However, its clinical application was strongly hampered by its low bioavailability and poor water solubility. Herein, a series of glycosylated silibinin derivatives were identified as novel anti-tumor agents.Materials and Methods: The cell viability was evaluated by CCK8 assay. Furthermore, cell apoptosis and cell cycle progression were tested by flow cytometry. In addition, the pharmacokinetic assessment of compound 15 and silibinin through intravenous administration (i.v., 2 mg/kg) to ICR mice were performed.Results: The synthesized compounds showed better water solubilities than silibinin. Among them, compound 15 exhibited inhibitory activity against DU145 cells with IC50 value of 1.37 ± 0.140 μM. Moreover, it arrested cell cycle at G2/M phase and induced apoptosis in DU145 cells. Additionally, compound 15 also displayed longer half-life (T1/2 = 128.3 min) in liver microsomes than that of silibinin (T1/2 = 82.5 min) and appropriate pharmacokinetic parameters in mice.Conclusion: Overall, glycosylation of silibinin would be a valid strategy for the development of silibinin derivatives as anti-tumor agents.Graphical Abstract: Keywords: glycosylation, silibinin derivatives, solubility, anti-proliferative activity

Therefore, further understanding of the metastatic mechanism and the development of treatment strategies are required. Although increasing evidence suggests that SWI/SNF Related, Matrix Associated, Actin Dependent Regulator of Chromatin, Subfamily E, Member 1 (SMARCE1) promotes cancer metastasis, its role in GC remains unclear.Materials and methods: GC samples (n=122) were used to investigate the association between SMARCE1 expression, patient clinicopathological features, and prognosis. The expression of SMARCE1 in GC tissues was measured using real-time polymerase chain reaction, western blotting, and immunohistochemistry. MGC-803 and AGS cells were transfected with lentivirus to upregulate or downregulate SMARCE1 expression. The roles of SMARCE1 in GC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion were determined using Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, colony formation assay, wound healing, transwell migration, and invasion assay. Nude mice models were established to observe tumorigenesis. The specific mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitor U0126 was utilized to verify the involved pathway.Results: SMARCE1 was highly expressed in GC tissues and cell lines. In early trials, S-1 monotherapy was effective for mCRC patients after chemotherapy failure and its combination with oral leucovorin therapy offers promising results in untreated mCRC. Hence, we conduct a Phase II trial to assess the efficacy of S-1 plus oral leucovorin (SL) in refractory mCRC that progressed after multiple prior standard therapies.Methods: In this open-label, single-arm study, we enrolled the refractory mCRC patients who received fluoropyrimidine, oxaliplatin, and irinotecan treatment and at least one targeted therapy previously. The doses of SL were 40–60 and 30 mg twice daily separately. They were administered for 7 days in a 2-week cycle. Treatment was continued until disease progression.Results: Of the 41 enrolled patients, 36 patients were evaluable with 61.1% disease control rate. The median progression-free survival and overall survival were 2.55 and 7.63 months, respectively. Regression change in tumor size stayed 10%–20% in five patients (13.9%) through 18 weeks after treatment, and two patients continued free from tumor progression at 30 and 42 weeks. Compared with moderate heavily pretreated mCRC patient subgroup (≤4 prior regimens), the severe heavily pretreated subgroup (≥5 prior regimens) showed similar disease control rate and survival benefit. Grade 3 or higher toxicities were documented only in 11 patients (26.8%).Conclusion: SL shows potential as a salvage regimen in refractory mCRC patients especially in the severe heavily pretreated setting and is well tolerated in these patients. 4. Biogeochemical interactions control a temporal succession in the elemental composition of marine communities

Abstract

Recent studies have revealed clear regional differences in the particulate organic matter composition and stoichiometry of plankton communities. In contrast, less is known about potential mechanisms and patterns of temporal changes in the elemental composition of marine systems. Here, we monitored weekly changes in environmental conditions, phytoplankton abundances, and particulate organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus concentrations over a 3-yr period. We found that variation in the particulate organic matter (POM) concentrations and ratios were related to seasonal oscillations of environmental conditions and phytoplankton abundances. Periods with low temperature, high nutrient concentrations and a dominance of large phytoplankton corresponded to low C: N: P and vice-versa for warmer periods during the summer and fall. In addition to seasonal changes, we observed a multiyear increase in POM C: P and N: P that might be associated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. Finally, there was substantial short-term variability in all factors but similar linkages between environmental variability and elemental composition as observed on seasonal and interannual time-scales. Using a feed-forward neural network, we could explain a large part of the variation in POM concentrations and ratios based on changes in environmental conditions and phytoplankton abundances. The apparent links across all time-scales between changes in physics, chemistry, phytoplankton, and POM concentrations and ratios suggest we have identified key controls of the elemental composition of marine communities in this region.

