Abstract

We study double spin asymmetries in Drell-Yan processes in which one initial hadron is transversely polarized and another one is longitudinally polarized. The complete part of the hadronic tensor relevant to asymmetries is derived. This part consists of twist-2 and twist-3 parton distributions and is gauge invariant. 2. Gluon GPDs and Exclusive Photoproduction of a Quarkonium in Forward Region

Abstract

Forward photoproduction of $J/\psi$ can be used to extract Generalized Parton Distributions(GPD's) of gluons. We analyze the process at twist-3 level and study relevant classifications of twist-3 gluon GPD's. At leading power or twist-2 level the produced $J/\psi$ is transversely polarized. We find that at twist-3 the produced $J/\psi$ is longitudinally polarized. Our study shows that in high energy limit the twist-3 amplitude is only suppressed by the inverse power of the heavy quark mass relatively to the twist-2 amplitude. This indicates that the power correction to the cross-section of unpolarized $J/\psi$ can have a sizeable effect. We have also derived the amplitude of the production of $h_c$ at twist-3, but the result contains end-point singularities. Abstract

By using a homemade research device for phase equilibrium, the equilibrium solubility of the alkali nitrates (NaNO3/KNO3/RbNO3/CsNO3) in the mixed solvent glycerol [HOCH2CH(OH)CH2OH] + H2O in the mass fraction range of glycerol (0.0 to 1.0) at 35 and 45 °C was measured. Moreover, the density and refractive index of the saturated solutions of NaNO3/KNO3/RbNO3/CsNO3 + mixed solvent glycerol + H2O were determined. The experimental results showed that, in all systems, with the increase of mass fraction of glycerol, the solubility of the salts and the density of the solution decreased, while the refractive index increased gradually. The solubility, refractive index, and density data were fitted by a four-parameter empirical equation.

Abstract

In this paper we present a novel interactive multimodal learning system, which facilitates search and exploration in large networks of social multimedia users. It allows the analyst to identify and select users of interest, and to find similar users in an interactive learning setting. Our approach is based on novel multimodal representations of users, words and concepts, which we simultaneously learn by deploying a general-purpose neural embedding model. The usefulness of the approach is evaluated using artificial actors, which simulate user behavior in a relevance feedback scenario. Multiple experiments were conducted in order to evaluate the quality of our multimodal representations and compare different embedding strategies. We demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed approach on a multimedia collection originating from the violent online extremism forum Stormfront, which is particularly interesting due to the high semantic level of the discussions it features.

Abstract

Faces in artistic paintings most often contain the same elements (eyes, nose, mouth...) as faces in the real world, however they are not a photo-realistic transfer of physical visual content. These creative nuances the artists introduce in their work act as interference when facial detection models are used in the artistic domain. In this work we introduce models that can accurately detect, classify and conditionally generate artistically painted eyes in portrait paintings. In addition, we introduce the OmniEyes Dataset that captures the essence of painted eyes with annotated patches from 250 K artistic paintings and their metadata. We evaluate our approach in inpainting, out of context eye generation and classification on portrait paintings from the OmniArt dataset. We conduct a user case study to further study the quality of our generated samples, asses their aesthetic aspects and provide quantitative and qualitative results for our model’s performance.

Abstract

When browsing large video collections, human-in-the-loop systems are essential. The system should understand the semantic information need of the user and interactively help formulate queries to satisfy that information need based on data-driven methods. Full synergy between the interacting user and the system can only be obtained when the system learns from the user interactions while providing immediate response. Doing so with dynamically changing information needs for large scale multimodal collections is a challenging task. To push the boundary of current methods, we propose to apply the state of the art in interactive multimodal learning to the complex multimodal information needs posed by the Video Browser Showdown (VBS). To that end we adapt the Exquisitor system, a highly scalable interactive learning system. Exquisitor combines semantic features extracted from visual content and text to suggest relevant media items to the user, based on user relevance feedback on previously suggested items. In this paper, we briefly describe the Exquisitor system, and its first incarnation as a VBS entrant.

