1-naphthol (1-NAP) is the main metabolite of pesticide carbaryl and naphthalene, and is also a genotoxic and carcinogenic intermediate in the synthesis of organic compound, dyes, pigment and pharmaceutical industry. In this work, two novel haptens were designed and synthesized for developing a competitive indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ciELISA) method for 1-NAP in urine samples. The assay showed a limit of detection of 2.21 ng/mL and working range from 4.02 ng/mL to 31.25 ng/mL for 1-NAP in optimized working buffer. The matrix effect of samples was eliminated via 15-fold dilution of optimized working buffer. Good average recoveries (102.4%-123.4%) with a coefficient of variation from 11.7% to 14.7% was obtained for spiked urine samples. Subsequent instrument verification test showed good correlation between the results of ciELISA and high-performance liquid chromatography. The developed ciELISA is a high-throughput tool to monitor 1-NAP in urine, which can provide technical support for the establishment of biological exposure level for the exposure to carbaryl, naphthalene and other related pollutants.

The association between influenza infection and thromboembolism (TE) events, including cardiovascular events, cerebrovascular events, pulmonary embolism, and deep vein thrombosis, is supported by compelling evidence. However, there is a disparity in the risk factors that impact the outcomes of severe influenza‐complicated TE in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of severe influenza‐complicated TE in ICU patients and identify any associated risk factors. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted, recruiting consecutive patients with TE events admitted to the ICU between December 2015 through December 2018 at our institution in Taiwan. The study included a group of 108 patients with severe influenza and a control group of 192 patients with severe community‐acquired pneumonia. Associations between complicated TE, length of ICU stay, and 90‐day mortality were evaluated using logistic regression analysis, and risk factors were identified using univariate and multivariate generalized linear regression analyses. Results: TE event prevalence was significantly higher in ICU patients with severe influenza than in ICU patients with severe CAP (21.3% vs. 5.7%, respectively; p < 0.05). Patients with severe influenza who developed TE experienced a significant increase in the ratio of mechanical ventilation use, length of mechanical ventilation use, ICU stay, and 90‐day mortality when compared to patients without TE (all p < 0.05). The comparison of severe CAP patients with and without TE revealed no significant differences (p > 0.05). The development of thromboembolic events in patients with severe influenza or severe noninfluenza CAP is linked to influenza infection and hypertension (p < 0.05). Furthermore, complicated TE and the severity of the APACHE II score are risk factors for 90‐day mortality in ICU patients with severe influenza (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Patients with severe influenza and complicated TE are more likely to have an extended ICU stay and 90‐day mortality than patients with severe CAP. The risk is significantly higher for patients with a higher APACHE II score. INTRODUCTION: Although glymphatic function is involved in Alzheimer's disease (AD), its potential for predicting the pathological and clinical progression of AD and its sequential association with core AD biomarkers is poorly understood. METHODS: Whole‐brain glymphatic activity was measured by diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space (DTI‐ALPS) in participants with AD dementia (n = 47), mild cognitive impairment (MCI; n = 137), and normal controls (n = 235) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. RESULTS: ALPS index was significantly lower in AD dementia than in MCI or controls. Lower ALPS index was significantly associated with faster changes in amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) burden and AD signature region of interest volume, higher risk of amyloid‐positive transition and clinical progression, and faster rates of amyloid‐ and neurodegeneration‐related cognitive decline. Furthermore, the associations of the ALPS index with cognitive decline were fully mediated by amyloid PET and brain atrophy. DISCUSSION: Glymphatic failure may precede amyloid pathology, and predicts amyloid deposition, neurodegeneration, and clinical progression in AD. Objectives: The role of autoimmune diseases on the risk for acute epiglottitis remains uncertain. This study aimed to delineate the association between epiglottitis and autoimmune diseases using population database. Methods: A population-based retrospective study was conducted to analyze claims data from Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database collected over January, 2000, to December, 2013. Results: In total, 2339 patients with epiglottitis were matched with 9356 controls without epiglottitis by sex, age, socioeconomic status, and urbanization level. The correlation between autoimmune diseases and epiglottitis was analyzed by multivariate logistic regression. Compared with controls, patients with epiglottitis were much more likely to have preexisting Sjögren syndrome (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 2.37; 95% CI: 1.14-4.91; P =.021). In addition, polyautoimmunity was associated with increased risk of epiglottitis (aOR: 2.08; 95% CI: 1.14-3.80; P =.018), particularly in those aged >50 years (aOR: 2.61; 95% CI: 1.21-5.66; P =.015). Conclusions: Among autoimmune diseases, we verify the association between epiglottitis and Sjögren syndrome in Taiwan. Furthermore, we present the novel discovery that patients with epiglottitis have an increased risk of polyautoimmunity, particularly those aged >50 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