Abstract

We present the results of deep Chandra imaging of the central region of the Extended Groth Strip, the AEGIS-X Deep (AEGIS-XD) survey. When combined with previous Chandra observations of a wider area of the strip, AEGIS-X Wide (AEGIS-XW), these provide data to a nominal exposure depth of 800 ks in the three central ACIS-I fields, a region of approximately 0.29 deg2. This is currently the third deepest X-ray survey in existence; a factor shallower than the Chandra Deep Fields (CDFs), but over an area ∼3 times greater than each CDF. We present a catalog of 937 point sources detected in the deep Chandra observations, along with identifications of our X-ray sources from deep ground-based, Spitzer, GALEX, and Hubble Space Telescope imaging. Using a likelihood ratio analysis, we associate multiband counterparts for 929/937 of our X-ray sources, with an estimated 95% reliability, making the identification completeness approximately 94% in a statistical sense. Reliable spectroscopic redshifts for 353 of our X-ray sources are available predominantly from Keck (DEEP2/3) and MMT Hectospec, so the current spectroscopic completeness is ∼38%. For the remainder of the X-ray sources, we compute photometric redshifts based on multiband photometry in up to 35 bands from the UV to mid-IR. Particular attention is given to the fact that the vast majority the X-ray sources are active galactic nuclei and require hybrid templates. Our photometric redshifts have mean accuracy of and an outlier fraction of approximately 5%, reaching with less than 4% outliers in the area covered by CANDELS . The X-ray, multiwavelength photometry, and redshift catalogs are made publicly available.

Abstract

Using 1.06 × 108ψ (3686) events recorded in e+e-, collisions at √s = 3.686 GeV with the BESIII at the BEPCII collider, we present searches for C-parity violation in J/ψ → γγ and γφ decays via ψ(3686) → J/ψπ+π-. No significant signals are observed in either channel. Upper limits on the branching fractions are set to be B(J/ψ → γγ) < 2.7 × 10-7, and B(J/ψ → γφ>) < 1.4 × 10-6, at the 90% confidence level. The former is one order of magnitude more stringent than the previous upper limit, and the latter represents the first limit on this decay channel.

Abstract

Using 2.25 × 108, J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage rings, we observe for the first time the process J/ψ → pp¯a0(980), a0(980) → π0η with a significance of 6.5σ (3.2σ including systematic uncertainties). The product branching fraction of J/ψ → pp¯a0 (980) → pp¯ π0η is measured to be (6.8 ± 1.2 ± 1.3) × 10-5, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. This measurement provides information on the a0 production near threshold coupling to pp and improves the understanding of the dynamics of J/ψ decays to four-body processes.

Abstract

The process e+e−→ pp̄π0has been studied by analyzing data collected at (formula presented) GeV, at (formula presented) GeV, and during a ψ(3770) line shape scan with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross section of p̄pπ0in the vicinity of the ψ(3770) is measured, and the Born cross section of ψ(3770) → p̄pπ0is extracted considering interference between resonant and continuum production amplitudes. Two solutions with the same probability and a significance of 1.5 σ are found. The solutions for the Born cross section of ψ(3770) → p̄pπ0are 33.8 ± 1.8 ± 2.1 pb and (formula presented) pb (< 0.22 pb at a 90% confidence level). Using the estimated cross section and a constant decay amplitude approximation, the cross section σ(p̄p → ψ(3770)π0) is calculated for the kinematic situation of the planned P̄ANDA experiment. The maximum cross section corresponding to the two solutions is expected to be less than 0.79 nb at 90% confidence level and 122 ± 10 nb at a center-of-mass energy of 5.26 GeV.

Using 2917pb -1 of data accumulated at 3.773GeV, 44.5pb -1 of data accumulated at 3.65GeV and data accumulated during a ψ(3770) line-shape scan with the BESIII detector, the reaction e+e-→pp- is studied considering a possible interference between resonant and continuum amplitudes. The cross section of e+e-→ψ(3770)→pp-, σ(e+e-→ψ(3770)→pp-), is found to have two solutions, determined to be (0.059-0.020+0.070±0.012)pb with the phase angle φ=(255.8-26.6+39.0±4.8)° (

Abstract

An energy scan near the τ pair production threshold has been performed using the BESIII detector. About 24 pb-1 of data, distributed over four scan points, were collected. This analysis is based on τ pair decays to ee, eμ, eh, μμ, μh, hh, eρ, μρ and πρ final states, where h denotes a charged π or K. The mass of the τ lepton is measured from a maximum likelihood fit to the τ pair production cross-section data to be mτ = (1776.91 ± 0.12-0.13+0.10) MeV=c2, which is currently the most precise value in a single measurement.

Abstract

Using a sample of 1.3 × 10(9)  J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of η(')→π(+)π(-)π(+)π(-) and η(')→π(+)π(-)π(0)π(0). The measured branching fractions are B(η(')→π(+)π(-)π(+)π(-)) = [8.53 ± 0.69(stat.) ± 0.64(syst.)]×10(-5) and B(η(')→π(+)π(-)π(0) π(0)) = [1.82 ± 0.35(stat.) ± 0.18(syst.)] × 10(-4), which are consistent with theoretical predictions based on a combination of chiral perturbation theory and vector-meson dominance.

Abstract

By using a 2.92 fb-1 data sample taken at √s = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, we search for the radiative transitions ψ(3770) → γηc and γηc(2S) through the hadronic decays ηc(ηc (2S)) → K0SK±π+. No significant excess of signal events above background is observed. We set upper limits at a 90% confidence level for the product branching fractions to be B(ψ(3770) →γηc) ±B(ηc → K0SK±π+) < 1.6× 10-5 and B(ψ(3770) →γηc(2S)) ×B(ηc(2S) → K0SK+π+) 6.8 × 10-4 and B(ψ(3770) → γηc(2S)) < 2.0 × 10-3 at a 90% confidence level.

