2. Density-optimized Intersection-free Mapping and Matrix Multiplication for Join-Project Operations (extended version)

Abstract

A Join-Project operation is a join operation followed by a duplicate eliminating projection operation. It is used in a large variety of applications, including entity matching, set analytics, and graph analytics. Previous work proposes a hybrid design that exploits the classical solution (i.e., join and deduplication), and MM (matrix multiplication) to process the sparse and the dense portions of the input data, respectively. However, we observe three problems in the state-of-the-art solution: 1) The outputs of the sparse and dense portions overlap, requiring an extra deduplication step; 2) Its table-to-matrix transformation makes an over-simplified assumption of the attribute values; and 3) There is a mismatch between the employed MM in BLAS packages and the characteristics of the Join-Project operation. In this paper, we propose DIM3, an optimized algorithm for the Join-Project operation. To address 1), we propose an intersection-free partition method to completely remove the final deduplication step. For 2), we develop an optimized design for mapping attribute values to natural numbers. For 3), we propose DenseEC and SparseBMM algorithms to exploit the structure of Join-Project for better efficiency. Moreover, we extend DIM3 to consider partial result caching and support Join-op queries, including Join-Aggregate and MJP (Multi-way Joins with Projection). Experimental results using both real-world and synthetic data sets show that DIM3 outperforms previous Join-Project solutions by a factor of 2.3x-18x. Compared to RDBMSs, DIM3 achieves orders of magnitude speedups.

Abstract

As the global population ages, the friendliness of urban spaces towards seniors becomes increasingly crucial. This research primarily investigates the environmental factors that influence the safety perception of elderly people in living street spaces. Taking Dingzigu Street in Tianjin, China, as an example, by employing deep learning fully convolutional network (FCN-8s) technology and the semantic segmentation method based on computer vision, the objective measurement data of street environmental elements are acquired. Meanwhile, the subjective safety perception evaluation data of elderly people are obtained through SD semantic analysis combined with the Likert scale. Utilizing Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis, the study comprehensively examines the impact of the physical environment characteristics of living street spaces on the spatial safety perception of seniors. The results indicate that, among the objective environmental indicators, ① the street greening rate is positively correlated with the spatial sense of security of seniors; ② there is a negative correlation between sky openness and interface enclosure; and ③ the overall safety perception of seniors regarding street space is significantly influenced by the spatial sense of security, the sense of security during walking behavior, and the security perception in visual recognition. This research not only uncovers the impact mechanism of the street environment on the safety perception of seniors, but also offers valuable references for the age-friendly design of urban spaces. According to the survival status of 28-day after AKI and levels of RDW, patients were divided into survival and death groups, high RDW (RDW > 15.3%) and low RDW groups (RDW ≤ 15.3%). Kaplan–Meier curves were used to compare the survival rates of diabetic patients with AKI in different RDW and AKI stages, and Cox regression analysis was used to evaluate the risk factors of 28-day all-cause death in critical diabetic patients with AKI.Results: A total of 5200 patients with critical diabetic patients with AKI were included in this study with the male to female ratio of 1.53:1. The mean follow-up time was 24.97 ± 7.14 days, and the 28-day all-cause mortality was 17.9% (931/5200). Abstract

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is a persistent organic pollutant that might induce disorders in fatty acid (FA) metabolism, but the underlying mechanisms remain unresolved. Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) as a model organism can synthesize polyunsaturated FAs de novo via the polyunsaturated FA synthesis pathway. In this study, synchronized L1 C. elegans were exposed to 0, 0.01, 0.1, 0.5 and 1 μM PFOS for 72 h. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to establish a sensitive and reliable analysis method for PFASs in exposed nematode, the instrument detection limits of nine fatty acid methyl esters examined ranged between 1.11 and 27.6 ng/mL, with satisfactory reproducibility (RSD 10%) observed. Methyl pentadecanoate (C15:0) was used as an internal standard, the linearity of the calibration (0.1-10 μg/mL) nine FAs from the nematode were quantitatively analyzed. Comparing with the control group, PFOS exposure caused significantly decreased levels of C18:0 while significantly increased levels of C18:3n6. A decrease in the C18:3n6: C18:2n6 ratio was observed. Consistently, expression of the FA desaturation gene fat-3 was significantly down-regulated. These findings suggest that the FA disorder is associated with decrease in mRNA expression of Δ6-desaturase genes in C. elegans. Simultaneously, the disorders in FA metabolism were found to disrupt mitochondrial function with a reduction in ATP synthesis, as determined by the luciferase method. In summary, the results of the study provide insights into the adverse effects of PFOS on FA metabolism in living organisms.

34. Plurizentrik und DACH-Bezug bei Lehrwerken in brasilianischen Deutschstudiengängen : eine Bilanz

Der vorliegende Artikel greift die von Deutschlehrkräften regelmäßig geäußerten Zweifel auf, ob in Deutschland entwickelte Lehrwerke für den DaF-Unterricht die sprachliche und kulturelle Vielfalt des gesamten deutschsprachigen Raumes ausreichend darstellen. Um dieser Frage nachzugehen, werden zunächst Grundlagen der Lehrwerkanalyse und der Kulturdidaktik im Fach Deutsch als Fremdsprache erörtert. Es folgt die Darstellung der Untersuchung von neun Lehrbüchern, die 2019 in den brasilianischen Deutschstudiengängen kurstragend zum Einsatz kamen und die auf die Verwendung des DACH-Prinzips hin untersucht wurden. Die Ergebnisse legen nahe, dass die Schwierigkeiten beim Umgang mit landeskundlichen Themen im Deutschunterricht nicht vordergründig mit dem Fehlen von geeigneten Materialien zu tun haben, sondern vielmehr mit Unsicherheiten im Umgang mit der Kulturvermittlung. Es folgt deswegen abschließend ein Plädoyer für eine (noch) bewusstere Auseinandersetzung mit Kultur im Zuge der Deutschstudiengänge in Brasilien., This article analyzed doubts that are regularly expressed by German teachers concerning whether textbooks for teaching German as a Foreign Language (GFL) edited in Germany sufficiently represent the linguistic and cultural diversity of the entire German-speaking world. As a first step, the fundamental principles of textbook evaluation and cultural didactics in the field of GFL are discussed in this article, followed by the analysis of nine textbooks being used in German undergraduate courses of Brazilian universities in 2019 that were examined in view of an adequate representation of German speaking countries. The results suggest that the difficulties in dealing with cultural issues while teaching German are not predominantly related to the lack of suitable materials, but rather to uncertainties in handling cultural mediation. Therefore, the authors conclude with the plea for an even more conscious engagement with culture in teacher training, especially in German undergraduate courses in Brazil., O presente artigo parte da dúvida de numerosos professores de Alemão como Língua Estrangeira (ALE) sobre uma representação adequada que respeita a grande heterogeneidade linguística e cultural dos países germânicos em livros didáticos elaborados na Alemanha. Na primeira parte se situa a apresentação de algumas bases de avaliação de manuais didáticos e didática cultural sob a perspectiva da disciplina ALE. Na segunda parte, segue a análise de nove livros de ALE em uso em universidades brasileiras no ano 2019, com indicadores do "princípio DACH". Os resultados indicam que as dificuldades encontradas por professores de alemão em matéria de cultura alemã não teriam sua origem necessariamente na falta de material adequado, mas que seriam relacionadas com uma insegurança de como trabalhar conteúdo cultural em sala de aula. O artigo fecha com a reivindicação de integrar, ainda em escala maior, conteúdos culturais na formação de professores de alemão no Brasil.
