Search

Neurons convert the external stimuli into action potentials, or spikes, and encode the contained information into the biological nerve system. Despite the complexity of neurons and the synaptic interactions in between, the rate models are often adapted to describe neural encoding with modest success. However, it is not clear whether the firing rate, the reciprocal of the time interval between spikes, is sufficient to capture the essential feature for the neuronal dynamics. Going beyond the usual relaxation dynamics in Ginzburg-Landau theory for statistical systems, we propose the neural activities can be captured by the U(1) dynamics, integrating the action potential and the ``phase" of the neuron together. The gain function of the Hodgkin-Huxley neuron and the corresponding dynamical phase transitions can be described within the U(1) neuron framework. In addition, the phase dependence of the synaptic interactions is illustrated and the mapping to the Kinouchi-Copelli neuron is established. The fidelity susceptibility has been used to detect quantum phase transitions in the Hermitian quantum many-body systems over a decade, where the fidelity susceptibility density approaches $+\infty$ in the thermodynamic limits. Here the fidelity susceptibility $\chi$ is generalized to non-Hermitian quantum systems by taking the geometric structure of the Hilbert space into consideration. Instead of solving the metric equation of motion from scratch, we chose a gauge where the fidelities are composed of biorthogonal eigenstates and can be worked out algebraically or numerically when not on the exceptional point (EP). Due to the properties of the Hilbert space geometry at EP, we found that EP can be found when $\chi$ approaches $-\infty$. As examples, we investigate the simplest $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric $2\times2$ Hamiltonian with a single tuning parameter and the non-Hermitian Su-Schriffer-Heeger model., Comment: 2 figures

Cold atom experiments can now realize mixtures where different components move in different spatial dimensions. We investigate a fermion mixture where one species is constrained to move along a one-dimensional lattice embedded in a two-dimensional lattice populated by another species of fermions, and where all bare interactions are contact interactions. By focusing on the one-dimensional fermions, we map this problem onto a model of fermions with non-local interactions on a chain. The effective interaction is mediated by the two-dimensional fermions and is both attractive and retarded, the form of which can be varied by changing the density of the two-dimensional fermions. By using the functional renormalization group in the weak-coupling and adiabatic limit, we show that the one-dimensional fermions can be controlled to be in various density-wave, or spin-singlet or triplet superconducting phases., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We investigate the effect of electron-phonon coupling on low temperature phases in metallic single-wall carbon nanotubes. We obtain low-temperature phase diagrams of armchair and zigzag type nanotubes with screened interactions with a weak-coupling renormalization group approach. In the absence of electron-phonon coupling, two types of nanotubes have similar phase diagrams. A $D$-Mott phase or $d$-wave superconductivity appears when the on-site interaction is dominant, while a charge-density wave or an excitonic insulator phase emerges when the nearest neighbor interaction becomes comparable to the on-site interaction. The electron-phonon coupling, treated by a two-cutoff scaling scheme, leads to different behavior in two types of nanotubes. For strong electron-phonon interactions, phonon softening is induced and a Peierls insulator phase appears in armchair nanotubes. We find that this softening of phonons may occur for any intraband scattering phonon mode. On the other hand, the effect of electron-phonon coupling is negligible for zigzag nanotubes. Intrinsic defects give rise to scattering processes governing the transport properties of mesoscopic systems. We investigate analytically and numerically the local density of states in Bernal stacking bilayer graphene with a point defect. With Bernal stacking structure, there are two types of lattice sites. One corresponds to connected sites, where carbon atoms from each layer stack on top of each other, and the other corresponds to disconnected sites. From our theoretical study, a picture emerges in which the pronounced zero-energy peak in the local density of states does not attribute to zero-energy impurity states associated to two different types of defects but to a collective phenomenon of the low-energy resonant states induced by the defect. To corroborate this description, we numerically show that at small system size $N$, where $N$ is the number of unit cells, the zero-energy peak near the defect scales as $1/\ln N$ for the quasi-localized zero-energy state and as $1/N$ for the delocalized zero-energy state. As the system size approaches to the thermodynamic limit, the former zero-energy peak becomes a power-law singularity $1/|E|$ in low energies, while the latter is broadened into a Lorentzian shape. A striking point is that both types of zero-energy peaks decay as $1/r^2$ away from the defect, manifesting the quasi-localized character. Based on our results, we propose a general formula for the local density of states in low-energy and in real space. We study the critical behavior of Bose-Einstein condensation in the second band of a bipartite optical square lattice in a renormalization group framework at one-loop order. Within our field theoretical representation of the system, we approximate the system as a two-component Bose gas in three dimensions. We demonstrate that the system is in a different universality class than the previously studied condensation in a frustrated triangular lattice due to an additional Umklapp scattering term, which stabilizes the chiral superfluid order at low temperatures. We derive the renormalization group flow of the system and show that this order persists in the low energy limit. Furthermore, the renormalization flow suggests that the phase transition from the thermal phase to the chiral superfluid state is first order., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

