Abstract

Massive stars end their life as core-collapse supernovae, amongst which some extremes are Type Ic broad-lined supernovae associated with long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) having powerful relativistic jets. Their less-extreme brethren make unsuccessful jets that are choked inside the stars, appearing as X-ray flashes or low-luminosity GRBs. On the other hand, there exists a population of extragalactic fast X-ray transients (EFXTs) with timescales ranging from seconds to thousands of seconds, whose origins remain obscure. Known sources that contribute to the observed EFXT population include the softer analogs of LGRBs, shock breakouts of supernovae, or unsuccessful jets. Here, we report the discovery of the bright X-ray transient EP240414a detected by the Einstein Probe (EP), which is associated with the Type Ic supernova SN 2024gsa at a redshift of 0.401. The X-ray emission evolution is characterised by a very soft energy spectrum peaking at < 1.3 keV, which makes it distinct from known LGRBs, X-ray flashes, or low-luminosity GRBs. Follow-up observations at optical and radio bands revealed the existence of a weak relativistic jet that interacts with an extended shell surrounding the progenitor star. Located on the outskirts of a massive galaxy, this event reveals a new population of explosions of Wolf-Rayet stars characterised by a less powerful engine that drives a successful but weak jet, possibly owing to a progenitor star with a smaller core angular momentum than in traditional LGRB progenitors., Comment: 43 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, submitted. Abstract

Since the first plasma realized in 2020, a series of key systems on HL-3 (known as HL-2M before) tokamak have been equipped/upgraded, including in-vessel components (the first wall, lower divertor, and toroidal cryogenic/water-cooling/baking/glow discharge systems, etc.), auxiliary heating system of 11 MW, and 28 diagnostic systems (to measure the plasma density electron temperature, radiation, magnetic field, etc.). Magnet field systems were commissioned firstly for divertor plasma discharges. During the 2nd experimental campaign of HL-3 tokamak, several great progresses have been achieved. Firstly, the successful operation with plasma current larger than 1 MA was achieved under a divertor configuration. Secondly, the advanced divertor concept with two distinct snowflake configurations was realized. It is found that the distribution of ion saturation current and heat flux on bottom plate becomes wide due to magnetic surface expansion, demonstrating the advantage of such configuration in the heat flux mitigation. In addition, using the combination of NBI, ECRH and LHCD, the standard sawtoothing high confinement mode of megampere plasma was firstly accessed on the HL-3. The successful commissioning of HL-3 is beneficial for the initial operation of ITER.

Abstract

We have developed an in-situ index of refraction profile n(z) for cold polar ice, using the transit times of radio signals broadcast from an englacial transmitter to 2-5 km distant radio-frequency receivers, deployed at depths up to 200 m. For propagation through a non-uniform medium, Maxwell's equations generally admit two ray propagation solutions from a given transmitter, corresponding to a direct path (D) and a refracted or reflected path (R); the measured D vs. R timing differences (dt(D,R)) are determined by the refractive index profile. We constrain n(z) near South Pole, where the Askaryan Radio Array (ARA) neutrino observatory is located, by simulating D and R ray paths via ray tracing and comparing simulations to measured dt(D,R) values. Using previous ice density data as a proxy for n(z), we demonstrate that our data strongly favors a glaciologically-motivated three-phase densification model rather than a single exponential scale height model. Effective volume simulations for a detector of ARA station antenna depths yield a 14\% increase in neutrino sensitivity over a range of $10^{17} - 10^{21}$ eV using the three-phase model compared to a single exponential.

Abstract

In stars that lie on the main sequence in the Hertzsprung Russel diagram, like our sun, hydrogen is fused to helium in a number of nuclear reaction chains and series, such as the proton-proton chain and the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen cycles. Precisely determined thermonuclear rates of these reactions lie at the foundation of the standard solar model. This review, the third decadal evaluation of the nuclear physics of hydrogen-burning stars, is motivated by the great advances made in recent years by solar neutrino observatories, putting experimental knowledge of the proton-proton chain neutrino fluxes in the few-percent precision range. The basis of the review is a one-week community meeting held in July 2022 in Berkeley, California, and many subsequent digital meetings and exchanges. Each of the relevant reactions of solar and quiescent stellar hydrogen burning is reviewed here, from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. Recommendations for the state of the art of the astrophysical S-factor and its uncertainty are formulated for each of them. Several other topics of paramount importance for the solar model are reviewed, as well: recent and future neutrino experiments, electron screening, radiative opacities, and current and upcoming experimental facilities. Abstract

Ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals exhibit unique non-linear optical properties, with the potential to become transformative materials for photonic applications. A promising direction relies on the fabrication of tailored polar orientational patterns via photoalignment, thus shaping the non-linear optical susceptibility through thin slabs of the ferroelectric fluid. Here, we explore the fabrication of 2D periodic SHG active arrays in ferroelectric nematic fluids, for different materials, cell thicknesses and motifs. Based on polarizing optical microscopy observations in combination with optical simulations, second harmonic generation microscopy and interferometry, the 3D structure of the motifs are revealed. Two different 2D periodic patterns are explored, showing that the balance between flexoelectric and electrostatic energy can lead to different domain structures, an effect which is rooted in the difference between the flexoelectric properties of the materials. It is shown that by combining the surface-inscribed alignment with different spontaneous degrees of twist, 2D SHG active arrays can be obtained in the micrometre scale, in which adjacent areas exhibit maximum SHG signals at opposite angles., Comment: 24 pages, 5 Images main, 15 supplementary images

Abstract

Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to originate from core collapse of massive stars. High-redshift GRBs can probe the star formation and reionization history of the early universe, but their detection remains rare. Here we report the detection of a GRB triggered in the 0.5--4 keV band by the Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) on board the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, designated as EP240315a, whose bright peak was also detected by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope and Konus-Wind through off-line analyses. At a redshift of $z=4.859$, EP240315a showed a much longer and more complicated light curve in the soft X-ray band than in gamma-rays. Benefiting from a large field-of-view ($\sim$3600 deg$^2$) and a high sensitivity, EP-WXT captured the earlier engine activation and extended late engine activity through a continuous detection. With a peak X-ray flux at the faint end of previously known high-$z$ GRBs, the detection of EP240315a demonstrates the great potential for EP to study the early universe via GRBs., Comment: 41 pages, 8 figures, 7 tables

Abstract

The FAST All Sky HI survey (FASHI) was designed to cover the entire sky observable by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), spanning approximately 22000 square degrees of declination between -14 deg and +66 deg, and in the frequency range of 1050-1450 MHz, with the expectation of eventually detecting more than 100000 HI sources. Between August 2020 and June 2023, FASHI had covered more than 7600 square degrees, which is approximately 35% of the total sky observable by FAST. It has a median detection sensitivity of around 0.76 mJy/beam and a spectral line velocity resolution of ~6.4 km/s at a frequency of ~1.4 GHz. As of now, a total of 41741 extragalactic HI sources have been detected in the frequency range 1305.5-1419.5 MHz, corresponding to a redshift limit of z<0.09. By cross-matching FASHI sources with the Siena Galaxy Atlas (SGA) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) catalogs, we found that 16972 (40.7%) sources have spectroscopic redshifts and 10975 (26.3%) sources have only photometric redshifts. Most of the remaining 13794 (33.0%) HI sources are located in the direction of the Galactic plane, making their optical counterparts difficult to identify due to high extinction or high contamination of Galactic stellar sources. Based on current survey results, the FASHI survey is an unprecedented blind extragalactic HI survey. It has higher spectral and spatial resolution and broader coverage than the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey (ALFALFA). When completed, FASHI will provide the largest extragalactic HI catalog and an objective view of HI content and large-scale structure in the local universe., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, published in SCPMA. Abstract

Relativistic corrections have been made in the non-relativistic antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) simulations to apply to the high energy neutron production in the $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C and $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C collisions at incident energies of 290 and 400 MeV/nucleon. The corrections are made in kinematics alone and no nucleon-nucleon inelastic scatterings nor meson productions are taken into account, and AMD with the relativistic corrections is called semi-relativistic AMD. The three-nucleon collision (3NC) and Fermi boost in the collision processes are taken into account in the non-relativistic AMD. Since the relativistic corrections tend to compensate in each other, the difference between the semi-relativistic and non-relativistic results become small. High energy tails of the available experimental neutron double differential cross sections, especially at larger angles, are well reproduced by AMD with the 3NC term both with non-relativistic and semi-relativistic simulations. These results indicate that the high energy neutrons are dominantly produced by the 3NC process in this incident energy range.

Comprehensive clinicopathological data were documented, with particular emphasis on evaluating changes in Ki67 index from baseline to post-NAC. These changes were then correlated with disease-free survival (DFS) through rigorous analysis.Results: Three cohorts, comprising 403, 315, and 72 patients respectively, were finally included. The study found that δKi67 did not show significant associations with other variables and were not identified as independent risk factors for survival. Nevertheless, across the three cohorts, following NAC, HER2-low breast cancer patients with δKi67 below the cut-off value demonstrated a better prognosis compared to those with δKi67 above the cut-off value. Additionally, their prognosis was also superior to that of HER2-zero breast cancer patients with δKi67 below the cut-off value.Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that HER2-low breast cancer patients with δKi67 values below the cut-off point after NAC are associated with improved prognosis. Therefore, finding novel drugs and treatment approaches is crucial to preventing ALI. Drug repurposing is a common practice in clinical research, primarily for drugs that have previously received approval for use in patients, to investigate novel uses of drugs and therapies. One such medication is edaravone, which is a highly effective free-radical scavenger that also has anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, antioxidant, and anti-fibrotic effects. Both basic and clinical studies have shown that edaravone can treat different types of lung injury through its distinct properties. Edaravone exhibits significant protective benefits and holds promising clinical treatment potential for ALI caused by diverse factors, thereby offering a novel approach to treating ALI. This study aims to provide new insights and treatment options for ALI by reviewing both basic and clinical research on the use of edaravone. Abstract

