We use determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC), in combination with the principal component analysis (PCA) approach to unsupervised learning, to extract information about phase transitions in several of the most fundamental Hamiltonians describing strongly correlated materials. We first explore the zero temperature antiferromagnet to singlet transition in the Periodic Anderson Model, the Mott insulating transition in the Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, and the magnetic transition in the 1/6-filled Lieb lattice. We then discuss the prospects for learning finite temperature superconducting transitions in the attractive Hubbard model, for which there is no sign problem. Finally, we investigate finite temperature charge density wave (CDW) transitions in the Holstein model, where the electrons are coupled to phonon degrees of freedom, and carry out a finite size scaling analysis to determine $T_c$. We examine the different behaviors associated with Hubbard-Stratonovich auxiliary field configurations on both the entire space-time lattice and on a single imaginary time slice, or other quantities, such as equal-time Green's and pair-pair correlation functions., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Content popularity prediction has been extensively studied due to its importance and interest for both users and hosts of social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest. However, existing work mainly focuses on modeling popularity using a single metric such as the total number of likes or shares. In this work, we propose Diffusion-LSTM, a memory-based deep recurrent network that learns to recursively predict the entire diffusion path of an image through a social network. By combining user social features and image features, and encoding the diffusion path taken thus far with an explicit memory cell, our model predicts the diffusion path of an image more accurately compared to alternate baselines that either encode only image or social features, or lack memory. By mapping individual users to user prototypes, our model can generalize to new users not seen during training. Finally, we demonstrate our model's capability of generating diffusion trees, and show that the generated trees closely resemble ground-truth trees., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We apply unsupervised machine learning techniques, mainly principal component analysis (PCA), to compare and contrast the phase behavior and phase transitions in several classical spin models - the square and triangular-lattice Ising models, the Blume-Capel model, a highly degenerate biquadratic-exchange spin-one Ising (BSI) model, and the 2D XY model, and examine critically what machine learning is teaching us. We find that quantified principal components from PCA not only allow exploration of different phases and symmetry-breaking, but can distinguish phase transition types and locate critical points. We show that the corresponding weight vectors have a clear physical interpretation, which is particularly interesting in the frustrated models such as the triangular antiferromagnet, where they can point to incipient orders. Unlike the other well-studied models, the properties of the BSI model are less well known. Using both PCA and conventional Monte Carlo analysis, we demonstrate that the BSI model shows an absence of phase transition and macroscopic ground-state degeneracy. The failure to capture the `charge' correlations (vorticity) in the BSI model (XY model) from raw spin configurations points to some of the limitations of PCA. Finally, we employ a nonlinear unsupervised machine learning procedure, the `antoencoder method', and demonstrate that it too can be trained to capture phase transitions and critical points., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures

The competition between antiferromagnetic (AF) order and singlet formation is a central phenomenon of the Kondo and Periodic Anderson Hamiltonians, and of the heavy fermion materials they describe. In this paper, we explore the effects of an additional conduction band on magnetism in these models, and, specifically, on changes in the AF-singlet quantum critical point (QCP) and the one particle and spin spectral functions. To understand the magnetic phase transition qualitatively, we first carry out a self-consistent mean field theory (MFT). The basic conclusion is that, at half-filling, the coupling to the additional band stabilizes the AF phase to larger $f$ $d$ hybridization $V$ in the PAM. We also explore the possibility of competing ferromagnetic phases when this conduction band is doped away from half-filling. We next employ Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) which, in combination with finite size scaling, allows us to evaluate the position of the QCP using an exact treatment of the interactions. This approach confirms the stabilization of AF order, which occurs through an enhancement of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction. QMC results for the spectral function $A(\textbf{q},\omega)$ and dynamic spin structure factor $\chi(\textbf{q},\omega)$ yield additional insight into the AF-singlet competition and the low temperature phases., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

We consider a lattice model of itinerant electrons coupled to an array of localized classical Heisenberg spins. The nature of the ground state ordered magnetic phases that result from the indirect spin-spin coupling mediated by the electrons is determined as a function of density and the spin-fermion coupling $J$. At a fixed chemical potential, spiral phases exist only up to values of $J$ which are less than roughly half the electronic bandwidth. At a fixed electron density and near half filling, the system phase separates into a half-filled antiferromagnetic phase and a spiral phase. The ferromagnetic phases are shown to be fully polarized, while the spiral phases have equal admixture of up and down spins. Phase separation survives in the presence of weak pairing field $\Delta$ but disappears when $\Delta$ exceeds a critical value $\Delta_c$. If pairing fields are large enough, an additional spiral state arises at strong coupling $J$. The relevance of this study, especially the phase separation, to artificially engineered systems of adjacent itinerant electrons and localized spins is discussed. In particular, we propose a method which might allow for the braiding of Majorana fermions by changing the density and moving their location as they are pulled along by a phase separation boundary., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures
