Abstract Background Danggui Buxue Tang (DBT) is a historical Chinese herbal decoction, and which has more than 800 years of applications. This herbal decoction solely contains two materials: Astragali Radix (AR) and Angelicae Sinensis Radix (ASR) at a weight ratio of 5:1. Clinically, DBT aims to improve anemia syndrome. In complementary and alternative medicine theory, the cause of neurodegenerative disease is proposed to be related with anemia. In line to this notion, low levels of hemoglobin and red blood cell have been reported in patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a chronic neurodegenerative disease caused by β-amyloid peptide (Aβ) accumulation. Therefore, we would like to probe the neuroprotective functions of this ancient herbal formula in vitro. Method The neuroprotective effects of DBT in the Aβ-induced cell death were detected in cultured cortical neurons by multiple techniques, i.e. confocal and western blot. Results In the cultures, application of DBT reduced Aβ-induced apoptosis rate in a dose-dependent manner. In Aβ-treated cortical neurons, the expression ratio of Bcl2 to Bax was altered by DBT. In parallel, application of DBT markedly suppressed the Aβ-induced expressions of apoptotic markers, i.e. cleaved-caspase 3/9 and PARP. Conclusion Taken these results, DBT shows promising protective effects against Aβ-induced stress or insult in cultured neurons.

Danggui Buxue Tang (DBT), an ancient Chinese herbal decoction commonly used to mitigate menopausal osteoporosis, contains two herbs: Astragali Radix (AR) and Angelicae Sinensis Radix (ASR). The exact efficacy of individual chemical(s) within DBT, or in any herbal mixture, is hard to be revealed. Calycosin and ferulic acid have been reported to be the predominant chemicals found within DBT, and its roles in regulating osteoblastic differentiation have been proposed here. To probe the roles of calycosin and ferulic acid, these chemicals were specifically depleted from the DBT extracts. Here, calycosin-depleted DBT (DBTΔcal) and ferulic acid-depleted DBT (DBTΔfa), generated by semi-preparative HPLC, were coupled with RNA-seq and metabolomics analyses to reveal the synergistic functions of individual chemicals within a complex herbal mixture. The expressions of osteogenic differentiation markers were significantly increased under the treatments of DBT and DBTΔfa. The DBT-induced genes were markedly reduced in the absent of calycosin, i.e., DBTΔcal. In cultured osteoblasts, the DBT-activated Wnt/β-catenin and MAPK/Erk and signaling pathways were greatly affected when calycosin was depleted. By metabolomics analysis in DBT-treated osteoblasts, the profile of metabolites triggered by DBTΔcal showed distinction to that of DBT and/or DBTΔfa. Thus, our findings indicated that calycosin, rather than ferulic acid, could be an indispensable chemical in DBT to orchestrate multi-components of DBT in achieving maximal osteogenic properties.

Astragali Radix (AR), a Chinese materia medica (CMM) known as Huangqi, is an important medicine prescribed in herbal composite formulae (Fufang) by Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioners for thousands of years. According to the literature, AR is suggested for patients suffering from “Qi”- and “Blood”-deficiencies, and its clinical effects are reported to be related to anti-cancer cell proliferation, anti-oxidation, relief of complications in cardiovascular diseases, etc. The underlying cell signaling pathways involved in the regulation of these various diseases are presented here to support the mechanisms of action of AR. There are two botanical sources recorded in China Pharmacopoeia (CP, 2015): Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bge. Var. mongohlicus, (Bge.) Hsiao, and Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bge. (Fam. Leguminosae), whose extracts of dried roots are processed via homogenization-assisted negative pressure cavitation extraction. Geographic factors and extraction methods have impacts on the pharmaceutical and chemical profiles of AR. Therefore, the levels of the major bioactive constituents of AR, including polysaccharides, saponins, and flavonoids, may not be consistent in different batches of extract, and the pharmaceutical efficacy of these bioactive ingredients may vary depending on the source. Therefore, the present review mainly focuses on the consistency of the available sources of AR and extracts and on the investigation of the biological functions and mechanisms of action of AR and of its major bioactive constituents. Furthermore, it will also include a discussion of the most popular AR composite formulae to further elucidate their chemical and biological profiles and understand the pharmaceutical value of AR.

