Background: Increasing evidence has demonstrated that N6-methyladenosine (m 6 A) RNA modification plays an essential role in a wide range of pathological conditions. Impaired autophagy is a critical hallmark of acute pancreatitis (AP)., Aim: To explore the role of the m 6 A modification of ZKSCAN3 in the regulation of autophagy in AP., Methods: The AP mouse cell model was established by cerulein-treated mouse pancreatic acinar cells (MPC-83), and the results were confirmed by the levels of amylase and inflammatory factors. Autophagy activity was evaluated by specific identification of the autophagy-related microstructure and the expression of autophagy-related genes. ZKSCAN3 and ALKBH5 were knocked down to study the function in AP. A m 6 A RNA binding protein immunoprecipitation assay was used to study how the m6A modification of ZKSCAN3 mRNA is regulated by ALKBH ., Results: The increased expression of amylase and inflammatory factors in the supernatant and the accumulation of autophagic vacuoles verified that the AP mouse cell model was established. The downregulation of LAMP2 and upregulation of LC3-II/I and SQSTM1 demonstrated that autophagy was impaired in AP. The expression of ZKSCAN3 was upregulated in AP. Inhibition of ZKSCAN3 increased the expression of LAMP2 and decreased the expression of the inflammatory factors, LC3-II/I and SQSTM1 . Furthermore, ALKBH5 was upregulated in AP. Knockdown of ALKBH5 downregulated ZKSCAN3 expression and restored decreased autophagic flux in AP. Notably, the bioinformatic analysis revealed 23 potential m 6 A modification sites on ZKSCAN3 mRNA. The m 6 A modification of ZKSCAN3 mRNA was significantly decreased in AP. Knockdown of ALKBH5 increased the modification of ZKSCAN3 mRNA, which confirmed that ALKBH5 upregulated ZKSCAN3 expression in a m 6 A-dependent manner., Conclusion: ALKBH5 inhibits autophagic flux through m 6 A demethylation of ZKSCAN3 mRNA in AP, thereby aggravating the severity of the disease., Competing Interests: Conflict-of-interest statement: The authors declare that they have no conflicts of interest., (©The Author(s) 2024. Background: The nuclear cap-binding complex (CBC)-dependent translation (CT) is an important initial translation pathway for 5'-cap-dependent translation in normal mammal cells. Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4A-III (eIF4A3), as an RNA helicase, is recruited to CT complex and enhances CT efficiency through participating in unwinding of secondary structure in the 5' UTR. However, the detailed mechanism for eIF4A3 implicated in unwinding of secondary structure in the 5' UTR in normal mammal cells is still unclear. Specially, we need to investigate whether the kind of mechanism in normal mammal cells extrapolates to cancer cells, e.g. ESCC, and further interrogate whether and how the mechanism triggers malignant phenotype of ESCC, which are important for identifying a potential therapeutic target for patients with ESCC. Methods: Bioinformatics analysis, RNA immunoprecipitation and RNA pulldown assays were performed to detect the interaction of circular RNA circ-231 with eIF4A3. In vitro and in vivo assays were performed to detect biological roles of circ-231 in ESCC. RNA immunoprecipitation, RNA pulldown, mass spectrometry analysis and co-immunoprecipitation assays were used to measure the interaction of circ-231, eIF4A3 and STAU1 in HEK293T and ESCC. In vitro EGFP reporter and 5' UTR of mRNA pulldown assays were performed to probe for the binding of circ-231, eIF4A3 and STAU1 to secondary structure of 5' UTR. Results: RNA immunoprecipitation assays showed that circ-231 interacted with eIF4A3 in HEK293T and ESCC. Further study confirmed that circ-231 orchestrated with eIF4A3 to control protein expression of TPI1 and PRDX6, but not for mRNA transcripts. The in-depth mechanism study uncovered that both circ-231 and eIF4A3 were involved in unwinding of secondary structure in 5' UTR of TPI1 and PRDX6. More importantly, circ-231 promoted the interaction between eIF4A3 and STAU1. Intriguingly, both circ-231 and eIF4A3 were dependent on STAU1 binding to secondary structure in 5' UTR. Biological function assays revealed that circ-231 promoted the migration and proliferation of ESCC via TPI1 and PRDX6. In ESCC, the up-regulated expression of circ-231 was observed and patients with ESCC characterized by higher expression of circ-231 have concurrent lymph node metastasis, compared with control. Conclusions: Our data unravels the detailed mechanism by which STAU1 binds to secondary structure in 5' UTR of mRNAs and recruits eIF4A3 through interacting with circ-231 and thereby eIF4A3 is implicated in unwinding of secondary structure, which is common to HEK293T and ESCC. However, importantly, our data reveals that circ-231 promotes migration and proliferation of ESCC and the up-regulated circ-231 greatly correlates with tumor lymph node metastasis, insinuating that circ-231 could be a therapeutic target and an indicator of risk of lymph node metastasis for patients with ESCC., Competing Interests: Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interest exists., (© The author(s).)

Background and Aims: Dementia imposes a heavy burden on society and families, therefore, effective drug treatments, exploring and preventing factors associated with dementia, are paramount. To provide reference points for the best frequency of physical exercise (physical exercise), we investigated the association between frequency of PE and cognition in Chinese old adults., Methods: 16,181 Chinese participants aged 65 years or older were included in this study. Associations between PE and cognition were estimated multivariate logistic and linear regression analyses. Associations were further investigated across dementia subtypes (Alzheimer dementia, vascular dementia, and other types of dementia). Subgroup analyses were performed in different age groups, in populations with and without stroke, and those with and without hypertension., Results: PE associated with dementia after adjusting for full covariates (OR: 0.5414, 95% CI: 0.4536-0.6491, p  < 0.001). Exercise performed at ≥3 times/week associated with lower risk of dementia (OR: 0.4794-0.6619, all p value <0.001). PE was associated with improved cognition ( β : 12851, p  < 0.001), and any PE frequency contributed to cognitive improvement ( p values for exercise performed ≥1 time/week were <0.001). Similar conclusions were identified when we repeated analyses in different dementia subtypes and age groups. Subgroup analyses suggested that the cognition of individuals without hypertension also benefitted from exercising 1-2 times/week (OR: 0.6168, 95% CI: 0.4379-0.8668, p  = 0.005)., Conclusion: The best exercise frequency is exercising ≥3 times/week for individuals from different dementia subtypes and age groups. Objectives: The skeletal muscle mass index and skeletal muscle radiodensity have promise as specific diagnostic indicators for muscle quality. However, the difficulties in measuring low skeletal muscle mass index and low skeletal muscle radiodensity limit their use in routine clinical practice, impeding early screening and diagnosis. The objective of this study is to develop a nomogram that incorporates preoperative factors for predicting low skeletal muscle mass index and low skeletal muscle radiodensity., Methods: A total of 1692 colorectal cancer patients between 2015 and 2021 were included. The patients were randomly divided into a training cohort (n = 1353) and a validation cohort (n = 339). Nomogram models were calibrated using the area under the curve, calibration curves, and the Hosmer-Lemeshow test to assess their predictive ability. Finally, a decision curve was applied to assess the clinical usefulness., Results: In a prediction model for low skeletal muscle mass index, age, body mass index, and grip strength were incorporated as variables. For low skeletal muscle radiodensity, age, sex, body mass index, serum hemoglobin level, and grip strength were included as predictors. In the training cohort, the area under the curve value for low skeletal muscle mass index was 0.750 (95% CI, 0.726-0.773), whereas for low skeletal muscle radiodensity, it was 0.763 (95% CI, 0.739-0.785). The Hosmer-Lemeshow test confirmed that both models fit well in both cohorts. Decision curve analysis was applied to assess the clinical usefulness of the model., Conclusions: The incorporation of preoperative factors into the nomogram-based prediction model represents a significant advancement in the muscle quality assessment. In this study, a graphene electrochemical sensor based on laser graphene polymer material was proposed to induce graphene formation on polyimide substrates via fiber laser. The laser produces stable power and results to achieve the benefits of consistency, conductivity, and flexibility. The electrochemical three-electrodes were manufactured on polyimide to replace the traditional three-electrodes by achieving small size and portability. An electrode activation is the modification of laser-scribed graphene electrodes (LSG) to facilitate the binding of liver cancer sites. The evaluation is performed by differential pulse Voltammetry (DPV) to detect cancer proteins in the phosphate buffer saline (PBS) buffer and serum. In a serum environment, the concentrations of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) were detected from 0.75 ng ml -1 to 100 ng ml -1 , AFP and CEA electrodes have a good linear range (R 2  = 0.96 and R 2  = 0.98), indicating the sensor's sensitivity and specificity for cancer detection. In addition, two types of carcinogenic proteins were monitored in the PBS and successfully detected in this experiment. Based on the results, the appropriate LSG sensor may be used for monitoring with limited resources. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy have improved the 5-year survival rate of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients, but the side effects generally lead to unsatisfactory clinical efficacy. It's imperative to explore the pathogenesis of NPC to find better diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Small nucleolar RNA host genes (SNHGs) are special lncRNAs, which can be further spliced to produce small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs). SNHG1 has been found to be associated with various cancers. However, only a few studies reported the relationship between SNHG1 and NPC. This study first analyzed the diagnostic performance and related signaling pathways of SNHG1 in NPC through bioinformatics. The expression of SNHG1 was verified by RT-qPCR, and the expression of the signaling pathway was detected using immunohistochemistry. Bioinformatics analysis results showed that SNHG1 was significantly overexpressed in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC) and NPC tissues. RT-qPCR detection confirmed the significant overexpression of SNHG1 in NPC tissues. Enrichment analysis showed that SNHG1 may act on NPC through the PI3K-AKT signaling pathway. Immunohistochemistry experiment revealed PI3K-AKT signaling pathway proteins (PI3K AKT and EGFR) positively expressed and CASP3 weakly positively expressed in NPC tissues. Therefore, we concluded that SNHG1 is a prospective biomarker and may act on NPC through the PI3K-AKT signaling pathway.