Abstract

Aqueous solutions containing salts are of increasing importance in separation and purification processes in chemical engineering. For example, the addition of an organic solvent to the aqueous solution of a salt normally decreases the solubility of the salt, which is called “salting out effect”. Therefore, investigations of the physicochemical properties of inorganic salts in organic solvents + water, such as solubility data together with density, refractive index and so on, are of great scientific importance. For instance, much research has been done on the physicochemical properties of NaCl/KCl + alcohol + H2O systems. Gomis et al. investigated the ternary systems of alcohol (propan-1-ol, propan-2-ol, pentan-2-ol, pentan-3-ol, 2-methylbutan-2-ol, 2-methylbutan-1-ol, and pentan-1-ol) + MCl (M = Na, K) + water at 298.15 K.1–4 Galleguillos et al.5 reported the solubilities, densities, and refractive indices of systems NaCl/KCl + ethanol + H2O at different temperatures. Some researchers focused on the study of systems that include alkali nitrates. For example, reported were the solubility, refractive index, density, electrical conductivity and viscosity of NaNO3 + H2O + poly(ethylene glycol),6 KNO3 + H2O + propan-2-ol,7 and LiNO3 in organic solvent (methanol, ethanol, propan-1-ol, propan-2-ol and butan-1-ol).8

20. Modeling suspended sediment sources and transport in the Ishikari River basin, Japan, using SPARROW

Abstract

It is important to understand the mechanisms that control the fate and transport of suspended sediment (SS) in rivers, because high suspended sediment loads have significant impacts on riverine hydroecology. In this study, the SPARROW (SPAtially Referenced Regression on Watershed Attributes) watershed model was applied to estimate the sources and transport of SS in surface waters of the Ishikari River basin (14 330 km2), the largest watershed in Hokkaido, Japan. The final developed SPARROW model has four source variables (developing lands, forest lands, agricultural lands, and stream channels), three landscape delivery variables (slope, soil permeability, and precipitation), two in-stream loss coefficients, including small streams (streams with drainage area < 200 km2) and large streams, and reservoir attenuation. The model was calibrated using measurements of SS from 31 monitoring sites of mixed spatial data on topography, soils and stream hydrography. Calibration results explain approximately 96% (R2) of the spatial variability in the natural logarithm mean annual SS flux (kg yr-1) and display relatively small prediction errors at the 31 monitoring stations. Results show that developing land is associated with the largest sediment yield at around 1006 kg km-2 yr-1, followed by agricultural land (234 kg km-2 yr-1). Estimation of incremental yields shows that 35% comes from agricultural lands, 23% from forested lands, 23% from developing lands, and 19% from stream channels. The results of this study improve our understanding of sediment production and transportation in the Ishikari River basin in general, which will benefit both the scientific and management communities in safeguarding water resources.

Abstract

Dopamine (DA) is a key hormone in mammalian sodium homeostasis. DA induces natriuresis via acute inhibition of the renal proximal tubule apical membrane Na(+)/H(+) exchanger NHE3. We examined the mechanism by which DA inhibits NHE3 in a renal cell line. DA acutely decreases surface NHE3 antigen in dose- and time-dependent fashion without altering total cellular NHE3. Although DA(1) receptor agonist alone decreases surface NHE3, simultaneous DA(2) agonist synergistically enhances the effect of DA(1). Decreased surface NHE3 antigen, caused by stimulation of NHE3 endocytosis, is dependent on intact functioning of the GTPase dynamin and involves increased binding of NHE3 to the adaptor protein AP2. DA-stimulated NHE3 endocytosis can be blocked by pharmacologic or genetic protein kinase A inhibition or by mutation of two protein kinase A target serines (Ser-560 and Ser-613) on NHE3. We conclude that one mechanism by which DA induces natriuresis is via protein kinase A-mediated phosphorylation of proximal tubule NHE3 leading to endocytosis of NHE3 via clathrin-coated vesicles.

Abstract

Xenotransplantation between discordant species leads to a hyperacute rejection mediated by natural antibodies. both of the IgG and IgM isotypes, activation of complement and endothelial cell activation. The combination of these mechanisms leads to a transplant survival of minutes to a few hours. Polyclonal human irnmunoglobulins for intravenous use ([V]g) from normal donors have proved effective in a number of antibody-mediated disorders, as well as in inflammatory disorders. We demonstrate that administration of [V]g in a guinea pig to rat model of cardiac xenografting can effectively delay hyperacute rejection. 47. HER-2/neu blocks tumor necrosis factor-induced apoptosis via the Akt/NF-kappaB pathway.