The Askaryan Radio Array Station 1 (A1), the first among five autonomous stations deployed for the ARA experiment at the South Pole, is a unique ultra-high energy neutrino (UHEN) detector based on the Askaryan effect that uses Antarctic ice as the detector medium. Its 16 radio antennas (distributed across 4 strings, each with 2 Vertically Polarized (VPol), 2 Horizontally Polarized (HPol) receivers), and 2 strings of transmitting antennas (calibration pulsers, CPs), each with 1 VPol and 1 HPol channel, are deployed at depths less than 100 m within the shallow firn zone of the 2.8 km thick South Pole (SP) ice. We apply different methods to calibrate its Ice Ray Sampler second generation (IRS2) chip for timing offset and ADC-to-Voltage conversion factors using a known continuous wave input signal to the digitizer, and achieve a precision of sub-nanoseconds. We achieve better calibration for odd, compared to even samples, and also find that the HPols under-perform relative to the VPol channels. Our timing calibrated data is subsequently used to calibrate the ADC-to-Voltage conversion as well as precise antenna locations, as a precursor to vertex reconstruction. The calibrated data will then be analyzed for UHEN signals in the final step of data compression. The ability of A1 to scan the firn region of SP ice sheet will contribute greatly towards a 5-station analysis and will inform the design of the planned IceCube Gen-2 radio array., Comment: 10 pages

Abstract

Description of the subject. Further increases in rice yield potential are generally thought to require greater biomass assimilation. This study presents a new cultivar that draws greater yield from increased harvest index (HI). Objectives. Our objective was to identify the physiological traits that are critical to the high yield of a recently developed short-duration rice cultivar Guiliangyou 2 (GLY2). Method. GLY2 and a check cultivar Yuxiangyouzhan (YXYZ) were grown in a field at the Experimental Farm of Guangxi University, Guangxi province, southern China in early and late rice-growing seasons in 2013. Grain yield, yield components, canopy characteristics including leaf area index (LAI), leaf N content (LNC), leaf area duration (LAD) and assimilation rate (NAR), biomass accumulation, and harvest index were determined for each cultivar in each season. Results. GLY2 produced 17–38% higher grain yield than YXYZ with the same growth duration. Spikelets per m2 and grain weight were higher in GLY2 than in YXYZ by 11–13% and 6–17%, respectively. GLY2 had higher LAI and LAD but lower LNC and NAR than YXYZ. As a consequence of the compensation between the canopy characteristics, there was no significant difference in biomass accumulation between the two cultivars. Harvest index of GLY2 was 13–23% higher than that of YXYZ. Large sink size, high remobilization of stored reserves and maintained biomass production after heading were responsible for the high HI of GLY2. Conclusions. Our study suggests that it is possible to increase HI together with grain yield by improving the potential sink size and the remobilization of stored reserves while maintaining high LAI and LAD in short-duration rice.

Abstract

The Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy (LEIA), a pathfinder of the Wide-field X-ray Telescope of the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, was successfully launched onboard the SATech-01 satellite of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on 27 July 2022. In this paper, we introduce the design and on-ground test results of the LEIA instrument. Using state-of-the-art Micro-Pore Optics (MPO), a wide field-of-view (FoV) of 346 square degrees (18.6 degrees * 18.6 degrees) of the X-ray imager is realized. An optical assembly composed of 36 MPO chips is used to focus incident X-ray photons, and four large-format complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensors, each of 6 cm * 6 cm, are used as the focal plane detectors. The instrument has an angular resolution of 4 - 8 arcmin (in FWHM) for the central focal spot of the point spread function, and an effective area of 2 - 3 cm2 at 1 keV in essentially all the directions within the field of view. The detection passband is 0.5 - 4 keV in the soft X-rays and the sensitivity is 2 - 3 * 10-11 erg s-1 cm-2 (about 1 mini-Crab) at 1,000 second observation. The total weight of LEIA is 56 kg and the power is 85 W. The satellite, with a design lifetime of 2 years, operates in a Sun-synchronous orbit of 500 km with an orbital period of 95 minutes. LEIA is paving the way for future missions by verifying in flight the technologies of both novel focusing imaging optics and CMOS sensors for X-ray observation, and by optimizing the working setups of the instrumental parameters. Abstract