Abstract

With 1.06 × 108 ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector, the branching fraction of ψ (3686) → ωK+K- is measured to be (1.54 ± 0.04 ± 0.11) × 10-4. This is the most precise result to date, due to the largest ψ(3686) sample, improved signal reconstruction efficiency, good simulation of the detector performance, and a more accurate knowledge of the continuum contribution. Using the branching fraction of J/ψ → ωK+K-, the ratio β(ψ(3868) → ωK+K-)/β(J/ψ → ωK+K-) is determined to be (18.4 ± 3.7)%. This constitutes a significantly improved test of the 12% rule, with the uncertainty now dominated by the J/ψ branching fraction.

Abstract

We study D0D̅0 pairs produced in e+e− collisions at √ s = 3.773 GeVusing a data sample of 2.92 fb−1 collected with the BESIII detector. We measuredthe asymmetry ACPKπ of the branching fractions of D → K−π+ in CP-odd and CP-even eigenstates to be (12.7 ± 1.3 ± 0.7) × 10−2. ACPKπ can be used to extract the strong phase difference δKπ between the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed process D̅0 → K−π+ and the Cabibbo-favored process D0 → K−π+. Using world-average values of external parameters, we obtain cos δKπ = 1.02 ±0.11 ±0.06 ±0.01. Here, the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, while the third uncertainty arises from the external parameters. This is the most precise measurement of δKπ to date.

Abstract

Based on a sample of (225.3 ± 2.8) × 106 J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, the electromagnetic Dalitz decays of J/ψ → Pe+e- (P = η'/η/π∗0) are studied. By reconstructing the pseudoscalar mesons in various decay modes, the decays J/ψ → η' e+e-, J/ψ → η e+e-, and J/ψ → π0 e+e- are observed for the first time. The branching fractions are determined to be B(J/ψ → η' e+e-) = (5.81 ± 0.16 ± 0.31) × 10-5, B(J/ψ → η e+e-) = (1.16 ± 0.07 ± 0.06) × 10-5, and B(J/ψ → π0 e+e-) = (7.56 ± 1.32 ±0.50) × 10-7, where the first errors are statistical and the second ones systematic.

Abstract

We study the process e+ e- →(D* D*)± π∓ at a center-of-mass energy of 4.26 GeV using a 827  pb(-1) data sample obtained with the BESIII detector at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider. Based on a partial reconstruction technique, the Born cross section is measured to be (137±9±15)  pb. We observe a structure near the (D* D*)± threshold in the π∓ recoil mass spectrum, which we denote as the Zc±(4025). The measured mass and width of the structure are (4026.3±2.6±3.7)  MeV/c2 and (24.8±5.6±7.7)  MeV, respectively. Its production ratio σ(e+ e- → Zc±(4025)π∓ → (D* D*)± π∓)/σ(e+ e- → (D* D*)± π∓) is determined to be 0.65±0.09±0.06. The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Abstract

Using (106.41 ± 0.86) × 106 ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, we study for the first time the decay χcJ → η'K+K- (J = 1, 2), where η' → γρ0 and η' → ηπ+π-. A partial wave analysis in the covariant tensor amplitude formalism is performed for the decay χc1 → η'K+K-. Intermediate processes χc1 → η' f0 (980), χc1 → η' f0 (1710), χc1 → η' f2' (1525) and χc1 → K∗0 (1430)± K∓ (K∗0 (1430)± → η' K±) are observed with statistical significances larger than 5σ, and their branching fractions are measured.

A search for the rare decays of J/ψ → Dsρ+ + c.c. and J/ψ → D0K∗0 + c.c. is performed with a data sample of 225.3-million J/ψ events collected with the Beijing Spectrometer III detector. No evident signal is observed. Upper limits on the branching fractions are determined to be B(J/ψ → Ds ρ+ + c.c.) < 1.3 × 10-5 and B(J/ψ → D0K ∗0+ c.c.) < 2.5 × 10-6 at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract

We present a study of the infrared properties for a sample of seven spectroscopically confirmed submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) at z > 4.0. By combining ground-based near-infrared, Spitzer IRAC and MIPS, Herschel SPIRE, and ground-based submillimeter/millimeter photometry, we construct their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and a composite model to fit the SEDs. The model includes a stellar emission component at λrest < 3.5 μm, a hot dust component peaking at λrest ∼ 5 μm, and cold dust component which becomes significant for λrest > 50 μm. Six objects in the sample are detected at 250 and 350 μm. The dust temperatures for the sources in this sample are in the range of 40-80 K, and their LFIR ∼ 1013 L⊙ qualifies them as hyper-luminous infrared galaxies. The mean FIR-radio index for this sample is around 〈q〉 = 2.2 indicating no radio excess in their radio emission. Most sources in the sample have 24 μm detections corresponding to a rest-frame 4.5 μm luminosity of Log10(L4.5/L ⊙) = 11 ∼ 11.5. Their L4.5/LFIR ratios are very similar to those of starburst-dominated SMGs at z ∼ 2. The L CO-LFIR relation for this sample is consistent with that determined for local ULIRGs and SMGs at z ∼ 2. We conclude that SMGs at z > 4 are hotter and more luminous in the FIR but otherwise very similar to those at z ∼ 2. Abstract

We report a measurement of the branching fraction B(D+→μ+νμ)= [3.71±0.19(stat)±0.06(sys)]×10-4 based on 2.92fb-1 of data accumulated at s=3.773GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. This measurement, in conjunction with the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vcd| determined from a global Standard Model fit, implies a value for the weak decay constant fD+=(203.2±5.3±1.8)MeV. Additionally, using this branching fraction measurement together with a lattice QCD prediction for fD+, we find |Vcd|=0.2210±0.0058±0.0047. In either case, these are the most precise results for these quantities to date.

