Abstract

Groups tend to discuss and repeat information known by all members (shared) more than they do information known by one member (unshared). One factor that may influence this effect is the tendency for members to positively evaluate one another when mentioning shared information. Three experiments demonstrated this 'mutual enhancement' effect. Experiment 1 showed that mutual enhancement was related to participants' and their partners' exchanging the same pieces of information. Experiment 2 illustrated that mutual enhancement was not related to the extent that participants liked partners or saw them as having similar opinions. Experiment 3 showed mutual enhancement in face-to-face dyads that discussed shared information. A combined analysis across the 3 experiments showed the robustness of mutual enhancement. Implications of mutual enhancement for group discussion are considered.

Abstract

The propensity to believe information to be predominately truthful has been called the truth-bias (e.g., McCornack & Levine, 1990), although the lie-bias is the tendency to believe that information is mostly false. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the effect that timing of suspicion and outcome involvement has on biased message processing. A two-way interaction between timing of suspicion and outcome involvement is hypothesized. Specifically, suspicion induced prior to communication will make receivers more suspicious of the communicator and therefore encode more of their nonverbal cues as 'suspicious' or 'fishy.' This effect is predicted to be magnified in conditions of high outcome involvement. If receivers are already suspicious, and carefully scrutinizing the message, it will be likely that they will note more 'fishy behaviors' and demonstrate a heightened lie-bias. In two studies, Participants (Ps) were asked to view videotaped segments of a confiderate making true or false statements. The Ps were induced to feel suspicious before or after viewing the videotaped interview. They were also induced to perceive high or low levels of outcome involvement. Results of Study 1 indicated that timing of suspicion has little effect on biased processing, but perceived suspicion did influence biased processing. Results of Study 2 indicated that the timing of suspicion did influence the strength of the truth-bias but did not create a lie-bias. Both studies demonstrated the strong effect of perceived outcome involvement on honesty perceptions. Key words: Suspicion, Involvement, Message Processing

Abstract

Background: Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the U.S. and has been called the number one behavioral health problem. Although 1 in every 5 Americans smoke cigarettes, approximately 70% report that they want to quit smoking. There are many public health self-management interventions for smoking cessation that have been found to be effective; however, they are substantially underutilized. As more than half of smokers see a dentist at least once per year, patient referrals at point of care to a self-managed smoking cessation intervention could greatly increase their use. Methods: We conducted a randomized controlled trial with community-based dental practices testing point-of care referrals of smokers to an interactive, tailored patient education website. Intervention practices referred patients via an electronic referral system (ReferASmoker) and control practices referred patients via a paper-based information prescription. Both control and intervention practices had access to the ReferASmoker website that has resources to assist with tobacco cessation services. The intervention practices, but not the control practices, received feedback about their number of patient referrals and the referral numbers of their peers. Results: One hundred and one community-based dental practices from 8 states referred close to 1,900 patients to a patient education website for the self-management of smoking cessation. Based on estimates by the dental practices, the majority of patients were between the ages of 19 and 64 years, 23% of patients seen in participating practices were African American and 61% of practices saw patients with private insurance. Control and intervention practices were similar at baseline on all characteristics assessed except control practices had a higher self-reported proportion of African American patients. Based on the project coordinator comments, the ReferASmoker website was easy to use and offered useful resources to assist with tobacco control services. Conclusions: Providers actively engaged in the program and were willing to refer patients to an online, tailored patient education website. Abstract

Fear appeals threatening the individual have been shown to be powerful persuasive devices in the cultures where they have been studied. However, most fear appeal research has been conducted with members of individualist cultures. Individualist cultures place self-needs above group concerns, while collectivist cultures place group needs above self-concerns. Little is known about the effectiveness of fear appeals (or other persuasive strategies) in collectivist cultures. Two studies assessed the effectiveness of AIDS-prevention fear appeals threatening the self versus fear appeals threatening the group (i.e., family) on members of individualist and collectivist cultures. The first study focuses on African American and Mexican immigrant junior high school youth. The second study focuses on U.S. and Taiwanese college undergraduates. The results indicated that fear appeals should address cultural orientation (i.e., individualist versus collectivist orientation) to achieve maximum effectiveness. Abstract

A conference paper on a randomized controlled trial which examined the point-of care referrals of smokers by community-based dental practices to an interactive, tailored patient education website is presented. The paper concluded that the "ReferASmoker" tool is easy to use and offers useful resources to assist with tobacco control services.