The Super $\tau$-Charm facility (STCF) is an electron-positron collider proposed by the Chinese particle physics community. It is designed to operate in a center-of-mass energy range from 2 to 7 GeV with a peak luminosity of $0.5\times 10^{35}{\rm cm}^{-2}{\rm s}^{-1}$ or higher. The STCF will produce a data sample about a factor of 100 larger than that by the present $\tau$-Charm factory -- the BEPCII, providing a unique platform for exploring the asymmetry of matter-antimatter (charge-parity violation), in-depth studies of the internal structure of hadrons and the nature of non-perturbative strong interactions, as well as searching for exotic hadrons and physics beyond the Standard Model. The STCF project in China is under development with an extensive R\&D program. This document presents the physics opportunities at the STCF, describes conceptual designs of the STCF detector system, and discusses future plans for detector R\&D and physics case studies.

Abstract

This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 at MIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. The meeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physics since the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research over the coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physics opportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) and longer term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with the facilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discovery potential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. This White Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail the Recommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the Town Meeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progress and accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, by an overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and in relation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview of the physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devoted to the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion. This is followed by a dedicated section on computing in Section 6. Recent research has shown that oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the development of AD. Therefore, inhibiting oxidative stress may be an effective therapeutic approach for AD. Nano-molybdenum is a promising material for use as an antioxidant. We aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effects and preliminary mechanisms of molybdenum nanoparticles (Mo NPs) by using a murine model of chemically induced AD-like disease.Methods: HaCaT cells, a spontaneously immortalized human keratinocyte cell line, were stimulated by tumor necrosis factor-alpha /interferon-gamma after pre-treatment with Mo NPs. Reactive oxygen species levels, production of inflammatory factors, and activation of the nuclear factor kappa-B and the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor pathways were then evaluated. Mo NPs was topically applied to treat a murine model of AD-like disease induced by MC903, a vitamin D3 analog. Dermatitis scores, pruritus scores, transepidermal water loss and body weight were evaluated. AD-related inflammatory factors and chemokines were evaluated. Activation of the nuclear factor kappa-B and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor / heme oxygenase-1 pathways was assessed.Results: Our data showed that the topical application of Mo NPs dispersion could significantly alleviate AD skin lesions and itching and promote skin barrier repair. Further mechanistic experiments revealed that Mo NPs could inhibit the excessive activation of the nuclear factor kappa-B pathway, promote the expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor and heme oxygenase-1 proteins, and suppress oxidative stress reactions. Additionally, they inhibited the expression of thymic stromal lymphopoietin, inflammatory factors, and chemokines, thereby alleviating skin inflammation.Conclusion: Mo NPs present a promising alternative treatment option for patients with AD as they could address three pivotal mechanisms in the pathogenesis of AD concurrently.Keywords: oxidative stress, skin barrier function, chemokines, antioxidants, pro-inflammatory factors

It is primarily characterized by oxidative stress and affects the integrity of the pulmonary barrier. In severe cases, ALI can progress to ARDS(acute respiratory distress syndrome), a condition that poses a serious threat to the lives of affected patients. To date, the etiological mechanisms underlying ALI remain elusive, and available therapeutic options are quite limited. AMPK(AMP-activated protein kinase), an essential serine/threonine protein kinase, performs a pivotal function in the regulation of cellular energy levels and cellular regulatory mechanisms, including the detection of redox signals and mitigating oxidative stress. Meanwhile, Nrf2(nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2), a critical transcription factor, alleviates inflammation and oxidative responses by interacting with multiple signaling pathways and contributing to the modulation of oxidative enzymes associated with inflammation and programmed cell death. Indeed, AMPK induces the dissociation of Nrf2 from Keap1(kelch-like ECH-associated protein-1) and facilitates its translocation into the nucleus to trigger the transcription of downstream antioxidant genes, ultimately suppressing the expression of inflammatory cells in the lungs. Given their roles, AMPK and Nrf2 hold promise as novel treatment targets for ALI. This study aimed to summarise the current status of research on the AMPK/Nrf2 signaling pathway in ALI, encompassing recently reported natural compounds and drugs that can activate the AMPK/Nrf2 signaling pathway to alleviate lung injury, and provide a theoretical reference for early intervention in lung injury and future research on lung protection.Keywords: acute lung injury, AMPK, Nrf2, inflammatory response, oxidative stress

