Abstract

In order to study the influence of typical coal-fired flue gas components on the supersaturation characteristics in a multisection growth tube, a two-dimensional heat and mass transfer model was used to predict the supersaturation profiles formed by the cool saturated flow into a warm-walled growth tube (Method 1) and the warm saturated flow into a cold-walled growth tube (Method 2). The calculated results show that the increase in the concentration of the three typical components CO2, SO2, and RH (relative humidity) of the flue gas is beneficial for the achievement of the supersaturated environment in Method 1. Additionally, having too many sections of the growth tube has a disadvantage in achieving the supersaturation profiles. When the content of the gas of lower Le is higher, having more sections of the growth tube is beneficial to achieving a supersaturated environment, while a lower number of sections is necessary when the gas content is lower in Method 2. In a word, the appropriate number of sections in a growth tube is significantly important for the achievement of a favorable supersaturated environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The variation of PM2.5 concentration in the atmosphere is closely related to the variation in weather patterns. The change in weather pattern is accompanied by the corresponding change in atmospheric circulation characteristics. It is necessary to explore the relationship between PM2.5 concentration changes and atmospheric circulation characteristics during pollution periods. In this paper, Lamb-Jenkinson objective classification method is applied to classify daily atmospheric circulation. The pollution periods are calculated and the atmospheric circulation variation rule is obtained. Combined with the physical parameter field (humidity, potential temperature, and potential height), a typical pollution period is analyzed. Additionally, the influence of atmospheric circulation type variation on PM2.5 concentration and transport channel during the pollution period was obtained. The results show that atmospheric circulation types in the study period are dominated by A-type (anticyclonic), N-type (north), and NE-type (northeast), indicating obvious seasonal differences, and the proportion of C-type (cyclonic) circulation was increased significantly in summer. During the pollution period analysis from 2 to 4 January 2019, atmospheric circulation type changed from N-type to NE-type (northeast), the wind direction changed from southeast wind, and the change of pressure gradient was consistent with the trend of the wind field. Moreover, the physical parameter field assisted in verifying the process of the pollution period from the conducive to the accumulation of PM2.5 to conducive to the deposition of pollutants and external transport. The research results would provide theoretical support for PM2.5 prediction during the pollution period and also supply a theoretical and technical basis for the establishment of ecological compensation standards for air pollution and atmospheric environmental control. Abstract

Aerosol retrieval over land from satellite remotely sensed data remains internationally a difficult task. By using MODIS data, the Dark Dense Vegetation (DDV) algorithm aerosol distribution and properties retrieval over land has shown excellent competence. However, this algorithm is restricted to lower surface reflectance such as water bodies and dense vegetation, which limits its actual application, and is unable to be used for high reflective surface such as over urban areas. In this paper, we introduce a new aerosol retrieval model by exploiting the Synergy of TERRA and AQUA MODIS data (SYNTAM), which can be used for various ground surfaces, including for high reflective surface. Preliminary validations have been carried out by comparing with AERONET measured data, which shows good accuracy and promising potential. Further research work is undergoing.

Abstract

To derive the actual land surface information quantitatively, the atmospheric effects should be correctly removed. Atmospheric effects dependent on aerosol particles, clouds and other atmosphere conditions. Aerosol parameters can be retrieved from the remotely sensed data. The retrieved aerosol characters can also be applied to environmental monitoring. To retrieval the aerosol optical thickness over land, many methods have been developed. The most popular one is the dark dense vegetation method. But it is confined to vegetation fields. The SYNTAM method can be used to retrieval aerosol optical thickness over land from MODIS data, no matter whether the land is dark or bright. In this paper, the SYNTAM method is applied to MODIS data for the retrieval of aerosol optical thickness over China. The retrieval process is complicated. And the EMS memory required is too large for a personal computing to run successfully. To solve this problem, the Grid environment is used. Our experiments were performed on the High-Throughput Spatial Information Processing Prototype System based on Grid platform in Institute of Remote Sensing Applications, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The aerosol optical thickness retrieval process is described in this paper. And the detail data query, data pre-processing, job monitoring and post-processing is discussed. In this article we describe a remote sensing application workflow in building a Remote Sensing Information Analysis and Service Grid Node at Institute of Remote Sensing Applications based on the Condor platform. The goal of the Node is to make good use of physically distributed resources in the field of remote sensing science such as data, models and algorithms, and computing resource left unused on Internet. Implementing it we use workflow technology to manage the node, control resources, and make traditional algorithms as a Grid service. We use web service technology to communicate with Spatial Information Grid (SIG) and other Grid systems. We use JSP technology to provide an independent portal. Abstract