Abstract

We perform an analysis of the D+→ K0Sπ+π0 Dalitz plot using a data set of 2.92 fb-1 of e+e- collisions at the ψ(3770) mass accumulated by the BESIII experiment, in which 166694 candidate events are selected with a background of 15.1%. The Dalitz plot is found to be well represented by a combination of six quasitwo- body decay channels [K0Sρ+, K0Sρ(1450)+, K∗0π+, K0 (1430)0π+, K (1680)0π+, κ0π+] plus a small nonresonant component. Using the fit fractions from this analysis, partial branching ratios are updated with higher precision than previous measurements.

Abstract

We present the results of a combined galaxy population analysis for the host galaxies of active galactic nuclei (AGN) identified at 0 < z < 1.4 within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Boötes, and DEEP2 surveys. We identified AGN in a uniform and unbiased manner at X-ray, infrared, and radio wavelengths. Supermassive black holes undergoing radiatively efficient accretion (detected as X-ray and/or infrared AGN) appear to be hosted in a separate and distinct galaxy population than AGN undergoing powerful mechanically dominated accretion (radio AGN). Consistent with some previous studies, radiatively efficient AGN appear to be preferentially hosted in modest star-forming galaxies, with little dependence on AGN or galaxy luminosity. AGN exhibiting radio-emitting jets due to mechanically dominated accretion are almost exclusively observed in massive, passive galaxies. Crucially, we now provide strong evidence that the observed host-galaxy trends are independent of redshift. In particular, these different accretion-mode AGN have remained as separate galaxy populations throughout the last 9 Gyr. Furthermore, it appears that galaxies hosting AGN have evolved along the same path as galaxies that are not hosting AGN with little evidence for distinctly separate evolution. © 2014. Abstract

PurposeTo describe the theoretical rationale, intervention design, and clinical trial of a two-year weight control intervention for young adults deployed via social and mobile media.MethodsA total of 404 overweight or obese college students from three Southern California universities (M(age) = 22( ± 4) years; M(BMI) = 29( ± 2.8); 70% female) were randomized to participate in the intervention or to receive an informational web-based weight loss program. The intervention is based on behavioral theory and integrates intervention elements across multiple touch points, including Facebook, text messaging, smartphone applications, blogs, and e-mail. Participants are encouraged to seek social support among their friends, self-monitor their weight weekly, post their health behaviors on Facebook, and e-mail their weight loss questions/concerns to a health coach. The intervention is adaptive because new theory-driven and iteratively tailored intervention elements are developed and released over the course of the two-year intervention in response to patterns of use and user feedback. Measures of body mass index, waist circumference, diet, physical activity, sedentary behavior, weight management practices, smoking, alcohol, sleep, body image, self-esteem, and depression occur at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. Currently, all participants have been recruited, and all are in the final year of the trial.ConclusionTheory-driven, evidence-based strategies for physical activity, sedentary behavior, and dietary intake can be embedded in an intervention using social and mobile technologies to promote healthy weight-related behaviors in young adults.

Abstract

We report the first results from a spectroscopic survey of the [C II] 158 μm line from a sample of intermediate redshift (0.2 1011.5 L ), using the Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver-Fourier Transform Spectrometer on board the Herschel Space Observatory. This is the first survey of [C II] emission, an important tracer of star formation, at a redshift range where the star formation rate density of the universe increases rapidly. We detect strong [C II] 158 μm line emission from over 80% of the sample. We find that the [C II] line is luminous, in the range (0.8-4) × 10 -3 of the far-infrared continuum luminosity of our sources, and appears to arise from photodissociation regions on the surface of molecular clouds. The L [C II]/L IR ratio in our intermediate redshift (U)LIRGs is on average 10 times larger than that of local ULIRGs. Furthermore, we find that the L [C II]/L IR and L [C II]/L CO(1-0) ratios in our sample are similar to those of local normal galaxies and high-z star-forming galaxies. ULIRGs at z 0.5 show many similarities to the properties of local normal and high-z star-forming galaxies. Our findings strongly suggest that rapid evolution in the properties of the star-forming regions of (U)LIRGs is likely to have occurred in the last 5 billion years. © 2014. Abstract

With a sample of 225.3 × 106 J/φ events taken with the BESIII detector, the decay J/φ → γ3 (π+ π-) is analyzed. A structure at 1.84 GeV/c2 is observed in the 3(π+ π-) invariant mass spectrum with a statistical significance of 7.6σ. The mass and width are measured to be M = 1842.2 ± 4.2-2.6+7.1 MeV/c2 and Γ = 83 ± 14 ± 11 MeV. The product branching fraction is determined to be B (J/φ → γX(1840)) × B(X(1840) → 3(π+ π-)) = (2.44 ± 0.36-0.74+0.60) × 10-5. No η′ signals are observed in the 3(π+ π-) invariant mass spectrum, and the upper limit of the branching fraction for the decay η′ → 3(π+ π-) is set to be 3.1 × 10-5 at a 90% confidence level.

