AgCrSe$_2$ is an example of a super-ionic conductor that has recently attracted attention for its low thermal conductivity. Here we investigate the optical properties of AgCrSe$_2$ in the ordered phase between 14 K and 374 K using reflectivity experiments. The far infrared optical response is dominated by three phonon modes, while six interband transitions are observed in the visible range. From our analysis we find that the phonon parameters display an interesting temperature dependence around the N\'eel temperature, pointing to a small magneto-elastic coupling. In addition, the lifetimes of the modes indicate that three-phonon processes dominate and the optical phonons decay into low energy acoustic modes involved in the super-ionic transition. Finally, we detect a small free charge carrier response through the analysis of Fabry-Perot interference fringes in our reflectivity data., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

The cuprate high-temperature superconductors exhibit many unexplained electronic phases, but it was often thought that the superconductivity at sufficiently high doping is governed by conventional mean-field Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory[1]. However, recent measurements show that the number of paired electrons (the superfluid density) vanishes when the transition temperature Tc goes to zero[2], in contradiction to expectation from BCS theory. The origin of this anomalous vanishing is unknown. Our scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements in the overdoped regime of the (Pb,Bi)2Sr2CuO6+{\delta} high-temperature superconductor show that it is due to the emergence of puddled superconductivity, featuring nanoscale superconducting islands in a metallic matrix[3,4]. Our measurements further reveal that this puddling is driven by gap filling, while the gap itself persists beyond the breakdown of superconductivity. The important implication is that it is not a diminishing pairing interaction that causes the breakdown of superconductivity. Unexpectedly, the measured gap-to-filling correlation also reveals that pair-breaking by disorder does not play a dominant role and that the mechanism of superconductivity in overdoped cuprate superconductors is qualitatively different from conventional mean-field theory.

Unlocking the mystery of the strange metal state has become the focal point of high T$_{c}$ research, not because of its importance for superconductivity, but because it appears to represent a truly novel phase of matter dubbed `quantum supreme matter'. Detected originally through high magnetic field, transport experiments, signatures of this phase have now been uncovered with a variety of probes. Our high resolution optical data of the low T$_{c}$ cuprate superconductor, Bi$_{2-x}$Pb$_{x}$Sr$_{2-y}$La$_{y}$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ allows us to probe this phase over a large energy and temperature window. We demonstrate that the optical signatures of the strange metal phase persist throughout the phase diagram. The strange metal signatures in the optical conductivity are two-fold, (i): a low energy Drude response with Drude width on the order of temperature and (ii): a high energy conformal tail with doping dependent power-law exponent. While the Drude weight evolves monotonously throughout the entire doping range studied, the spectral weight contained in the high energy conformal tail appears to be doping and temperature independent. Our analysis further shows that the temperature dependence of the optical conductivity is completely determined by the Drude parameters. Our results indicate that there is no critical doping level inside the superconducting dome where the carrier density starts to change drastically and that the previously observed 'return to normalcy' is a consequence of the increasing importance of the Drude component relative to the conformal tail with doping. The transition metal dichalcogenide PdTe$_2$ has attractive features based on its classification as a type-II Dirac semimetal and the occurrence of type-I superconductivity, providing a platform for discussion of a topological superconductor. Our recent work revealed that type-I superconductivity persists up to pressures of $\sim2.5$ GPa and the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ reaches a maximum at around 1 GPa, which is inconsistent with the theoretical prediction. To understand its non-monotonic variation and investigate superconductivity at higher pressures, we performed structural analysis by x-ray diffraction at room temperature below 8 GPa and electrical resistivity measurements at low temperatures from 1 to 8 GPa. With regard to the superconductivity beyond 1 GPa, the monotonic decrease in $T_{\rm c}$ is reproduced without any noticeable anomalies; $T_{\rm c}$ changes from 1.8 K at 1 GPa to 0.82 K at 5.5 GPa with $dT_{\rm c}/dP\sim-0.22$ K/GPa. The crystal structure with spacegroup $P$\={3}$m$1 is stable in the pressure range we examined. On the other hand, the normalized pressure-strain analysis (finite strain analysis) indicates that the compressibility changes around 1 GPa, suggesting that a Lifshitz transition occurs. We here discuss the effect of pressure on the superconducting and structural properties based on the comparison of these experimental results.