Targeting GIT1/β-Pix complex might be a potential therapeutic strategy for interfering cancer metastasis. However, at present, no well-recognized small-molecule inhibitor targeting GIT1/β-Pix is available. Thus, we aim to discover novel GIT1/β-Pix inhibitors with simple scaffold, high activity and low toxicity to develop new therapeutic strategies to restrain cancer metastasis.Methods: GIT1/β-Pix inhibitors were identified from ChemBridge by virtual screening. Briefly, the modeling of GIT1 was performed and the establishment of GIT1/β-Pix binding pocket enabled the virtual screening to identify the inhibitor. In addition, direct binding of the candidate molecules to GIT1 was detected by biolayer interferometry (BLI) to discover the hit compound. Furthermore, the inhibitory effect on invasion of stomach and colon cancer cells in vitro was carried out by the transwell assay and detection of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related proteins. Finally, the binding mode of hit compound to GIT1 was estimated by molecular dynamics simulation to analyze the key amino residues to guide further optimization.Results: We selected the top 50 compounds from the ChemBridge library by virtual screening. Then, by skeleton similarity analysis nine compounds were selected for further study. Furthermore, the direct interaction of nine compounds to GIT1 was detected by BLI to obtain the best affinitive compound. Finally, 17302836 was successfully identified (KD = 84.1± 2.0 μM). In vitro tests on 17302836 showed significant anti-invasion effect on gastric cancer and colorectal cancer.Conclusion: We discovered a new GIT1/β-Pix inhibitor (17302836) against gastrointestinal cancer invasion and metastasis. APS improvement, APS recanalization, tumor response, PVTT response rate, overall survival (OS), intrahepatic progression-free survival (InPFS), and adverse events were evaluated.Results: APS improvement was observed in 42 patients (77.8%), with all improvement occurring within two treatment sessions. Complete APS occlusion was achieved in 40 patients (74.1%), and no recanalization occurred. The best objective response rate (ORR) and ORR after two HAIC sessions were 74.1% and 66.7%, respectively. The best PVTT response and PVTT response after two HAIC sessions were 98.1% and 94.4%, respectively. The median OS and InPFS were 10.0 months and 5.0 months, respectively. OS and InPFS were longer in patients with APS occlusion compared to those without (OS 12.1 vs 4.4 months, P< 0.001, InPFS 6.2 vs 2.3 months, P=0.049). ALBI grade, extrahepatic spread, APS disappearance were potential prognostic factors for OS, while APS grade and extrahepatic spread being independently associated with InPFS. This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of patients with pulmonary infection with Elizabethkingia spp. and reveal the risk factors for infection and death.Patients and Methods: In this retrospective case–control study, patients were divided into infection and control groups based on the bacterial identification results. Patients in the infection group were further divided into survival and death groups according to their hospital outcomes. Clinical characteristics between different groups were compared. We further analyzed antimicrobial susceptibility testing results of the isolated strains.Results: A total of the 316 patients were divided into infection (n = 79), 23 of whom died, and control (n = 237) groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that glucocorticoid consumption (OR: 2.35; 95% CI: 1.14– 4.81; P = 0.02), endotracheal intubation (OR: 3.74; 95% CI: 1.62– 8.64; P = 0.002), and colistin exposure (OR: 2.50; 95% CI: 1.01– 6.29; P = 0.046) were significantly associated with pulmonary infection with Elizabethkingia spp. Advanced age (OR: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.00– 1.15; P = 0.046), high acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APACHE) II score (OR: 1.21; 95% CI: 1.01– 1.45; P = 0.037), and low albumin level (OR: 0.73, 95% CI: 0.56– 0.96; P = 0.025) were significantly associated with in-hospital mortality of infected patients. Elizabethkingia spp. was highly resistant to cephalosporins, carbapenems, macrolides, and aminoglycoside, and was sensitive to fluoroquinolones, minocycline, and co-trimoxazole in vitro.Conclusion: Glucocorticoid consumption, tracheal intubation, and colistin exposure were associated with pulmonary infection with Elizabethkingia spp. for critically ill patients. Viruses are identified by different pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs) that activate the mitochondrial antiviral signaling protein (MAVS) or transmembrane protein 173 (STING), which trigger multiple signaling cascades that cause nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) to produce inflammatory factors and interferons (IFNs). PRRs play a pivotal role as the first step in pathogen induction of interferon production. Interferon elicits antiviral activity by inducing the transcription of hundreds of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs) via the janus kinase (JAK) – signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) pathway. An increasing number of studies have shown that environmental, pathogen and host factors regulate the IFN signaling pathway. Here, we summarize the mechanisms of host factor modulation in IFN production via pattern recognition receptors. Abstract

The stellar (n, $\gamma$) cross section data for the mass numbers around A $\approx$ 160 are of key importance to nucleosynthesis in the main component of the slow neutron capture process, which occur in the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP--AGB). The new measurement of (n, $\gamma$) cross sections for $^{159}$Tb was performed using the C$_6$D$_6$ detector system at the back streaming white neutron beam line (Back-n) of the China spallation neutron source (CSNS) with neutron energies ranging from 1 eV to 1 MeV. Experimental resonance capture kernels were reported up to 1.2 keV neutron energy with this capture measurement. Maxwellian-averaged cross sections (MACS) were derived from the measured $^{159}$Tb (n, $\gamma$) cross sections at $kT$ = 5 $\sim$ 100 keV and are in good agreement with the recommended data of KADoNiS-v0.3 and JEFF-3.3, while KADoNiS-v1.0 and ENDF-VIII.0 significantly overestimate the present MACS up to 40$\%$ and 20$\%$, respectively. A sensitive test of the s-process nucleosynthesis was also performed with the stellar evolution code MESA. Significant changes in abundances around A $\approx$ 160 were observed between the ENDF/B-VIII.0 and present measured rate of $^{159}$Tb(n, $\gamma$)$^{160}$Tb in the MESA simulation., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

In the hopes of observing the highest-energy neutrinos (E>1 EeV) populating the Universe, both past (RICE, AURA, ANITA) and current (RNO-G, ARIANNA, ARA and TAROGE-M) polar-sited experiments exploit the impulsive radio emission produced by neutrino interactions. In such experiments, rare single event candidates must be unambiguously identified above backgrounds. Background rejection strategies to date primarily target thermal noise fluctuations and also impulsive radio-frequency signals of anthropogenic origin. In this paper, we consider the possibility that ‘fake’ neutrino signals may also be generated naturally via the ‘triboelectric effect.’ This broadly describes any process in which force applied at a boundary layer results in displacement of surface charge, leading to the production of an electrostatic potential difference ΔV. Wind blowing over granular surfaces such as snow can induce such a potential difference, with subsequent coronal discharge. Discharges over timescales as short as nanoseconds can then lead to radio-frequency emissions at characteristic MHz–GHz frequencies. Using data from various past (RICE, AURA, SATRA, ANITA) and current (RNO-G, ARIANNA and ARA) neutrino experiments, we find evidence for such backgrounds, which are generally characterized by: (a) a threshold wind velocity which likely depends on the experimental trigger criteria and layout; for the experiments considered herein, this value is typically O(10 m/s), (b) frequency spectra generally shifted to the low-end of the frequency regime to which current radio experiments are typically sensitive (100–200 MHz), (c) for the strongest background signals, an apparent preference for discharges from above-surface structures, although the presence of more isotropic, lower amplitude triboelectric discharges cannot be excluded.

Abstract

As a novel X-ray focusing technology, lobster eye micro-pore optics (MPO) feature both a wide observing field of view and true imaging capability, promising sky monitoring with significantly improved sensitivity and spatial resolution in soft X-rays. Since first proposed by Angel (1979), the optics have been extensively studied, developed and trialed over the past decades. In this Letter, we report on the first-light results from a flight experiment of the Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy ($LEIA$), a pathfinder of the wide-field X-ray telescope of the Einstein Probe mission. The piggyback imager, launched in July 2022, has a mostly un-vignetted field of view of $18.6^\circ \times 18.6^\circ $. Its spatial resolution is in the range of 4$-$7 arcmin in FWHM and the focal spot effective area is 2$-$3 cm$^2$, both showing only mild fluctuations across the field of view. We present images of the Galactic center region, Sco X-1 and the diffuse Cygnus Loop nebular taken in snapshot observations over 0.5$-$4 keV. These are truly wide-field X-ray images of celestial bodies observed, for the first time, by a focusing imaging telescope. Initial analyses of the in-flight data show excellent agreement between the observed images and the on-ground calibration and simulations. The instrument and its characterization are briefly described, as well as the flight experiment. The results provide a solid basis for the development of the present and proposed wide-field X-ray missions using lobster eye MPO., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures. Thalidomide at a 50 mg dose was administered once a day after dinner. The dose was increased to 150 mg/d after 3 d if well tolerated. After 1 year of treatment, the hemoglobin (Hb) level was stabilized at its maximum, and thalidomide was gradually reduced and maintained at the minimum dose. The hematological response, transfusion dependence, and haemolytic indicators were assessed.Results: At 9 month of follow-up, 38 (76%) patients achieved an excellent response, 1 (2%) a good response, 4(8%) a minor response, and 7(14%) did not show a response. The overall response rate was 86%. At 9 months, the Hb level increased from 79.0 ± 13.2 g/L at baseline to 99.0 ± 13.7g/L (P< 0.001). Patients who achieved excellent response continued to show an increase in Hb levels during follow-up. At 48 months, the mean Hb level was 98.99 ± 10.3g/L; 21 patients (84.0%) became transfusion independent. Thalidomide was reduced and maintained to 25 mg/d in three of these patients. Moreover, five patients completed 60 months of follow-up, and with a mean Hb level of 99.8 ± 6.7g/L. During follow-up, grade 1– 2 adverse drug reactions were noted; however, no grade 3 or higher adverse event was reported. However, no decrease in hemolytic indicators was observed.Conclusion: Thalidomide was well tolerated in the long term, while it significantly improved Hb levels and reduced the transfusion burden.Keywords: β-thalassemia, transfusion-dependent, thalassemia, thalidomide, foetal hemoglobin