Abstract

Using a sample of 1.06×108 ψ(2S) events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, the decay ψ(2S)→pp̄η is studied. A partial wave analysis determines that the intermediate state N(1535) with a mass of 1524±5-4+10 MeV/c2 and a width of 130-24-10+27+57 MeV/c2 is dominant in the decay; the product branching fraction is determined to be B(ψ(2S)→N(1535)p̄)×B(N(1535)→pη)+c.c.=(5. 2±0.3-1.2+3.2)×10-5. Furthermore, the branching fraction of ψ(2S)→pp̄η is measured to be (6.4±0.2±0.6) ×10-5. Here, the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Abstract

Based on (106.41±0.86)×106 ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the branching fractions of ψ(3686)→π+π-J/ψ, J/ψ→e+e-, and J/ψ→μ+μ- are measured. We obtain B[ψ(3686)→π+π-J/ψ]=(34.98±0.02±0.45)%, B[J/ψ→e+e-]=(5.983±0.007±0.037)%, and B[J/ψ→μ+μ-]=(5.973±0.007±0.038)%. The measurement of B[ψ(3686)→π+π-J/ψ] confirms the CLEO-c measurement, and is apparently larger than the others. The measured J/ψ leptonic decay branching fractions agree with previous experiments within one standard deviation. These results lead to B[J/ψ→l+l-]=(5.978±0.005±0.040)% by averaging over the e+e- and μ+μ- channels and a ratio of B[J/ψ→e+e-]/B[J/ψ→μ+μ-]=1.0017±0.0017±0.0033, which tests e-μ universality at the four tenths of a percent level. All the measurements presented in this paper are the most precise in the world to date.

Abstract

We study the mid- to far-IR properties of a 24 ?m-selected flux-limited sample (S 24 5mJy) of 154 intermediate redshift (z ? 0.15), infrared luminous galaxies, drawn from the 5 Milli-Jansky Unbiased Spitzer Extragalactic Survey. By combining existing mid-IR spectroscopy and new Herschel SPIRE submm photometry from the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey, we derived robust total infrared luminosity (LIR) and dust mass (Mdust) estimates and infered the relative contribution of the AGN to the infrared energy budget of the sources. We found that the total (8?1000 ?m) infrared emission of galaxies with weak 6.2 ?m PAH emission (EW6.2 ? 0.2 ?m) is dominated by AGN activity, while for galaxies with EW6.2 0.2 ?m more than 50% of the LIR arises from star formation. We also found that for galaxies detected in the 250-500 ?m Herschel bands an AGN has a statistically insignificant effect on the temperature of the cold dust and the far-IR colours of the host galaxy, which are primarily shaped by star formation activity. For star-forming galaxies we reveal an anti-correlation between the LIR-to-rest-frame 8 ?m luminosity ratio, IR8 ? LIR/L8 and the strength of PAH features. We found that this anti-correlation is primarily driven by variations in the PAHs emission, and not by variations in the 5?15 ?m mid-IR continuum emission. Using the [Ne iii]/[Ne ii] line ratio as a tracer of the hardness of the radiation field, we confirm that galaxies with harder radiation fields tend to exhibit weaker PAH features, and found that they have higher IR8 values and higher dust-mass-weighted luminosities (LIR/Mdust), the latter being a proxy for the dust temperature (Td). We argue that these trends originate either from variations in the environment of the star-forming regions or are caused by variations in the age of the starburst. Finally, we provide scaling relations that will allow estimating LIR, based on single-band observations with the mid-infrared instrument, on board the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope. © ESO 2013.

Abstract

The immunodeficiency of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) disease may be due to accelerated destruction of mature CD4+ T cells and/or impaired differentiation of progenitors of CD4+ T cells. HIV-1 infection may also inhibit the production of other hematopoietic lineages, by directly or indirectly suppressing the maturation of multilineage and/or lineage-restricted hematopoietic progenitor cells. To test this hypothesis, the effects of durable viral suppression on multilineage hematopoiesis in 66 HIV-1-seropositive patients were evaluated. Administration of effective antiretroviral therapy resulted in an increase in circulating CD4+ T cell counts and statistically significant increases in circulating levels of other hematopoietic lineages, including total white blood cells, lymphocytes, polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and platelets. These results suggest that a significant lesion in untreated HIV-1 disease may lie at the level of cell production from hematopoietic progenitors.