Using inelastic x-ray scattering beyond the dipole limit and hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we establish the dual nature of the U $5f$ electrons in UM$_2$Si$_2$ (M = Pd, Ni, Ru, Fe), regardless of their degree of delocalization. We have observed that the compounds have in common a local atomic-like state that is well described by the U $5f^2$ configuration with the $\Gamma_1^{(1)}$ and $\Gamma_2$ quasi-doublet symmetry. The amount of the U 5$f^3$ configuration, however, varies considerably across the UM$_2$Si$_2$ series, indicating an increase of U5$f$ itineracy in going from M=Pd to Ni to Ru, and to the Fe compound. The identified electronic states explain the formation of the very large ordered magnetic moments in UPd$_2$Si$_2$ and UNi$_2$Si$_2$, the availability of orbital degrees of freedom needed for the hidden order in URu$_2$Si$_2$ to occur, as well as the appearance of Pauli paramagnetism in UFe$_2$Si$_2$. A unified and systematic picture of the U$M_2$Si$_2$ compounds may now be drawn, thereby providing suggestions for new experiments to induce hidden order and/or superconductivity in U compounds with the tetragonal body-centered ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure.

We present optical measurements of the transition metal dichalcogenide PdTe$_{2}$. The reflectivity displays an unusual temperature and energy dependence in the far-infrared, which we show can only be explained by a collapse of the scattering rate at low temperature, resulting from the vicinity of a van Hove singularity near the Fermi energy. An analysis of the optical conductivity suggests that below 150 K a reduction in the available phase space for scattering takes place, resulting in long-lived quasiparticle excitations. We suggest that this reduction in phase space provides experimental evidence for a van Hove singularity close to the Fermi level. Our data furthermore indicates a very weak electron-phonon coupling. Combined this suggests that the superconducting transition temperature is set by the density of states associated with the van Hove singularity., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The Dirac semimetal PdTe$_2$ was recently reported to be a type-I superconductor with $T_c = 1.64$ K and a critical field $\mu_0H_c = 13.6$ mT. Since type-I superconductivity is unexpected for binary compounds, we have conducted muon spin rotation experiments to probe the superconducting phase on the microscopic scale via its intermediate state. For crystals with a finite demagnetization factor, $N$, the intermediate state forms in applied fields $(1-N)H_c < H_a < H_c$. We have carried out transverse field muon spin rotation measurements on a thin disk-like crystal with the field perpendicular to ($N_{\perp}=0.86$) and in the plane ($N_{\parallel}=0.08$) of the disk. By analysing the $\mu$SR signal we find that the volume fraction of the normal domains grows quasi-linearly with applied field at the expense of the Meissner domain fraction. This then provides solid evidence for the intermediate state and type-I superconductivity in the bulk of PdTe$_2$.

Complex oxide thin films and heterostructures exhibit a profusion of exotic phenomena, often resulting from the intricate interplay between film and substrate. Recently it has become possible to isolate epitaxially grown single-crystalline layers of these materials, enabling the study of their properties in the absence of interface effects. In this work, we create ultrathin membranes of strongly correlated materials and demonstrate top-down fabrication of nanomechanical resonators made out of \ce{SrTiO3} and \ce{SrRuO3}. Using laser interferometry, we successfully actuate and measure the motion of the nanodrum resonators. By measuring their temperature-dependent mechanical response, we observe signatures of structural phase transitions in \ce{SrTiO3}, which affect the strain and mechanical dissipation in the resonators. This approach can be extended to investigate phase transitions in a wide range of materials. Our study demonstrates the feasibility of integrating ultrathin complex oxide membranes for realizing nanoelectromechanical systems on arbitrary substrates.

The field of topological materials science has recently been focussing on three-dimensional Dirac semimetals, which exhibit robust Dirac phases in the bulk. However, the absence of characteristic surface states in accidental Dirac semimetals (DSM) makes it difficult to experimentally verify claims about the topological nature using commonly used surface-sensitive techniques. The chiral magnetic effect (CME), which originates from the Weyl nodes, causes an $\textbf{E}\cdot\textbf{B}$-dependent chiral charge polarization, which manifests itself as negative magnetoresistance. We exploit the extended lifetime of the chirally polarized charge and study the CME through both local and non-local measurements in Hall bar structures fabricated from single crystalline flakes of the DSM Bi$_{0.97}$Sb$_{0.03}$. From the non-local measurement results we find a chiral charge relaxation time which is over one order of magnitude larger than the Drude transport lifetime, underlining the topological nature of Bi$_{0.97}$Sb$_{0.03}$., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures + 7 pages of supplemental material

We have fabricated superconductor-normal metal side-junctions with different barrier transparencies out of PdTe$_2$ crystalline flakes and measured the differential conductance spectra. Modeling our measurements using a modified Blonder Tinkham Klapwijk (BTK) formalism confirms that the superconductivity is mostly comprised of the conventional $s$-wave symmetry. We have found that for junctions with very low barrier transparencies, the junctions can enter a thermal regime, where the critical current becomes important. Adding this to the BTK-model allows us to accurately fit the experimental data, from which we conclude that the superconductivity in the $a$-$b$ plane of PdTe$_2$ is dominated by conventional $s$-wave pairing., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, supplementary info

