8. The Recess Period: A Key Moment of Prepubescent Children's Daily Physical Activity?

Abstract

This study was designed to analyze the significance of the recess period and "the effect of its duration" on children's daily physical activity. Thirteen pupils attending school in a rural area were monitored with accelerometers during the study weeks. The intervention consisted of modifying regularly scheduled recess period for a month. Data from two school days during the third week were recorded for analyses. Analyses indicated that, according to the recommended 2 x 15 min recess schedule, children spent on average from 16.9 [plus or minus] 5.7 min to 22.8 [plus or minus] 3.7 min each day in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) at recess; that is, 16.3% to 20.0% of their daily MVPA (comprised between 103.4 [plus or minus] 32.5 min and 113.9 [plus or minus] 32.5 min). This level of activity increased with the increased recess duration. A 1.2% increase of the time spent at recess resulted in a 6.6% increase of their activity (average 23% to 26.5%). It appears that a more appropriate reorganization of school schedule, including recess period and proper physical education classes, may be beneficial for school children to experience adequate amount of physical activity. Because changes in intrathoracic pressure during spontaneous breathing (SB) might be insufficient to modify loading conditions of the ventricles, performances of indicators were also assessed during a forced respiratory maneuver. Design Prospective interventional study. Setting A 34-bed university hospital medico-surgical ICU. Patients and participants Thirty-two SB patients with clinical signs of hemodynamic instability. Intervention A 500-ml volume expansion (VE). Measurements and results Cardiac index, assessed using transthoracic echocardiography, increased by at least 15% after VE in 19 patients (responders). At baseline, only dynamic indicators were higher in responders than in nonresponders (13a-+-a-5% vs. 7a-+-a-3%, pa-=a-0.003 for IPP and 10a-+-a-4% vs. 6a-+-a-2%, pa-=a-0.002 for ISP). Moreover, they significantly decreased after VE (11a-+-a-5% to 6a-+-a-4%, pa- Conclusions Due to their lack of sensitivity and their dependence to respiratory status, IPP and ISP are clearly less reliable to predict fluid responsiveness during SB than in mechanically ventilated patients. However, when their baseline value is high without acute right ventricular dysfunction in a participating patient, a positive response to fluid is likely. Abstract

It has been possible to prepare, at high temperatures and pressures, boron suboxide (B6O) in which the preferred form of the material is as macroscopic, almost perfect, regular icosahedra. The rhombohedral structure of B6O almost exactly fits the geometrical requirements for obtaining icosahedral twins. The B6O multiply-twinned particles are among the largest of self-assembled regular icosahedral particles identified so far.

Introduction The aim of the EuReCa ONE study was to determine the incidence, process, and outcome for out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) throughout Europe. Methods This was an international, prospective, multi-centre one-month study. Patients who suffered an OHCA during October 2014 who were attended and/or treated by an Emergency Medical Service (EMS) were eligible for inclusion in the study. Data were extracted from national, regional or local registries. Results Data on 10,682 confirmed OHCAs from 248 regions in 27 countries, covering an estimated population of 174 million. In 7146 (66%) cases, CPR was started by a bystander or by the EMS. The incidence of CPR attempts ranged from 19.0 to 104.0 per 100,000 population per year. 1735 had ROSC on arrival at hospital (25.2%), Overall, 662/6414 (10.3%) in all cases with CPR attempted survived for at least 30 days or to hospital discharge. Conclusion The results of EuReCa ONE highlight that OHCA is still a major public health problem accounting for a substantial number of deaths in Europe. EuReCa ONE very clearly demonstrates marked differences in the processes for data collection and reported outcomes following OHCA all over Europe. Abstract

Introduction: The aim of the EuReCa ONE study was to determine the incidence, process, and outcome for out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) throughout Europe. Methods: This was an international, prospective, multi-centre one-month study. Patients who suffered an OHCA during October 2014 who were attended and/or treated by an Emergency Medical Service (EMS) were eligible for inclusion in the study. Data were extracted from national, regional or local registries. Results: Data on 10,682 confirmed OHCAs from 248 regions in 27 countries, covering an estimated population of 174 million. In 7146 (66%) cases, CPR was started by a bystander or by the EMS. The incidence of CPR attempts ranged from 19.0 to 104.0 per 100,000 population per year. 1735 had ROSC on arrival at hospital (25.2%), Overall, 662/6414 (10.3%) in all cases with CPR attempted survived for at least 30 days or to hospital discharge. Conclusion: The results of EuReCa ONE highlight that OHCA is still a major public health problem accounting for a substantial number of deaths in Europe. EuReCa ONE very clearly demonstrates marked differences in the processes for data collection and reported outcomes following OHCA all over Europe. Using these data and analyses, different countries, regions, systems, and concepts can benchmark themselves and may learn from each other to further improve survival following one of our major health care events.