Ferulic acid, a phenolic acid derived mainly from a Chinese herb Angelica Sinensis Radix (ASR), was reported to reduce the formation of free radicals. Danggui Buxue Tang (DBT), a herbal decoction composing of Astragali Radix (AR) and ASR, has been utilized for more than 800 years in China having known anti-oxidative property. Ferulic acid is a major active ingredient in DBT; however, the role of ferulic acid within the herbal mixture has not been resolved. In order to elucidate the function of ferulic acid within this herbal decoction, a ferulic acid-depleted herbal decoction was created and named as DBTΔfa. The anti-oxidative properties of chemically modified DBT decoction were systemically compared in cultured H9C2 rat cardiomyoblast cell line. The application of DBT and DBTΔfa into the cultures showed functions in (i) decreasing the reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, detected by laser confocal; (ii) increasing of the activation of Akt; (iii) increasing the transcriptional activity of anti-oxidant response element (ARE); and (iv) increasing the expressions of anti-oxidant enzymes, i.e. NQO1 and GCLM. In all scenario, the aforementioned anti-oxidative properties of DBTΔfa in H9C2 cells were significantly reduced, as compared to authentic DBT. Thus, ferulic acid could be an indispensable chemical in DBT to orchestrate multi-components of DBT as to achieve maximal anti-oxidative functions.

Abstract Optical properties of cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers (CLCEs) can be tuned by an external field, however, it will spontaneously restore to the original state after the field is removed. Here, we introduce diselenide dynamic covalent bonds (DCBs) into CLCEs, whose optical properties can be reversibly and precisely tuned under the combined action of force and light. The tuned optical properties will be written into and remembered by the CLCEs, thus a programming effect is achieved. The prepared dynamical diselenide bonded CLCE films have the typical reversibly mechanochromism property, and high-resolution colourful patterning can be programmed by adjusting exposure time and intensity of masked visible-light under different tensile or compressive strain states. The DCB-CLCEs combine the novel anisotropy of CLCEs and the dynamic chain exchangeable ability of DCBs, which endows the materials with reprogrammable optical properties. We demonstrate a simple strategy of writing naked-eye high-resolution colourful patterning into a film with mechanochromism property by thermal or visible-light, it shows great potential in display devices, anticounterfeiting labels, sensors, optical films and smart materials.

Abstract The design and fabrication of advanced soft actuators with programmable actuation are highly desirable in constructing intelligent soft robots. In this work, a programmable light‐driven liquid crystalline network (LCN)‐based soft actuator was judiciously designed and prepared by constructing structural anisotropy across the thickness of the film. A three‐dimensional (3D) deformable LCN actuator was realized by polymerization‐induced phase separation of small‐molar‐weight monomers and polymer networks. The resultant anisotropic LCN displays anisotropic microscale nanoporous architecture across the thickness in addition to uniform alignment at the molecular scale. The actuation behaviors of LCN film are tunable by adjusting the size and distribution of nanopores in LCN bulk via changing polymerization conditions and monomer components. More importantly, the nanoporous LCN film can be harnessed as a promising template to achieve diverse light responsiveness by changing the photothermal dyes via a feasible washing and refilling process, demonstrating a reprogrammable light‐driven soft actuator.