The choice between radiotherapy (RT) and CO 2 laser surgery (CO 2 -LS) for early glottic cancer remains controversial. We systematically examined electronic databases in order to identify prospective trials comparing patients who had undergone CO 2 -LS or RT to treat early glottic cancer. Eleven studies involving 1053 patients were included. In the selected literature, the parameter setting of CO 2 laser equipment can be summarized as wavelength 10.6 µm, superpulsed mode, continuous setting, power tailored on target structures (1-3 W for subtle resections and 4-15 W for cutting a larger tumor), and approximately 2080-3900 W/cm 2 of laser energy. Using RevMan 5.3, we estimated pooled odds ratios (ORs) for dichotomous variables and pooled mean differences (MDs) for continuous variables, along with associated 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The heterogeneity in the treatment variables was measured using Higgins' inconsistency test and expressed as I 2 values. The continuous variables were then depicted as histograms developed using PlotDigitizer 2.6.8. Compared to patients treated with CO 2 -LS, those treated with RT had better jitter (MD 1.27%, 95% CI 1.21 ~ 1.32, P < 0.001), and high scores on the "Grade (MD 6.54, 95% CI 5.31 ~ 7.76, P < 0.001), Breathiness (MD 9.08, 95% CI 4.02 ~ 14.13, P < 0.001), Asthenia (MD 2.13, 95% CI 0.29 ~ 3.98, P = 0.02), and Strain (MD 3.32, 95% CI 0.57 ~ 6.07, P = 0.02)" scale. Patients treated with CO 2 -LS had worse local control rates (OR 3.14, 95% CI 1.52 ~ 6.48, P = 0.002) while lower incidence of second primary tumor (OR 0.30, 95% CI 0.15 ~ 0.61, P < 0.001). GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) have attracted widespread attention for high-power microwave applications, owing to their superior properties. However, the charge trapping effect has limitations to its performance. To study the trapping effect on the device large-signal behavior, AlGaN/GaN HEMTs and metal-insulator-semiconductor HEMTs (MIS-HEMTs) were characterized through X-parameter measurements under ultraviolet (UV) illumination. For HEMTs without passivation, the magnitude of the large-signal output wave (X21FB) and small-signal forward gain (X2111S) at fundamental frequency increased, whereas the large-signal second harmonic output wave (X22FB) decreased when the device was exposed to UV light, resulting from the photoconductive effect and suppression of buffer-related trapping. For MIS-HEMTs with SiN passivation, much higher X21FB and X2111S have been obtained compared with HEMTs. It suggests that better RF power performance can be achieved by removing the surface state. Moreover, the X-parameters of the MIS-HEMT are less dependent on UV light, since the light-induced performance enhancement is offset by excess traps in the SiN layer excited by UV light. The radio frequency (RF) power parameters and signal waveforms were further obtained based on the X-parameter model. The variation of RF current gain and distortion with light was consistent with the measurement results of X-parameters. Therefore, the trap number in the AlGaN surface, GaN buffer, and SiN layer must be minimized for a good large-signal performance of AlGaN/GaN transistors.

Pyroptosis or cellular inflammatory necrosis is a programmed cell death kind. Accumulating evidence shows that pyroptosis plays a crucial role in the invasion, metastasis, and proliferation of tumor cells, thus affecting the prognosis of tumors and therapeutic effects. Prostate cancer (PCa), a common malignancy among men, is associated with inflammation. Pathophysiological effects of pyroptosis on tumor development and progression, as well as the mediation of PCa, are known, but its effects on the potential prognosis for PCa warrant in-depth investigation. Herein, we built a risk model of six pyroptosis-related genes and verified their predictive abilities for prognostic and therapeutic effects. Higher risk scores indicated a higher probability of biochemical recurrence (BCR), higher immune infiltration, and worsened clinicopathological features. To derive scientific and reliable predictions for BCR in patients having PCa, the findings of the current study were verified in the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) cohort following evaluation in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) dataset. Additionally, after evaluating the six genes in the model, ZDHHC1 was found to be an important component. Its antitumor role was further assessed through in vivo and in vitro experiments, and its promoting effect on pyroptosis was further evaluated and verified. The commonly used metal thin film or resin-based flexible composites cannot meet the requirement of cryogenic flexible conductive functional devices, which may be used in space exploration, biomedicine, and other science and technology fields facing a very low temperature environment, because of their poor fatigue and anti-bending properties at cryogenic temperature. In this work, a composite based on functionalized cotton fibers is proposed to achieve the application requirement of flexible electrical systems at cryogenic temperature. A conductive composite film with optimized strength and flexibility was obtained by controlling the size distribution of cotton fibers and adjusting the interaction force among the cotton fibers. The obtained composite film could endure over 10,000 times of bending at 77 K (-196 °C), with the resistance changing less than ±5%, indicating its excellent mechanical flexibility and electrical stability at cryogenic temperature. Finally, a demonstration was successfully conducted by applying the composite film as a flexible electrical connection to a robot arm, which worked at 77 K. This work might be a reference significance for the application of flexible conductors from room temperature to cryogenic temperature.

The analysis of pharmaceutical active ingredients plays an important role in quality control and clinical trials because they have a significant physiological effect on the human body even at low concentrations. Herein, a flexible three-electrode system using laser-scribed graphene (LSG) technology, which consists of Nafion/Fe 3 O 4 nanohybrids immobilized on LSG as the working electrode and LSG counter and reference electrodes on a single polyimide film, is presented. A Nafion/Fe 3 O 4 /LSG electrode is constructed by drop coating a solution of Nafion/Fe 3 O 4 , which is electrostatically self-assembled between positively charged Fe 3 O 4 and negatively charged Nafion on the LSG electrode and is used for the first time to determine a neurotoxicity drug (clioquinol; CQL) in biological samples. Owing to their porous 3D structure, an enriched surface area at the active edges and polar groups (OH, COOH, and -SO 3 H) in Nafion/Fe 3 O 4 /LSG electrodes resulted in excellent wettability to facilitate electrolyte diffusion, which gave ∼twofold enhancement in electrocatalytic activity over LSG electrodes. The experimental parameters affecting the analytical performance were investigated. The quantification of clioquinol on the Nafion/Fe 3 O 4 /LSG electrode surface was examined using differential pulse voltammetry and chronoamperometry techniques. The fabricated sensor displays preferable sensitivity (17.4 μA μM -1 cm -2 ), a wide linear range (1 nM to 100 μM), a very low detection limit (0.73 nM), and acceptable selectivity toward quantitative analysis of CQL. The tumor microenvironment is a highly complex ecosystem of diverse cell types, which shape cancer biology and impact the responsiveness to therapy. Here, we analyze the microenvironment of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) using single-cell transcriptome sequencing in 62,161 cells from blood, adjacent nonmalignant and matched tumor samples from 11 ESCC patients. We uncover heterogeneity in most cell types of the ESCC stroma, particularly in the fibroblast and immune cell compartments. We identify a tumor-specific subset of CST1 + myofibroblasts with prognostic values and potential biological significance. CST1 + myofibroblasts are also highly tumor-specific in other cancer types. Additionally, a subset of antigen-presenting fibroblasts is revealed and validated. Analyses of myeloid and T lymphoid lineages highlight the immunosuppressive nature of the ESCC microenvironment, and identify cancer-specific expression of immune checkpoint inhibitors. Objective: To establish the norm of the Chinese version of Karitane Parenting Confidence Scale (KPCS) in urban areas of China. Methods: From August to December 2017, the parents of 2 216 children (<36 months old) were selected from 15 cities (Beijing, Lianyungang, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an, Guangzhou, Changsha, Jinan, Guiyang, Ningbo, Dalian, Qinhuangdao, Maanshan, Chongqing and Wuhan) in 14 provinces by stratified random sampling. The general demographic characteristics and parents' parenting confidence were collected by a self-made questionnaire and KPCS Chinese version. The percentile norm was established. P 3 , P 10 and P 25 were used as the criteria to define the degree of lack of parenting confidence. Results: The age of mothers was (30.67±4.29). The age of the father was (32.50±4.99) years old. There were 726 (32.76%), 759 (34.25%) and 731 (32.99%) infants in 6-12, 12-23 and 24-35 months old groups. The total scores of P 50 , P 25 , P 10 and P 3 of KPCS (Chinese version) of infant parents in urban areas in China were 41, 38, 33, and 29 respectively. When the scores of parents were 34-37, 30-33, and ≤ 29, they were judged as mild, moderate, and severe lack of parenting confidence. There was no significant difference in the Chinese version of KPCS between parents of different age groups and parents of different gender (χ²=3.53, P =0.171; χ²=1.41, P =0.236). Each factor score≤ P 3 is defined as the boundary score, and the corresponding boundary scores of "parenting" "support" and "competence" were 13, 9, and 5 respectively. Conclusion: The Chinese version of KPCS can be used to assess the parenting confidence of infants in urban areas of China. It can used as one of the bases for scientific and objective evaluation of the parenting status of families.