Excessive activation of osteoclastic activity is one of the main contributing factors for osteoporosis-related fractures. While polylactic acid (PLA) is frequently employed as a biodegradable scaffold in tissue engineering, it lacks sufficient biological activity. Microdroplets (MDs) have been explored as an ultrasound-responsive drug delivery method, and mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-derived exosomes have shown therapeutic effects in diverse preclinical investigations. Thus, this study aimed to develop a novel bioactive hybrid PLA scaffold by integrating MDs-NFATc1-silencing siRNA to target osteoclast formation and MSCs-exosomes (MSC-Exo) to influence osteogenic differentiation (MDs-NFATc1/PLA-Exo).Methods: Human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (hBMSCs) were used for exosome isolation. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy were used for exosome and MDs morphological characterization, respectively. The MDs-NFATc1/PLA-Exo scaffold was fabricated through poly(dopamine) and fibrin gel coating. Biocompatibility was assessed using RAW 264.7 macrophages and hBMSCs. Osteoclast formations were examined via TRAP staining. Osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs and cytokine expression modulation were also investigated.Results: MSC-Exo exhibited a cup-shaped structure and effective internalization into cells, while MDs displayed a spherical morphology with a well-defined core-shell structure. Following ultrasound stimulation, the internalization study demonstrated efficient delivery of bioactive MDs into recipient cells. Biocompatibility studies indicated no cytotoxicity of MDs-NFATc1/PLA-Exo scaffolds in RAW 264.7 macrophages and hBMSCs. Both MDs-NFATc1/PLA and MDs-NFATc1/PLA-Exo treatments significantly reduced osteoclast differentiation and formation. In addition, our results further indicated MDs-NFATc1/PLA-Exo scaffold significantly enhanced osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs and modulated cytokine expression.Discussion: These findings suggest that the bioactive MDs-NFATc1/PLA-Exo scaffold holds promise as an innovative structure for bone tissue regeneration. By specifically targeting osteoclast formation and promoting osteogenic differentiation, this hybrid scaffold may address key challenges in osteoporosis-related fractures. Abstract

Employing the elemental sensitivity of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), we study the valence and magnetic order in the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$. We probe spin population of the f-electrons in Ce and d-electrons in Co as a function of temperature (down to 0.1 K) and magnetic field (up to 6 T). From the XAS we find a pronounced contribution of Ce$^{4+}$ component at low temperature and a clear temperature dependence of the Ce valence below 5 K, suggesting enhanced valence fluctuations, an indication for the presence of a nearby quantum critical point (QCP). We observe no significant corresponding change with magnetic field. The XMCD displays a weak signal for Ce becoming clear only at 6 T. This splitting of the Kramers doublet ground state of Ce$^{3+}$ is significantly smaller than expected for independent but screened ions, indicating strong antiferromagnetic pair interactions. Abstract

The strong interaction is not well understood at low energies or for interactions with low momentum transfer. Chiral perturbation theory gives testable predictions for the nucleonic generalized polarizabilities, which are fundamental quantities describing the nucleon’s response to an external field. We report a measurement of the proton’s generalized spin polarizabilities extracted with a polarized electron beam and a polarized solid ammonia target in the region where chiral perturbation theory is expected to be valid. The investigated structure function g2 characterizes the internal spin structure of the proton. From its moments, we extract the longitudinal–transverse spin polarizability δLT and twist-3 matrix element and polarizability d2¯. Our results provide discriminating power between existing chiral perturbation theory calculations and will help provide a better understanding of this strong quantum chromodynamics regime.

Abstract

The strong interaction is not well understood at low energy, or for interactions with low momentum transfer $Q^2$, but one of the clearest insights we have comes from Chiral Perturbation Theory ($\chi$PT). This effective treatment gives testable predictions for the nucleonic generalized polarizabilities -- fundamental quantities describing the nucleon's response to an external field. We have measured the proton's generalized spin polarizabilities in the region where $\chi$PT is expected to be valid. Our results include the first ever data for the transverse-longitudinal spin polarizability $\delta_{LT}$, and also extend the coverage of the polarizability $\bar{d_2}$ to very low $Q^2$ for the first time. These results were extracted from moments of the structure function $g_2$, a quantity which characterizes the internal spin structure of the proton. Our experiment ran at Jefferson Lab using a polarized electron beam and a polarized solid ammonia (NH$_3$) target. The $\delta_{LT}$ polarizability has remained a challenging quantity for $\chi$PT to reproduce, despite its reduced sensitivity to higher resonance contributions; recent competing calculations still disagree with each other and also diverge from the measured neutron data at very low $Q^2$. Our proton results provide discriminating power between existing calculations, and will help provide a better understanding of this strong QCD regime.