30. An IFU View of the Active Galactic Nuclei in MaNGA Galaxy Pairs

Abstract

The role of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) during galaxy interactions and how they influence the star formation in the system are still under debate. We use a sample of 1156 galaxies in galaxy pairs or mergers (hereafter "pairs") from the MaNGA survey. This pair sample is selected by the velocity offset, projected separation, and morphology, and is further classified into four cases along the merger sequence based on morphological signatures. We then identify a total of 61 (5.5%) AGNs in pairs based on the emission-line diagnostics. No evolution of the AGN fraction is found, either along the merger sequence or compared to isolated galaxies (5.0%). We observe a higher fraction of passive galaxies in galaxy pairs, especially in the pre-merging cases, and associate the higher fraction to their environmental dependence. The isolated AGN and AGNs in pairs show similar distributions in their global stellar mass, star-formation rate (SFR), and central [O iii] surface brightness. AGNs in pairs show radial profiles of increasing specific SFR and declining Dn4000 from center to outskirts, and no significant difference from the isolated AGNs. This is clearly different from star-forming galaxies (SFGs) in our pair sample, which show enhanced central star formation, as reported before. AGNs in pairs have lower Balmer decrements at outer regions, possibly indicating less dust attenuation. Our findings suggest that AGNs are likely follow an inside-out quenching and the merger impact on the star formation in AGNs is less prominent than in SFGs.

WOS: 000389144400002, By analyzing 2.93 fb(-1) data collected at the center-of-mass energy root s = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the absolute branching fraction of the semileptonic decay D+ -> (K) over bar (0)e(+)nu(e) to be B(D (+) -> (K) over bar (0)e(+)nu(e)) = (8.59 +/- 0.14 +/- 0.21)% using (K) over bar (0) -> K-S(0) -> pi(0) pi(0), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Abstract

© 2016 Elsevier Ltd Background Few weight loss interventions are evaluated for longer than a year, and even fewer employ social and mobile technologies commonly used among young adults. We assessed the efficacy of a 2 year, theory-based, weight loss intervention that was remotely and adaptively delivered via integrated user experiences with Facebook, mobile apps, text messaging, emails, a website, and technology-mediated communication with a health coach (the SMART intervention). Methods In this parallel-group, randomised, controlled trial, we enrolled overweight or obese college students (aged 18–35 years) from three universities in San Diego, CA, USA. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive either the intervention (SMART intervention group) or general information about health and wellness (control group). We used computer-based permuted-block randomisation with block sizes of four, stratified by sex, ethnicity, and college. Participants, study staff, and investigators were masked until the intervention was assigned. The primary outcome was objectively measured weight in kg at 24 months. Differences between groups were evaluated using linear mixed-effects regression within an intention-to-treat framework. Objectively measured weight at 6, 12, and 18 months was included as a secondary outcome. The trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01200459. Findings Between May 18, 2011, and May 17, 2012, 404 individuals were randomly assigned to the intervention (n=202) or control (n=202). Participants' mean (SD) age was 22·7 (3·8) years. 284 (70%) participants were female and 125 (31%) were Hispanic. Mean (SD) body-mass index at baseline was 29·0 (2·8) kg/m2. At 24 months, weight was assessed in 341 (84%) participants, but all 404 were included in analyses. Weight, adjusted for sex, ethnicity, and college, was not significantly different between the groups at 24 months (−0·79 kg [95% CI −2·02 to 0·43], p=0·204). However, weight was significantly less in the intervention group compared with the control group at 6 months (−1·33 kg [95% CI −2·36 to −0·30], p=0·011) and 12 months (−1·33 kg [–2·30 to −0·35], p=0·008), but not 18 months (−0·67 kg [95% CI −1·69 to 0·35], p=0·200). One serious adverse event in the intervention group (gallstones) could be attributable to rapid and excessive weight loss. Interpretation Social and mobile technologies did not facilitate sustained reductions in weight among young adults, although these approaches might facilitate limited short-term weight loss. Abstract

WOS: 000368783600015, By analyzing a data set of 2.92 fb(-1) of e(+) e(-) collision data taken at root s = 3.773 GeVand 106.41 x 10(6) psi(3686) decays taken at root s = 3.686 GeVwith the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the branching fraction and the partial decay width for psi(3770)->gamma chi c0 to be B(psi(3770)->gamma chi c0) = (6.88 +/- 0.28 +/- 0.67) x 10(-3) and Gamma[psi(3770)->gamma chi c0] = (187 +/- 8 +/- 19) keV, respectively. Abstract

WOS: 000368783600087, We extract the e(+) e(-) -> pi(+) pi(-) cross section in the energy range between 600 and 900 MeV, exploiting the method of initial state radiation. A data set with an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb(-1) taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider is used. The cross section is measured with a systematic uncertainty of 0.9%. We extract the pion form factor vertical bar F pi vertical bar(2) as well as the contribution of the measured cross section to the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to (g - 2)(mu). We find this value to be a(mu)(pi pi,LO) (600-900 MeV) = (368.2 +/- 2.5(stat)+/- 3.3(sys)).10(-10), which is between the corresponding values using the BaBar or KLOE data. (C) 2015 The Authors. Abstract

