was examined in deaerated, 0.1M NaC1. The polarization behavior of the ion implanted samples was similar to that of Al and the pitting potentials of the ion implanted samples were 115 to 155 mV higher than that of Al. From the standpoint of the Ph sub pzc model this behavior would be explained by the presence of the implanted cations in the stable oxide lattice. There was incomplete mixing of the coating and substrate for the ion beam mixed samples, and the mixed elements remained almost entirely in the metallic state so that the desired mixed oxide films were not formed. Ion beam mixing did impart additional stability compared to as-deposited samples since the mixing process produced more compact coatings.
