The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of students' science learning in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) at one elementary school in Taiwan. This study investigated student perceptions of both the content and language achievement of science learning in CLIL. Data collection techniques included graphic organizers, individual interviews, students' self-assessment, and students' tests. Findings showed that CLIL helped enrich student vocabulary size, foster student science knowledge, and lead them to expect to learn other subjects in English. They also enjoyed the CLIL approach, but expressed limited knowledge about the school flower.

Simulation technique could be effective if it is cleverly manipulated and incorporated in a project-based learning context. This current study aims to explore students' learning experience in a project-based simulated business context. The participants were 51 second and third year students who took Business English as an elective course at a private university in central Taiwan. In the project, the participants modeled an episode in a reality TV show, The Apprentice, and tried to plan their projects of selling beverages to the students on campus using English. The students were engaged in the whole process from initial project planning to the final oral report of presenting their selling strategies. The results from the participants' questionnaire responses and interview data revealed that they felt the course was more motivating, interactive and practical than traditional business course. It is also suggested that this simulated business project provide students with opportunities for social interaction and a psychologically safe team environment to work collaboratively, which both contributed the development in synergistic knowledge.

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of the digital material incorporated into Text-to- Speech system for students' English spelling. The digital material was made on the basis of the Spelling Bee vocabulary list (approximately 300 words) issued by the selected school. 21 third graders from a private bilingual school in Taiwan were selected for this study. This study employed four data collection techniques, including questionnaire, pre-test and post-test, informal observation and interview, and semi-structured individual interviews. The research results showed that the use of digital material fostered the students' English spelling ability and their self-directed learning.

BackgroundDevelopment of neural and vascular systems displays astonishing similarities among vertebrates. This parallelism is under a precise control of complex guidance signals and neurovascular interactions. Previously, our group identified a highly conserved neural protein called thrombospondin type I domain containing 7A (THSD7A). Soluble THSD7A promoted and guided endothelial cell migration, tube formation and sprouting. In addition, we showed that thsd7a could be detected in the nervous system and was required for intersegmental vessels (ISV) patterning during zebrafish development. However, the exact origin of THSD7A and its effect on neurovascular interaction remains unclear.ResultsIn this study, we discovered that zebrafish thsd7a was expressed in the primary motor neurons. Knockdown of Thsd7a disrupted normal primary motor neuron formation and ISV sprouting in the Tg(kdr:EGFP/mnx1:TagRFP) double transgenic zebrafish. Interestingly, we found that Thsd7a morphants displayed distinct phenotypes that are very similar to the loss of Notch-delta like 4 (dll4) signaling. Transcript profiling further revealed that expression levels of notch1b and its downstream targets, vegfr2/3 and nrarpb, were down-regulated in the Thsd7a morphants. These data supported that zebrafish Thsd7a could regulate angiogenic sprouting via Notch-dll4 signaling during development.ConclusionsOur results suggested that motor neuron-derived Thsd7a plays a significant role in neurovascular interactions. Thsd7a could regulate ISV angiogenesis via Notch-dll4 signaling. Thus, Thsd7a is a potent angioneurin involved in the development of both neural and vascular systems.

Quantitative carbohydrate analysis faces challenges in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), including insufficient sensitivity and inconsistent spatial distribution of ion intensity. This study introduces an innovative sample preparation approach, the Rapidly Freeze-Drying Droplet (RFDD) method, aimed at overcoming these challenges by enhancing the homogeneity of the sample morphology and signal intensity in MALDI. Compared to conventional preparation methods, the RFDD method reduces the laser energy threshold and demonstrates a remarkable increase in signal intensity for carbohydrates, facilitating the detection of high-molecular-weight polysaccharides (>10 kDa). The RFDD-prepared samples exhibit a uniformly distributed signal intensity that overcomes the 'sweet spot' issue in MALDI. The enhanced signal intensity and reproducibility lead to reliable quantitative analysis of carbohydrates, eliminating the need for expensive isotopic standards in each sample. A straightforward and accessible approach is presented for general laboratories, revolutionizing carbohydrate analysis in MALDI-MS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of an exercise education intervention on exercise behavior, depression and fatigue status of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Design/methodology/approach: This was a pilot study using an exercise education program as an intervention for CKD patients. The authors used the transtheoretical model (TTM) to design the exercise education programs. A total of 94 subjects diagnosed with CKD at a medical center in Taiwan participated in this quasi-experimental study. Subjects were randomly divided into the experimental group (n=45) and the control group (n=49). The education program included written materials and teaching activities designed to encourage participants to initiate and continue regular exercise. Both groups took the pre-test and post-test containing a depression inventory, a fatigue scale and an exercise behavior inventory. Findings: The findings indicated that changes in the exercise behavior, depression and fatigue status of the experimental group were statistically significant after the exercise education intervention compared with the control group. Originality/value: The paper demonstrates that exercise education intervention can be administered by nursing staff, or a health educator, to encourage patients to exercise in order to enhance their quality of care. The purpose of this qualitative research was to understand the perceptions of Taiwanese teachers of the effects of a study group on their professional growth in the workplace. This case study employed the following data collection techniques: (1) informal observations and interviews, (2) focus group interview, (3) semi-structured individual interviews and (4) documents and records. The site selected for this study was the National Chia-Yi Girls' Senior High School in Chia-Yi City in Taiwan. The participants in this study included eight members of the English Teachers Club. Although the focus of this club was offering opportunities for members to practice and improve their English, it functioned as a teacher study group. Specifically, the reported benefits of this professional development activity included: learning English as a foreign language, gaining ideas for improving classroom English instruction, sharing teaching experiences, stimulating positive dispositions to learning, and fostering intellectual development. These benefits, I argue, helped participants to develop content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, fostering of continuing learning, and cognitive/intellectual and theoretical development. The experiences of the teacher study group at Chia-Yi Girls' Senior High School revealed some of the successes and problems that the teachers experienced as their involvement in a study group evolved.

Background: Clinical trials have demonstrated that the 21-gene assay (Oncotype DX) can predict the benefits of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with hormone receptor-positive (HR+) and human epidermal growth factor 2-negative (HER2−) breast cancer. This study investigated the real-world utilization of this genomic test in Taiwanese patients. Materials and Methods: We compiled data on the recurrence score (RS) and clinicopathological characteristics of patients who received the 21-gene assay between August 2016 and August 2021. Survival outcomes were analyzed using the Kaplan–Meier method and log-rank test. Correlations between clinicopathological characteristics and RSs were analyzed using the Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test. Results: Of the 106 recruited patients, 34 and 72 were classified into different risk groups using conventional and Trial Assigning Individualized Options for Treatment (TAILORx)-based cutoff points, respectively. In the conventional stratification group, 61.8%, 29.4%, and 8.8% of the patients were classified into the low-risk (RS: 0–17), intermediate-risk (RS: 18–30), and high-risk (RS: 31–100) categories, respectively. In the TAILORx stratification group, 18.1%, 72.2%, and 9.7% of the patients were classified into the low-risk (RS: 0–10), intermediate-risk (RS: 11–25), and high-risk (RS: 26–100) categories, respectively. In survival analysis, recurrence-free survival did not significantly differ among discrete risk categories. The high-risk category determined using TAILORx-based cutoff points was associated with the presence of >14% Ki-67-positive cells (P = 0.004) and tumor histology Grade III (P = 0.001). Conclusion: Using the Oncotype DX assay, we classified a small proportion of our Taiwanese patients into the high-risk category; no survival difference was observed among the patients in distinct risk categories. These results suggest the clinical utility of the 21-gene assay in Taiwanese patients with early HR+/HER2−breast cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