Genome-wide association studies in several ethnic groups have reported that polymorphisms of the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) and cleft lip and palate transmembrane 1-like (CLPTM1L) genes, located on 5p15.33, are associated with susceptibility to lung cancer. However, whether genetic variants of TERT-CLPTM1L are associated with an increased risk of lung cancer in the Chinese Han population is unknown. This study examined associations between five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of TERT-CLPTM1L (rs402710, rs401681, rs465498, rs4975616, and rs2736100) and lung cancer in a Chinese Han population in the Hubei Province. The five SNPs were detected using the Sequenom MassArray(®) iPLEX System in 304 lung cancer patients and 319 controls. Of the five SNPs, rs4975616 did not conform to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in the controls. Only rs2736100 was significantly (P = 0.034) associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. In the linkage disequilibrium analyses, a block of strong linkage disequilibrium was observed between rs401681 and rs465498 (D' = 0.986; r(2) = 0.546). No linkage disequilibrium between rs2736100 and the other three SNPs was found. In the haplotype analyses, the frequencies of the TTCT haplotype in rs402710, rs401681, rs465498, and rs2736100 differed significantly between case and control subjects (odds ratio = 0.56; 95% confidence interval, 0.36-0.88; P = 0.012). The results of this study suggested that rs2736100 on TERT-CLPTM1L indicates a poor prognosis for lung cancer in the Chinese Han population.

Abstract

We present a study of the infrared properties for a sample of seven spectroscopically confirmed submillimeter galaxies at $z>$4.0. By combining ground-based near-infrared, Spitzer IRAC and MIPS, Herschel SPIRE, and ground-based submillimeter/millimeter photometry, we construct their Spectral Energy Distributions (SED) and a composite model to fit the SEDs. The model includes a stellar emission component at $��_{\rm rest} $ 50$\,��$m. Six objects in the sample are detected at 250 and 350$ ��$m. The dust temperatures for the sources in this sample are in the range of 40$-$80 K, and their $L_{\rm FIR}$ $\sim$ 10$^{13}$ L$_{\odot}$ qualifies them as Hyper$-$Luminous Infrared Galaxies (HyperLIRGs). The mean FIR-radio index for this sample is around $< q > = 2.2$ indicating no radio excess in their radio emission. Most sources in the sample have 24$ ��$m detections corresponding to a rest-frame 4.5$ ��$m luminosity of Log$_{10}$(L$_{4.5}$ / L$_{\odot}$) = 11 $\sim$ 11.5. Their L$_{\rm 4.5}$/$L_{\rm FIR}$ ratios are very similar to those of starburst dominated submillimeter galaxies at $z \sim$ 2. The $L_{\rm CO}-L_{\rm FIR}$ relation for this sample is consistent with that determined for local ULIRGs and SMGs at $z \sim$ 2. We conclude that submillimeter galaxies at $z >$ 4 are hotter and more luminous in the FIR, but otherwise very similar to those at $z \sim$ 2. None of these sources show any sign of the strong QSO phase being triggered., 49 pages, 15 figures. Submitted to ApJ

Abstract

The process psi(3686) -> pi(0)h(c), h(c) -> gamma eta(c) has been studied with a data sample of 106 +/- 4 million Psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The mass and width of the P-wave charmonium spin-singlet state h(c)(P-1(1)) are determined by simultaneously fitting distributions of the pi(0) recoil mass for 16 exclusive eta(c) decay modes. The results, M(h(c)) 3525.31 +/- 0.11(stat) +/- 0.14(syst) MeV/c(2) and Gamma(h(c)) = 0.70 +/- 0.28 +/- 0.22 MeV, are consistent with and more precise than previous measurements. We also determine the branching ratios for the 16 exclusive eta(c) decay modes, five of which have not been measured previously. New measurements of the eta(c) line- shape parameters in the E1 transition h(c) -> gamma eta(c) are made by selecting candidates in the h(c) signal sample and simultaneously fitting the hadronic mass spectra for the 16 eta(c) decay channels. The resulting eta(c) mass and width values are M(eta(c)) = 2984.49 +/- 1.16 +/- 0.52 MeV/c(2) and Gamma(eta(c)) 36.4 +/- 3.2 +/- 1.7 MeV. Abstract

A turbulent flow lacking homogeneity and isotropy has been studied using the technique of photoncorrelation homodyne spectroscopy to measure velocity differences in different directions and at various length scales. The measured intensity correlation function G(qt, L) is found to be of the scaling form G(qtu(L) ) with u (L)- L ~, where u (L) is the characteristic turbulent velocity at the length scale L and q is the scattering vector. The exponent g varies with scattering geometries and with flow cells. The scaling behavior of G(qt, L) is found to be independent of spatial positions and orientations. A scaling G(qtu(L)) indicates that the velocity-density function P( V, R) has a scaling form Q( V/u(R))/u(R). The experiment suggests that the scaling argument can still be used to describe anisotropic and inhomogeneous turbulent flows, and that the exact functional form of P(V, R) (which is of scaling form) may vary with spatial positions and orientations in turbulent flows, reflecting the inhomogeneity and anisotropy of the turbulence.