BackgroundThe increasing use of ChatGPT in clinical practice and medical education necessitates the evaluation of its reliability, particularly in geriatrics. ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate ChatGPT’s trustworthiness in geriatrics through 3 distinct approaches: evaluating ChatGPT’s geriatrics attitude, knowledge, and clinical application with 2 vignettes of geriatric syndromes (polypharmacy and falls). MethodsWe used the validated University of California, Los Angeles, geriatrics attitude and knowledge instruments to evaluate ChatGPT’s geriatrics attitude and knowledge and compare its performance with that of medical students, residents, and geriatrics fellows from reported results in the literature. We also evaluated ChatGPT’s application to 2 vignettes of geriatric syndromes (polypharmacy and falls). ResultsThe mean total score on geriatrics attitude of ChatGPT was significantly lower than that of trainees (medical students, internal medicine residents, and geriatric medicine fellows; 2.7 vs 3.7 on a scale from 1-5; 1=strongly disagree; 5=strongly agree). The mean subscore on positive geriatrics attitude of ChatGPT was higher than that of the trainees (medical students, internal medicine residents, and neurologists; 4.1 vs 3.7 on a scale from 1 to 5 where a higher score means a more positive attitude toward older adults). The mean subscore on negative geriatrics attitude of ChatGPT was lower than that of the trainees and neurologists (1.8 vs 2.8 on a scale from 1 to 5 where a lower subscore means a less negative attitude toward aging). On the University of California, Los Angeles geriatrics knowledge test, ChatGPT outperformed all medical students, internal medicine residents, and geriatric medicine fellows from validated studies (14.7 vs 11.3 with a score range of –18 to +18 where +18 means that all questions were answered correctly). Regarding the polypharmacy vignette, ChatGPT not only demonstrated solid knowledge of potentially inappropriate medications but also accurately identified 7 common potentially inappropriate medications and 5 drug-drug and 3 drug-disease interactions. However, ChatGPT missed 5 drug-disease and 1 drug-drug interaction and produced 2 hallucinations. Regarding the fall vignette, ChatGPT answered 3 of 5 pretests correctly and 2 of 5 pretests partially correctly, identified 6 categories of fall risks, followed fall guidelines correctly, listed 6 key physical examinations, and recommended 6 categories of fall prevention methods. ConclusionsThis study suggests that ChatGPT can be a valuable supplemental tool in geriatrics, offering reliable information with less age bias, robust geriatrics knowledge, and comprehensive recommendations for managing 2 common geriatric syndromes (polypharmacy and falls) that are consistent with evidence from guidelines, systematic reviews, and other types of studies. ChatGPT’s potential as an educational and clinical resource could significantly benefit trainees, health care providers, and laypeople. Further research using GPT-4o, larger geriatrics question sets, and more geriatric syndromes is needed to expand and confirm these findings before adopting ChatGPT widely for geriatrics education and practice.

Recognizing and assessing the value of ecosystem services (ESV) is crucial for ecosystem management, conservation, and the promotion of sustainable development. Land use/cover change (LUCC) plays an important role in evaluating regional ESV. In this study, the ESV of Sanya City in 2000, 2010, and 2020 was evaluated using the equivalent coefficient method. Additionally, the Future land-use simulation (FLUS) model was employed to predict land-use changes in 2030 under five different scenarios. Factors influencing ESV and their interactions were analysed using convergent cross mapping (CCM) and global sensitivity and uncertainty analysis (GSUA). The results indicated that, from 2000 to 2020, forest, cultivated land and unutilized land areas decreased by 61.28 km2, 46.32 km2, and 1.91 km2, respectively, while water areas increased by 8.29 km2 and construction land expanded by 102.53 km2. Overall, ESV showed a fluctuating but overall declining trend, with values of 75.59 × 108 yuan in 2000, 78.23 × 108 yuan in 2010, and 74.59 × 108 yuan in 2020. High ESV were predominantly found in inland areas, while low values were prevalent in the coastal built-up areas. Based on Ecological Protection and Synthetical Protection Scenarios, ESVs in 2030 were projected to increase by 2.78 × 108 yuan and 2.26 × 108 yuan, respectively, when compared to the Natural Development Scenario, due to the restricted conversion of cultivated land and forest into construction land. This study found that Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and population had significant impacts on ESV, while forest and water areas exhibited notable individual impact. Considering the LUCC characteristics and land-use strategies in Sanya, the Synthetical Protection Scenario was identified as the optimal choice to balance the red line between farmland and the ecological development of civilization. This study recommends the reasonable planning of urban construction land, the expansion of urban green space, and the strengthening of ecological land conservation. These findings offer valuable theoretical insights for the sustainable development of Sanya City.

