Abstract

A process has been developed at laboratory scale for the removal of arsenic from a sludge from a nonferrous metal factory in which waste water is treated with lime/ferrous salt and whose arsenic content in dry sludge is 5.84%. Alkaline liquor with sulphide ions is used to treat the dried sludge and the mixture separated by centrifuge with the residue dried and compressed. The arsenic content in the residue is 1.4 mg/l, thus complying with relevant Chinese standards for burial. Abstract

Based on experimental investigations, a two-stage route is proposed for treatment of acid wastewater with high (860 mg/l) arsenic content from a nonferrous metal smelter. The first stage is flocculation with the flocculant PNS and the addition of phosphate as an oxidising agent in which As3+ is oxidised to As5+ and arsenic and heavy metals are removed. The second stage is removal of sulphate and fluoride ion by neutralisation with a mixed alkaline solution to form insoluble fluoride and gypsum. Process variables were optimised using results of laboratory tests. Abstract

Before the start of the schistosomiasis transmission season, 129 villagers resident on a Schistosoma japonicum-endemic island in Poyang Lake, Jiangxi Province, 64 of whom were stool-positive for S. japonicum eggs by the Kato method and 65 negative, were treated with praziquantel. Forty-five days later the 93 subjects who presented for follow-up were all stool-negative. Blood samples were collected from all 93 individuals. S. japonicum soluble worm antigen (SWAP) and soluble egg antigen (SEA) stimulated IL-4, IL-5 and IFN-γ production in whole-blood cultures were measured by ELISA. All the subjects were interviewed nine times during the subsequent transmission season to estimate the intensity of their contact with potentially infective snail habitats, and the subjects were all re-screened for S. japonicum by the Kato method at the end of the transmission season. Fourteen subjects were found to be infected at that time. There was some indication that the risk of infection might be associated with gender (with females being at higher risk) and with the intensity of water contact, and there was evidence that levels of SEA-induced IFN-γ production were associated with reduced risk of infection. Abstract

The blood–brain barrier (BBB) excludes the vast majority of cancer therapeutics from normal brain. However, the importance of the BBB in limiting drug delivery and efficacy is controversial in high-grade brain tumors, such as glioblastoma (GBM). The accumulation of normally brain impenetrant radiographic contrast material in essentially all GBM has popularized a belief that the BBB is uniformly disrupted in all GBM patients so that consideration of drug distribution across the BBB is not relevant in designing therapies for GBM. However, contrary to this view, overwhelming clinical evidence demonstrates that there is also a clinically significant tumor burden with an intact BBB in all GBM, and there is little doubt that drugs with poor BBB permeability do not provide therapeutically effective drug exposures to this fraction of tumor cells. This review provides an overview of the clinical literature to support a central hypothesis: that all GBM patients have tumor regions with an intact BBB, and cure for GBM will only be possible if these regions of tumor are adequately treated.