Objective: To analyze the prevalence and associated factors of malnutrition among children under 6 years of age in Hunan province. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study. A combination of multistage stratified cluster sampling and systematic sampling approach was used to recruit 10 442 children aged 0-71 months from 144 communities (villages) across 48 streets(towns) in 24 districts(counties) from Hunan province between August and November 2019. Data concerning the children and their mothers, caregivers, and family conditions was collected using unified questionnaire, with the lengths/heights and weights of the children being measured using unified instruments. The length/height for age, weight for age, weight for length/height, and body mass index for age Z scores were calculated and used to evaluate the prevalence of children's stunting, underweight, and wasting. The chi-square test was used to compare the prevalence of malnutrition among children with different characteristics. The multivariate Logistic regression model was used to conduct multivariate analysis for childrens' malnutrition. Results: The prevalence of protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) among children under 6 years of age was 6.8% (710/10 442), and the prevalence of stunting, underweight, and wasting were 3.1% (328/10 442), 2.7% (280/10 442), and 3.3% (343/10 442), respectively. Rural areas ( OR =1.60), older age of children (compared with children of 0-11 months, the OR for 12-23, 24-35, 36-47, 48-59, and 60-71 months were 1.42, 1.75, 1.55, 1.70, and 1.88, respectively), low birth weight ( OR =2.72), caregivers of minority ethnicity ( OR =1.95), and large family size ( OR =1.25) were risk factors for children's PEM. Rural areas and low birth weight were risk factors for stunting in children ( OR =2.13 and 3.28). Rural areas, low birth weight, caregivers of minority ethnicity, and large family size were risk factors for underweight in children ( OR =2.57, 3.34, 1.86, and 1.32). Rural areas ( OR =1.43), older age of children (compared with children of 0-11 months, the OR for 24-35, 36-47, 48-59, and 60-71 months were 1.63, 1.80, 1.84 and 2.17, respectively), low birth weight ( OR =2.36), caregivers of minority ethnicity ( OR =2.88), and large family size ( OR =1.42) were risk factors for children's wasting. Higher education level of caregivers was a common protective factor for PEM, stunting, and underweight ( OR =0.85, 0.76, and 0.82). Conclusions: The prevalence of stunting, underweight, and wasting among children under 6 years of age in Hunan province were all at a low level. Nevertheless, the urban-rural differences still existed, with these prevalence being affected by children age, birth weight, ethnicity of caregivers, education level, and family size.

Squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) comprise one of the most common histologic types of human cancer. Transcriptional dysregulation of SCC cells is orchestrated by tumor protein p63 (TP63), a master transcription factor (TF) and a well-researched SCC-specific oncogene. In the present study, both Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) of SCC patient samples and in vitro loss-of-function assays establish fatty-acid metabolism as a key pathway downstream of TP63. Further studies identify sterol regulatory element binding transcription factor 1 (SREBF1) as a central mediator linking TP63 with fatty-acid metabolism, which regulates the biosynthesis of fatty-acids, sphingolipids (SL), and glycerophospholipids (GPL), as revealed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)-based lipidomics. Moreover, a feedback co-regulatory loop consisting of SREBF1/TP63/Kruppel like factor 5 (KLF5) is identified, which promotes overexpression of all three TFs in SCCs. Downstream of SREBF1, a non-canonical, SCC-specific function is elucidated: SREBF1 cooperates with TP63/KLF5 to regulate hundreds of cis-regulatory elements across the SCC epigenome, which converge on activating cancer-promoting pathways. Indeed, SREBF1 is essential for SCC viability and migration, and its overexpression is associated with poor survival in SCC patients. Taken together, these data shed light on mechanisms of transcriptional dysregulation in cancer, identify specific epigenetic regulators of lipid metabolism, and uncover SREBF1 as a potential therapeutic target and prognostic marker in SCC., (© 2021. Evidence shows that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) modulate mRNAs of multiple genes by post-transcriptional regulation. However, in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, lncRNAs involvement in post-transcriptional regulation of mRNAs have been rarely reported. In this study, we investigated a novel mechanism of linc01305 promoting metastasis and proliferation of ESCC. The results for real-time quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) and fluorescence in situ hybridization showed that linc01305 was highly expressed and predominantly located in cytoplasm of human esophageal cancer cells. Transwell and colony formation assays confirmed that linc01305 promoted migration and proliferation of esophageal cancer cells. RNA-seq, linc01305 pulldown, mass spectrometry, RNA immunoprecipitation and mRNA stability assays demonstrated that linc01305 stabilized mRNA of target gene HTR3A through interacting with IGF2BP2 and IGF2BP3. Taken together, our data unveils a novel mechanism in which cytoplasmic linc01305 stabilizes HTR3A mRNA through interacting with IGF2BP2 and IGF2BP3 and thereby promotes metastasis and proliferation of ESCC., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. Purpose: This study aimed to explore effects of maternal folic acid (FA) supplementation during pregnancy on neurodevelopment in 1-month-old infants and to determine whether effects may be related to maternal circulating inflammatory cytokine concentrations., Methods: This birth cohort study recruited 1186 mother-infant pairs in Tianjin, China, between July 2015 and July 2017. The women completed interviewer-administered questionnaires on their lifestyles and FA supplementation during pregnancy. Neurodevelopment was assessed in 1-month-old infants using a standard neuropsychological examination table. In 192 women, serum homocysteine (Hcy) and inflammatory cytokine concentrations were measured at 16-18 weeks of gestation., Results: The infants whose mothers took FA supplements during pregnancy had a significantly higher development quotient (DQ) compared with those whose mothers were non-users (P < 0.05). After adjustment for maternal characteristics, supplementary FA use for 1-3 months, 3-6 months, and > 6 months were associated with the increases of 7.7, 11.0, and 7.4 units in the scale of infant DQ score compared with women reporting no supplement use, respectively (P < 0.05). FA supplementation was associated with a decreased serum concentration of Hcy (β = [Formula: see text] 0.19), which was correlated with women's serum inflammatory cytokine concentrations at 16-18 weeks of gestation (β = 0.57). Serum inflammatory cytokine concentrations were inversely related to DQ score in the 1-months-old offspring (β = [Formula: see text] 0.22)., Conclusions: Maternal FA supplementation during pregnancy favors neurodevelopment in the offspring at 1-month-old. This association may be mediated by changes in serum Hcy and inflammatory cytokine concentrations throughout pregnancy.

