CSS J102913+404220 is a peculiar narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy with an energetic nuclear optical outburst. We present a detailed analysis of its multi-wavelength photometric and spectroscopic observations covering a period of decade since outburst. We detect mid-infrared (MIR) flares delayed by about two months relative to the optical outburst, with an extremely high peak luminosity of log(L_4.6um)>44 erg/s. The MIR peak luminosity is at least an order of magnitude higher than any known supernovae explosions, suggesting the optical outburst might be due to a stellar tidal disruption event (TDE). We find late-time X-ray brightening by a factor of >30 with respect to what is observed about 100 days after the optical outburst peak, followed by a flux fading by a factor of ~4 within two weeks, making it one of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) with extreme variability. Despite the dramatic X-ray variability, there are no coincident strong flux variations in optical, UV and MIR bands. This unusual variability behavior has been seen in other highly accreting AGNs and could be attributed to absorption variability. In this scenario, the decrease in the covering factor of absorber with accretion rate could cause the X-ray brightening, possibly induced by the TDE. Most strikingly, while the UV/optical continuum remains little changes with time, an evident enhancement in the flux of H_alpha broad emission line is observed, about a decade after the nuclear optical outburst, which is an anomalous behavior never seen in any other AGNs. Such an H_alpha anomaly could be explained by the replenishment of gas clouds and excitation within Broad Line Region (BLR) that originates, perhaps from the interaction of outflowing stellar debris with BLR. We analyze the spatial dynamics of polarized atom vapor and present a mathematical method to eliminate the diffusion effect partially. It is found that the diffusion effect of polarized atoms can be regarded as a low pass filter in spatial frequency domain and fits well with a Butterworth filter. The fitted spatial filter can be used to restore the original magnetic image before being blurred by the diffusion, thus improving the magnetic spatial resolution. The results of spatial dynamics simulation and magnetic image restoration show the potential usage of this method in magnetic gradiometer and atomic magnetic microscopy.

The early-time interface instabilities in high intensity (high Weber number and high Reynolds number) aero-breakup of a liquid drop are investigated by numerical simulations. A combined analysis based on simulation results and linear-instability theory show that both RT (Rayleigh-Taylor) and KH (Kelvin-Helmholtz) instabilities contributes the dominant disturbances originate from about the half way from the stagnation point to the equator. This is verified further with a specially modified simulation, which decreases the effect of KH instability while keeps other flow properties unchanged.

We investigate the shock-induced turbulent mixing between a light and heavy gas, where a Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) is initiated by a $\Ma = 1.5$ shock wave. The prescribed initial conditions define a deterministic multimode interface perturbation between the gases, which can be imposed exactly for different simulation codes and resolutions to allow for quantitative comparison. Well-resolved large-eddy simulations are performed using two different and independently developed numerical methods with the objective of assessing turbulence structures, prediction uncertainties and convergence behaviour. The two numerical methods differ fundamentally with respect to the employed subgrid-scale regularisation, each representing state-of-the-art approaches to RMI. Unlike previous studies the focus of the present investigation is to quantify uncertainties introduced by the numerical method, as there is strong evidence that subgrid-scale regularisation and truncation errors may have a significant effect on the linear and non-linear stages of the RMI evolution. Fourier diagnostics reveal that the larger energy containing scales converge rapidly with increasing mesh resolution and thus are in excellent agreement for the two numerical methods. Spectra of gradient dependent quantities, such as enstrophy and scalar dissipation rate, show stronger dependencies on the small-scale flow field structures in consequence of truncation error effects, which for one numerical method are dominantly dissipative and for the other dominantly dispersive., Comment: 34 pages, submitted to Journal of Fluid Mechanics

In this paper, we propose a simple hybrid WENO scheme to increase computational efficiency and decrease numerical dissipation. Based on the characteristic-wise approach, the scheme switches the numerical flux of each characteristic variables between that of WENO scheme and its optimal linear scheme according to a discontinuity detector measuring the non-resolvability of the linear scheme. A number of numerical examples computed with 5th-order WENO scheme suggested that, while achieving very small numerical dissipation and good robustness, the computational effort on WENO flux used in the hybrid scheme is negligible., Comment: 23 pages including 6 figures