We investigate the quantum phases of mixed-dimensional cold atom mixtures. In particular, we consider a mixture of a Fermi gas in a two-dimensional lattice, interacting with a bulk Fermi gas or a Bose-Einstein condensate in a three-dimensional lattice. The effective interaction of the two-dimensional system mediated by the bulk system is determined. We perform a functional renormalization group analysis, and demonstrate that by tuning the properties of the bulk system, a subtle competition of several superconducting orders can be controlled among $s$-wave, $p$-wave, $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave, and $g_{xy(x^2-y^2)}$-wave pairing symmetries. Other instabilities such as a charge-density wave order are also demonstrated to occur. In particular, we find that the critical temperature of the $d$-wave pairing induced by the next-nearest-neighbor interactions can be an order of magnitude larger than that of the same pairing induced by doping in the simple Hubbard model. We expect that by combining the nearest-neighbor interaction with the next-nearest-neighbor hopping (known to enhance $d$-wave pairing), an even higher critical temperature may be achieved., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

The recent experimental condensation of ultracold atoms in a triangular optical lattice with negative effective tunneling energies paves the way to study frustrated systems in a controlled environment. Here, we explore the critical behavior of the chiral phase transition in such a frustrated lattice in three dimensions. We represent the low-energy action of the lattice system as a two-component Bose gas corresponding to the two minima of the dispersion. The contact repulsion between the bosons separates into intra- and inter-component interactions, referred to as $V_{0}$ and $V_{12}$, respectively. We first employ a Huang-Yang-Luttinger approximation of the free energy. For $V_{12}/V_{0} = 2$, which corresponds to the bare interaction, this approach suggests a first order phase transition, at which both the U$(1)$ symmetry of condensation and the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry of the emergent chiral order are broken simultaneously. Furthermore, we perform a renormalization group calculation at one-loop order. We demonstrate that the coupling regime $01$ we show that $V_{0}$ flows to a negative value, while $V_{12}$ increases and remains positive. This results in a breakdown of the effective quartic field theory due to a cubic anisotropy, and again suggests a discontinuous phase transition., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

Following the recent proposal to create quadrupolar gases [S.G. Bhongale et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 155301 (2013)], we investigate what quantum phases can be created in these systems in one dimension. We consider a geometry of two coupled one-dimensional systems, and derive the quantum phase diagram of ultra-cold fermionic atoms interacting via quadrupole-quadrupole interaction within a Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid framework. We map out the phase diagram as a function of the distance between the two tubes and the angle between the direction of the tubes and the quadrupolar moments. The latter can be controlled by an external field. We show that there are two magic angles $\theta^{c}_{B,1}$ and $\theta^{c}_{B,2}$ between $0$ to $\pi/2$, where the intratube quadrupolar interactions vanish and change signs. Adopting a pseudo-spin language with regards to the two 1D systems, the system undergoes a spin-gap transition and displays a zig-zag density pattern, above $\theta^{c}_{B,2}$ and below $\theta^{c}_{B,1}$. Between the two magic angles, we show that polarized triplet superfluidity and a planar spin-density wave order compete with each other. The latter corresponds to a bond order solid in higher dimensions. We study density wave instabilities in a doubly-degenerate Fermi-Fermi mixture with $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ symmetry on a square lattice. For sufficiently large on-site inter-species repulsion, when the two species of fermions are both at half-filling, two conventional ($s$-wave) number density waves are formed with a $\pi$-phase difference between them to minimize the inter-species repulsion. Upon moving one species away from half-filling, an unconventional density wave with $d_{xy}$-wave symmetry emerges. When both species are away from the vicinity of half-filling, superconducting instabilities dominate. We present results of a functional renormalization-group calculation that maps out the phase diagram at weak couplings. Also, we provide a simple explanation for the emergence of the $d_{xy}$-density wave phase based on a four-patch model. We find a robust and general mechanism for $d_{xy}$-density-wave formation that is related to the shape and size of the Fermi surfaces. The density imbalance between the two species of fermions in the vicinity of half-filling leads to phase-space discrepancy for different inter-species Umklapp couplings. Using a phase space argument for leading corrections in the one-loop renormalization group approach to fermions, we show that the phase-space discrepancy in our system causes opposite flows for the two leading intra-species Umklapp couplings and that this triggers the $d_{xy}$-density-wave instability., Comment: revised long version; 8 pages, 7 figures

