Abstract

Machine unlearning (MU) seeks to remove knowledge of specific data samples from trained models without the necessity for complete retraining, a task made challenging by the dual objectives of effective erasure of data and maintaining the overall performance of the model. Despite recent advances in this field, balancing between the dual objectives of unlearning remains challenging. From a fresh perspective of generalization, we introduce a novel Learning-to-Unlearn (LTU) framework, which adopts a meta-learning approach to optimize the unlearning process to improve forgetting and remembering in a unified manner. LTU includes a meta-optimization scheme that facilitates models to effectively preserve generalizable knowledge with only a small subset of the remaining set, while thoroughly forgetting the specific data samples. We also introduce a Gradient Harmonization strategy to align the optimization trajectories for remembering and forgetting via mitigating gradient conflicts, thus ensuring efficient and effective model updates. Abstract

Referring expression segmentation aims to segment an object described by a language expression from an image. Despite the recent progress on this task, existing models tackling this task may not be able to fully capture semantics and visual representations of individual concepts, which limits their generalization capability, especially when handling novel compositions of learned concepts. In this work, through the lens of meta learning, we propose a Meta Compositional Referring Expression Segmentation (MCRES) framework to enhance model compositional generalization performance. Specifically, to handle various levels of novel compositions, our framework first uses training data to construct a virtual training set and multiple virtual testing sets, where data samples in each virtual testing set contain a level of novel compositions w.r.t. the virtual training set. Then, following a novel meta optimization scheme to optimize the model to obtain good testing performance on the virtual testing sets after training on the virtual training set, our framework can effectively drive the model to better capture semantics and visual representations of individual concepts, and thus obtain robust generalization performance even when handling novel compositions. 4. Comparing the impact of targeting limited driving pressure to low tidal volume ventilation on mortality in mechanically ventilated adults with COVID-19 ARDS: an exploratory target trial emulation

Abstract

Background An association between driving pressure (∆P) and the outcomes of invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) may exist. However, the effect of a sustained limitation of ∆P on mortality in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), including patients with COVID-19 (COVID-19-related acute respiratory distress syndrome (C-ARDS)) undergoing IMV, has not been rigorously evaluated. The use of emulations of a target trial in intensive care unit research remains in its infancy. To inform future, large ARDS target trials, we explored using a target trial emulation approach to analyse data from a cohort of IMV adults with C-ARDS to determine whether maintaining daily ∆p24 hours of IMV were considered to be assigned to limited ∆P or LTVV. Lung mechanics were measured twice daily after ventilator setting adjustments were made. To evaluate the effect of each lung-protective ventilation (LPV) strategy on the 28-day mortality, we fit a stabilised inverse probability weighted marginal structural model that adjusted for baseline and time-varying confounders known to affect protection strategy use/adherence or survival.Results Among the 92 patients included, 27 (29.3%) followed limited ∆P ventilation, 23 (25.0%) the LTVV strategy and 42 (45.7%) received no LPV strategy. The adjusted estimated 28-day survival was 47.0% (95% CI 23%, 76%) in the limited ∆P group, 70.3% in the LTVV group (95% CI 37.6%, 100%) and 37.6% (95% CI 20.8%, 58.0%) in the no LPV strategy group.Interpretation Limiting ∆P may not provide additional survival benefits for patients with C-ARDS over LTVV. Our results help inform the development of future target trial emulations focused on evaluating LPV strategies, including reduced ∆P, in adults with ARDS.