Graphene-based strain sensors have attracted tremendous interest due to their potential application as intelligent wearable sensing devices. However, for graphene-based strain sensors, it is found that the sensing property at the beginning of the tensile cycle is not stable. Concretely, the peak resistance value gradually declines in the first dozens of cycles in every cyclic test. This is a problem that obviously affects the measurement accuracy but is rarely investigated so far. In this paper, this phenomenon is for the first time systematically studied. According to the reliable experimental results, it can be concluded that the decline of resistance is caused by the evolution of wrinkle morphologies in the graphene layer, which is essentially attributed to the temporary slippage of the graphene sheets under external stress. Based on the analyzed mechanism, a targeted improvement solution was proposed and verified. By the combined effects of polydopamine and Ni 2+ , the slippage among the rGO sheets was suppressed and a strain sensor with excellent sensing stability was obtained as expected. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the modified sensor was six times higher than that of the pristine one due to the change in the crack form, demonstrating it to be an effective method to obtain a graphene-based strain sensor with comprehensively high performance.

Objective: To explore the interactions between pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and age on offspring neuropsychological development from 1 to 24 months in China., Methods: In this birth cohort study, a total of 2,253 mother-child pairs were enrolled in Tianjin, China, between July 2015 and May 2018. The China Developmental Scale for Children was used to assess developmental quotient (DQ) of children aged from 1 to 24 months., Results: Mixed-models analysis revealed significant age × pre-pregnancy BMI interactions for total DQ and five neurobehavioral domains (gross motor, fine motor, adaptive, language, and social; P < 0.001). Age × pre-pregnancy BMI ⪖ 25 kg/m2 was associated with a negative effect on total DQ and five neurobehavioral domains, as compared to pre-pregnancy BMI < 25 kg/m2 (P < 0.01). Multiple comparisons showed pre-pregnancy BMI ⪖ 25 kg/m2 of mothers had a positive effect on child total DQ at the age of 1 month but a negative effect at 24 months (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: This study supported the age × pre-pregnancy BMI interaction on offspring neuropsychological development. It also revealed a short-term positive impact of high pre-pregnancy BMI on neuropsychological development at 1 month of age, but a long-term negative effect (from 1 to 24 months)., (Copyright © 2019 The Editorial Board of Biomedical and Environmental Sciences. Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a type of sterile inflammation of the pancreas, potentially leading to systemic inflammatory response syndrome or multiple organ failure. An emerging evidence that dysfunction of miRNA expression may alter pivotal physiological functions and lead to inflammation infiltration and complication of multiple diseases, including AP. Here, the AP model was successfully replicated using cerulein in vitro and in vivo. RT-qPCR was used to detect low expression of miR-148a in AP. This study verified that IL-6 was a direct target of miR-148a. Over-expression of miR-148a decreased the mRNA and protein levels of IL-6 by RT-qPCR and Elisa. Moreover, over-expression of miR-148a improved the pathological state of AP through H&E and MPO staining and transmission electron microscopy. After over-expressing miR-148a, Western blot and immunohistochemical method were used to confirm the reduction of autophagosomes and autolysosomes, blockade of the levels of p-STAT3, LC3-II, ATG7, ATG4c, Beclin1 and the increased p62 expression in AP. The expression of LAMP-2 was not significantly different. In addition, IL-6 and AG490, the IL-6/STAT3 signaling inhibitor, were used to verify the role of IL-6/STAT3 signaling in the regulation of miR-148a on autophagy in cerulein-induced AP in vitro and in vivo. Taken together, our findings indicate that miR-148a suppresses autophagy via regulating IL-6/STAT3 signaling in cerulein-induced AP in vitro and in vivo. To realize macroscopic utilization of the excellent properties of graphene, various forms of graphene assemblies have been investigated. Among them, the gel form assemblies show great advantages because of their shapeable and self-healable properties and facile and simple manufacturing processes. For the conventional gel-formed graphene assemblies, a relatively large content of binders including hydrophilic polymers, celluloses, or/and amorphous inorganic materials is necessary in achieving the gelation. However, these binders are electrically nonconductive and electrochemically inactive, which would weaken the favorable functionalities of the composite, and the potential advantages of graphene cannot be fully utilized. Herein, a binder-free silver nanowire (Ag-NW)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) gel-like composite is designed and successfully fabricated by employing the ultralong Ag-NWs to enhance the hierarchical synergistic effects. The fabrication technique is highly efficient and repeatable, and the obtained composite is flexible, stretchable, and self-healable. Furthermore, the overall properties of the composite can be easily adjusted in a wide range by controlling the mass ratio between Ag-NW and rGO, which makes it multipurpose and suitable in different applications. Several demonstrations have been carried out, and some special performances including linear strain sensing range and rapid transformation from wet to dry state are found in this unique composite. This binder-free structure could also be expanded to other material systems, which may offer a valuable inspiration for the development of functional devices based on the nanocomposite.

Objective: To describe the prevalence of preterm birth (PB), low birth weight (LBW), and small for gestational age (SGA) among HIV-infected pregnant women and to identify associated risk factors in Hunan province. Methods: This study appeared a retrospective one on HIV-infected pregnant women retrieved from Information System of Prevention of Mother-to-child Transmission of HIV management in Hunan province, between January 2011 and December 2017. Information regarding demographic characteristics, pregnancy, antiretroviral therapy (ART), husbands/partners' relevant situation and pregnancy outcomes, among these HIV-infected pregnant women were collected and analyzed. The incidence rates on PB, LBW and SGA were calculated. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the associated risk factors. Results: A total of 780 HIV-infected pregnant women were enrolled. The prevalence rates on PB, LBW and SGA in HIV- infected pregnant women appeared as 7.9% (62/780), 9.9% (77/780) and 21.3% (166/780), respectively. Results from the multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that factors as pregnancy related diseases as moderate/severe anemia, hypertensive, initial time of ART <14 gestational weeks (compared to those women without ART during pregnancy) and husbands/partners' age >35 years old (compared to husbands/partners' age 26-30 years old) etc ., were associated with an increased risk of PB with adjusted OR as 4.59 (95 %CI : 1.51-13.95), 4.90 (95 %CI : 1.56-15.46), 2.40 (95 %CI : 1.26- 4.56) and 2.29 (95 %CI : 1.21-4.36). For LBW, pregnancy moderate/severe anemia, pregnancy HBV infection and initial time of ART <14 gestational weeks were associated with an increased risk of LBW, with adjusted OR as 3.28 (95 %CI : 1.13-9.54), 4.37 (95 %CI : 1.42-13.44) and 2.68 (95 %CI : 1.51-4.76), respectively. For SGA, pregnancy HBV infection and initial time of ART <14 gestational weeks were risk factors for SGA, with adjusted OR as 4.41 (95 %CI : 1.43-13.63) and 2.67 (95 %CI : 1.51-4.73), respectively. Conclusion: Preterm birth, LBW and SGA were common adverse pregnancy outcomes for HIV-infected pregnant women and were associated with factors as pregnancy complications, ART and husbands/partners' age.

Objective: To improve the accuracy of diagnosis and to reduce the misdiagnosis rate of nasopharyngeal carcinoma by analyzing the characteristics of such masses. Methods: Clinical data from 55 patients with suspicion of nasopharyngeal carcinoma diagnosed and treated between March 2016 and September 2017 were analyzed. All patients were followed up regularly. Results: With following-up of 12 to 25 months, 6 (10.9%) of 55 cases were identified as nasopharyngeal malignant tumors, including 4 cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and 2 cases of lymphoma, and 49 cases (89.1%) were diagnosed with nasopharyngeal benign masses, including 29 (59.2%) cases for nasopharyngeal lymphoid proliferation, 15 (30.6%) for adenoid hypertrophy, 2 (4.1%) for nasopharyngeal cyst, 1 (2.0%) for polyp, 1 for papilloma and 1 for nasopharyngeal pharyngeal cyst. Small nasopharyngeal malignant tumor and masses with benign hyperplasia showed the overlap of images on the enhanced MRI/CT and Fibro-nasopharyngoscopy, but all 6 patients with nasopharyngeal malignant tumors presented with moderately enhanced multiple enlarged lymph nodes. Conclusions: Fibro-nasopharyngoscopy and enhanced MRI/CT have some value on evaluation of nasopharyngeal masses, but biopsy is a golden standard for diagnosis. Follow-up is necessary for the patients with negative biopsy and benign nasopharyngeal hyperplasia indicated by fibro-nasopharyngoscopy and enhanced MRI/CT.

