The introductory section of the first of two related guides provides information that describes and assists in teaching a curriculum on HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). The introduction discusses the scope of the problem and includes an overview of the curriculum, a review of teaching strategies, teaching tips, a sample letter to parents, and answers to questions solicited from students. Section 1 of the instructor's guide contains a set of lesson plans that coordinates with information and worksheets from the student guide. The lessons are presented in a suggested sequence that can be used for grades 5, 6, or 7. The six lesson titles and the analogous titles in the student guide are as follows: (1) How Infectious Diseases Spread (What is AIDS?); (2) HIV: An Infectious Disase (Who Has HIV Infection?); (3) HIV: Fact or Fiction (What Does HIV Do to the Body?); (4) The Last Time I Was Sick (What Are the Symptoms of HIV Infection?); (5) Protection against Disease (How Is HIV Infection Spread?); and (6) Saying No (How Can HIV Infection Be Prevented?). Section 2 of the guide contains different types of questions that can be used for evaluation. The appendix provides a listing of additional sources and a glossary of terms from the student guide. This module includes seven lessons designed to help students in grades 9-12 enhance their present and future levels of fitness. It begins with an exploration of the meaning and benefits of fitness. In lesson 1, students complete an inventory to assess their present level of physical activity. Lesson 2 deals with students' feelings about their physical appearance, and includes suggestions for enhancing body image. In lesson 3, students complete a series of activities that measure their present levels of physical fitness, and in lesson 4, students use this information to assess their individual fitness. This lesson includes an aerobic workout, and students develop a plan to maintain aerobic fitness. In lesson 5, students look at ways to enhance other elements of personal fitness, including body composition, flexibility, muscular strength, and endurance. Lesson 6 helps students identify myths and facts about exercise. It also examines some of the factors that influence the success of an exercise program. Lesson 7 deals with the importance of attitude and lifestyle related to physical fitness, then uses this information to develop personal fitness plans. Students are also given an opportunity to survey people who exercise regularly and develop a report. Lessons include information about objectives, materials, instructional strategies and procedures, evaluation, and the subject matter for teachers; and worksheets and handouts for students. (LLL)

This book provides detailed up-to-date information about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), chlamydia, herpes, syphilis, genital warts, and gonorrhea. Designed to help students make choices that eliminate or reduce the risk of contracting an STD, this module gives high school teachers six developmentally planned lessons, varied instructional strategies, creative activities, and a culturally sensitive approach to educating about STDs. The book: (1) discusses the symptoms and consequences of STDs; (2) promotes abstinence as the best preventive behavior for teens; (3) presents steps for reinforcing abstinent behaviors; (4) provides information on the correct use of condoms; and (5) offers sources for obtaining information, diagnosis, and treatment of STDs.
