A computational vascular fluid–structure interaction framework for the simulation of patient-specific cerebral aneurysm configurations is presented. A new approach for the computation of the blood vessel tissue prestress is also described. Simulations of four patient-specific models are carried out, and quantities of hemodynamic interest such as wall shear stress and wall tension are studied to examine the relevance of fluid–structure interaction modeling when compared to the rigid arterial wall assumption. We demonstrate that flexible wall modeling plays an important role in accurate prediction of patient-specific hemodynamics. Discussion of the clinical relevance of our methods and results is provided.

This paper presents a computational vascular fluid-structure interaction (FSI) methodology and its application to patient-specific aneurysm models of the middle cerebral artery bifurcation. A fully coupled fluid-structural simulation approach is reviewed, and main aspects of mesh generation in support of patient-specific vascular FSI analyses are presented. Quantities of hemodynamic interest such as wall shear stress and wall tension are studied to examine the relevance of FSI modeling as compared to the rigid arterial wall assumption. We demonstrate the importance of including the flexible wall modeling in vascular blood flow simulations by performing a comparison study that involves four patient-specific models of cerebral aneurysms varying in shape and size.

The Fontan procedure is a surgery that is performed on single-ventricle heart patients, and, due to the wide range of anatomies and variations among patients, lends itself nicely to study by advanced numerical methods. We focus on a patient-specific Fontan configuration, and perform a fully coupled fluid–structure interaction (FSI) analysis of hemodynamics and vessel wall motion. To enable physiologically realistic simulations, a simple approach to constructing a variable-thickness blood vessel wall description is proposed. Rest and exercise conditions are simulated and rigid versus flexible vessel wall simulation results are compared. We conclude that flexible wall modeling plays an important role in predicting quantities of hemodynamic interest in the Fontan connection. To the best of our knowledge, this paper presents the first three-dimensional patient-specific fully coupled FSI analysis of a total cavopulmonary connection that also includes large portions of the pulmonary circulation.

An infrared photodetector that contains a superlattice structure and a blocking barrier was investigated. The photodetector shows advantages including a low operating voltage (<0.7 V), wide detection bandwidth, flexible miniband engineering, and in particular, voltage-tunable spectral responsivity. The blocking barrier not only prohibits the dark current but also acts as a high-pass energy filter to tune the spectral responsivity. The zero background peak detectivity of our detector is 3.7×10[sup 9] cm Hz[sup 0.5]/W (9.7 μm) at -0.5 V and 2.2×10[sup 10] cm Hz[sup 0.5]/W (6.7 μm) at -0.1 V. Since the spectral responsivity at different biases is independent, temperature sensing is feasible by taking the ratio of the measured photocurrent at different biases. A demonstration of temperature sensing by using our superlattice infrared photodetector with a blocking barrier is also shown in this article. Those results show the superlattice is a simple and efficient structure for the design of a multicolor infrared photodetector. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