Shallow lakes are vulnerable to eutrophication because of abundant phytoplankton and significant nutrient input from sediments. Previous studies have researched the effect of environmental factors on phytoplankton and phosphorus release from sediment. However, few studies have simultaneously evaluated the interactive effects of environmental factors on phytoplankton communities and the interactions among different sediment nutrients. This paper reports on a 2016 investigation that examined the phytoplankton community and physical and chemical factors in both the water column and sediments in a Chinese shallow lake and its adjoining rivers. Our results indicated that rivers with water gates and lake areas had greater Chlorophyll a concentrations (Chl a) than natural rivers with similar total phosphorus (TP) concentrations; this indicates the importance of residence time on phytoplankton biomass. Although temperature impacted Chl a less than nutrients, its effects were highly species-specific, modulating relationships between nutrients and the abundance of different phytoplankton taxa. The effects of nutrients changed based on phytoplankton biomass and community composition, suggesting that different phytoplankton taxa have different nutrient demands. We predict that increasing residence time, temperature, and nutrients will increase phytoplankton biomass and increase the future dominance of Chlorophyta and Cyanophyta. In the interstitial water, there were no significant seasonal differences in TP, total nitrogen, and soluble reactive silica concentrations. However, ammonia concentrations were higher in the spring and lower in other seasons; nitrate and sulfate were abundant when the ammonia concentration was low. The total iron level in sediments was significantly negatively related with TP at low ammonia and silica concentrations and at high nitrate and sulfate concentrations in the interstitial water. These results indicated that nutrients are closely coupled in the sediments, highlighting the importance of oxidation-reduction potentials on internal nutrient balance., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. EZR, a member of the ezrin-radixin-moesin (ERM) family, is involved in multiple aspects of cell migration and cancer. SMYD3, a histone H3-lysine 4 (H3-K4)-specific methyltransferase, regulates EZR gene transcription, but the molecular mechanisms of epigenetic regulation remain ill-defined. Here, we show that antisense lncRNA EZR-AS1 was positively correlated with EZR expression in both human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) tissues and cell lines. Both in vivo and in vitro studies revealed that EZR-AS1 promoted cell migration through up-regulation of EZR expression. Mechanistically, antisense lncRNA EZR-AS1 formed a complex with RNA polymerase II to activate the transcription of EZR. Moreover, EZR-AS1 could recruit SMYD3 to a binding site, present in a GC-rich region downstream of the EZR promoter, causing the binding of SMYD3 and local enrichment of H3K4me3. Finally, the interaction of EZR-AS1 with SMYD3 further enhanced EZR transcription and expression. Our findings suggest that antisense lncRNA EZR-AS1, as a member of an RNA polymerase complex and through enhanced SMYD3-dependent H3K4 methylation, plays an important role in enhancing transcription of the EZR gene to promote the mobility and invasiveness of human cancer cells.

Background: Increasing evidence shows that dysregulated long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) can serve as potential biomarkers for cancer prognosis. However, lncRNA signatures, as potential prognostic biomarkers for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), have been seldom reported., Methods: Based on our previous transcriptome RNA sequencing analysis from 15 paired ESCC tissues and adjacent normal tissues, we selected 10 lncRNAs with high score rank and characterized the expression of those lncRNAs, by qRT-PCR, in 138 ESCC and paired adjacent normal samples. These 138 patients were divided randomly into training (n = 77) and test (n = 59) groups. A prognostic signature of lncRNAs was identified in the training group and validated in the test group and in an independent cohort (n = 119). Multivariable Cox regression analysis evaluated the independence of the signature in overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) prediction. GO and KEGG pathway analysis, combined with cell transwell and proliferation assays, are applied to explore the function of the three lncRNAs., Results: A novel three-lncRNA signature, comprised of RP11-366H4.1.1 (ENSG00000248370), LINC00460 (ENSG00000233532) and AC093850.2 (ENSG00000230838), was identified. The signature classified patients into high-risk and low-risk groups with different overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). For the training group, median OS: 23.1 months vs. 39.1 months, P < 0.001; median DFS: 15.2 months vs. 33.3 months, P < 0.001. For the test group, median OS: 23 months vs. 59 months, P < 0.001; median DFS: 16.4 months vs. 50.8 months, P < 0.001. For the independent cohort, median OS: 22.4 months vs. 60.4 months, P < 0.001). The signature indicates that patients in the high-risk group show poor OS and DFS, whereas patients with a low-risk group show significantly better outcome. The independence of the signature was validated by multivariable Cox regression analysis. GO and KEGG pathway analysis for 588 protein-coding genes-associated with the three lncRNAs indicated that the three lncRNAs were involved in tumorigenesis. In vitro assays further demonstrated that the three lncRNAs promoted the migration and proliferation of ESCC cells., Conclusions: The three-lncRNA signature is a novel and potential predictor of OS and DFS for patients with ESCC.

Here, we propose and demonstrate a complete solution for efficiently fabricating in-plane micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) from a symmetric to asymmetric structure. By using an original laser printing process, symmetric MSC with reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/silver nanowire (Ag-NW) hybrid electrodes was facilely fabricated and a high areal capacitance of 5.5 mF cm -2 was achieved, which reaches the best reports on graphene-based MSCs. More importantly, a "print-and-fold" method has been creatively proposed that enabled the rapid manufacturing of asymmetric in-plane MSCs beyond the traditional cumbersome technologies. α-Ni(OH) 2 particles with high tapping density were successfully synthesized and employed as the pseudocapacitive material. Consequently, an improved supply voltage of 1.5 V was obtained and an areal capacitance as high as 8.6 mF cm -2 has been realized. Moreover, a demonstration of a miniaturized MSC pack was performed by multiply-folding the serial Ag-NW-connected MSC units. As a result, a compact MSC pack with a high supply voltage of 3 V was obtained, which can be utilized to power a light-emitting diode light. These presented technologies may pave the way for the efficiently producing high performance in-plane MSCs, meanwhile offering a solution for the achievement of practical power supply packs integrated in limited spaces.

The sharp proliferation of high power electronics and electrical vehicles has promoted growing demands for power sources with both high energy and power densities. Under these circumstances, battery-supercapacitor hybrid devices are attracting considerable attention as they combine the advantages of both batteries and supercapacitors. Here, a novel type of hybrid device based on a carbon skeleton/Mg 2 Ni free-standing electrode without the traditional nickel foam current collector is reported, which has been designed and fabricated through a dispersing-freeze-drying method by employing reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as a hybrid skeleton. As a result, the Mg 2 Ni alloy is able to deliver a high discharge capacity of 644 mAh g -1 and, more importantly, a high cycling stability with a retention of over 78% after 50 charge/discharge cycles have been achieved, which exceeds almost all the results ever reported on the Mg 2 Ni alloy. Simultaneously, the electrode could also exhibit excellent supercapacitor performances including high specific capacities (296 F g -1 ) and outstanding cycling stability (100% retention after 100 cycles). Moreover, the hybrid device can switch between battery and supercapacitor modes immediately as needed during application. These features make the C skeleton/alloy electrode a highly promising candidate for battery-supercapacitor hybrid devices with high power/energy density and favorable cycling stability.