Abstract This review explores the mechanisms underlying alcohol‐induced oesophageal carcinogenesis, including DNA damage, oxidative stress, and nutritional deficiencies. Alcohol metabolism primarily involves alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) converting ethanol to acetaldehyde, which can cause DNA damage, inhibit repair mechanisms, and form DNA adducts thus inhibiting DNA replication. Plus, it delves into the epidemiological evidence, genetic susceptibility, epigenetic modifications, biomarkers, and preventive strategies associated with alcohol‐related oesophageal cancers. Consumption of alcohol increases the risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease thus compromising mucosal integrity of the oesophagus as dysregulation of cytokines such as IL‐18, TNFA, GATA3, TLR4, and CD68 expands the intercellular spaces of epithelial cells. Genetic variants, such as ADH1B rs1229984 and ALDH2 rs671, significantly influence susceptibility to alcohol‐related oesophageal cancers, with these variations affecting acetaldehyde metabolism and cancer risk. Understanding these factors is crucial for early detection, effective treatment, and the development of targeted prevention strategies. Biomarkers, such as miRNA and metabolite markers, offer non‐invasive methods for early detection, while advanced endoscopic techniques provide better diagnostic accuracy. Pharmacological interventions, such as statins and proton pump inhibitors, also show potential for reducing cancer progression in high‐risk individuals. Despite advances, late‐stage oesophageal cancer diagnoses are still common, highlighting the need for better screening and prevention. Further research, including this study, should aim to improve early detection, personalise prevention, and explore new treatments to reduce cases and enhance outcomes in alcohol‐related oesophageal cancers.

Abstract The global energy system transforming from fossil fuels to renewable green energy through the adaption of innovative and dynamic green technologies. Energy‐saving buildings (ESBs) are attracting extensive attention as intelligent architectures capable of significantly reducing the energy consumption for heating, air‐conditioning, and lighting. They provide comfortable working and living environment by regulating and harnessing solar energy. Smart photovoltaic windows (SPWs) offer a promising platform for designing ESBs due to their unique feature. They can modulate solar energy based on dynamic color switching behavior under external stimuli and generate electrical power by harvesting solar energy. In this review, the‐state‐of‐art of strategies and technologies are summarized putting SPWs toward high‐efficiency ESBs. The SPWs are systematically categorized according to the working principle and functional component. For each type of SPWs, material and architecture engineering are focused on to optimize operation mode, optical modulation capability, photovoltaic performance and durability for giving ESBs flexible manipulation, extraordinary energy‐saving effect, and high electricity power. In addition, the challenges and opportunities in this cutting‐edge research area are discussed, with the aim of promoting the development of advanced multifunctional SPWs and their application in high efficiency ESBs.

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved remarkable success in various computer vision tasks. However, the lack of interpretability in these models has raised concerns and hindered their widespread adoption in critical domains. Generating activation maps that highlight the regions contributing to the CNN's decision has emerged as a popular approach to visualize and interpret these models. Nevertheless, existing methods often produce activation maps contaminated with irrelevant background noise or incomplete object activation, limiting their effectiveness in providing meaningful explanations. To address this challenge, we propose Union Class Activation Mapping (UnionCAM), an innovative visual interpretation framework that generates high-quality class activation maps (CAMs) through a novel three-step approach. UnionCAM introduces a weighted fusion strategy that adaptively combines multiple CAMs to create more informative and comprehensive activation maps. First, the denoising module removes background noise from CAMs by using adaptive thresholding. Subsequently, the union module fuses the denoised CAMs with region-based CAMs using a weighted combination scheme to obtain more comprehensive and informative maps, which we refer to as fused CAMs. Lastly, the activation map selection module automatically selects the optimal CAM that offers the best interpretation from the pool of fused CAMs. Extensive experiments on ILSVRC2012 and VOC2007 datasets demonstrate UnionCAM's superior performance over state-of-the-art methods. It effectively suppresses background noise, captures complete object regions, and provides intuitive visual explanations. UnionCAM achieves significant improvements in insertion and deletion scores, outperforming the best baseline. UnionCAM makes notable contributions by introducing a novel denoising strategy, adaptive fusion of CAMs, and an automatic selection mechanism. It bridges the gap between CNN performance and interpretability, providing a valuable tool for understanding and trusting CNN-based systems. UnionCAM has the potential to foster responsible deployment of CNNs in real-world applications.