47. Mechanisms of Self-Control in the Influence of Moral Elevation on Pro-Social Behavior: A Study Based on an Experimental Paradigm

Experiment 2 was conducted with an additional 140 college students, using both experimental and questionnaire methods to examine the mediating role of self-control resources in the effects of moral elevation on pro-social behavior.Results: (1) The results of Experiment 1 showed that the self-control ability of the moral elevation induction group was significantly better than that of the non-induction group. The accuracy rate of self-control tasks in the induction group (0.94 ± 0.01) was significantly higher than that in the non-induction group (0.89 ± 0.01, F(1,79)=19.10, p < 0.001, η2=0.50). The mean reaction time of the self-control tasks in the induction group (393.63 ± 3.5) was significantly lower than that in the non-induction group (415.38 ± 7.30, F(1,79)=5.87, p =0.026, η2=0.24). (2) The results of Experiment 2 showed a significant positive correlation between moral elevation and self-control resources (r=0.46, p< 0.001), a significant positive correlation between moral elevation and pro-social behavior (r=0.33, p< 0.001), and a significant positive correlation between self-control resources and pro-social behavior (r=0.31, p< 0.001). Not only did moral elevation significantly and positively predict pro-social behavior (β= 0.23, p=0.011), but it also significantly and positively predicted self-control resources (β= 0.46, p< 0.001). Self-control resources significantly and positively predicted pro-social behavior (β= 0.20, p=0.025). The bootstrap test for the mediating effect of self-control resources showed that the upper and lower limits of the 95% confidence interval did not include 0 (indirect effect 0.09, 95% CI [0.023, 0.242], p< 0.001), and the mediating effect accounted for 28.13%.Conclusion: This study revealed the mediating role of self-control resources in the relationship between moral elevation and pro-social behavior, which has important theoretical and practical implications for cultivating pro-social behavior and moral education among college students.Keywords: pro-social behavior, moral elevation, self-control, mediating role, college students

However, the real potential causal relationship between GERD and COPD is unknown and not well established.Methods: In this study, we conducted a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization(MR) to estimate whether GERD and COPD are causal. The GERD genetic data is from summary level data of a genome-wide association (GWAS) meta-analysis (Ncases = 71,522, Ncontrol=26,079). The COPD GWAS are available from the FinnGen (Ncases=16,410, Ncontrol=283,589). MR-Egger regression, Weighted Median, and Inverse-variance weighted (IVW) were used for MR analysis from the R package “TwoSampleMR”, and IVW was the dominant estimation method. Additionally, the MR pleiotropy residual sum and outlier (MR-PRESSO), Cochran Q statistic, and leave-one-out analysis were used to detect and correct for the effect of heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy.Results: MR analysis indicated that GERD was causally associated with an increased risk of COPD (IVW odds ratio (OR): 1.3760, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.1565– 1.6371, P=0.0003), and vice versa (IVW OR: 1.1728, 95% CI:1.0613– 1.2961, P=0.0018). The analyses did not reveal any pleiotropy or heterogeneity.Conclusion: Our study revealed possible evidence for a bidirectional causal relationship between GERD and COPD. Implementing screening and preventive strategies for GERD in individuals with COPD, and vice versa, will be crucial in future healthcare management. Abstract

Magnetic skyrmions are quasiparticles with non-trivial topology, envisioned to play a key role in next-generation data technology while simultaneously attracting fundamental research interest due to their emerging topological charge. In chiral magnetic multilayers, current-generated spin-orbit torques or ultrafast laser excitation can be used to nucleate isolated skyrmions on a picosecond timescale. Both methods, however, produce randomly arranged skyrmions, which inherently limits the precision on the location at which the skyrmions are nucleated. Here, we show that nanopatterning of the anisotropy landscape with a He$^+$-ion beam creates well-defined skyrmion nucleation sites, thereby transforming the skyrmion localization into a deterministic process. This approach allows to realize control of individual skyrmion nucleation as well as guided skyrmion motion with nanometer-scale precision, which is pivotal for both future fundamental studies of skyrmion dynamics and applications.

Abstract

The Nuclotron-base Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), with commissioning of the facility expected in late 2022. The Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) has been designed to operate at NICA and its components are currently in production. The detector is expected to be ready for data taking with the first beams from NICA. This document provides an overview of the landscape of the investigation of the QCD phase diagram in the region of maximum baryonic density, where NICA and MPD will be able to provide significant and unique input. It also provides a detailed description of the MPD set-up, including its various subsystems as well as its support and computing infrastructures.
