Introduction: Comorbidities, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), are common in patients with rhinosinusitis (RS). However, the link between RS and GERD has not been fully understood. This study aimed to investigate the causal relationship between GERD and acute (ARS) or chronic RS (CRS), providing references for the pathogenesis and management of RS. Methods: The data were obtained from the Integrative Epidemiology Unit Open GWAS project and FinnGen. A total of 972,838 individuals were included. The inverse variance-weighted (IVW) method was applied to obtain the primary results of the study. Weighted median, MR-Egger, and mode-based methods were used to determine the robustness of the results. Cochran's Q statistic and MR-Egger method were applied to detect heterogeneity and pleiotrophy in instrumental variables (IVs). Other sensitivity analyses included MR-PRESSO and leave-one-out analysis. Results: The MR study showed that GERD was associated with an increased risk of CRS (OR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.18–1.57, p < 0.001). The results of other analysis methods were broadly consistent with the IVW estimate. No heterogeneity was detected by Cochran's Q test (p = 0.061) and MR-PRESSO (p = 0.074). No horizontal pleiotropy was shown in IVs (p = 0.700). GERD was also associated with an increased risk of ARS (OR: 1.31, 95% CI: 1.17–1.48, p < 0.001). Some analytical results were inconsistent with the IVW estimate. No heterogeneity and pleiotropy were observed. There was no sufficient evidence for a reverse causal effect of RS on GERD. Conclusion: Our study supported that GERD promoted the risk of CRS and may be a potential risk factor for ARS. Abstract: Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) to carbon monoxide (CO) has attracted increasing attention, because this method provides a new route for CO2 recycling utilization. As CO2 is chemically inert, this reaction requires a high over‐potential. Therefore, it is highly desirable to develop an electrocatalyst to accelerate this reaction. In the present work, we have investigated numerous imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) with the aim of looking for a low‐cost homogeneous catalyst with high efficiency. By comparison, 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim][Cl]) has been selected as the most cost‐effective. To further reduce the cost of [Bmim][Cl], we added [Bmim][Cl] into propylene carbonate(PC)/tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (Bu4NClO4), and used it as the electrocatalyst. Our experimental results show that [Bmim][Cl] has a high catalytic effect for CO2 reduction. The catalytic mechanism of [Bmim][Cl] has been discussed based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It is explained as follows: CO2 was first reduced to the high‐energy CO2.− radical through a one‐electron transfer. The generated CO2.− radical further reacts with [Bmim]+, resulting in the formation of a complex [CO2−Bmim]. Thus, the activation energy of CO2 reduction has been reduced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heart failure (HF) is a condition caused by a malfunction of the heart's pumping function. The single-point insulin sensitivity estimator (SPISE) index is a novel indicator for assessing insulin resistance in humans. However, the connection between the SPISE index and the risk of HF in the elderly is unknown. Therefore, our study aims to evaluate the connection between the SPISE index and HF in older adults. The study was based on data collected from the 1999–2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database and included 6165 participants aged ≥60 years. The multivariable linear regression model and the smooth fitting curve model were applied to investigate the connection between the SPISE index and HF in the elderly. Furthermore, the subgroup analysis was performed to investigate the interactive factors. In this study, the mean age of the population was 69.38 years. After adjusting for all covariates, we observed that the SPISE index was inversely related to the prevalence of HF (OR = 0.87, 95 % CI = 0.80–0.94, P < 0.001) in older adults. The interaction analysis showed that the association might be affected by diabetes mellitus and smoking status. Additionally, an inflection point between the SPISE index and HF was found among older women. An inverse correlation was detected between the SPISE index and HF in the elderly. This could provide new insight into the prevention and management of HF in the elderly population. • Limited articles have assessed the SPISE index and heart failure in the elderly. • A higher SPISE index was significantly associated with a lower prevalence of heart failure in the elderly. • The