To examine flavor variations in Xuanwei ham due to different cooking methods, we selected one-year cured Xuanwei ham and applied four techniques: dry frying (DF), baking (BA), steaming (ST), and boiling (BO). Organoleptic evaluation revealed ST received the highest overall sensory score. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) revealed that the total nucleotide content was significantly different (P 1). This study aimed to support comprehensive research on the flavor characteristics of cooked Xuanwei ham and guide the selection of appropriate processing methods.

IntroductionTropical cloud forest ecosystems are expected to face reduced water inputs due to climatic changes.MethodsHere, we study the ecophysiological responses of trees and epiphytes within in an Asian cloud forest to investigate the contributions of rainfall, fog, and soil to leaf water in 60 tree and 30 vascular epiphyte species. We measured multiple functional traits, and δ2H, and δ18O isotope ratios for leaf water, soil water, rainfall, and fog in the wettest (July) and driest (February) months. Using a Bayesian stable isotope mixing model, we quantified the relative contributions of soil water, fog, and rainfall to leaf water.Results and discussionRainfall contributes almost all the leaf water of the epiphytes in July, whereas fog is the major source in February. Epiphytes cannot tap xylem water from host trees, and hence depended on fog water when rainfall was low. Most of leaf water was absorbed from soil water in July, while fog was an important source for leaf water in February despite the soil moisture content value was high. In February, lower temperatures, along with reduced photosynthesis and transpiration rates, likely contributed to decreased soil water uptake, while maintaining higher soil moisture levels despite the limited rainfall. These contrasting contributions of different water sources to leaf water under low and high rainfall and for different plant groups outline the community-level ecophysiological responses to changes in rainfall. While direct measurements of water flux, particularly in roots and stems, are needed, our results provide valuable insights on tropical cloud forest hydrology under scenarios of decreased fog immersion due to climatic changes.

Akebia trifoliata, as a new fruit, is becoming competitive and popular in the markets of eastern Asian countries, especially China, because of its nutritional value and health-promoting functions. To ultimately develop seedless varieties, germinating seeds of the A. trifoliata monoembryonic line ‘710’ with ∼1.5-cm-long roots were treated with five different concentrations of colchicine (0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4%, and 0.5%) for four soaking periods (12, 24, 36, and 48 hours). Ploidy level assessments via both flow cytometry and karyotype analysis revealed some autotetraploids and chimeras in surviving seedlings treated with both 0.4% and 0.5% colchicine for 48 h, but the highest autotetraploid (33.3%) and chimera (19.0%) rates were observed in surviving seedlings treated with 0.3% colchicine for a 12-hour soaking period; no autotetraploids or chimeras were detected in plants treated with only water. In addition, we also found that autotetraploid plants usually presented broader and thicker leaves with larger stomas and epidermic cortical cells. Notably, no autotetraploid of A. trifoliata has been reported previously; therefore, both autotetraploids and chimeras are valuable breeding parents for autotriploid seedless varieties and ideal materials for further theoretical studies.