Objective: To investigate the status of folic acid (FA) supplementation and determinants of its use in pregnant Chinese women., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, questionnaires were used to collect information of participants and FA supplementation. Women were recruited between 6 and 12 weeks postpartum in Tianjin, China, between July 2015 and July 2016., Results: A total of 1,921 women were recruited in the study. Approximately 93.1% of the study participants used FA, while 14.4% of the women taking FA from three months prior to preconception to three months post-conception. Women who took FA for three months prior to preconception through at least three months into their pregnancy were more likely to be between 30 and 34 years old (OR = 2.91, 95% CI: 1.15, 7.33), employed (OR = 2.07, 95% CI: 1.17, 3.67), primigravida (OR = 5.20, 95% CI: 3.02, 8.96), married to spouses with an intermediate education level (OR = 2.92, 95% CI: 1.45, 5.89), and earn a high family income (OR = 3.19, 95% CI: 1.57, 6.49)., Conclusion: The prevalence of periconceptional FA intake was far below the requirements of the National Health and Family Planning Commission of China; therefore, knowledge of FA supplementation should be strengthened among women who are or planning to become pregnant., (Copyright © 2017 The Editorial Board of Biomedical and Environmental Sciences. LncRNAs play a vital role in alternative splicing of target genes. However, the mechanisms underlying lncRNAs involvement in splicing are poorly understood. In the present study, we identified a previously uncharacterized lncRNA, which is denoted as TPM1-AS, is reverse-transcribed from the fourth intronic region of the tropomyosin I (TPM1). In situ hybridization and RNA immunoprecipitation assays demonstrated that TPM1-AS was located in the nucleus and interacted with RNA-binding motif protein 4 (RBM4) in human esophageal cancer cells. TPM1-AS overexpression or RBM4 knockdown decreased endogenous exon 2a expression of TPM1, resulting in specifically down-regulation of TPM1variant V2 and V7 in human esophageal cancer cells. Mechanismly, the interaction of TPM1-AS with RBM4 hindered binding of RBM4 to TPM1 pre-mRNA and inhibited RBM4 to promote endogenous exon 2a inclusion of TPM1. Importantly, overexpression of TPM1-AS inhibited migration and filopodium formation, whereas TPM1variant V2 and V7 promoted these behaviors of human esophageal cancer cells. Taken together, the results suggest that a natural antisense TPM1-AS regulates the alternative splicing of TPM1 through an interaction with RBM4 and involves in TPM1-mediated filopodium formation and migration of cancer cells., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Low-capacity retention is the most prominent problem of the magnesium nickel alloy (Mg 2 Ni), which prevents it from being commercially applied. Here, we propose a practical method for enhancing the cycle stability of the Mg 2 Ni alloy. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) possesses a graphene-based structure, which could provide high-quality barriers that block the hydroxyl in the aqueous electrolyte; it also possesses good hydrophilicity. rGO has been successfully coated on the amorphous-structured Mg 2 Ni alloy via electrostatic assembly to form the rGO-encapsulated Mg 2 Ni alloy composite (rGO/Mg 2 Ni). The experimental results show that ζ potentials of rGO and the modified Mg 2 Ni alloy are totally opposite in water, with values of -11.0 and +22.4 mV, respectively. The crumpled structure of rGO sheets and the contents of the carbon element on the surface of the alloy are measured using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectrometry. The Tafel polarization test indicates that the rGO/Mg 2 Ni system exhibits a much higher anticorrosion ability against the alkaline solution during charging/discharging. As a result, high-capacity retentions of 94% (557 mAh g -1 ) at the 10th cycle and 60% (358 mAh g -1 ) at the 50th cycle have been achieved, which are much higher than the results on Mg 2 Ni capacity retention combined with the absolute value reported so far to our knowledge. In addition, both the charge-transfer reaction rate and the hydrogen diffusion rate are proven to be boosted with the rGO encapsulation. Overall, this work demonstrates the effective anticorrosion and electrochemical property-enhancing effects of rGO coating and shows its applicability in the Mg-based hydrogen storage system.

Objective: To describe the situation and identify factors associated with malnutrition among infants and young children aged 6-23 months in poor rural areas in Hunan Province in 2015. Methods: 8 735 rural infants and young children aged 6-23 months in 30 poor counties of Wuling Mountains and Luoxiao Mountains in Hu'nan province were selected by township-level probability proportional to size sampling (PPS) in August 2015, infants' body length and weight were measured, and questionnaires were used to collect infants' information on personal and family, and feeding status in the past 24 h. The prevalence of stunting, underweight and wasting were calculated according to the Growth Standards of Child Aged Under 7 in China which was established in 2009 by Community Health Department of National Health and Family Planning Commission, China (formerly Chinese MOH), and the prevalence of malnutrition was calculated according to the classification of children with anthropometric failure. Multi non-conditional logistic regression model were used to analyze factors associated with malnutrition among infants and young children aged 6-23 months. Results: The prevalence of malnutrition among infants and young children aged 6-23 months was 13.7% (1 198/8 735), the prevalence of stunting, underweight and wasting among infants and young children aged 6-23 months were 4.8% (419/8 735), 9.7% (849/8 735) and 6.1% (531/8 735) respectively. Compared with male group, the OR value of malnutrition for the female group was 1.16; Compared with Han ethnic group, the OR value of malnutrition for the Miao and Tujia ethnic group were 0.83 and 0.66, respectively; Compared with mother with an education level of primary school or below, the OR value of malnutrition for the mother with junior high school, senior high school and university or above education were 0.65, 0.61 and 0.56, respectively; Compared with father with an education level of primary school or below, the OR value of malnutrition for the father with senior high school and university or above education were 0.71 and 0.61 respectively; Compared with normal birth weight group, the OR value of malnutrition for the low birth weight group and high birth weight group were 2.85 and 0.27 respectively; Compared with normal delivery group, the OR value of malnutrition for the premature delivery group was 1.37; all P values<0.05. Conclusion: The prevalence of malnutrition among infants and young children aged 6-23 months in poor rural areas in Hunan province in 2015 was high; Infants and young children who were female, Han ethnic, parents with low education, low birth weight and premature delivery had higher risk of malnutrition.

Touch sensor is one of the key components for human interfacing devices. However, although various touch sensors have been demonstrated, their sophisticated fabrication processes and complicated structures make them expensive and delicate, and thus they are not considered to be practical for wide application in daily life. Herein, we present a low-cost and scalable paper-based touch sensor suitable for practical applications. The sensor is based on the novel structure of embedded silver nanowire micro-probe arrays in a paper substrate, which exhibits high sensitivity to multiple touch inputs and compact structure with a total thickness of ca. 100 μm. Silver nanowire electrodes on two sides are manufactured at the same time via an original double-sided laser printing technique. Since this technique is mask-free, solvent-free and highly efficient, it is very suitable for paper substrates that cannot endure solvent processing. The sensing properties of the sensor in various extreme situations are examined and the spatial distributions of touch pressure are detected by arranging the sensing units in arrays. Demonstration examples of the touch sensor and pressure mapping are presented, and finally, the successful application of the sensor array in an electronic lock system is shown to further illustrate its applicability.

Introduction: High-tension electricity can cause devastating injuries that may result in abdominal wall loss, visceral damage, and sometimes major threat to life. The visceral organ may be exposed after debridement and require flap cover, but the tensile strength of abdominal wall may be lack even if flap transplanted., Methods: From April 2007 through May 2015, 5 patients with severe abdominal electrical injury were treated at our hospital. Exploratory laparotomy was performed based on their clinical manifestations and debridement findings of abdominal wall at early stage, and decision regarding technique for reconstruction of abdominal wall was based on an assessment of the location and extent of the defect. Medical records were reviewed for these data., Results: Clinical evaluation and debridement findings of the abdomen revealed 4 patients with suspicious visceral damage. Laparotomy was performed in 4 cases, and revealed obvious lesion in 3 cases, including segmental necrosis of small intestine, partial necrosis of diaphragm, left liver and gastric wall, and greater omentum. Five patients underwent abdominal wall reconstruction using island retrograde latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap or free/island composite anterolateral thigh myocutaneous flap. All flaps survived, abdominal bulging occurred in 3 cases after follow-up of 12 to 36 months., Conclusions: The clinical manifestations and wound features of abdomen collectively suggest a possible requirement of laparotomy for severe abdominal electrical burns. Retrograde latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap or composite anterolateral thigh myocutaneous flap is an effective option for reconstruction of abdominal wall loss, the long-term complication of abdominal bulging, however, remains a significant clinical challenge.

Increased blood plasma concentration of the sulphur amino acid homocysteine (Hcy) is considered as an independent risk factor of the neurodegenerative diseases. However, the detailed molecular mechanisms by which Hcy leads to neurotoxicity have yet to be clarified. Recent research has suggested that neurotoxicity of Hcy may involve negative regulation of neural stem cell (NSC) proliferation. In the current study, primary NSCs were isolated from neonatal rat brain hippocampus and the inhibition in cell growth was observed after exposure to l50 μM and 500 μM L-Hcy. The changes in protein expression were monitored with densitometric 2D-gel electrophoresis coupled with MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Proteomic analysis revealed that the expression levels of two mitochondrial proteins, cytochrome bc1 complex2 (UQCRC2, the major component of electron transport chain complex III) and aconitase (an enzyme involved in the tricarboxylic acid cycle), were decreased in Hcy treatment group, compared to control group. Protein expression was further verified by Western blot, and their enzymatic activities were also down-regulated in NSCs after Hcy treatment. Restoration of aconitase and UQCRC2 protein levels using their expression vectors could partly rescue the cell viability inhibition caused by Hcy. Moreover, Hcy caused the increase in the intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the decrease in ATP content, which are known to play important roles in the cellular stress response of the cell growth. Altogether, the results suggest that the decreased expression and enzymatic activities of the mitochondrial proteins may be possible causes of the overproduction of ROS and depletion of ATP. The inhibition in cell growth at the end of Hcy treatment was probably due to the changes in protein expression and mitochondrial dysfunction in vitro cultures of NSCs.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have a critical role in cancer initiation and progression, and thus may mediate oncogenic or tumor suppressing effects, as well as be a new class of cancer therapeutic targets. We performed high-throughput sequencing of RNA (RNA-seq) to investigate the expression level of lncRNAs and protein-coding genes in 30 esophageal samples, comprised of 15 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) samples and their 15 paired non-tumor tissues. We further developed an integrative bioinformatics method, denoted URW-LPE, to identify key functional lncRNAs that regulate expression of downstream protein-coding genes in ESCC. A number of known onco-lncRNA and many putative novel ones were effectively identified by URW-LPE. Importantly, we identified lncRNA625 as a novel regulator of ESCC cell proliferation, invasion and migration. ESCC patients with high lncRNA625 expression had significantly shorter survival time than those with low expression. LncRNA625 also showed specific prognostic value for patients with metastatic ESCC. Finally, we identified E1A-binding protein p300 (EP300) as a downstream executor of lncRNA625-induced transcriptional responses. These findings establish a catalog of novel cancer-associated functional lncRNAs, which will promote our understanding of lncRNA-mediated regulation in this malignancy.

