Abstract

Room-temperature continuous-wave operation of InGaAs/AlGaAs quantum well lasers directly grown on on-axis silicon (001) has been demonstrated. A 420 nm thick GaAs epilayer completely free of antiphase domains was initially grown on the silicon substrate in a metal-organic chemical vapor deposition system and the other epilayers including four sets of five-period strained-layer superlattices and the laser-structural layers were successively grown in a molecular beam epitaxy system. The lasers were prepared as broad-stripe Fabry-Perot ones with a stripe width of 21.5 um and a cavity length of 1 mm. Typically, the threshold current and the corresponding threshold current density are 186.4 mA and 867 A/cm2, respectively. The lasing wavelength is around 980 nm and the slope efficiency is 0.097 W/A with a single-facet output power of 22.5 mW at an injection current of 400 mA. Abstract

The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is the second largest and most widespread extant terrestrial carnivore on Earth and has recently emerged as a medical model for human metabolic diseases. Here, we report a fully phased chromosome-level assembly of a male North American brown bear built by combining Pacific Biosciences (PacBio) HiFi data and publicly available Hi-C data. The final genome size is 2.47 Gigabases (Gb) with a scaffold and contig N50 length of 70.08 and 43.94 Megabases (Mb), respectively. Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Ortholog (BUSCO) analysis revealed that 94.5% of single copy orthologs from Mammalia were present in the genome (the highest of any ursid genome to date). Repetitive elements accounted for 44.48% of the genome and a total of 20,480 protein coding genes were identified. Based on whole genome alignment to the polar bear, the brown bear is highly syntenic with the polar bear, and our phylogenetic analysis of 7,246 single-copy orthologs supports the currently proposed species tree for Ursidae. This highly contiguous genome assembly will support future research on both the evolutionary history of the bear family and the physiological mechanisms behind hibernation, the latter of which has broad medical implications.

Abstract

A novel uni-traveling-carrier photodetector (UTC-PD) structure with an integrated focusing-reflection (FR) mirror realized by a non-periodic concentric circular high-contrast grating (NP-CC-HCG), referred to as FR-UTC-PD, is proposed to enhance responsivity in conventional UTC-PDs. The FR-UTC-PD allows improving the responsivity by 36.5% at a 1.55-um wavelength as compared to a UTC-PD without integrated an FR mirror with 84.59% reflectivity. For 40-um-diameter PDs, the obtained 3-dB bandwidths are unaltered with values of 18 GHz at -3.0 V bias voltage. The radio-frequency (RF) output power and photocurrent are -1.77 dBm and 17.56 mA, respectively, at 10 GHz and the -6.0 V bias voltage., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Structural variants (SVs) rearrange large segments of DNA1 and can have profound consequences in evolution and human disease2,3. As national biobanks, disease-association studies, and clinical genetic testing have grown increasingly reliant on genome sequencing, population references such as the Genome Aggregation Database (gnomAD)4 have become integral in the interpretation of single-nucleotide variants (SNVs)5. However, there are no reference maps of SVs from high-coverage genome sequencing comparable to those for SNVs. Here we present a reference of sequence-resolved SVs constructed from 14,891 genomes across diverse global populations (54% non-European) in gnomAD. We discovered a rich and complex landscape of 433,371 SVs, from which we estimate that SVs are responsible for 25-29% of all rare protein-truncating events per genome. We found strong correlations between natural selection against damaging SNVs and rare SVs that disrupt or duplicate protein-coding sequence, which suggests that genes that are highly intolerant to loss-of-function are also sensitive to increased dosage6. We also uncovered modest selection against noncoding SVs in cis-regulatory elements, although selection against protein-truncating SVs was stronger than all noncoding effects. Finally, we identified very large (over one megabase), rare SVs in 3.9% of samples, and estimate that 0.13% of individuals may carry an SV that meets the existing criteria for clinically important incidental findings7. This SV resource is freely distributed via the gnomAD browser8 and will have broad utility in population genetics, disease-association studies, and diagnostic screening.