One of the consequences of Cooper pairs having a finite momentum in the interlayer of a Josephson junction, is $\pi$-junction behavior. The finite momentum can either be due to an exchange field in ferromagnetic Josephson junctions, or due to the Zeeman effect. Here, we report the observation of Zeeman effect induced 0-$\pi$ transitions in Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$, 3D Dirac semimetal-based Josephson junctions. The large g-factor of the Zeeman effect from a magnetic field applied in the plane of the junction allows tuning of the Josephson junctions from 0- to $\pi$- regimes. This is revealed by sign changes in the modulation of the critical current by applied magnetic field of an asymmetric superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). Additionally, we directly measure a non-sinusoidal current-phase relation in the asymmetric SQUID, consistent with models for ballistic Josephson transport.

The quantum Hall effect is studied in the topological insulator BiSbTeSe$_2$. By employing top- and back-gate electric fields at high magnetic field, the Landau levels of the Dirac cones in the top and bottom topological surface states can be tuned independently. When one surface is tuned to the electron-doped side of the Dirac cone and the other surface to the hole-doped side, the quantum Hall edge channels are counter-propagating. The opposite edge mode direction, combined with the opposite helicities of top and bottom surfaces, allows for scattering between these counter-propagating edge modes. The total Hall conductance is integer valued only when the scattering is strong. For weaker interaction, a non-integer quantum Hall effect is expected and measured.

The combination of superconductivity and the helical spin-momentum locking at the surface state of a topological insulator (TI) has been predicted to give rise to p-wave superconductivity and Majorana bound states. The superconductivity can be induced by the proximity effect of a an s-wave superconductor (S) into the TI. To probe the superconducting correlations inside the TI, dI/dV spectroscopy has been performed across such S-TI interfaces. Both the alloyed Bi$_{1.5}$Sb$_{0.5}$Te$_{1.7}$Se$_{1.3}$ and the stoichiometric BiSbTeSe$_2$ have been used as three dimensional TI. In the case of Bi$_{1.5}$Sb$_{0.5}$Te$_{1.7}$Se$_{1.3}$, the presence of disorder induced electron-electron interactions can give rise to an additional zero-bias resistance peak. For the stoichiometric BiSbTeSe$_2$ with less disorder, tunnel barriers were employed in order to enhance the signal from the interface. The general observations in the spectra of a large variety of samples are conductance dips at the induced gap voltage, combined with an increased sub-gap conductance, consistent with p-wave predictions. The induced gap voltage is typically smaller than the gap of the Nb superconducting electrode, especially in the presence of an intentional tunnel barrier. Electrons in a Dirac semimetals possess linear dispersion in all three spatial dimensions, and form part of a developing platform of novel quantum materials. Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$ supports a three-dimensional Dirac cone at the Sb-induced band inversion point. Nanoscale phase-sensitive junction technology is used to induce superconductivity in this Dirac semimetal. Radio frequency irradiation experiments reveal a significant contribution of 4$\pi$-periodic Andreev bound states to the supercurrent in Nb-Bi$_{0.97}$Sb$_{0.03}$-Nb Josephson junctions. The conditions for a substantial $4\pi$ contribution to the supercurrent are favourable because of the Dirac cone's topological protection against backscattering, providing very broad transmission resonances. The second-order phase transition into a hidden order phase in URu$_2$Si$_2$ goes along with an order parameter which is still a mystery, despite 30 years of research. However, it is understood that the symmetry of the order parameter must be related to the symmetry of the low lying local electronic $f$-states. Here we present results of a novel spectroscopy, namely core-level non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS). This method allows for the measurement of local high-multipole excitations and it is bulk sensitive. The observed anisotropy of the scattering function unambiguously shows that the 5$f$ ground state wave function is composed mainly, but essentially not purely, of the $\Gamma_1$ with majority $J_z$ =$|4\rangle$ + $|-4\rangle$ and/or $\Gamma_2$ singlet states., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