To use traditional algorithms and software packages on Grid system, traditional algorithms and software packages, in general, have to be modified. In this paper we focus on standards and methodologies for Grid platform within the context of the Remote Sensing Data Processing Grid Node (RSDPGN) that implements a loose-coupling parallel structure for orchestrating traditional remote sensing algorithms and software packages on the Condor platform. We have implemented 17 remote sensing applications in one system using Web service and workflow technology without any change to traditional codes. Some core algorithm codes are come from a remote sensing software package which we has neither resource codes nor APIs. Others come from the program codes accumulated by our group. The design and prototype implementation of RSDPGN are presented. The advantage and shortage of loose-coupling structure is analysed. Through a case study of land surface temperature calcu-lation from MODIS data, we demonstrate the way to modify software packages in details. Moreover we discuss the problems and solutions based on our experience such as system architecture, the kinds of functional modules, fast data transfer, and state monitoring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Sharing spatial data derived from remote sensing is a very significant thing. Grid computing and Web Service technology provides fundamental support for it. In this paper we mainly discuss architecture and middleware of sharing spatial data derived from remote sensing and processing. Because middleware of automatically transferring and task execution on grid is the key of the architecture, we study the middleware. It can effectively protect the owner of data and middleware's property through giving users their required result not just simply copying data and codes resource to them. Abstract

For many remote sensing application projects, the quality of the research or the product is heavily dependent upon the quantity of computing cycles available. Middleware is software that connects two or more otherwise separate applications across the Internet or local area networks. In this paper, we present the High Throughput Computing Spatial Information Processing (HIT-SIP) System (Prototype), which is developed in Institute of Remote Sensing Applications, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. Several middleware packages developed in the HIT-SIP system are demonstrated. Abstract

Remote sensing applications often concern very large volumes of spatio-temporal data, the emerging Grid computing technologies bring an effective solution to this problem. The Open Grid Services Architecture (OGSA) treats Grid as the aggregate of Grid service, which is extension of Web Service. It defines standard mechanisms for creating, naming, and discovering transient Grid service instances; provides location transparency and multiple protocol bindings for service instances; and supports integration with underlying native platform facilities. It is not effective used in data-intensive computing such as remote sensing applications because its foundation, Web Service, is not efficient in scientific computing. How to increase the efficiency of the grid services for a scientific computing? This paper proposes a mechanism Grid service spread (GSS), which dynamically replant a Grid service from a Grid node to the others. We have more computers to provide the same function, so less time can be spent completing a problem than original Grid system. This paper also provides the solution how to adept the service duplicate for the destination node's Grid environment; how each service duplicate communicates with each other; how to manage the lifecycle of services spread etc. The efficiency of this solution through a remote sensing application of NDVI computing is demonstrated. Abstract

An a lgorithm for the retrieval of the aerosol optical d epth over l and (ADL) using radiances at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) measured by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) is proposed. AVHRR is the only satellite sensor providing nearly continuous global coverage since June 1979, which could generate the longest aerosol climate data records currently available from operational satellites. In the implementation of the ADL algorithm, an analytical model is used which couples an atmospheric radiative transfer model and a land surface reflectance parameterization. The radiation field can be separated into three parts: direct radiance, single-scattered radiance, and multiple-scattered. Each of these parts is individually parameterized. To obtain the surface reflectance in an automatic retrieval procedure over land for AVHRR, the aerosol scattering effect at 3.75 μm was assumed to be negligible and relationships between the surface reflectances at 0.64 μm and 3.75 μm were evaluated for different surface types and the authors propose to use these to obtain the surface reflectance at the shorter wavelength. The 0.64 μm surface reflectance was then used in a radiative transfer model to compute AOD at that wavelength using six different aerosol types, where optimal estimation (OE) theory is applied to minimize the difference between modeled and measured radiances. The ADL algorithm is applied to re-calibrated Level 1B radiances from the AVHRRs on-board the TIROS-N and the Metop-B satellites to retrieve the AOD over North China and Central Europe. The results show that the AOD retrieved from these two instruments are in agreement with co-located AOD values from ground-based reference networks. Over North China, using AERONET sites, 58% of the ADL AOD values are within an expected error (EE) range of ±(0.05 + 20%) and 53% are within the EE range of ±(0.05 + 15%). For GAW-PFR (World Meteorological Organization, WMO, Global Atmosphere Watch, GAW) sites, part of the European ACTRIS (Aerosols, Clouds, and Trace gases Research InfraStructure) sites, 79% of the ADL AOD values are within the EE range of ±(0.05 + 20%) and 75% are within the EE range of ±(0.05 + 15%). Not surprisingly, the agreement is better over Europe with generally lower AOD values. An additional cross comparison of the AOD results with MODIS (MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) DeepBlue aerosol products shows that the spatial distributions of the two AOD datasets are similar, but with generally lower values for ADL and lower coverage. The temporal variation of the annual mean AOD over selected AERONET sites shows that ADL values are generally between 0.2 and 0.5 over North-Eastern China and trace the MODIS and AERONET data for the overlapping years quite well.