Abstract Background The eastern edge of the Qinghai‒Tibet Plateau (QTP) and subtropical China have various regions where plant species originate and thrive, but these regions have been the focus of very few integrative studies. Here, we elucidated the phylogeographic structure of a continuous and widespread Akebia trifoliata population across these two regions. Results Sixty-one populations consisting of 391 genotypes were examined to assess population diversity and structure via network distribution analysis, maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree reconstruction, divergence time estimation, demographic history inference, and ancestral area reconstruction of both conserved internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and chloroplast (rps16) DNA sequences. The results showed that the ITS region was more variable than the rps16 region and could be suitable for studying intraspecific phylogeography. The A. trifoliata population displayed high genetic diversity, genetic differentiation and obvious phylogeographical structure, possibly originating on the eastern QTP, expanding during the last glacial-interglacial cycle, diverging in the early Pleistocene and middle Pleistocene, and extensively migrating thereafter. The migration route from west to east along rivers could be largely responsible for the long-distance dispersal of this species, while three main refuges (Qinba Mountains, Nanling Mountains and Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau) with multiple ice shelters facilitated its wide distribution. Conclusions Our results suggested that the from west to east long migration accompanying with the minor short reciprocal migration in the south-north direction, and the three main refuges (the Qinba Mountains, Nanling Mountains and Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau) contributed to the extant geographical distribution of A. trifoliata. In addition, this finding also strongly reduced the discrepancy between glacial contraction and postglacial expansion and the in situ survival hypothesis by simultaneously considering the existence of many similar climate-related ecological niches and migration influences.

IntroductionA critical issue in tropical forests is that anthropogenic deforestation (i.e., mining) degrades the integrity of its ecosystem. Reforestation with appropriate native plant species helps to alleviate these detrimental impacts. A protocol to select appropriate plant species for this purpose currently lacks efficacy and timeliness.MethodsWe provided a trait-based protocol to quickly and effectively select native plant species for mining reforestation. A 0.2-km2 area of Baopoling (BPL) at Hainan Island, China, was used as a study site, which has been severely degraded by 20 years of limestone mining for cement production. First, we identified the tree species in nearby undisturbed tropical forests, followed by evaluating the similarities in functional traits of the most dominant one (target species) and 60 local candidate native plant species (candidate species) whose saplings can be purchased from a local market.Results and discussionThis dataset was used in our trait-based protocol, and only within 1 month, we successfully selected eight plant species which are very similar to target species from the 60 candidate species. We also quantified whether the eight selected plant species were indeed suitable for sustained reforestation by testing their effects on landscape and also their survival rate and recruitment ability after using them to perform reforestation in BPL from 2016 to 2023. Finally, these eight plant species are indeed suitable for reforestation due to their huge influences on a significant shift from originally degraded landscape (comprising only barren rocks) to a forest landscape totally and also their high survival rate (90%–97%) and ability for natural recruitment after 7 years’ reforestation in BPL. Thus, we anticipate that this protocol would be integral to species selection during reforestation of tropical mining areas.

To achieve all-organic polymer with high dielectric performances, we have designed a novel side-chain liquid crystalline polymer (P7) with strong polar mesogen of (Z)-4-(2-cyano-2-phenylvinyl)benzonitrile (CSCN) attached to polycyclooctene backbone. The bis-cyano-substituted CSCN is board-shaped and exhibits a large dipole moment (8.54 D) which tilts ∼34.2° away from its molecular long axis. Consequently, CSCN shows unique dual molecular anisotropy: one from biaxial shape anisotropy and the other from polarization anisotropy. The complex phase behaviors of P7 were investigated employing mainly the techniques of differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. Four liquid crystal (LC) phases are identified as K0, K1, K2 and K3, which are SmA, highly-ordered biaxial SmA, B5-like and B7-like, respectively, with the thermal stability increased in sequence. The experimental results indicate that the different LC phases are arisen from the competition and balance between π-π stacking and dipole-dipole interaction. While the face-to-face π-π stacking is dominant in K0 and K1, optimizing the dipole-dipole interaction causes the CSCN mesogens within the smectic layer to tilt and rotate, resulting in K2 and K3. We further investigated the dielectric properties of P7 films using polarization-electric field loops test. The dielectric constant (εr) of P7 is found to be LC structure dependent, which is increased when the LC phase is varied from K0 to K3. With an average εr of 9.7 achieved in K3 and the low dielectric loss (tan δ = 0.001), P7 film offers a promising material in advanced applications like energy storage and electronic devices.

Akebia trifoliata is an economically important, self-incompatible fruit tree in the Lardizabalaceae family. Asexual propagation is the main strategy used to maintain excellent agronomic traits. However, the generation of adventitious roots during asexual propagation is very difficult. To study the important role of the WUSCHEL-related homeobox (WOX) transcription factor in adventitious root growth and development, we characterized this transcription factor family in the whole genome of A. trifoliata. A total of 10 AktWOXs were identified, with the following characteristics: length (657~11,328 bp), exon number (2~5), isoelectric point (5.65~9.03), amino acid number (176~361 AA) and molecular weight (20.500~40.173 kDa), and their corresponding expression sequence could also be detectable in the public transcriptomic data for A. trifoliata fruit. A total of 10 AktWOXs were classified into modern (6), intermediate (2) and ancient clades (2) and all AktWOXs had undergone strong purifying selection during evolution. The expression profile of AktWOXs during A. trifoliata adventitious root formation indicated that AktWOXs play an important role in the regulation of adventitious root development. Overall, this is the first study to identify and characterize the WOX family in A. trifoliata and will be helpful for further research on A. trifoliata adventitious root formation.

Abstract Liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) have gained tremendous attention in recent years due to their great potentials from fabrication of responsive actuators and sensors to construction of intelligent soft robotic and light modulators. However, conventional LCPs with permanent cross‐links present tedious and unmodifiable stimuli‐responsiveness. Recently, dynamic bonds capable to reversibly break and reform have been integrated into LCP, imparting intrinsic dynamic characteristics. The dynamic LCP possesses unprecedented diverse functionalities including reprogrammability, recyclability, and self‐healing ability, becoming much more adaptive to surrounding environmental changes compared with the conventional counterpart. In this review, recent progress of dynamic bond‐based LCPs is summarized. The mechanism, preparation, and functionalities of dynamic LCPs based on dynamic noncovalent bond (DNCB) and dynamic covalent bond (DCB) are poised to be discussed, followed by introducing emergent LCPs combining both of DNCB and DCB. Consequently, the unique functionalities of dynamic bond‐based LCPs will be given. Finally, outlooks of development of the dynamic bond‐based LCPs are presented.

Background Atherosclerosis has been recognized as a chronic inflammation initiated by dysfunction of endothelial cell that contributes to the increased morbidity and mortality of severe cardiovascular events. The reported important role of microRNA-98 (miR-98) in regulation of endothelial cell behaviors prompt us to hypothesize that miR-98 could be involved in the process of atherosclerosis. Methods and Results The current research showed the miR-98 expression was gradually down-regulated in atherosclerotic mouse arteries isolated from ApoE ablation mice subjected to high fat diet. Additionally, a dramatically reduced miR-98 expression in endothelial cells administrated to oxidized low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) but a slight down-regulated level was found in macrophages. Functionally, attenuated miR-98 expression promoted secretion of chemokines and adhesion molecules in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) induced by Ox-LDL, which subsequently increased infiltration and pro-inflammatory genes expression of macrophages, as well as the foam cell formation. Mechanistically, in vitro experiments indicated that the endothelial cell dysfunction regulated by miR-98 knockdown was partially contributed by upregulated expression of HMGB1. Furthermore, the animal experiment with ApoE−/− mice administrated with miR-98 inhibitor demonstrated that miR-98 silencing enhanced the atherosclerotic lesions in aorta and aortic sinus that were accompanied with increased adhesion molecules, chemokines, and pro-inflammatory markers expression. Conclusion MicroRNA-98 knockdown promoted endothelial cell dysfunction to affect the inflammatory state of macrophage and the development of atherosclerosis, at least partially, through direct targeting HMGB1. Collected, these data suggested that miR-98 could be a novel drug target for atherogenesis management.