There are two prerequisites for understanding high-temperature (high-T$_c$) superconductivity: identifying the pairing interaction and a correct description of the normal state from which superconductivity emerges. The nature of the normal state of iron-pnictide superconductors, and the role played by correlations arising from partially screened interactions, are still under debate. Here we show that the normal state of carefully annealed electron-doped BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_{x}$As$_2$ at low temperatures has all the hallmark properties of a local Fermi liquid, with a more incoherent state emerging at elevated temperatures, an identification made possible using bulk-sensitive optical spectroscopy with high frequency and temperature resolution. The frequency dependent scattering rate extracted from the optical conductivity deviates from the expected scaling $M_{2}(\omega,T)\propto(\hbar\omega)^{2}+(p\pi k_{B}T)^{2}$ with $p\approx$ 1.47 rather than $p$ = 2, indicative of the presence of residual elastic resonant scattering. Excellent agreement between the experimental results and theoretical modeling allows us to extract the characteristic Fermi liquid scale $T_{0}\approx$ 1700 K. Our results show that the electron-doped iron-pnictides should be regarded as weakly correlated Fermi liquids with a weak mass enhancement resulting from residual electron-electron scattering from thermally excited quasi-particles., Comment: 6+9pages, 3+9 figures To be published in Scientific Reports

In an ideal 3D topological insulator (TI), the bulk is insulating and the surface conducting due to the existence of metallic states that are localized on the surface; these are the topological surface states. Quaternary Bi-based compounds of Bi$_{2-x}$Sb$_{x}$Te$_{3-y}$Se$_{y}$ with finely-tuned bulk stoichiometries are good candidates for realizing ideal 3D TI behavior due to their bulk insulating character. However, despite its insulating bulk in transport experiments, the surface region of Bi$_{2-x}$Sb$_{x}$Te$_{3-y}$Se$_{y}$ crystals cleaved in ultrahigh vacuum also exhibits occupied states originating from the bulk conduction band. This is due to adsorbate-induced downward band-bending, a phenomenon known from other Bi-based 3D TIs. Here we show, using angle-resolved photoemission, how an EUV light beam of moderate flux can be used to exclude these topologically trivial states from the Fermi level of Bi$_{1.46}$Sb$_{0.54}$Te$_{1.7}$Se$_{1.3}$ single crystals, thereby re-establishing the purely topological character of the low lying electronic states of the system. We furthermore prove that this process is highly local in nature in this bulk-insulating TI, and are thus able to imprint structures in the spatial energy landscape at the surface. We report high resolution Angle Resolved PhotoElectron Spectroscopy (ARPES) results on the (001) cleavage surface of YbB$_{6}$, a rare-earth compound which has been recently predicted to host surface electronic states with topological character. We observe two types of well-resolved metallic states, whose Fermi contours encircle the time-reversal invariant momenta of the YbB$_{6}$(001) surface Brillouin zone, and whose full (E,$k$)-dispersion relation can be measured wholly unmasked by states from the rest of the electronic structure. Although the two-dimensional character of these metallic states is confirmed by their lack of out-of-plane dispersion, two new aspects are revealed in these experiments. Firstly, these states do not resemble two branches of opposite, linear velocity that cross at a Dirac point, but rather straightforward parabolas which terminate to high binding energy with a clear band bottom. Secondly, these states are sensitive to time-dependent changes of the YbB$_{6}$ surface under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Adding the fact that these data from cleaved YbB$_{6}$ surfaces also display spatial variations in the electronic structure, it appears there is little in common between the theoretical expectations for an idealized YbB$_{6}$(001) crystal truncation on the one hand, and these ARPES data from real cleavage surfaces on the other., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures (accepted in Physical Review B)

Low energy electron diffraction (LEED) experiments, LEED simulations and finite slab density functional calculations are combined to study the cleavage surface of Co doped BaFe_{2-x}Co_{x}As_{2} (x = 0.1, 0.17). We demonstrate that the energy dependence of the LEED data can only be understood from a terminating 1/2 Ba layer accompanied by distortions of the underlying As-Fe_2-As block. As a result, surface related Fe 3d states are present in the electronic structure, which we identify in angle resolved photoemission experiments. The close proximity of the surface-related states to the bulk bands inevitably leads to broadening of the ARPES signals, which excludes the use of the BaFe_{2-x}Co_{x}As_{2} system for accurate determination of self-energies using ARPES., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures includes supplementary material

Heavy electronic states originating from the f atomic orbitals underlie a rich variety of quantum phases of matter. We use atomic scale imaging and spectroscopy with the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) to examine the novel electronic states that emerge from the uranium f states in URu2Si2. We find that as the temperature is lowered, partial screening of the f electrons' spins gives rise to a spatially modulated Kondo-Fano resonance that is maximal between the surface U atoms. At T=17.5 K, URu2Si2 is known to undergo a 2nd order phase transition from the Kondo lattice state into a phase with a hidden order parameter. From tunneling spectroscopy, we identify a spatially modulated, bias-asymmetric energy gap with a mean-field temperature dependence that develops in the hidden order state. Spectroscopic imaging further reveals a spatial correlation between the hidden order gap and the Kondo resonance, suggesting that the two phenomena involve the same electronic states.