In this note, we relate the two well-known difficulties of Godunov schemes: the carbuncle phenomena in simulating high Mach number flow, and the inaccurate pressure profile in simulating low Mach number flow. We introduced two simple low-Mach-number modifications for the classical Roe flux to decrease the difference between the acoustic and advection contributions of the numerical dissipation. While the first modification increases the local numerical dissipation, the second decreases it. The numerical tests on the double-Mach reflection problem show that both modifications eliminate the kinked Mach stem suffered by the original flux. These results suggest that, other than insufficient numerical dissipation near the shock front, the carbuncle phenomena is strongly relevant to the non-comparable acoustic and advection contributions of the numerical dissipation produced by Godunov schemes due to the low Mach number effect., Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure

A coarse-grained particle model for incompressible Navier-Stokes (NS) equation is proposed based on spatial filtering by utilizing smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) approximations. This model is similar to our previous developed SPH discretization of NS equation ({\it Hu X.Y. & N.A. Adams, J. Comput. Physics}, 227: 264-278, 2007 and 228: 2082-2091, 2009) and the Lagrangian averaged NS (LANS-$\alpha$) turbulence model. Other than using smoothing approaches, this model obtains particle transport velocity by imposing constant $\sigma$ which is associated with the particle density, and is called SPH-$\sigma$ model. Numerical tests on two-dimensional decay and forced turbulences with high Reynolds number suggest that the model is able to reproduce both the inverse energy cascade and direct enstrophy cascade of the kinetic energy spectrum, the time scaling of enstrophy decay and the non-Guassian probability density function (PDF) of particle acceleration., Comment: 23 pages. 7 figures

A general dispersion-dissipation condition for finite difference schemes is derived by analyzing the numerical dispersion and dissipation of explicit finite-difference schemes. The proper dissipation required to damp spurious high-wavenumber waves in the solution is determined from a physically motivated relation between group velocity and dissipation rate. The application to a previously developed low-dissipation weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme (WENO-CU6-M2) [X. Y. Hu and N. A. Adams; Scale separation for implicit large eddy simulation, J. Comput. Phys. 230 (2011) 7240-7249] demonstrates that this condition can serve as general guideline for optimizing the dispersion and dissipation of linear and non-linear finite-difference schemes. Moreover, the improved WENO-CU6-M2 which satisfies the dispersion-dissipation condition can be used for under-resolved simulations. We demonstrate this capability by considering transition to turbulence and self-similar energy decay of the three-dimensional Taylor-Green vortex. Simulations of the inviscid and the viscous Taylor-Green vortex at Reynolds numbers ranging from $Re=400$ to $Re=3000$ show a significant improvement over the classical dynamic Smagorinsky model and demonstrate competitiveness with state-of-the-art implicit LES models, while preserving shock-capturing properties., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

In this work a simple method to enforce the positivity-preserving property for general high-order conservative schemes is proposed. The method keeps the original scheme unchanged and detects critical numerical fluxes which may lead to negative density and pressure, and then imposes a cut-off flux limiter to satisfy a sufficient condition for preserving positivity. Though an extra time-step size condition is required to maintain the formal order of accuracy, it is less restrictive than those in previous works. A number of numerical examples suggest that this method, when applied on an essentially non-oscillatory base scheme, can be used to prevent positivity failure when the flow involves vacuum or near vacuum and very strong discontinuities., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures

We have developed a multi-phase SPH method to simulate arbitrary interfaces containing surface active agents (surfactants) that locally change the properties of the interface, such the surface tension coefficient. Our method incorporates the effects of surface diffusion, transport of surfactant from/to the bulk phase to/from the interface and diffusion in the bulk phase. Neglecting transport mechanisms, we use this method to study the impact of insoluble surfactants on drop deformation and breakup in simple shear flow and present the results in a fluid dynamics video., Comment: Two videos are included for the Gallery of Fluid Motion of the APS DFD Meeting 2010

A difficulty in the classical hydrodynamic analysis of moving contact-line problems, associated with the no-slip wall boundary condition resulting in an unbalanced divergence of the viscous stresses, is reexamined with a smoothed, finite-width interface model. The analysis in the sharp-interface limit shows that the singularity of the viscous stress can be balanced by another singularity of the unbalanced surface stress. The dynamic contact angle is determined by surface tension, viscosity, contact-line velocity and a single non-dimensional parameter reflecting the length-scale ratio between interface width and the thickness of the first molecule layer at the wall surface. The widely used Navier boundary condition and Cox's hypothesis are also derived following the same procedure by permitting finite-wall slip.
