Abstract

We present the results of experimental and theoretical study of the scattering of low energy p$\mu$ atoms in solid hydrogen cooled to 3 K. The resulting emission of low energy p$\mu$ atoms from the hydrogen layer into the adjacent vacuum was much higher than that predicted by calculations which ignored the solid nature of the hydrogen. New differential scattering cross sections have been calculated for the collisions of p$\mu$ atoms on solid hydrogen to acount for its quantum crystalline nature. Analysis of the experimental data performed using such cross sections shows the important role of the coherent scattering in p$\mu$ atom diffusion. For p$\mu$ energies lower than the Bragg cutoff limit (2 meV) the elastic Bragg scattering vanishes which makes the total scattering cross section fall by several orders of magnitude, and thus the hydrogen target becomes transparent allowing the emission of cold p$\mu$ atoms to occur., Comment: revtex4, 15 pages, 19 figures, 6 tables, submitted to PRA, revised

Abstract

Resonant scattering of muonic hydrogen atoms via back decay of molecular complex, a key process in the understanding of epithermal muonic molecular formation, is analyzed. The limitations of the effective rate approximation are discussed and the importance of the explicit treatment of the back decay is stressed. Abstract

Measurements of muon-catalyzed dt fusion ($d\mu t \to ^4He+n+\mu^-$) in solid HD have been performed. The theory describing the energy dependent resonant molecular formation rate for the reaction $\mu t$ + HD $\to [(d\mu t)pee]^*$ is compared to experimental results in a pure solid HD target. Constraints on the rates are inferred through the use of a Monte Carlo model developed specifically for the experiment. From the time-of- flight analysis of fusion events in 16 and 37 $\mu g\cdot cm^{-2}$ targets, an average formation rate consistent with 0.897$\pm$(0.046)$_{stat}\pm$ (0.166)$_{syst}$ times the theoretical prediction was obtained., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Studies of muonic hydrogen atoms and molecules have been performed traditionally in bulk targets of gas, liquid or solid. At TRIUMF, Canada's meson facility, we have developed a new type of target system using multilayer thin films of solid hydrogen, which provides a beam of muonic hydrogen atoms in vacuum. Using the time-of-flight of the muonic atoms, the energy-dependent information of muonic reactions are obtained in direct manner. Abstract

Studies of muonic atoms and muon catalyzed fusion have been conventionally done in a bulk target of gas, liquid or solid hydrogen isotopes. The use of thin film targets developed at TRIUMF have notable advantages in tackling some of the most important questions in the field, which could be further exploited at future high intensity muon sources. Abstract

Resonant formation of $d\mu t$ molecules in collisions of muonic tritium ($\mu t$) on D$_2$ was investigated using a beam of $\mu t$ atoms, demonstrating a new direct approach in muon catalyzed fusion studies. Strong epithermal resonances in $d\mu t$ formation were directly revealed for the first time. From the time-of-flight analysis of $2036\pm 116$ $dt$ fusion events, a formation rate consistent with $0.73\pm (0.16)_{meas} \pm (0.09)_{model}$ times the theoretical prediction was obtained. For the largest peak at a resonance energy of $0.423 \pm 0.037$ eV, this corresponds to a rate of $(7.1 \pm 1.8) \times 10^9$ s$^{-1}$, more than an order of magnitude larger than those at low energies., Comment: To appear in Phys. Abstract

Muon catalyzed fusion in deuterium has traditionally been studied in gaseous and liquid targets. The TRIUMF solid-hydrogen-layer target system has been used to study the fusion reaction rates in the solid phase of D_2 at a target temperature of 3 K. Products of two distinct branches of the reaction were observed; neutrons by a liquid organic scintillator, and protons by a silicon detector located inside the target system. The effective molecular formation rate from the upper hyperfine state of $\mu d$ and the hyperfine transition rate have been measured: $\tilde{\lambda}_(3/2)=2.71(7)_{stat.}(32)_{syst.} \mu/s$, and $\tilde{\lambda}_{(3/2)(1/2)} =34.2(8)_{stat.}(1)_{syst.} \mu /s$. The molecular formation rate is consistent with other recent measurements, but not with the theory for isolated molecules. The discrepancy may be due to incomplete thermalization, an effect which was investigated by Monte Carlo calculations. Abstract