BACKGROUND In this study we investigated changes in the status of antibiotic use in Tianjin since the implementation of the Antibiotic Stewardship Program (ASP) (2011-2013), as well as existing problems, strategies, and outcomes to promote rational clinical antibiotic use. MATERIAL AND METHODS A quasi-experimental study was performed to investigate situations of antibiotic use in secondary and tertiary general hospitals in Tianjin from April 2011 to 2013. Five major indicators were analyzed: percentage of antibiotic use in inpatient cases (%), antibacterial use density (AUD), proportion of prophylactic antibiotic application for type I surgical incision, compliance rate of medication administration 0.5-2.0 h before such procedures, and antibiotic prophylaxis for ≤24 h in patients receiving these surgeries. RESULTS There was a decrease in the percentage of antibiotic use across general hospitals (60.38% to 46.88%), in AUD (51.60% to 35.37%), and in the proportion of prophylactic antibiotic applications for type I incisions (86.67% to 25.08%). For patients undergoing these procedures, there was an increased compliance rate of medication administration of 0.5-2.0 h prior to surgery (86.38% to 100%), and of antibiotic prophylactic use for ≤24 h (40.30% to 96.37%). CONCLUSIONS Implementation of the ASP campaign has reduced irrational antibiotic use, promoted rational antibiotic use, and delayed antibiotic resistance.

It is well accepted that the microwave absorption performance (MAP) of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be enhanced via coating magnetic nanoparticles on their surfaces. However, it is still unclear if the magnetic coating structure has a significant influence on the microwave absorption behavior. In this work, nano-Fe 3 O 4 compact-coated CNTs (FCCs) and Fe 3 O 4 loose-coated CNTs (FLCs) are prepared using a simple solvothermal method. The MAP of the Fe 3 O 4 -coated CNTs is shown to be adjustable via controlling the Fe 3 O 4 nanocoating structure. The results reveal that the overall MAP of coated CNTs strongly depends on the magnetic coating structure. In addition, the FCCs show a much better MAP than the FLCs. It is shown that the microwave absorption difference between the FLCs and FCCs is due to the disparate complementarities between the dielectric loss and the magnetic loss, which are related to the coverage density of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles on the surfaces of CNTs. For FCCs, the mass ratio of CNTs to Fe 3+ is then optimized to maximize the effective complementarities between the dielectric loss and the magnetic loss. Finally, a comparison is made with the literature on Fe 3 O 4 -carbon-based composites. The FCCs at the optimized CNT to Fe 3+ ratio in the present work show the most effective specific RL min (28.7 dB·mm -1 ) and the widest effective bandwidth (RL < -10 dB) (8.3 GHz). The excellent MAP of the as-prepared FCC sample is demonstrated to result from the consequent dielectric relaxation process and the improved magnetic loss. Consequently, the structure-property relationship revealed is significant for the design and preparation of CNT-based materials with effective microwave absorption.

Objective: To describe the status of, and to identify the factors associated with, complementary feeding among infants and young children aged 6- 23 months in poor rural areas of Hunan Province, China. Methods: A total of 8 735 infants and young children aged 6- 23 months from 30 poor rural counties in the Wuling and Luoxiao Mountains in Hunan Province were selected by township-level probability-proportional-to-size sampling in August 2015. Questionnaires were used to collect information on the feeding status of the infants in the previous 24 hours, along with personal/family information. The qualified rate of minimum dietary diversity (MDD), the minimum meal frequency (MMF) and the minimum acceptable diet (MAD) were calculated according to the WHO indicators for assessing infant and young child feeding practices. Multi non-conditional logistic regression models were used to analyze factors associated with complementary feeding among infants and young children aged 6- 23 months. Results: The findings indicated that 73.9% (6 452/8 735) of infants and young children aged 6-23 months received the minimum dietary diversity, 81.6% (7 124/8 735) of infants and young children aged 6- 23 months received the minimum meal frequency and 49.0% (4 276/8 735) of infants and young children aged 6- 23 months received an acceptable diet. Compared with the boys, the OR for the MMF and MAD for the girls were 1.15 and 1.11, respectively. Compared with the 6-11 month group, the OR for the MDD for the 12-17 month and 18-23 month groups were 0.41 and 0.38, respectively; the OR for the MMF for the 12-17 month and 18-23 month groups were 1.53 and 2.46, respectively; and the OR for the MAD for the 12-17 month and 18-23 month groups were 0.60 and 0.60, respectively. Compared with the Han ethnic group, the OR for the MDD, MMF and MAD for the Miao ethnic group were 1.43, 1.72 and 1.56, respectively; for the Tujia ethnic group were 2.21, 2.02 and 2.11, respectively; and for the Dong ethnic group were 0.62, 0.61 and 0.64, respectively. When analyzing data related to the children's mothers, compared with women who gestated at the age of 25- 29, the OR for the MMF for women who gestated at less than 20 years of age was 1.59 and at greater than or equal to 35 years of age was 1.33. Compared with women with primary school education or below, the OR for the MDD, MMF and MAD for women with junior high school education were 0.77, 0.74 and 0.80, respectively; for women with senior high school education were 0.67, 0.65 and 0.68, respectively; and for women educated to university level or above were 0.66, 0.47 and 0.60, respectively. Compared with the normal birth weight group, the OR for the MMF for the low birth weight group was 0.71, and for the high birth weight group was 1.30. Compared with the caregivers who provided qualified feeding knowledge, the OR for the MDD, MMF and MAD for the caregivers who provided unqualified feeding knowledge were 1.45, 1.30 and 1.40, respectively. Compared with the breastfed group, the OR for the MDD and the MMF for the non-breastfed group were 0.53 and 0.36, respectively. All P values were <0.05. Conclusion: Most infants and young children aged 6-23 months in poor rural areas of China met the MDD and MMF requirements, but fewer met the MAD requirements. The risk factors in infants and young children for complementary feeding included being of female gender, lower in age (months), of Miao or Tujia ethnicity, being born to a mother who gestated at less than 20 or ≥35 years of age, being born to a mother of low education, having a high birth weight, having a caregiver who provided unqualified feeding knowledge and being breastfed.

Objective: To investigate the inactivation of PMS2 gene mediated by promoter methylation and its regulatory mechanism in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Methods: Fifty-four NPC tissues, 16 normal nasopharyngeal epithelia (NNE), 5 NPC cell lines (CNE1, CNE2, TWO3, HNE1 and HONE1) and 1 normal nasopharyngeal epithelial cell line (NP69) were collected.Methylation-specific PCR (MSP) was used to detect the PMS2 promoter methylation, semi-quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) was applied to determine its mRNA expression, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) was used to detect the protein expression of PMS2. The expressions of PMS2 mRNA in CNE1 and CNE2 cells before and after treated with methyltransferase inhibitor 5-aza-2-deoxycytidine were analyzed by qRT-PCR. The impact of methylation and demethylation on the mRNA expression of PMS2, and the association of mRNA and protein expression of PMS2 with clinicopathological features of nasopharyngeal cancer were analyzed. Results: Methylation of PMS2 gene was detected in all of the five NPC cell lines, but not in normal nasopharyngeal epithelial NP69 cells. The methylation rate of PMS2 gene in NPC tissues was 63% (34/54), significantly higher than that of the normal nasopharyngeal epithelia (0/16, P <0.001). The expression levels of PMS2 mRNA and protein were significantly down-regulated in the 54 NPC tissues when compared with those in the 16 NNE tissues ( P <0.001), and were also significantly lower in the 34 methylated NPC tissues than those in the 20 unmethylated NPC tissues ( P <0.001). After treatment with 5-aza-2-deoxycytidine, the expression of PMS2 mRNA was restored in the CNE1 and CNE2 cells.However, the expressions of PMS2 mRNA and protein were not significantly correlated with patients' age, gender, TNM stage, histopathologic type or lymph node metastasis ( P >0.05 for all). Conclusions: Promoter methylation-mediated inactivation of PMS2 gene participates in carcinogenesis and development of NPC. PMS2 may be a candidate tumor suppressor in the treatment for patients with inactivation of PMS2 promoter methylation.