We study the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice, including on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) interactions, at weak couplings. We show that the charge-density-wave phase that is known to occur at half-filling when 4V > U gives way to a d_{xy} -wave superconducting instability away from half-filling, when the Fermi surface is not perfectly nested, and for sufficiently large repulsive and a range of on-site repulsive interaction. In addition, when nesting is further suppressed and in presence of a nearest-neighbor attraction, a triplet time-reversal breaking (p_x + ip_y)-wave pairing instability emerges, competing with the d_{x2+y2} pairing state that is known to dominate at fillings just slightly away from half. At even smaller fillings, where the Fermi surface no longer presents any nesting, the (p_x +ip_y)-wave superconducting phase dominates in the whole regime of on-site repulsions and nearest-neighbor attractions, while d_{xy}-pairing occurs in the presence of on-site attraction. Our results suggest that zero-energy Majorana fermions can be realized on a square lattice in the presence of a magnetic field. For a system of cold fermionic atoms on a two-dimensional square optical lattice, both an on-site repulsion and a nearest-neighbor attraction would be required, in addition to rotation of the system to create vortices. We discuss possible ways of experimentally engineering the required interaction terms in a cold atom system.

The recent realization of mixed-dimensional systems of cold atoms has attracted much attention from both experimentalists and theorists. Different effective interactions and novel correlated quantum many-body phases may be engineered in these systems, with the different phases being tunable via external parameters. In this article we investigate a two-species Fermi atom mixture: one species of atom exists in two hyperfine states and is confined to move in a two-leg ladder, interacting with an on-site interaction, and the other moves freely in a two dimensional square lattice that contains the two-leg ladder. The two species of atoms interact via an on-site interaction on the ladder. In the limit of weak inter-species interactions, the two-dimensional gas can be integrated out, leading to an effective long-range mediated interaction in the ladder, generated by to the on-site inter-species interaction. We show that the form of the mediated interaction can be controlled by the density of the two-dimensional gas and that it enhances the charge density wave instability in the two-leg ladder after the renormalization group transformation. Parameterizing the phase diagram with various experimentally controllable quantities, we discuss the possible tuning of the macroscopic quantum many-body phases of the two-leg ladder in this mixed-dimensional fermionic cold atom system., Comment: 4 pages and 3 figures

