Differences between interactive active video games (AVGs) and non-interactive AVGs on sedentary behavior, light physical activity, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity has never been compared. Therefore, the purpose of this study to compare differences between two AVGs modalities on sedentary behavior, light physical activity, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity implemented within an academic classroom setting in children. Participants were 44 children (20 girls; mean age = 7.68 [plus or minus] 1.49 years) from two elementary schools. Over 3 weeks, children in the non-interactive AVGs group completed three 10-minute classroom-based AVGs sessions daily (Monday-Friday). Children in the interactive video gaming group spent an identical amount of time daily in classroom-based AVGs. Participants' school day sedentary behavior and physical activity were assessed across 3 weeks using accelerometers. Linear mixed effects models were employed to compare differences between AVGs modalities across 3 weeks on sedentary behavior and physical activity controlling for the potential confounding of age and sex. Children participating in the interactive video gaming had a 14.4% greater increase in sedentary behavior, a 2.4% greater increase in light physical activity, and a 7.4% greater decrease in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity from Week 1 to Week 3 relative to non-interactive AVGs (p < 0.001). After adjusting for age and sex, across all time-points, children who participated in interactive gaming had lower sedentary behavior (mean difference = -45.8%, p < 0.001), lower light physical activity (mean difference = -5.1%, p = 0.034), and higher moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (mean difference = 24.7%, p < 0.001) compared to children participating in non-interactive AVGs. Although children participating in the 3-week interactive video gaming had lower sedentary behavior, lower light physical activity, and higher moderate-to-vigorous physical activity compared to non-interactive gaming, the magnitude of the differences were not sustained across the intervention.

Purpose: This study examined interrelationships among insomnia, stress, anxiety, and metabolic risk factors. Methods: A total of 124 college students were included in the analysis (age = 21 ± 1 years). Insomnia, stress of life events, and anxiety were assessed using self-reported questionnaires. Fasting blood samples were assayed for glucose, insulin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol). Results: Insomnia was positively associated with stress of life events ([beta] = 0.28, p < 0.001) and anxiety ([beta] = 0.46, p < 0.001). Insomnia was related to elevated fasting insulin ([beta] = 0.12, p = 0.04) and triglyceride level ([beta] = 1.85, p < 0.001). An inverse association was found between insomnia and HDL-cholesterol ([beta] = -0.45, p = 0.03). Sobel's test for mediation showed that stress of life events (p = 0.020) and anxiety (p = 0.013) mediated the relationship between insomnia and hypertriglyceridemia. Conclusions: Reducing stress and anxiety among college students with insomnia may influence subsequent cardiovascular health.

Mental toughness (MT) is an important predictor of athletic performance with a growing number of studies examining the effects of MT on athletic performance. However, there is a lack of clear understanding regarding the exact effects. Therefore, we aimed to synthesise the extant literature regarding the MT-athletic performance effect by systematic review and meta-analysis. Using related keywords of mental toughness, sport, and performance, we searched ten major academic databases from January 2000 to August 2022. Results found that the 16 studies we examined showed moderate to high publication quality, moderate heterogeneity, low sensitivity, and low publication bias. Furthermore, using a random effect estimate-r, we found a moderate to a high correlation between MT and athletic performance, yielding an overall effect size of r = 0.36. Moreover, we found the MT-athletic performance relationship was moderated by age group (r = 0.20 for adolescents and r = 0.41 for adults); sports category (r = 0.73 for combat sports, r = 0.30 for ball sports, and r = 0.32 for endurance sports); sports type (r = 0.73 for individual sports and r = 0.21 for team sports); athletic performance measure (r = 0.33 for objective measure and r = 0.62 for subjective measure); and measure of MT (r = 0.56 for MTQ group, r = 0.32 for PPI-A group, r = 0.33 for MTI group, and r = 0.13 for others). We thus concluded that MT is a broad and multi-factored concept with diverse components in measures. A history of stressors in athletes represents psychosocial factors that may lead to sport injury. However, empirical studies have provided varying results for the relationship between stress history and sport injury. We examined prior literature on the stress history - sport injury relationship within a systematic review and, by meta-analysis, we offered a pooled estimate of the strength of this relationship. We searched seven major academic databases (Sportdiscus, Psyinfo, Academic Search Premier, Ovid, Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed) from January 2000 to September 2023 and identified 19 empirical studies that examined injuries in sports contexts for meta-analysis. In 19 empirical studies of moderate to high publication quality, we found moderate heterogeneity (Q(17) = 98.61; p <.001), low sensitivity (I2 77.82–83.77), and low publication bias (Z-value = 7.74; p <.001). Further, using a random effect estimate-r, we found a low but significant correlation between stress history and sport injury, yielding a small overall effect size (ES) of r =.12. Furthermore, moderation analyses found adolescents (r =.14), contact-sport athletes (r =.09), non-elite athletes (r =.13), and non-European athletes (America r =.16; Asia r =.14; Oceania r =.14) to have a relatively higher ES than their counterparts in this stress history/sport injury relationship. We concluded that inevitable life stressors may lead to many negative consequences for athletes, such that sports professionals should provide stress management educational programs to enhance athletes' health and well-being. Physical self-concept plays a central role in older adults' physical health, mental health and psychological well-being; however, little attention has been paid to the underlying dimensions of physical self-concept in the elderly. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a new measurement for older adults. First, a qualitative study (Study 1) was conducted that included semistructured interviews and a focus group discussion. The second study established an initial instrument. Through item pool generation, content validation assessment, factor analysis, and item analysis ("n" = 187), the Physical Self-Concept Scale for Older Adults (PSCS-O) was produced containing 18 items and six dimensions. Finally, in the third study ("n" = 233), the PSCS-O showed adequate factorial stability and the initial criterion validity. The PSCS-O were able to explain 49.2% of the variance in older adults' well-being. In addition, Ability to Live Independently, which was introduced as a new factor by the PSCS-O, was the strongest predictor of the older adults' overall subjective well-being. In conclusion, the preliminary results from this study demonstrated that this new instrument, the PSCS-O, has sound psychometric properties. The PSCS-O may be a suitable and useful instrument in the study of physical self-concept in older adults in the future. (Contains 3 tables and 1 figure.)

College student-athletes have unique life stress that warrants close attention. The purpose of this study was to develop a reliable and valid measurement assessing college student-athletes' life stress. In Study 1, a focus group discussion and Delphi method produced a questionnaire draft, termed the College Student-Athletes' Life Stress Scale. In Study 2 and Study 3, the properties of the items and the underlying structure of the College Student-Athletes' Life Stress Scale were confirmed through item analysis, factor analysis, and reliability examination. A 24-item College Student-Athletes' Life Stress Scale with eight factors was established. In addition, examining concurrent and discriminant validity via correlations among College Student-Athletes' Life Stress Scale, positive state of mind, and burnout experiences provided further evidences of criterion validity. Across these phases, results showed adequate factorial structure, criterion validity, and reliability of the College Student-Athletes' Life Stress Scale. The investigators suggest that College Student-Athletes' Life Stress Scale could be used as a tool for researchers and practitioners to assess college student-athletes' life stress.
