The southeast edge of the Loess Plateau (SELP) is a crucial area for studying subsistence strategies and social complexity in prehistoric China. Currently, no systematic isotopic study has been conducted to reveal shifts in subsistence strategies and their link to the trajectory of social complexity. This paper compiles previously published isotopic data from human and fauna bones at 24 sites dating from 8000 to 5000 BP, aiming to uncover diachronic changes in subsistence strategies and their relationship with social complexity. The results indicate a gradual increase in millet consumption by humans and an increasing utilization of millet‐based byproducts as feed for domestic animals (pigs and dogs) over time. The isotopic data of humans and animals demonstrate the establishment of millet agriculture during the Early Yangshao period (7000–6000 BP). Millet agriculture creates a crucial material foundation for population growth and cultural prosperity. Two modes of millet cultivation, intensive and extensive, are proposed to explain the continuous development of millet agriculture since the Early Yangshao period. Finally, significant dietary heterogeneity among the human population during the Late Yangshao period strongly suggests the emergence of social differentiation and complexity, supported by other archaeological evidence such as settlement hierarchies and the presence of exquisite objects in burials. Renewed excavations at Shimao, the largest stone walled urban site in northern China dating to around 4200–3700 BP, have focused on Shimao's unusual architecture and material culture, but there remains much to be known about the subsistence system and agricultural strategies the inhabitants employed around this site. In this paper we provide new archaeobotanical and isotopic evidence for the agricultural systems and strategies that supported Shimao and nearby sites, from 5000 to 3000 BP. Our data show that the system gradually shifted from one based on common millet as the main staple—requiring a high level of labour-input—to a system dependent on extensive cultivation of foxtail millet, which is better suited to dryland cultivation in colder environments. We argue that this shift in cultivation coincided with regional climate change, and helped sustain early Bronze Age state societies, which fuelled the rapid emergence of social complexity in the semi-arid and arid area of the northern Loess Plateau from 4200 to 3000 BP. BACKGROUND: The pectin from Ficus carica Linn. (fig) peels is a valuable and recyclable constituent that may bring huge economic benefits. To maximize the utilization of this resource, deep eutectic solvent (DES)‐assisted extraction was applied to extract pectin from fig peels, and the extraction process was optimized with response surface methodology. RESULTS: When DES (choline chloride/oxalic acid = 1:1) content was 168.1 g kg−1, extraction temperature was 79.8 °C, liquid–solid ratio was 23.3 mL g−1, and extraction time was 120 min, the maximum yield of 239.6 g kg−1 was obtained, which was almost twice the extraction of hot water. DES‐extracted fig peel pectin (D‐FP) exhibited better nature than hot water‐extracted fig peel pectin (W‐FP) in terms of uronic acid content, particle size distribution, and solubility, but lower molecular weight and esterification degree. D‐FP and W‐FP had similar infrared spectra and thermodynamic peaks but differed in monosaccharide compositions. D‐FP also showed good antioxidant capacities and exhibited better functional activities than W‐FP. CONCLUSION: These results indicated that D‐FP was of promising quality being utilized in food or medical industries and the optimal DES‐assisted extraction method might be applied as a sustainable process for the effective extraction of bioactive pectin from fig peels with the excellence of low equipment requirements and simple operation. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. Chinese history is composed of the contest, war, and admixture between the nomads in the north plateau and the farmers in central China. During the Eastern Zhou Period (770–221 BCE), nomadic groups, such as Rong (戎) and Di (狄), occupied the Eurasian Steppes and had frequent contact with the farmer group in Central China according historic records. This created a geographic boundary between the two groups named the agro-pastoral interweaving belt. To explore the impact of ethnic integration and human–animal interaction during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis of humans and animals at the Chongpingyuan site, Shaanxi, was undertaken. The δ13C (mean: -7.9 ± 0.5‰, n = 17) and δ15N values (mean: 8.8 ± 0.6‰, n = 17) for human and pigs (mean δ13C: −8.1 ± 0.5‰; mean δ15N:7.5 ± 0.5‰, n = 2) revealed that they consumed C4-based foods mainly while the δ13C and δ15N values of cattle (−17.6‰, 4.3‰, n = 1), horse (−17.1‰, 4.1‰, n = 1), and sheep (mean: −17.4 ± 1.5‰, 6.0 ± 0.8‰, n = 7) suggest that they relied on C3 plants supplemented with minor C4 plants. Based on the archaeological and historic contexts, we infer that humans at Chongpingyuan survived on an agro-pastoral economy with millet agriculture as the economic foundation. Given the isotopic spacing between humans and animals, we found that pigs contributed to the main sources of animal protein, whereas other animals might have been provisioned for other purposes, such as rituals or properties. In general, no significantly dietary differences between genders and funeral customs are found, but people with abundant burial objects seem to have consumed more animal protein, possibly related to social heterogeneity.

Human influence on ecological niches can drive rapid changes in the diet, behaviour and evolutionary trajectories of small mammals. Archaeological evidence from the Late Neolithic Loess Plateau of northern China suggests that the expansion of millet cultivation created new selective pressures, attracting small mammals to fields and settlements. Here, the authors present direct evidence for commensal behaviour in desert hares (Lepus capensis), dating to c. 4900 years ago. Donkeys facilitated trade and transport in much of the ancient world, but were seldom used in elite or leisure activities. While Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907) texts indicate that noble women played polo riding donkeys, this has never been documented archaeologically. Here, the authors present the first archaeological evidence of the significance of donkeys for elite Tang women through analyses of donkey remains recovered from the tomb of a Tang noblewoman in Xi'an, China. Understanding the crop management practices of millet agriculture is pivotal for comprehending the development of Chinese civilization. Recent studies have indicated that organic manuring plays a crucial role in ensuring sustainable millet cultivation on the Loess Plateau. However, uncertainties still exist regarding how manuring practices impact the δ15N values of C4 millets compared to C3 cereals. Furthermore, inadequate information on crop δ15N at archaeological sites has led to controversial interpretations of animal and human diets. In this study, we present new findings from an experimental archaeological research conducted in actual loess farmland in China to explore the potential range of variability in grain δ15N values of millets. Our results demonstrate that animal manure significantly increases Setaria and Panicum grain δ15N values, ranging from 2.7 to 9.3‰. Considering trophic enrichment effects on nitrogen isotopes, humans consuming manured millets may yield values ranging from 5.7 to 12.3‰, suggesting alternative explanations for high δ15N values other than animal protein consumption. Opposite to the general hypothesis, the grain δ15N values are systematically lower than those of leaves. The difference between the values of Setaria and Panicum and the process of manure influencing the grain δ15N values are also discussed. Our study provides novel insights into the nitrogen stable isotopic indicator of millet manuring and will serve to set reconstructions of past manuring and diet practices in northern China on a firmer foundation.