The role of electron-phonon interactions in iron-based superconductor is currently under debate with conflicting experimental reports on the isotope effect. To address this important issue, we employ the renormalization-group method to investigate the competition between electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in these materials. The renormalization-group analysis shows that the ground state is a phonon-dressed unconventional superconductor: the dominant electronic interactions account for pairing mechanism while electron-phonon interactions are subdominant. Because of the phonon dressing, the isotope effect of the critical temperature can be normal or reversed, depending on whether the retarded intra- or inter-band interactions are altered upon isotope substitutions. In previous studies, we proposed a scaling ansatz for electron-electron interactions under renormalization group transformation. With the inclusion of phonon-mediated interactions, we show that the scaling ansatz, characterized by the divergent logarithmic length $l_d$ and a set of renormalization-group exponents, also works rather well. The superconducting phases in a doped two-leg ladder are studied and classified by these renormalization-group exponents as demonstration. We investigate pairing mechanism in multiband superconductors. To put our feet on firm ground, unbiased renormalization group analysis is carried out for iron-based superconductors. It is quite remarkable that, after integrating out quantum fluctuations, the renormalization-group flows agree exceedingly well with a mean-field Hamiltonian where interband pair hopping plays an essential role. Through interband pair hopping, electrons can overcome the repulsive interaction between them and form resonating Cooper pairs between different bands. Unlike the conventional superconductors, the pairing mechanism in multiband superconductors is resonating pair hopping between different bands, just like the resonating chemical bonds in benzene. The effective mean-field Hamiltonian spots a small parameter dictating the critical temperature and also explains how interband pair hopping always enahnces spin fluctuations at the nesting momentum connecting the Fermi surfaces. In short, no attractive glue is needed and resonating interband pair hopping is the key to Cooper pair formation in unconventional superconductors. In our previous study, a single-branch of ferromagnetic magnon with linear dispersion is shown to exist near the (uncompensated) zigzag edge for Heisenberg model on honeycomb lattice. Here we develop a field-theory description for the edge magnon and find its dynamics is captured by the one-dimensional relativistic Klein-Gordon equation. It is intriguing that the boundary field theory for the edge magnon is tied up with its bulk counterpart, described by the two-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation. Furthermore, we also reveal how the parity symmetry relates evanescent modes on opposite edges in a honeycomb nanoribbon. By employing alternative methods, including Schwinger bosons and density-matrix renormalization group, we also demonstrate that the relativistic edge magnon is robust even when the Neel order in the bulk is destroyed by quantum fluctuations. Recently, Andreev bound states in iron pnictide have been proposed as an experimental probe to detect the relative minus sign in the $s_\pm$-wave pairing. While previous theoretical investigations demonstrated the feasibility of the approach, the local density of states in the midgap regime is small, making the detection hard in experiments. We revisit this important problem from the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian on the square lattice with appropriate boundary conditions. Significant spectral weights in the midgap regime are spotted, leading to easy detection of the Andreev bound states in experiments. Peaks in the momentum-resolved local density of states appear and lead to enhanced quasiparticle interferences at specific momenta. We analyze the locations of these magic spots and propose they can be verified in experiments by the Fourier-transformed scanning tunneling spectroscopy., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The phase diagram for the interacting fermions in weak coupling is described by the perturbative renormalization group equations. Due to the lack of analytic solutions for these coupled non-linear differential equations, it is rather subtle to tell which couplings are relevant or irrelevant. We propose a powerful classification scheme to build up the hierarchy of the relevant couplings by a scaling Ansatz found numerically. To demonstrate its superiority over the conventional classification for the relevant couplings, we apply this scheme to a controversial phase transition in the two-leg ladder and show that it should be a non-trivial crossover instead. The scaling Ansatz we propose here can classify the relevant couplings in hierarchical order without any ambiguity and can improve significantly how we interpret the numerical outcomes in general renormalization group methods., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We study the exchange coupling mediated by itinerant carriers with spin-orbit interaction by both analytic and numeric approaches. The mediated exchange coupling is non-collinear and its spatial trends depend on the Fermi surface topology of the itinerant carriers. Taking Rashba interaction as an example, the exchange coupling is similar to the conventional Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida type in weak coupling. On the other hand, in the strong coupling, the spiral interaction dominates. In addition, inclusion of finite spin relaxation always makes the non-collinear spiral exchange interaction dominant. We study the Andreev edge states with different pairing symmetries and boundary topologies on semi-infinite triangular lattice of Na_xCoO_2.yH_2O. A general mapping from the two dimensional lattice to the one dimensional tight-binding model is developed. It is shown that the phase diagram of the Andreev edge states depends on the pairing symmetry and also the boundary topology. Surprisingly, the structure of the phase diagram crucially relies on the nodal points on the Fermi surface and can be explained by an elegant gauge argument. We compute the momentum-resolved local density of states near the edge and predict the hot spots which are measurable in Fourier-transformed scanning tunneling spectroscopy., Comment: 12 pages, 17 figures

We study the spin-wave excitations near the zigzag edge of graphene. It is rather interesting that we obtain a single branch of relativistic ferromagnetic magnon due to the presence of the open boundary. Note that magnons in antiferomagnets appear in pairs, while the single brach magnon in ferromagnets does not have relativistic dispersion. Thus, the magnon near the zigzag edge of graphene is a hybrid of both, signaling its intrinsic property as a boundary excitation that must be embedded in a higher dimensional bulk system., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

It is generally believed that a point defect in graphene gives rise to an impurity state at zero energy and causes a sharp peak in the local density of states near the defect site. We revisit the defect problem in graphene and find the general consensus incorrect. By both analytic and numeric methods, we show that the contribution to the local density of states from the impurity state vanishes in the thermodynamic limit. Instead, the pronounced peak of the zero-bias anomaly is a power-law singularity $1/|E|$ from infinite resonant peaks in the low-energy regime induced by the defect. We investigate the non-collinear exchange coupling across the trilayer magnetic junction composed of an intermediate layer with Rashba interaction and two sandwiching ferromagnetic ones. To compute the mediated exchange coupling, one needs to go beyond the single-particle argument and integrate over the contributions from the whole Fermi surface. Surprisingly, we find that the topology of the Fermi surface plays a crucial role in determining whether the oscillatory RKKY or the spiral interactions would dominate. This work studies the semiclassical methods in multi-dimensional quantum systems bounded by finite potentials. By replacing the Maslov index by the scattering phase, the modified transfer operator method gives rather accurate corrections to the quantum energies of the circular and square potential pots of finite heights. The result justifies the proposed scattering phase correction which paves the way for correcting other semiclassical methods based on Green functions, like Gutzwiller trace formula, dynamical zeta functions, and Landauer-B\"uttiker formula., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