Abstract

This paper describes the Hubble Space Telescope imaging data products and data reduction procedures for the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). This survey is designed to document the evolution of galaxies and black holes at z ≈ 1.5-8, and to study Type Ia supernovae at z > 1.5. Five premier multi-wavelength sky regions are selected, each with extensive multi-wavelength observations. The primary CANDELS data consist of imaging obtained in the Wide Field Camera 3 infrared channel (WFC3/IR) and the WFC3 ultraviolet/optical channel, along with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). The CANDELS/Deep survey covers ∼ 125 arcmin 2 within GOODS-N and GOODS-S, while the remainder consists of the CANDELS/Wide survey, achieving a total of ∼ 800 arcmin2 across GOODS and three additional fields (Extended Groth Strip, COSMOS, and Ultra-Deep Survey). We summarize the observational aspects of the survey as motivated by the scientific goals and present a detailed description of the data reduction procedures and products from the survey. Our data reduction methods utilize the most up-to-date calibration files and image combination procedures. We have paid special attention to correcting a range of instrumental effects, including charge transfer efficiency degradation for ACS, removal of electronic bias-striping present in ACS data after Servicing Mission 4, and persistence effects and other artifacts in WFC3/IR. For each field, we release mosaics for individual epochs and eventual mosaics containing data from all epochs combined, to facilitate photometric variability studies and the deepest possible photometry. A more detailed overview of the science goals and observational design of the survey are presented in a companion paper.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate in detail the oral complications of leukemia at initial presentation. Associations between oral manifestations and laboratory data were also investigated. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study of 230 cases was conducted to investigate the nature and incidence of oral manifestations at initial presentation. The following data were determined for each patient: age, sex, haemogram at diagnosis (which included haemoglobin, red blood cell counts, differential white blood cell counts, platelet counts), classification of the type of leukemia's systemic symptoms and oral manifestations at the initial physical examination including the dental consultation. RESULTS: It was revealed that the type of leukemia diagnosed, except with CML, is related to the age prediliction of patients. The incidence of leukemia is higher in males than in females. The most common manifestations of leukemia are lymphadenopathy (71.4% in ALL; 45% in AML), laryngeal pain (52.7% in ALL; 37.3% in AML), gingival bleeding (43.2% in AML; 28.6% in ALL), oral ulceration, and gingival enlargement. Fever (92.2%) was the most common symptom in patients with all types of leukemia. Platelet counts from 25000 mm-3 to 60000 mm-3 are at sufficiently low levels to result in spontaneous bleeding. Most of the patients had WBC counts of greater than 10000 mm-3.Only 12.6% of patients had normal WBC counts. CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that the age predilic-tion and prevalence of oral manifestations are closely related to the type of leukemia.

P-Halogenated dioxoruthenium(vi) porphyrin complexes [Ru-VI(F-28-tPP)O-2] [F-28-tPP = 2,3,7,8,12,13, 17,18-octafluoro-5,10,15,20-tetrakis-(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrinato(2-) I and [Ru-VI(beta-Br-8-tmp)O-2] [beta-Br-8-tmp = 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octabromo-5,10,15,20- tetrakis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)porphyr- inato(2-)] were prepared from reactions of [Ru-II(por)(CO)] [por=porphyrinato(2-)] with ni-chloroperoxybenzoic acid in CH2Cl2. Reactions of [Ru-VI(por)O-2] with excess PPh3 in CH2Cl2 gave [Ru-VI(F-20-tpp)(PPh3)(2)] [F-20-tPP = 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrinato(2-)] and [Ru-VI(F-28-tpp)(PPh3)(2)]. The structures of [Ru-VI(por)(CO)(H2O)] and [Ru-VI(por)(PPh3)(2)] (por=F-20-tpp, F-28-tpp) were determined by X-ray crystallography, revealing the effect of P-fluorination of the porphyrin ligand on the coordination of axial ligands to ruthenium atom. The X-ray crystal structure of [Ru-VI(F-20-tPP)O-2] shows a Ru=O bond length of 1.718(3) A. Electrochemical reduction of [Ru-VI(por)O-2] (Ru-VI to Ru-V) is irreversible or quasi-reversible, with the E-p.c(Ru-VI/V) spanning -0.31 to -1.15 V versus Cp2Fe+/0. Kinetic studies were performed for the reactions of various [Ru-VI(por)O-2], including [Ru-VI(F-28-tPP)O-2] and [Ru-VI(beta-Br-8-tmp)O-2], with para-substituted styrenes p-X-C6H4CH=CH2 (X = H, F, Cl, Me, MeO), Cis- and trans-P-in ethylstyrene, cyclohexene, norbornene, ethylbenzene, cumene, 9,10-dihydroanthracene, xanthene, and fluorene. ne second-order rate constants (k(2)) obtained for the hydrocarbon oxidations by [Ru-VI-(F-28-tpp)O-2] are up to 28-fold larger than by [Ru-VI(F-20-tpp)O-2]. Dual-parameter Hammett correlation implies that the styrene oxidation by [Ru-VI(F-28-tpp)O-2] should involve rate-limiting generation of a benzylic radical intermediate, and the spin delocalization effect is more important than the polar effect. 50. Abnormal energy dependence of photoluminescence decay time in InGaN epilayer

Abstract

We employ photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL to study exciton localization effect in InGaN epilayers. By measuring the exciton decay time as a, function of the monitored emission energy at different temperatures, we have found unusual behaviour of the energy dependence in the PL decay process. At low temperature, the measured PL decay time increases with the emission energy. It decreases with the emission energy at 200K, and remains nearly constant at the intermediate temperature of 120K. We have studied the dot size effect on the radiative recombination time by calculating the temperature dependence of the exciton recombination lifetime in quantum dots, and have found that the observed behaviour can be well correlated to the exciton localization in quantum dots. This suggestion is further supported by steady state PL results.