relationship presented an inflection point that was found among female individuals, but not in the male population. Background : carbohydrate-restricted diets (CRDs) have gained attention to address metabolic dysregulation commonly observed in dyslipidemia, a condition posing significant risks to cardiovascular health. However, the effectiveness of CRDs in improving cardiovascular health remains contentious. This meta-analysis comprehensively evaluated the long-term effects of CRDs on glucolipid metabolism and weight loss in individuals with dyslipidemia. Methods : extensive searches were conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, the Cochrane Library, and EMBASE. Randomized controlled trials examining the effects of CRDs on glucolipid metabolism and weight loss in adults with dyslipidemia over a minimum of three weeks were included. This analysis compared the differential effects between moderate-low carbohydrate diets (MLCDs) and low carbohydrate diets (LCDs), including a targeted evaluation of animal-based CRDs and dyslipidemic individuals based on the BMI status, thereby addressing gaps in current knowledge. Results : Our findings indicated that CRDs significantly enhanced lipid profiles, including total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and apolipoprotein B (ApoB), and contributed to weight management in individuals with dyslipidemia. MLCDs were more effective than LCDs in improving all lipid profiles except for TG, which was more effectively managed by LCDs. Animal-based CRDs did not significantly impact lipid profiles. Dyslipidemic individuals with overweight and obesity showed significant changes in TG and ApoB. A noteworthy negative correlation was also observed between TC, TG, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels with higher dietary fiber intake, supporting the beneficial impact of fiber on cardiovascular health. Conclusions : These results for the first time highlighted the potential of adopting MLCDs, particularly those with sufficient fiber content, as a powerful strategy for reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases in patients suffering from dyslipidemia.

Two new species of Zaitzevia Champion, 1923, Zaitzevia acuta sp. nov. and Zaitzevia nanlingensis sp. nov. are described from Guangdong Province, China and photographs of habitus and male aedeagus are provided. This genus is recorded from Guangdong Province for the first time.

Aim: To assess the efficacy and safety of diverting colostomy in treating severe hemorrhagic chronic radiation proctitis (CRP)., Methods: Patients with severe hemorrhagic CRP who were admitted from 2008 to 2014 were enrolled into this study. All CRP patients were diagnosed by a combination of pelvic radiation history, clinical rectal bleeding, and endoscopic findings. Inclusion criteria were CRP patients with refractory bleeding with moderate to severe anemia with a hemoglobin level < 90 g/L. The study group included patients who were treated by diverting colostomy, while the control group included patients who received conservative treatment. The remission of bleeding was defined as complete cessation or only occasional bleeding that needed no further treatment. The primary outcome was bleeding remission at 6 mo after treatment. Quality of life before treatment and at follow-up was evaluated according to EORTC QLQ C30. Severe CRP complications were recorded during follow-up., Results: Forty-seven consecutive patients were enrolled, including 22 in the colostomy group and 27 in the conservative treatment group. When compared to conservative treatment, colostomy obtained a higher rate of bleeding remission (94% vs 12%), especially in control of transfusion-dependent bleeding (100% vs 0%), and offered a better control of refractory perianal pain (100% vs 0%), and a lower score of bleeding (P < 0.001) at 6 mo after treatment. At 1 year after treatment, colostomy achieved better remission of both moderate bleeding (100% vs 21.5%, P = 0.002) and severe bleeding (100% vs 0%, P < 0.001), obtained a lower score of bleeding (0.8 vs 2.0, P < 0.001), and achieved obvious elevated hemoglobin levels (P = 0.003), when compared to the conservative treatment group. The quality of life dramatically improved after colostomy, which included global health, function, and symptoms, but it was not improved in the control group. Pathological evaluation after colostomy found diffused chronic inflammation cells, and massive fibrosis collagen depositions under the rectal wall, which revealed potential fibrosis formation., Conclusion: Diverting colostomy is a simple, effective and safe procedure for severe hemorrhagic CRP. Colostomy can improve quality of life and reduce serious complications secondary to radiotherapy.
