1. Analytic analysis of the worst-case complexity of the gradient method with exact line search and the Polyak stepsize

Abstract

We give a novel analytic analysis of the worst-case complexity of the gradient method with exact line search and the Polyak stepsize, respectively, which previously could only be established by computer-assisted proof. Our analysis is based on studying the linear convergence of a family of gradient methods, whose stepsizes include the one determined by exact line search and the Polyak stepsize as special instances. The asymptotic behavior of the considered family is also investigated which shows that the gradient method with the Polyak stepsize will zigzag in a two-dimensional subspace spanned by the two eigenvectors corresponding to the largest and smallest eigenvalues of the Hessian., Comment: 15 pages

2. ViboPneumo: A Vibratory-Pneumatic Finger-Worn Haptic Device for Altering Perceived Texture Roughness in Mixed Reality

Abstract

Extensive research has been done in haptic feedback for texture simulation in virtual reality (VR). However, it is challenging to modify the perceived tactile texture of existing physical objects which usually serve as anchors for virtual objects in mixed reality (MR). In this paper, we present ViboPneumo, a finger-worn haptic device that uses vibratory-pneumatic feedback to modulate (i.e., increase and decrease) the perceived roughness of the material surface contacted by the user's fingerpad while supporting the perceived sensation of other haptic properties (e.g., temperature or stickiness) in MR. Our device includes a silicone-based pneumatic actuator that can lift the user's fingerpad on the physical surface to reduce the contact area for roughness decreasing, and an on-finger vibrator for roughness increasing. Our user-perception experimental results showed that the participants could perceive changes in roughness, both increasing and decreasing, compared to the original material surface. We also observed the overlapping roughness ratings among certain haptic stimuli (i.e., vibrotactile and pneumatic) and the originally perceived roughness of some materials without any haptic feedback. This suggests the potential to alter the perceived texture of one type of material to another in terms of roughness (e.g., modifying the perceived texture of ceramics as glass). Lastly, a user study of MR experience showed that ViboPneumo could significantly improve the MR user experience, particularly for visual-haptic matching, compared to the condition of a bare finger. Abstract

Under investigation in this paper is the fractional integrable and non-integrable discrete modified Korteweg-de Vries hierarchies. The linear dispersion relations, completeness relations, inverse scattering transform, and fractional soliton solutions of the fractional integrable discrete modified Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy will be explored. The inverse scattering problem will be solved accurately by using Gel'fand-Levitan-Marchenko (GLM) equations and Riemann-Hilbert (RH) problem. The peak velocity of fractional soliton solutions will be analyzed. The numerical solutions of the non-integrable fractional averaged discrete modified Korteweg-de Vries equation which has a simpler form than the integrable one will be obtained by a split-step fourier method.

4. The Effect of a Name-Based Mask Rationing Plan in Taiwan on Public Anxiety Regarding a Mask Shortage During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Observational Study

Abstract

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic is a severe global health crisis. Wearing a mask is a straightforward action that can be taken, but shortage of stock and equity of allocation were important issues in Taiwan. Furthermore, increased anxiety leading to the stockpiling of masks has been common during the pandemic. ObjectiveWe aim to summarize the name-based mask rationing plan implemented in Taiwan and explore the public’s perceived anxiety about mask shortages. MethodsThe government of Taiwan took action to control the supply and allocation of face masks. We summarize the timeline and important components of the mask rationing plan. A survey that aimed to investigate the overall response to the mask rationing plan was answered by 44 participants. ResultsThe mask rationing plan was implemented in late January 2020. Daily production capacity was increased from 2 million masks to 16 million masks in April 2020. People could buy 9 masks in 14 days by verification via their National Health Insurance card. Digital face mask availability maps were created. Moreover, the mask plan safeguarded the purchase of masks and resulted in decreased anxiety about a mask shortage (4.05 [SD 1.15] points; 72.7% [n=32] of participants answered “agree” or “strongly agree”). The majority of people felt that the mask plan was satisfactory (4.2 [SD 0.92] points; 79.5% [n=35] of participants answered “agree” or “strongly agree”). ConclusionsWe found that the unique name-based mask rationing plan allowed for control of the production and supply of masks, and contributed to the appropriate allocation of masks. The mask rationing plan not only provided the public with physical protection, but also resulted in reduced anxiety about mask shortages during the pandemic.

Abstract

In the process of grain storage, the use of low-temperature grain storage technology can effectively reduce grain losses during storage and ensure grain quality, which is of great significance for maintaining a stable grain supply. Radiative cooling materials, as a new energy-free cooling technology, achieve cooling by radiating heat in the form of electromagnetic waves into outer space. This approach can address issues associated with traditional cooling methods, such as high energy consumption and high chemical oxygen demand (COD) emissions, offering a green and environmentally friendly new approach to low-temperature grain storage. This paper explained the working principle of polymer-based radiative cooling materials and systematically introduced the composition and selection criteria of polymer-based radiative cooling systems. It also categorized and summarized polymer-based radiative cooling materials according to their structural characteristics. The existing problems with different structured radiative cooling materials, as well as future research directions, were also analyzed. This provides a certain research framework for applying radiative cooling materials to grain storage facilities to achieve low-temperature grain storage.

Abstract

Background Microalbuminuria is a sensitive indicator of early renal microvascular damage and an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Previous studies have shown that long-term chronic inflammation plays an important role in the occurrence and development of microalbuminuria. However, the correlation between blood inflammatory markers and microalbuminuria has been less frequently reported. Objective To investigate the correlation of systemic immune inflammatory index (SII) and systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) with microalbuminuria in a middle-aged and elderly physical examination population. Methods This was a cross-sectional study in which 2 105 medical examiners over the age of 40 years who underwent health check-ups from April to July 2023 at the Department of Health Medicine, General Hospital of the Eastern Theatre of Operations were selected as study subjects. The study subjects were divided into two groups based on the urinary microalbumin/urinary creatinine ratio (UACR) values: the non-microalbuminuric group (1 857 cases, UACR0.05) ; age, BMI, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, 2 h blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, triglycerides, homocysteine, glomerular filtration rate erythrocyte sedimentation rate, SII, and SIRI levels were higher in the microalbuminuria group than those in the non-microalbuminuria group, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol level was lower than that in the non-microalbuminuria group (P

39. A primal-dual majorization-minimization method for large-scale linear programs

Abstract

We present a primal-dual majorization-minimization method for solving large-scale linear programs. A smooth barrier augmented Lagrangian (SBAL) function with strict convexity for the dual linear program is derived. The majorization-minimization approach is naturally introduced to develop the smoothness and convexity of the SBAL function. Our method only depends on a factorization of the constant matrix independent of iterations and does not need any computation on step sizes, thus can be expected to be particularly appropriate for large-scale linear programs. The method shares some similar properties to the first-order methods for linear programs, but its convergence analysis is established on the differentiability and convexity of our SBAL function. The global convergence is analyzed without prior requiring either the primal or dual linear program to be feasible. Abstract

BACKGROUND: The Editorial Board of EJNMMI Radiopharmacy and Chemistry releases a biannual highlight commentary to update the readership on trends in the field of radiopharmaceutical development. MAIN BODY: This commentary of highlights has resulted in 21 different topics selected by each coauthoring Editorial Board member addressing a variety of aspects ranging from novel radiochemistry to first in man application of novel radiopharmaceuticals. CONCLUSION: Trends in radiochemistry and radiopharmacy are highlighted demonstrating the progress in the research field in various topics including new PET-labelling methods, FAPI-tracers and imaging, and radionuclide therapy being the scope of EJNMMI Radiopharmacy and Chemistry.