Abstract

The postoperative evaluation of cleft lip is an important means to improve the operation method and the effect of the restoration. In recent years, the methods of cleft lip repair, such as Chinese western rotary propulsion, reconstruction of labial and nasal muscle tension band+trefoil flap, etc., have been developed. However, at present, there are still many secondary deformities, such as obvious scars and alar collapse. In this paper, in a review of the previous literature, the existing methods, advantages and disadvantages, and the application of the evaluation of the postoperative effect of cleft lip were reviewed. To date, there are many methods that can be used to evaluate the effect of cleft lip surgery. These research methods can be divided into subjective evaluation and objective evaluation, such as subjective evaluation, direct measurement, photo measurement, and three-dimensional scanning measurement. Among them, the subjective evaluation is simple, but the reliability is poor, and this method is suitable for all patients with cleft lip. The direct measurement has a low cost and is only suitable for one-dimensional information measurement, but the accuracy is poor, so it is difficult to determine the endpoints. The time of the photo measurement method is short, which can avoid tissue deformation, but it is easy to produce errors; this method is suitable for patients with cleft lip who can cooperate. The three-dimensional scanning measurement has a high accuracy, is time consuming and is a simple method but has a high cost and is suitable for areas with appropriate equipment conditions. Overall, the evaluation of the postoperative effect of cleft lip surgery should combine subjective evaluation with objective evaluation, dynamic evaluation with static evaluation, and utilize long-term follow-up to obtain comprehensive and accurate information and provide a reference for clinicians to carry out cleft lip surgery.

Abstract

In this paper, we study the effects of parity violation on non-gaussianities of primordial gravitational waves in the framework of Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz theory of gravity, in which high-order spatial derivative operators, including the ones violating parity, generically appear. By calculating the three point function, we find that the leading-order contributions to the non-gaussianities come from the usual second-order derivative terms, which produce the same bispectrum as that found in general relativity. The contributions from high-order spatial n-th derivative terms are always suppressed by a factor $(H/M_*)^{n-2} \; (n \ge 3)$, where $H$ denotes the inflationary energy and $M_*$ the suppression mass scale of the high-order spatial derivative operators of the theory. Therefore, the next leading-order contributions come from the 3-dimensional gravitational Chern-Simons term. Abstract

In this paper, we study 3-point correlation function of primordial gravitational waves generated in the de Sitter background in the framework of the general covariant Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity with an arbitrary coupling constant $\lambda$. We find that, at cubic order, the interaction Hamiltonian receives contributions from four terms built of the 3-dimensional Ricci tensor $R_{ij}$ of the leaves $t = $ constant. In particular, the 3D Ricci scalar $R$ yields the same $k$-dependence as that in general relativity, but with different magnitude due to coupling with the $U(1)$ field $A$ and a UV history. Interestingly, the two terms $R_{ij}R^{ij}$ and $\left(\nabla^{i}R^{jk}\right)\left(\nabla_{i}R_{jk}\right)$ exhibit peaks at the squeezed limit. We show that this is due to the effects of the polarization tensors. The signal generated by the fourth term, $R^i_j R^j_k R^k_i$, favors the equilateral shape when spins of the three tensor fields are the same, but peaks in between the equilateral and squeezed limits when spins are mixed. The consistency with the recently-released Planck observations on non-Gaussianity is also discussed and is found that $\left(H/M_*\right)^2\left(H/M_{pl}\right) \le 10^{-8}$, where $M_{*}$ denotes the suppression energy of high-order operators, $M_{pl}$ the Planck mass, and $H$ the energy of inflation., Comment: revtex4, 16 figures. Abstract

In this paper, we study non-Gaussianity generated by a single scalar field in slow-roll inflation in the framework of the non-relativistic general covariant Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz theory of gravity with the projectability condition and an arbitrary coupling constant $\lambda$, where $\lambda$ characterizes the deviation of the theory from general relativity (GR) in the infrared. We find that the leading effect of self-interaction, in contrary to the case of minimal scenario of GR, is in general of the order $\hat{\alpha}_{n} \epsilon^{3/2}$, where $\epsilon$ is a slow-roll parameter, and $\hat{\alpha}_{n} (n = 3, 5)$ are the dimensionless coupling coefficients of the six-order operators of the Lifshitz scalar, and have no contributions to power spectra and indices of both scalar and tensor. The bispectrum, comparing with the standard one given in GR, is enhanced, and gives rise to a large value of the nonlinearity parameter $f_{\text{NL}}$.We study how the modified dispersion relation with high order moment terms affects the evaluation of the mode function and in turn the bispectrum, and show explicitly that the mode function takes various asymptotic forms during different periods of its evolution. In particular, we find that it is in general of superpositions of oscillatory functions, instead of plane waves like in the minimal scenario of GR.
