We analyze the spatial dynamics of polarized atom vapor and present a mathematical method to eliminate the diffusion effect partially. It is found that the diffusion effect of polarized atoms can be regarded as a low pass filter in spatial frequency domain and fits well with a Butterworth filter. The fitted spatial filter can be used to restore the original magnetic image before being blurred by the diffusion, thus improving the magnetic spatial resolution. The results of spatial dynamics simulation and magnetic image restoration show the potential usage of this method in magnetic gradiometer and atomic magnetic microscopy.

The transition between the proto-star, Class I, and the pre-main sequence star, Class II, phases is still one of the most uncertain, and important, stages in the knowledge of the process of formation of an individual star, because it is the stage that determines the final mass of the star. We observed the YSO "Holoea", associated with IRAS 05327+3404, which was classified as an object in transition between the Class I and Class II phases with several unusual properties, and appears to be surrounded by large amounts of circumstellar material. We used the SMA and BIMA telescopes at millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths to observe the dust continuum emission and the CO (1-0) and (2-1), HCO+ (1-0) and (3-2), and HCN (1-0) transitions in the region around IRAS 05327+3404. We detected two continuum emission peaks at 1.1-mm: SMM 1, the sub-mm counterpart of IRAS 05327+3404, and SMM 2, ~6 arcsec to the West. The emissions of the three molecules show marked differences. The CO emission near the systemic velocity is filtered out by the telescopes, and CO mostly traces the high-velocity gas. The HCO+ and HCN emissions are more centrally concentrated around the central parts of the region, and show several intensity peaks coincident with the sub-mm continuum peaks. We identify two main molecular outflows: a bipolar outflow in an E-W direction that would be powered by SMM 1 and another one in a NE direction, which we associate with SMM 2. We propose that the SMM sources are probably Class I objects, with SMM 1 in an earlier evolutionary stage., Comment: 17 pages, 2 tables, 19 figures, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

Using the recently-commissioned Submillimeter Array (SMA), we have detected several complex organic molecules, including (CH3)2O, C2H5OH, C2H5CN, and tentatively CH2CDCN, toward the protostellar hot cores of IRAS 16293-2422 at arcsecond-resolution (~< 400 AU in radius). Vibrationally excited transitions of SO, SO2 and HCN with energy levels up to 1800 K were also observed. In addition to the other organic molecules (HC3N, CH2CO, CH3OH, CH2CHCN and HCOOCH3) previously reported by us (Kuan et al. 2004), these results clearly indicate the existence of a rich organic chemistry in low-mass `hot corinos'. From the observation of optically thin HC15N emission, we conclude I16293A is a rotating circumstellar disk lying along the north-south direction ~10 deg to the east and with an inclination ~30 deg to the sky. We suggest that the observed vibrational SO and SO2 emission may originate from shock waves near or in the circumstellar disks. Between the two cores, we find a strong anticorrelation in emission from C2H5OH and C2H5CN. The relative contribution of gas phase and grain-surface chemistries to the production of the observed complex molecules is discussed. We point out the shortcomings underlying recent claims that all the O-bearing organics are formed on grains. The presence of so many well-known interstellar molecules in solar-type hot corinos strengthens the link between molecular cloud chemistry, the starting materials of protoplanetary disks such as the protosolar nebula, and the composition of comets. Establishing the fine details of this connection is crucial in answering fundamental questions concerning the importance of galactic astrochemistry for astrobiology., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Advances in Space Research

Arcsecond-resolution spectral observations toward the protobinary system IRAS 16293-2422 at 344 and 354 GHz were conducted using the Submillimeter Array. Complex organic molecules such as CH3OH and HCOOCH3 were detected. We present results from an observing campaign of the molecular content of the coma of comet C/1999 S4 (LINEAR) carried out jointly with the millimeter-arrays of the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland Association (BIMA) and the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO). Using the BIMA array in autocorrelation (`single-dish') mode, we detected weak HCN J=1-0 emission from comet C/1999 S4 (LINEAR) at 14 +- 4 mK km/s averaged over the 143" beam. The three days over which emission was detected, 2000 July 21.9-24.2, immediately precede the reported full breakup of the nucleus of this comet. During this same period, we find an upper limit for HCN 1-0 of 144 mJy/beam km/s (203 mK km/s) in the 9"x12" synthesized beam of combined observations of BIMA and OVRO in cross-correlation (`imaging') mode. Together with reported values of HCN 1-0 emission in the 28" IRAM 30-meter beam, our data probe the spatial distribution of the HCN emission from radii of 1300 to 19,000 km. Using literature results of HCN excitation in cometary comae, we find that the relative line fluxes in the 12"x9", 28" and 143" beams are consistent with expectations for a nuclear source of HCN and expansion of the volatile gases and evaporating icy grains following a Haser model., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures. We report the observation of the decay mode B -> phi phi K based on an analysis of 78 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. This is the first example of a b -> s sbar s sbar s transition. The branching fraction for this decay is measured to be B(B^{+-} -> phi phi K^{+-}) = (2.6 ^{+1.1}_{-0.9} +- 0.3) x 10^{-6} for a phi phi invariant mass below 2.85 GeV/c^2. Recent results of rare B decay analyses based on 31.9 million $B\bar{B}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collider are presented. We have made the first observation of charmless baryonic decay $B^\pm \to p \bar{p} K^\pm$, the three-body $B^0 \to K^0 \pi^+ \pi^-$ and $B^0 \to K^0 K^+ K^-$. The measured branching fractions are $\mathcal{B}(B^+\to p \bar{p} K^+) = (4.3^{+1.1}_{-0.9} \pm 0.5)\times 10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}(B^0{\to}K^0\pi^+\pi^-) = (\brkspp) \times 10^{-6}$, and ${\mathcal{B}}(B^0{\to}K^0 K^+ K^-) = (\brkskk) \times 10^{-6}$. We also see strong evidence of $B^\pm \to \eta K^\pm$ and $B^\pm \to \eta \pi^\pm$, and observed the decay $B^\pm \to \omega K^\pm$ with $\mathcal{B}(B^\pm \to \omega K^\pm) = (9.9^{+2.7}_{-2.4} \pm 1.0) \times 10^{-6}$. Preliminary results of improved measurements of the branching fractions for the decays $B \to K \pi$ and $\pi \pi$ are reported. We review recent studies of organic molecule formation in dense molecular clouds and in comets. We summarise the known organic inventories of molecular clouds and recent comets, particularly Hale-Bopp. The principal chemical formation pathways involving gas phase reactions, as well as formation by catalytic reactions on grain surfaces or through dust fragmentation, are identified for both dense clouds and cometary comae. The processes leading to organic molecules with known biological function, carbon chains, deuterium fractionation, HNC and S-bearing compounds are described. A preliminary investigation was carried out by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the impact of regional ozone concentrations on climate change in the country. The main objective of the investigation was to enhance the ability of air quality managers to consider global change in their decisions through improved characterization of the potential effects of global change on air quality, including O3, PM, and Hg. An integrated assessment framework was designed that supported the research and development efforts within the EPA and the academic research professionals. This design recognized the challenges of bridging spatial scales, temporal scales, and disciplines that characterize the global change and regional air quality problem. A major component of the assessment approach involved the development and application of global to regional climate and air quality modeling systems.