6. Enabling Mobility in LTE-Compatible Mobile-edge Computing with Programmable Switches

Abstract

Network softwarization triggered a new wave of innovation in modern network design. The next generation of mobile networks embraces this trend. Mobile-edge computing (MEC) is a key part of emerging mobile networks that enables ultra-low latency mission-critical application such as vehicle-to vehicle communication. MEC aims at bringing delay-sensitive applications closer to the radio access network to enable ultra-low latency for users and decrease the back-haul pressure on mobile service providers. However, there are no practical solutions to enable mobility at MEC where connections are no longer anchored to the core network and serving applications are supposed to move as their users move. We propose the mobile-edge gateway (MEGW) to address this gap. MEGW enables mobility for MEC applications transparently and without requiring any modifications to existing protocols and applications. MEGW supports mobility by reconstructing mobile users' location via listening to LTE control plane in addition to using two-stage location-dependent traffic steering for edge connections. Networks can incrementally upgrade to support MEC by upgrading some IP router to programmable switches that run MEGW. We have implemented MEGW using P4 language and verified its compatibility with existing LTE networks in a testbed running reference LTE protocol stack. Furthermore, using packet-level simulations we show that the two-stage traffic steering algorithm reduces the number of application migrations and simplifies service provisioning.

12. Examining Motivational Orientation and Learning Strategies in Computer-Supported Self-Directed Learning (CS-SDL) for Mathematics: The Perspective of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Goals

Abstract

One-to-one technology, which allows every student to receive equal access to learning tasks through a personal computing device, has shown increasing potential for self-directed learning in elementary schools. With computer-supported self-directed learning (CS-SDL), students may set their own learning goals through the suggestions of the system based on their e-portfolio and strive for the goals with efforts and mathematics capability. However, unlike adults who hold specific purposes that lead to enhanced motivation for SDL, children's motivation is crucial for learning individually. Therefore, this study examines the differences in motivational orientation and learning strategies between second graders with different intensities of intrinsic and extrinsic goals. The results indicate that students with high intensity of both intrinsic and extrinsic goals demonstrate significantly higher motivational orientation and learning strategies than those with low intensity of goals. These results provide supportive evidence for the design of CS-SDL at the elementary level and offer a reference for exploring children's motivational differences in CS-SDL.

Abstract

The teacher-directed approach characteristic of the traditional classroom normally adopted by mathematics teachers provides few opportunities for students to develop their mathematical problem-solving skills and little encouragement for them to engage in conversation. Furthermore, this approach might not be flexible to students’ individual learning needs and could generate low interest in mathematics among students. To reduce these learning problems, this study proposes a student-centered learning activity called interest-driven video creation,which adopts interest-driven creator (IDC) theory in its design. By viewing cognitive apprenticeship strategies as subcomponent concepts of the creation loop in IDC theory, this study could articulate and enrich the creation loop model of IDC design in mathematics. In an interest-driven video creation activity, students solved mathematics word problems through individual and group creation of tutorial videos. With these videos, students could teach their fellow classmates by discussing mathematics concepts and sharing ideas. The preliminary results reveal significant improvements in mathematics achievement and show that both high- and low-achieving students have positive attitudes and low anxiety regarding the activity and perceive both mathematics and the learning activity to be highly useful. In addition, the students’ perceptions of the benefits of the activity for learning are positive overall. Students also agree that they enjoy and engage in the video creation activity and that the activity helps them to learn mathematics better and improves their communication skills, teamwork skills, and filmmaking techniques.

Once the IRF began accepting patients for rehabilitation following recent COVID-19 infection as well as treatment of asymptomatic COVID-19 positive patients, a new order set was created for treatment of confirmed cases of COVID-19. Because there was initially little literature in regard to when patients with COVID-19 would no longer be contagious, our hospital infection prevention committee recommended COVID-19 antigen test on admission as well as on Day 7 and Day 10 in an attempt to clear COVID-19 positive patients with two consecutive negative tests. Both infection prevention staff as well as clinicians found the dashboard useful both for tracking patients with potential COVID-19 symptoms and ensuring that these patients had appropriate testing as well as for clinicians to more easily identify patients who might be at risk. Patients with negative COVID-19 diagnostic test results were moved back to their original rehabilitation unit and patients with positive test results or imaging results suggestive of COVID-19 were transferred to an acute care hospital for management.