The magnetic properties and microstructure of NiFe films deposited via ion beam deposition (IBD), pulsed, and static magnetron sputtering techniques are studied. Results show that grain size is the same among NiFe films with the same thickness regardless of the deposition technique. However, IBD films have superior (111) texture and crystallinity. It is shown that the superior magnetic properties of IBD Ta/NiFe films are due to their high crystallographic quality.

Spin valve films with synthetic antiferromagnetic CoFe/Ru/CoFe/IrMn were developed. Synthetic spin valve films were found to have large giant magnetoresistance ratio and large effective exchange field and excellent thermal stability. Spin valve readers showed high amplitude, large dynamic range and excellent magnetic stability which indicated their extendibility for ultrahigh density read head applications.

Abstract Background Large-dose melatonin treatment in animal experiments was hardly translated into humans, which may explain the dilemma that the protective effects against myocardial injury in animal have been challenged by clinical trials. Ultrasound-targeted microbubble destruction (UTMD) has been considered a promising drug and gene delivery system to the target tissue. We aim to investigate whether cardiac gene delivery of melatonin receptor mediated by UTMD technology optimizes the efficacy of clinically equivalent dose of melatonin in sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy. Methods Melatonin and cardiac melatonin receptors in patients and rat models with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)- or cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced sepsis were assessed. Rats received UTMD-mediated cardiac delivery of RORα/cationic microbubbles (CMBs) at 1, 3 and 5 days before CLP surgery. Echocardiography, histopathology and oxylipin metabolomics were assessed at 16–20 h after inducing fatal sepsis. Results We observed that patients with sepsis have lower serum melatonin than healthy controls, which was observed in the blood and hearts of Sprague–Dawley rat models with LPS- or CLP-induced sepsis. Notably, a mild dose (2.5 mg/kg) of intravenous melatonin did not substantially improve septic cardiomyopathy. We found decreased nuclear receptors RORα, not melatonin receptors MT1/2, under lethal sepsis that may weaken the potential benefits of a mild dose of melatonin treatment. In vivo, repeated UTMD-mediated cardiac delivery of RORα/CMBs exhibited favorable biosafety, efficiency and specificity, significantly strengthening the effects of a safe dose of melatonin on heart dysfunction and myocardial injury in septic rats. The cardiac delivery of RORα by UTMD technology and melatonin treatment improved mitochondrial dysfunction and oxylipin profiles, although there was no significant influence on systemic inflammation. Conclusions These findings provide new insights to explain the suboptimal effect of melatonin use in clinic and potential solutions to overcome the challenges. UTMD technology may be a promisingly interdisciplinary pattern against sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy.

Multilayered samples of Au/NiFe were sputtered using dc magnetron sputtering, for room temperature giant magnetoresistance (GMR) studies. Two characteristic GMR peaks were observed at 15 and 28 [Angstrom] of Au spacer thickness, with values of 7.4% and 5.4%, respectively. The large magnetoresistive effect at low applied field has been attributed to the weak antiferromagnetic coupling of the magnetic layers as indicated by their calculated exchange constant values. The effect of a buffer layer on the GMR hysteresis, along with its field sensitivity were investigated for both Cr and Ta precursor layers. The Ta underlayer showed a significantly reduced GMR hysteresis. Also reported are GMR values as a function of applied magnetic field during multilayer deposition, and substrate/buffer layer effects. The multilayer structures were high quality and textured along the direction.

We have fabricated a novel giant magnetoresistive (GMR) multilayer (ML) flux sensor that is designed to operate in the current perpendicular to the plane (CPP) mode. The CPP-GMR sensor is a 0.4 [[micro]meter] diameter, 0.09 [[micro]meter] tall Co-Cu ML pedestal. The sensors are patterned using electron beam lithography.