Abstract

Overexpression of HER-2/neu correlates with poor survival of breast and ovarian cancer patients and induces resistance to tumor necrosis factor (TNF), which causes cancer cells to escape from host immune defenses. The mechanism of HER-2/neu-induced TNF resistance is unknown. Here we report that HER-2/neu activates Akt and NF-kappaB without extracellular stimulation. Blocking of the Akt pathway by a dominant-negative Akt sensitizes the HER-2/neu-overexpressing cells to TNF-induced apoptosis and inhibits IkappaB kinases, IkappaB phosphorylation, and NF-kappaB activation. Our results suggested that HER-2/neu constitutively activates the Akt/NF-kappaB anti-apoptotic cascade to confer resistance to TNF on cancer cells and reduce host defenses against neoplasia.

Abstract

The p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) play a crucial role in stress and inflammatory responses and are also involved in activation of the human immunodeficiency virus gene expression. We have isolated the murine cDNA clones encoding p38-delta MAPK, and we have localized the p38-delta gene to mouse chromosome 17A3-B and human chromosome 6p21.3. By using Northern and in situ hybridization, we have examined the expression of p38-delta in the mouse adult tissues and embryos. p38-delta was expressed primarily in the lung, testis, kidney, and gut epithelium in the adult tissues. Although p38-delta was expressed predominantly in the developing gut and the septum transversum in the mouse embryo at 9.5 days, its expression began to be expanded to many specific tissues in the 12.5-day embryo. At 15.5 days, p38-delta was expressed virtually in most developing epithelia in embryos, suggesting that p38-delta is a developmentally regulated MAPK. Interestingly, p38-delta and p38-alpha were similar serine/threonine kinases but differed in substrate specificity. Overall, p38-delta resembles p38-gamma, whereas p38-beta resembles p38-alpha. Moreover, p38-delta is activated by environmental stress, extracellular stimulants, and MAPK kinase-3, -4, -6, and -7, suggesting that p38-delta is a unique stress-responsive protein kinase.

Abstract

The adenovirus E1A protein has been implicated in increasing cellular susceptibility to apoptosis induced by tumor necrosis factor (TNF); however, its mechanism of action is still unknown. Since activation of nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) has been shown to play an anti-apoptotic role in TNF-induced apoptosis, we examined apoptotic susceptibility and NF-kappaB activation induced by TNF in the E1A transfectants and their parental cells. Here, we reported that E1A inhibited activation of NF-kappaB and rendered cells more sensitive to TNF-induced apoptosis. We further showed that this inhibition was through suppression of IkappaB kinase (IKK) activity and IkappaB phosphorylation. Moreover, deletion of the p300 and Rb binding domains of E1A abolished its function in blocking IKK activity and IkappaB phosphorylation, suggesting that these domains are essential for the E1A function in down-regulating IKK activity and NF-kappaB signaling. However, the role of E1A in inhibiting IKK activity might be indirect. Nevertheless, our results suggest that inhibition of IKK activity by E1A is an important mechanism for the E1A-mediated sensitization of TNF-induced apoptosis.

50. Protein phosphatase X interacts with c-Rel and stimulates c-Rel/nuclear factor kappaB activity.

Abstract

Nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) and the Rel family of proteins are pleiotropic transcription factors that play central roles in the immune and inflammatory responses, as well as apoptosis. Here, we identified a serine/threonine protein phosphatase X (PPX; also called protein phosphatase 4 (PP4)) that specifically associated with c-Rel, NF-kappaB p50, and RelA. The amino acid sequences of human and mouse PPX are 100% identical, and the PPX gene was mapped to human chromosome 16 p11.2. Overexpression of PPX, but not catalytically inactive PPX mutants, stimulated the DNA-binding activity of c-Rel and activated NF-kappaB-mediated transcription. These results suggest that PPX is a novel activator of c-Rel/NF-kappaB.
