Weyl semimetals have been intensely studied as a three dimensional realization of a Dirac-like excitation spectrum where the conduction bands and valence bands touch at isolated Weyl points in momentum space. Like in graphene, this property entails various peculiar electronic properties. However, recent theoretical studies have suggested that resonant scattering from rare regions can give rise to a non-zero density of states even at charge neutrality. Here, we give a detailed account of this effect and demonstrate how the semimetallic nature is suppressed at the lowest scales. To this end, we develop a self-consistent T-matrix approach to investigate the density of states beyond the limit of weak disorder. Our results show a nonvanishing density of states at the Weyl point which exhibits a non-analytic dependence on the impurity density. This unusually strong effect of rare regions leads to a revised estimate for the conductivity close to the Weyl point and emphasizes possible deviations from semimetallic behavior in dirty Weyl semimetals at charge neutrality even with very low impurity concentration., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

The sliding Luttinger liquids (LL) approach is applied to study fractional topological insulators (FTI). We show that FTI is the low energy fixed point of the theory for realistic spin-orbit and electron-electron interaction. We find that the topological phase pertains in the presence of interaction that breaks the spin invariance and its boundaries are even extended by those terms. Finally we show that one dimensional chiral anomaly in the LL leads to the emergence of topological Chern-Simons terms in the effective gauge theory of the FTI state., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures. The rich phase diagram of quantum spin-ladder systems has attracted much attention in the theoretical literature. The progress in experimental realisations of this fascinating physics however has been much slower. While materials with a ladder-like structure exist, one always has coupling between the ladders to muddy the waters. In addition, such materials exhibit limited (if any) tunability in terms of the magnetic exchange parameters, and experimental probing of the different phases is a great challenge. In this work, we show that a realisation of spin-ladder physics can occur in an engineered nanostructure made out of bilayer graphene in the zero-filling quantum Hall state. Specifically, we describe a split-double-gated setup in which a domain wall is explicitly induced in the middle of the sample, and show that an effective spin-ladder forms along this domain wall. The interaction strengths of the ladder are tunable by adjusting magnetic and electric fields as well as the spacing between the gates. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the effective spin ladder has a helical nature, meaning that the spin-correlations may be probed rather simply with charge transport experiments. We consider the zero-filled quantum-Hall ferromagnetic state of bilayer graphene subject to a kink-like perpendicular electric field, which generates domain walls in the electronic state and low-energy collective modes confined to move along them. In particular, it is shown that two pairs of collective helical modes are formed at opposite sides of the kink, each pair consisting of modes with identical helicities. We derive an effective field-theoretical model of these modes in terms of two weakly coupled anisotropic quantum spin-ladders, with parameters tunable through control of the electric and magnetic fields. This yields a rich phase diagram, where due to the helical nature of the modes, distinct phases possess very different charge conduction properties. We study transport properties of the helical edge states of two-dimensional integer and fractional topological insulators via double constrictions. Such constrictions couple the upper and lower edges of the sample, and can be made and tuned by adding side gates to the system. Using renormalization group and duality mapping, we analyze phase diagrams and transport properties in each of these cases. Most interesting is the case of two constrictions tuned to resonance, where we obtain Kondo behavior, with a tunable Kondo temperature. Moving away from resonance gives the possibility of a metal-insulator transition at some finite detuning. For integer topological insulators, this physics is predicted to occur for realistic interaction strengths and gives a conductance $G$ with two temperature $T$ scales where the sign of $dG/dT$ changes; one being related to the Kondo temperature while the other is related to the detuning.

We investigate interaction-induced valley domain walls in bilayer graphene in the $\nu=0$ quantum Hall state, subject to a perpendicular electric field that is antisymmetric across a line in the sample. Such a state can be realized in a double-gated suspended sample, where the electric field changes sign across a line in the middle. The non-interacting energy spectrum of the ground state is characterized by a sharp domain wall between two valley-polarized regions. Using the Hartree-Fock approximation, we find that the Coulomb interaction opens a gap between the two lowest-lying states near the Fermi level, yielding a smooth domain wall with a kink configuration in the valley index. Our results suggest the possibility to visualize the domain wall via measuring the charge density difference between the two graphene layers, which we find exhibits a characteristic pattern. The width of the kink and the resulting pattern can be tuned by the interplay between the magnetic field and gate electric fields.

We investigate how the strain-induced nuclear quadrupole interaction influences the degree of nuclear spin polarization in self-assembled quantum dots. Our calculation shows that the achievable nuclear spin polarization in In_{x}Ga_{1-x}As quantum dots is related to the concentration of indium and the resulting strain distribution in the dots. The interplay between the nuclear quadrupole interaction and Zeeman splitting leads to interesting features in the magnetic field dependence of the nuclear spin polarization.