Laser printing has been widely used in daily life, and the fabricating process is highly efficient and mask-free. Here we propose a laser printing process for the rapid fabrication of paper-based multilayer circuits. It does not require wetting of the paper, which is more competitive in manufacturing paper-based circuits compared to conventional liquid printing process. In the laser printed circuits, silver nanowires (Ag-NWs) are used as conducting material for their excellent electrical and mechanical properties. By repeating the printing process, multilayer three-dimensional (3D) structured circuits can be obtained, which is quite significant for complex circuit applications. In particular, the performance of the printed circuits can be exactly controlled by varying the process parameters including Ag-NW content and laminating temperature, which offers a great opportunity for rapid prototyping of customized products with designed properties. A paper-based high-frequency radio frequency identification (RFID) label with optimized performance is successfully demonstrated. By adjusting the laminating temperature to 180 °C and the top-layer Ag-NW areal density to 0.3 mg cm(-2), the printed RFID antenna can be conjugately matched with the chip, and a big reading range of ∼12.3 cm with about 2.0 cm over that of the commercial etched Al antenna is achieved. This work provides a promising approach for fast and quality-controlled fabrication of multilayer circuits on common paper and may be enlightening for development of paper-based devices.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia. Amyloid-β protein (Aβ) is identified as the core protein of neuritic plaques. Aβ is generated by the sequential cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) via the APP cleaving enzyme (α-secretase, or β-secretase) and γ-secretase. Previous studies indicated that folate deficiency elevated Aβ deposition in APP/PS1 mice, and this rise was prevented by folic acid. In the present study, we aimed to investigate whether folic acid could influence the generation of Aβ by regulating α-, β-, and γ-secretase. Herein, we demonstrated that folic acid reduced the deposition of Aβ42 in APP/PS1 mice brain by decreasing the mRNA and protein expressions of β-secretase [beta-site APP-cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1)] and γ-secretase complex catalytic component-presenilin 1 (PS1)-in APP/PS1 mice brain. Meanwhile, folic acid increased the levels of ADAM9 and ADAM10, which are important α-secretases in ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloprotease) family. However, folic acid has no impact on the protein expression of nicastrin (Nct), another component of γ-secretase complex. Moreover, folic acid regulated the expression of miR-126-3p and miR-339-5p, which target ADAM9 and BACE1, respectively. Taken together, the effect of folic acid on Aβ deposition may relate to making APP metabolism through non-amyloidogenic pathway by decreasing β-secretase and increasing α-secretase. Wearable electronics used in smart clothing for healthcare monitoring or personalized identification is a new and fast-growing research topic. The challenge is that the electronics has to be simultaneously highly stretchable, mechanically robust and water-washable, which is unreachable for traditional electronics or previously reported stretchable electronics. Herein we report the wearable electronics of sliver nanowire (Ag-NW)/poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) nanocomposite which can meet the above multiple requirements. The electronics of Ag-NW/PDMS nanocomposite films is successfully fabricated by an original pre-straining and post-embedding (PSPE) process. The composite film shows a very high conductivity of 1.52 × 10(4) S cm(-1) and an excellent electrical stability with a small resistance fluctuation under a large stretching strain. Meanwhile, it shows a robust adhesion between the Ag-NWs and the PDMS substrate and can be directly machine-washed. These advantages make it a competitive candidate as wearable electronics for smart clothing applications.

Excellent electrical conductivity (EC) generally conflicts with high lap shear strength (LSS) for electrically conductive adhesives (ECAs) since EC increases while LSS decreases with increasing conductive filler content. In this work, the ECAs with the excellent overall performance are developed based on the ternary hybrid of Ag microflakes (Ag-MFs), Ag nanospheres (Ag-NSs), and Ag nanowires (Ag-NWs). First, a low silver content adhesive system is determined. Then, the effects of the relative contents of Ag fillers on the EC and the LSS are studied. It is shown that a small amount of Ag-NSs or Ag-NWs can dramatically improve the EC for the Ag-MF/epoxy adhesives. The Ag-NSs and Ag-NWs with appropriate contents have a synergistic effect in improving the EC. Meanwhile, the LSS of the as-prepared adhesive with the appropriate Ag contents reaches an optimal value. Both the EC and the LSS of the as-prepared ternary hybrid ECA with a low content of 40 wt % Ag are higher than those of the commercial ECAs filled with the Ag-MF content over 60 wt %. Finally, the ternary hybrid ECA with the optimal formulation is shown to be promising for printing the radio frequency identification tag antennas as an immediate application example.

A sensitive pH-triggered electrical switch is demonstrated by using a layer-structured silver nanowire/polyaniline nanocomposite film fabricated via an easy vertical spinning method. The as-prepared nanocomposite film shows the high electrical conductivity of 1.03 × 10(4) S cm(-1) at the Ag-NW areal density of 0.84 mg cm(-2) and a good cycling stability. Particularly, because of the layered structure, the switch achieves a very high contrast ratio of ca. 9 × 10(8), which is 2-6 orders higher than that reported previously. The high electrical conductivity and the high switching ratio make the layer-structured nanocomposite film a sensitive switch candidate for pH-responsive systems. Finally, a smart pH self-adjusting switching system is successfully designed using the as-prepared layer-structured nanocomposite film.

Recent studies show that targeting gene promoter or 3' terminal regions of mRNA with siRNA induces target gene transcription. However, the ability of exon-targeting siRNA to affect transcription has yet to be demonstrated. We designed and synthesized siRNA against various exons in the gelsolin gene (GSN) to knockdown GSN transcript in KYSE150 and KYSE450 cells. Surprisingly, we found that siGSN-2, targeting the GSN twelfth exon, induced GSN gene transcription detected by real time RT-PCR. An siGSN-2 co-precipitation assay was performed and H3 histone, previously shown to correlate with gene transcription, was detected in the siGSN-2 pull-down pellet. However, H3 histone was not detected in an siGSN-1-precipitated pellet, which resulted in GSN knockdown. In addition, siGSN-2 decreased stress fibers, lamellipodia and filopodia, demonstrating that siGSN-2 induced GSN transcription activation and exerted biological function. In conclusion, our finds reveal siRNA, which is derived from target gene exon, can form the complex with H3 histone to be involved in the regulation of gene expression.

Here a facile, green and efficient printing-filtration-press (PFP) technique is reported for room-temperature (RT) mass-production of low-cost, environmentally friendly, high performance paper-based electronic circuits. The as-prepared silver nanowires (Ag-NWs) are uniformly deposited at RT on a pre-printed paper substrate to form high quality circuits via vacuum filtration and pressing. The PFP circuit exhibits more excellent electrical property and bending stability compared with other flexible circuits made by existing techniques. Furthermore, practical applications of the PFP circuits are demonstrated.

Purpose: To discuss the selection of appropriate post and core materials in order to obtain better fracture resistance for thin-walled teeth., Methods: Ninety maxillary incisors were endodontically treated and the crowns were cut off. Then they were randomly divided into 9 groups. The teeth in the first 4 groups were restored with cast (A1.3 and A1.6) and fiber (B1.3 and B1.6) posts of 1.3 and 1.7 mm diameters. The teeth in the other 5 groups were enlarged to simulate the 1 mm thin-walled teeth and restored with cast (C) and fiber posts. The fiber posts were reconstructed and cemented with Unicem (D1.3 and D1.6) and ParaCore (E1.3 and E1.6). All teeth were restored with full crown, and the fracture resistance and fracture mode were analysed. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS 16.0 software package., Results: Largest fracture resistance values (610.2 ± 45.6) N were found in Group A1.3 of ordinary root canals, and no significant difference (P>0.05) existed between Group A1.3, A1.6 and B1.3, B1.6. Group C received the largest fracture resistance value(584.5 ± 121.2) N in thin-walled root canals, and fiber posts reconstructed with ParaCore cement could increase fracture resistance [E1.3,(420.6 ± 95.7) N; E1.6,(517.9 ± 67.2) N], which was significant different compared with D1.3 and D1.6 (P<0.05), but similar to B1.3 and B1.6 in ordinary root canals., Conclusions: The root can be better preserved by fiber post and the fracture resistance is not affected by the posts with diameters of 1.3 mm and 1.6 mm. The fracture resistance of teeth can be enhanced by reconstruction of root canals with Paracore.
