Abstract

Etalim has developed and lifetime tested a flexure-based thermoacoustic (TAC) genset operating at high pressure and frequency. It is an efficient and practical 1 kWe genset ready for deployment as a genset or a micro-cogeneration system when integrated with a recuperated natural gas burner and stroke controlling power electronics. It is a maintenancefree, extreme reliability genset particularly suited for remote power applications. The genset is fully costed and designed for manufacturing. Fuel-to-electric efficiency of 22% has been achieved, and one remaining avenue for significant improvement identified. A test TAC has been run for a cumulative time of about 8000 hours to date without any component failures.

31. The iBobbly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander app project: Study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

Abstract

Background: Suicide amongst Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities occurs at twice the rate of the general population and, with significant barriers to treatment, help-seeking prior to a suicide attempt is low. This trial aims to test the effectiveness of an app (iBobbly) designed with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for reducing suicidal ideation. Methods/design: This is a two-arm randomised controlled trial that will compare iBobbly to a wait-list control condition. The trial aims to recruit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants aged 16 years and over to test iBobbly, which is a self-help app delivering content based on acceptance and commitment therapy. The primary outcome for the study is suicidal ideation, and secondary outcomes include depression, hopelessness, distress tolerance, perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belonging, and help-seeking intentions. Data will be collected for both groups at baseline, post-intervention (after 6 weeks of app use), and at 6 months post-baseline (with a final 12-month follow-up for the iBobbly group). Primary analysis will compare changes in suicidal ideation for the intervention condition relative to the wait-list control condition using mixed models. An examination of the cost-effectiveness of the intervention compared to the control condition will be conducted. Discussion: If effective, iBobbly could overcome many barriers to help-seeking amongst a group of people who are at increased risk of suicide. It may provide a low-cost, accessible intervention that can reach more people. This trial will add to a sparse literature on indigenous suicide prevention and will increase our knowledge about the effectiveness of e-health interventions for suicide prevention.

Abstract

In this paper, we study the actor-action semantic segmentation problem, which requires joint labeling of both actor and action categories in video frames. One major challenge for this task is that when an actor performs an action, different body parts of the actor provide different types of cues for the action category and may receive inconsistent action labeling when they are labeled independently. To address this issue, we propose an end-to-end region-based actor-action segmentation approach which relies on region masks from an instance segmentation algorithm. Our main novelty is to avoid labeling pixels in a region mask independently - instead we assign a single action label to these pixels to achieve consistent action labeling. When a pixel belongs to multiple region masks, max pooling is applied to resolve labeling conflicts. Our approach uses a two-stream network as the front-end (which learns features capturing both appearance and motion information), and uses two region-based segmentation networks as the back-end (which takes the fused features from the two-stream network as the input and predicts actor-action labeling). Experiments on the A2D dataset demonstrate that both the region-based segmentation strategy and the fused features from the two-stream network contribute to the performance improvements. The proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art results by more than 8% in mean class accuracy, and more than 5% in mean class IOU, which validates its effectiveness., Comment: Accepted by BMVC 2018

Abstract

Weight loss in obese subjects ingesting very-low-energy (VLE; < 25 10kJ/d), low-fat ([less than or equal to] g/d) formula diets is associated with liver-function-test abnormalities and gallstone formation. It is unknown whether these abnormalities develop during treatment with diets higher in energy and fat. We prospectively studied liver-function tests and galistone formation in 73 obese patients ingesting [nearly equal to]3500 kJ and 15-25 g fat daily for 10 wk. Two of 53 patients completing the protocol developed ultrasonographic galistones during weight loss, a rate substantially lower than that observed with VLE diets. Trend analysis demonstrated significant increases in AST and ALT activities, ut changes were less than those observed with VLE diets. Patients who developed galistones had a significantly greater weight loss rate and larger increases in AST and ALT than did nonstone-forming patients. These results suggest that the risk of developing hepatobiliary abnormalities with dieting is lowered when subjects ingest greater amounts of energy and fat than that administered in earlier VLE-diet studies.