A method is reported for measuring the thickness and uniformity of thin films of solidified gas targets. The energy of alpha particles traversing the film is measured and the energy loss is converted to thickness using the stopping power. The uniformity is determined by measuring the thickness at different positions with an array of sources. Monte Carlo simulations have been performed to study the film deposition mechanism. Abstract

The defect chemistry and electronic trapping energies in undoped single crystalline SrTiO3 were examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) at low (25-160°C) and intermediate (500-700°C) temperatures. At intermediate temperatures, the electronic and ionic conductivity as well as the chemical capacitance of SrTiO3 were determined as a function of T and p(O2) by employing a modified transmission line equivalent circuit to accurately describe the measured system. Defect modelling based on chemical capacitance measurements is established as a new method to determine the concentrations and the thermodynamic properties of ionic and electronic defects in SrTiO3. This method has potential for a wide application for mixed ionic and electronic conducting materials. Impedance spectroscopy at low temperatures was used to further quantify the electronic trapping energies of the main ionic defects of SrTiO3. Utilization of the chemical capacitance allows the establishment of a defect model based solely on electrochemical measurements, which correctly predicts the conductivity and the chemical capacitance, unveiling the concentrations of internal defects. This analysis yields a concentration of 6 ppm for acceptor-type titanium vacancies in the investigated SrTiO3 single crystals, which was experimentally confirmed by complementary Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy measurements. The employed method is sensitive for electronically relevant defects in concentrations even below 1 ppm.

Abstract

Measurements of muon-catalyzed dt fusion ($d��t \to ^4He+n+��^-$) in solid HD have been performed. The theory describing the energy dependent resonant molecular formation rate for the reaction $��t$ + HD $\to [(d��t)pee]^*$ is compared to experimental results in a pure solid HD target. Constraints on the rates are inferred through the use of a Monte Carlo model developed specifically for the experiment. From the time-of- flight analysis of fusion events in 16 and 37 $��g\cdot cm^{-2}$ targets, an average formation rate consistent with 0.897$\pm$(0.046)$_{stat}\pm$ (0.166)$_{syst}$ times the theoretical prediction was obtained., 4 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Resonant formation of $d��t$ molecules in collisions of muonic tritium ($��t$) on D$_2$ was investigated using a beam of $��t$ atoms, demonstrating a new direct approach in muon catalyzed fusion studies. Strong epithermal resonances in $d��t$ formation were directly revealed for the first time. From the time-of-flight analysis of $2036\pm 116$ $dt$ fusion events, a formation rate consistent with $0.73\pm (0.16)_{meas} \pm (0.09)_{model}$ times the theoretical prediction was obtained. For the largest peak at a resonance energy of $0.423 \pm 0.037$ eV, this corresponds to a rate of $(7.1 \pm 1.8) \times 10^9$ s$^{-1}$, more than an order of magnitude larger than those at low energies., To appear in Phys. Abstract

We present the final results of an experimental study of µd and µt atom scattering in solid hydrogen cooled to 3 K. Strong effects resulting from the Ramsauer-Townsend effect have been observed in the TRIUMF experiment E742 where muons were stopped in thin frozen layers of hydrogen. The measured Ramsauer-Townsend minimum energy for both µd and µt atoms and the minimum cross section are in agreement with theory

Abstract

Sr-doped lanthanum manganite (LSM) is a widely used cathode material in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). Despite being a poor ion conductor, LSM electrodes can reduce oxygen via two pathways: a "3PB surface path" which includes surface diffusion of oxygen species and oxide ion incorporation at the three phase boundary (3PB), and a "bulk path" based on oxygen diffusion in LSM. In this work, the kinetics of both paths and their dependence on temperature and electrode geometry is investigated by impedance spectroscopy on micropatterned LSM thin film electrodes. Differently shaped and sized macroscopic and microscopic LSM electrodes as well as LSM electrodes with oxygen blocking Pt capping layers are employed to identify two parallel reaction pathways of oxygen reduction. On circular microelectrodes the 3PB surface path carries most of the current in the lower temperature region (below ca. 700°C), while at high temperatures (above ca. 700°C) the bulk path is dominating. The significance of each reduction path also depends on the microstructure of the columnar LSM films which can be changed by varying pulsed laser deposition (PLD) parameters or by annealing. Moreover, relevance of a pseudo-3PB path across edges of the LSM electrodes is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
